I might be done building my computer. I know, I know, it was up and running like 2 weeks ago but tonight I finally finished installing the last planned thing. My speakers are mounted on a shelf above the monitor which is much harder than it sounds. (mounting a vesa mount through a heavy shelf turned out to be much more complex than expected. Mounting speakers designed to sit on a shelf to a shelf that sits at a 45 degree angle = PRETTY EFFING TRICKY. I did it. It's a wee bit janky but I did it. Because the jankiness is clear, it's not actually visually awkward.)

I put in an AIO water cooler for the processor and magically it cleared enough space for airflow that the GPU, which is air cooled, is also much cooler. The front fans are all black now.

The cables are managed.

The fans are set to a mixed curve that means they respond to the hottest components rather than just one component. (AIO radiator set to the higher of the cpu or gpu, exhaust, all other fans set to the hottest of the PCH, GPU or memory.) Fan Control for the win. Turning off zero RPM but setting the early curve low for the GPU makes for a very quiet system and much cooler than when zero RPM was on. Most of the fans are 140mm so they don't have to spin fast to move a bunch of air. The AIO was super easy to do and at about $60, really cheap for a 280mm radiator. The webcam is no longer looming over me precariously, now it looms over me very securely mounted on a tripod mount affixed to the shelf behind the monitor. The monitor no longer gives me headaches. I had to do some really odd stuff to make that happen, and I'm not sure I could duplicate it as I did it when I had a really bad headache. (I had to turn down the refresh rate from 165 max to 120hz, which it hits consistently in most games, and I had turn ON HDR and then calibrate it and then not use it for most things. I think. IDK. I've been using 60hz monitors for decades so I think my brain was getting tired at 165hz. I'm bad at filtering things.)

So I'm going to my first comic con in almoat two weeks but I'm nervous?? Cuz Idk what to expect?? Can you share some of your experiences?? ILY 💞

Mmmm it’s kind of hard to say because I’ve only ever been to New York comic con and not any of the other locations, but I’ll try to help you out as best I can!

I have no idea if you’ve been to prior cons before (anime, ect), but if you have, then the same basic principles of con etiquette apply. This is just a bigger and more crowded con than what you’re probably used to. Some specifically NYCC and general comic con things that stuck out to me:

There’s not much going on Thursday, so it’s honestly the best day to just explore and go shopping. Dealers room is huge, and there’s also artist alley. There’s really not any panels or stuff going on the first day, so it’s a good time to get all your sightseeing and shopping out of the way. 

Don’t be afraid to approach booths for stuff you’re unfamiliar with if it looks Really Cool–there was this one video game stand at NYCC last year with a giant dragon you could sit on. Had no clue what the fuck it was for, but you better believe I was lining up to sit on a life size dragon, lmao.

Comic con also always has lots of exclusives sold for just the con! For instance, when VLD panels are at cons, the Lionforge booth usually sells variant cover exclusives of the new comics and such. You can look through the comic con website for your specific location and see what exclusives will be offered. 

Get to the entryway early!! My friend and I were in line probably an hour before NYCC opened, and we made pretty good time. Also, we got this neat bag–that they eventually ran out of, lmao. Even while waiting on the line to get in, comic con offers some fun exclusives and you miss that stuff if you’re there too late. And of course, it’s just always a good idea to be there early. At least then you get a chance to explore the venue and sort out where you need to be later on, buy an exclusive that might sell out quickly, ect. 

Also, you should definitely go over that schedule beforehand and see what panels and things you’re interested in–try to workout at least a basic outline for how you want to do things. Plan to line up for panels wayyyy in advance…even at small cons you could wait an hour on line. At NYCC, you might well end up waiting upwards of two hours for your panel or signing. Sometimes there are also caps put on the lines, so just like…be Prepared

If you can kind of scope out the venue ahead of time and see where a good place to eat would be, take note! Also, always good to have a general idea of where bathrooms are. You don’t want to have to be running around looking for things last minute.

If you’re kind of uneasy in crowds (I got some of that Social Anxiety myself), make sure you’re just,, generally prepared for big crowds. Because, trust me, there will be lots and lots of people. Anticipate having a hard time finding places to sit and eat inside. 

Don’t forget to bring your ID just in case they check it with your badge. They didn’t ask me for mine last year (though, Thursday is like a slow day). But just in case, make sure you have an ID on hand.  

I find smaller cons are generally better if you’re hoping with more…interaction with fans, I guess? Like, it seems at NYCC, everyone is on the move and has someplace to be. At smaller cons, you’ll generally have people come up and talk to you more. Still, if you’re wearing a cosplay, you’ll definitely get some people that’ll come over and say hi :D 

General con etiquette and knowledge stuff if you’re just really new to cons in general:

FOOD AND WATER IS NOT OPTIONAL!! Something magical happens at cons where you suddenly forget to eat, drink or sleep and if you and your friends haven’t stopped for a break in a while, pull them aside and just hydrate real quick. Pack water bottles and snacks!! You probably have that one Responsible friend in the group who insists on bringing food and water and stopping for breaks–and they are never wrong. Listen to your friend. They know what’s up.

Be Responsible,,–yes, you should bring enough money to cover food and all the nerd stuff you’re gonna splurge on. But try to set a realistic threshold of how much you want to spend so you don’t go overboard. 

Just so you know, lots of cosplayers (myself included!) love when people give them compliments or take pictures!! :D It’s super fun! HoweveR,, please be aware that there’s certain expected con etiquette. Do not just take a picture without asking, it’s incredibly rude and kind of unsettling. Also, feels like a breach in privacy. If you want to take a picture, simply go up to them and ask for permission first. Most of the time they’ll be happy to! 

If the cosplayer is already surrounded by like five or ten people taking pictures, there’s also the general unspoken rule that you can just join in and take one too, as it’s clear they’ve already given their permission. Just make sure they’re okay with being photographed first, that’s the main thing. 

Also, do not ask if they’re in the middle of eating or going on a bathroom break. These are pretty general con etiquette rules that basically everyone knows. But then you get people like the guy who asked my friend for a photo while they were midway through biting into their sandwich. Do not be that guy,, let cosplayers have breaks too.

Also, if you’re taking a picture with another cosplayer, ask before posing with them! For example, if you can put your hand on their shoulder, hug them, ect. I’m really small so it’s easy to lift me–consequently, I’ve had people pick me up and cradle me and even kiss me at cons without asking,, :/ It can be pretty upsetting if people just do that without consent. Oftentimes, if I can prepare myself for it first, I’m okay with lifts and hugs, ect, but don’t ever just spring that shit on someone–if you wouldn’t do it to a stranger, don’t assume it’s okay to do it to a cosplayer.

Also, remember cosplayers are people too! They have their own thoughts and feelings. That sounds silly, but like…I’ve cosplayed Keith while my friend was Lance and I can’t tell you how obnoxious it was for girls to just run up to me and scream “kLA/NCE!!” like…please don’t make cosplayers feel awkward or get in their face. Also, please understand if they don’t want to do a ship photo with another cosplayer. Whatever you say to them “in character,” please remember there’s an actual real person in that costume. 

If you’re a cosplayer, congratulations!! I hope you have lots of fun!! But also, just know if you’re a little shy or anxious that people are going to want to come over and say hi. Again, you can tell people not to take pictures if you aren’t comfortable, and never feel pressured to pose or do something just because you’re in cosplay! Also, if you’ve got a costume you made yourself–little sewing kits are a life saver, as are hairsprays and things to maintain wigs. Dress for the weather! You might look cool, but not if you’re dying from the heat. If you’re costume’s getting cumbersome or exhausting to wear, make sure you have something comfy to change into just in case. 

Try to wear comfy shoes!! You’ll start to really feel it after walking around for several hours ;;

I don’t know if it’s the weather or packed crowds or running around on limited resources, but someone in the friend group always has a headache at some point. Try to pack some Advil or something if you can! Same goes for any other “just in case” items–even if you think you won’t need it, so long as there’s a chance, bring it! Also, a quick addition to your emergency pack--a portable phone charger. There were some charging stations at NYCC, but they’re always very crowded. 

BudDY SYSTEM!! Go to cons with a group of friends and try to make sure one of you is always with a buddy. It’s generally a bad idea to split up in my experience.

Final Fantasy XV Points: 3.75/5 Status: no walkthrough used played through in approximately 40 hours

I actually played through the game decades ago, but never came down to review it, because I wasn't sure what to think of it. I enjoyed it – a lot, but it also gave me headaches, because of how bad it was delivered. Or let's say, you had a million expectations after waiting years and they just didn't end up being fulfilled. I never played the DLCs, but I tried everything else to get into the franchise and this also leads me to say this, all this extra content should have just been part of the game. The Royal Edition does most of that right by simply giving you access to those episodes. Which means I'll probably buy it and after watching countless reviews and videos, I really want to re-live this experience, because I enjoyed it despite all the faults.

Artwork/Design

Square Enix knows how world building works, knows how to create a mass of a big beautiful vibrant colourful world. In XV we have a lovely world and endearing main characters. This world is fun to explore (in the first half of the game) while you literally just want more in the second half of the game, which is the linear kind of FF nobody wanted really. Traditional sci-fi elements meet modern world technology, XV indeed reminded me a little of the picture I have of America, of these vast spaces with just a road in the middle. Needless to say you have this pretty car, the Regalia, to take you along the roads and honestly, if you don't care much about waiting, this gives you the great opportunity of simply looking at the world. XV has many overly beautiful landscapes that are worth being explored.

Even the dungeons feature some of this magic, although they seem a bit underwhelming after you've explored the rest of the “open world”. The towns are super grand and spectacular, it's indeed a bit disappointing that you couldn't explore them more. I honestly just wanted more than this vast space of landscape, that was worth exploring, but I feel like all that they put into this space just went lost elsewhere.

Anyhow, XV has a good display of monuments, reaching from Venice like towns, to towers, mountains, woods etc. XV shows that you can commit yourself to grand and wonderful words, in a different way than XCII for example. They're both beautiful, but completely different. XV created a world that feels completely realistic, because of a huge diversity. (XCII is much more fantastical in this aspect).

Story/Combat System

Not sure what to say in this regard, other than this is where XV lacks real substance?? What you want from a game is a beautiful world, an engaging story and likeable strong characters, but XV literally put 80% of that into additional DLCs, that indeed cost more money than the complete game. But after watching videos I am convinced, that you can enjoy the story, along with character development, if you dive into the big world of XV, with all it can offer (DLCs, Movie, short anime series).

If the game stands alone, it's hard to grasp the motivations and emotional states of the characters. I think our main character suffers the most from this transfer of content. The game literally doesn't tell you much about him and none of his friends can totally get a grip on him, although the game tries to actually connect these characters through the story, but while you actually get to explore the world big time in the first half, the string of the main story goes completely lost, while second half does the complete opposite.

Nonetheless it's an interesting road trip between lovely characters, that get all the more better once you start their DLCs. All 4 characters take on different jobs and functions in your trip and the trip actually moves them much closer to one another. XV does the complete opposite of X, it strays far away from the romantic underlying plot which never comes to fruition, which is kind of regrettable, cause Lunafreya was an interesting female character that just gets dumped in the middle of the story. You hardly get the time to even remember her name. XV instead focuses on the kinship of these 4 dudes and it's endearing in every aspect, although the English voice acting is... a tad too much sometimes.

If I had to summarise the plot; a prince sets out to save the world with his 3 best friends / servants. This overall isn't the most original plot, but to find out about the true antagonist is worth the trip. I always boast about doing side quests and hey, there's a lot in XV, but they're even worse than in XC II. In a way they both have the same goal, to have you explore more, but XCII gives these side quests shape, if a NPC gives you a quest, it serves a purpose. XV lacks such a purpose, instead the quests feel kind of stupid. Search for wax all over the place for what exactly? Idk. Still XV has more to show: fishing (I gave this up at some point), bounty hunting, finding treasures and raid tombs, search for ingredients to cook, chocobo races, bet on monster fights...

What XV lacks overall is a good balance between exploration and story telling. And a good writing, because the DLCs deliver more impactful stories than the main game. Despite this I actually cried when I finished XV, because despite everything I indulged in this world and these 4 characters (that I made up way too many headcannons). The end is very emotional, although rushed.

Combat is completely action based, fully real time combat which gets a tad repetitive over time, but that overall didn't bother me much. I had my fair share of fun linking attacks and teleporting all over the place with Noctis' special ability. The system is new to FF entries and exciting at first glance, but lacks good magic use and the summons – while brilliant to look at – can hardly be depended upon, when you don't even know if they'll ever appear despite how much rape the goddamn button.

The combat is fast paced and while you can deliver good blows, the same can be said about your opponents. I think the balance is pretty well, as it isn't too hard, but not too easy either. The bosses are always the toughest enemies.

Fighting with your companions is fun, linking attacks is great and while your 3 companions can bring about damage and choose smartly between magic and normal attacks, they can also be completely useless sometimes... I do like the idea of fighting though, because fighting in XV means bonding time! Overall the system is overshadowed by its limit. I wish there were more tactical aspects to the fighting.

While this overall doesn't sound exactly positive, I enjoyed my FF XV trip. If you play the main game and the DLCs, watch the movie and youtube anime series, I am pretty sure you'll enjoy the XV universe. It's just that all of this would have done the main game a pretty big favour, if everything had been included in it.

some Voltron thoughts

Warning for major season 4 spoilers, of course. Hopefully this isn’t too all-over-the-place but for the past few days I’ve been thinking and chatting about voltron a lot and have lots of thoughts in my head. 

 So, my friends and I have been talking. We think that, with Lotor seeking an alliance with the paladins, we’ll finally get some answers about Shiro and wether he’s a clone. Mainly because we agree that Lotor knows- and most likely headed- project Kuron. Obviously, Lotor operates only for his own interests, and so whatever purpose he has for teaming up with the Paladins will benefit him and likely be part of his end game. We already know that being declared an enemy of the Galra was part of his plan, so it’s likely this may have been intentional so that he could go, “oh, I have nothing to lose, so you’re in a position of power and should agree to an alliance with me” to the paladins. We also think that there are two options regarding clone Shiro: we think it’s possible he’s taken from another dimension, first off. Lotor has access to the ore that would allow him to travel between parallel universes, and we don’t know his purpose for collecting the special Quintessence from in between the dimensions. In theory, his purpose to gathering this Quintessence and crossing dimensions (the tech for which he’s had for a while, according to him) could be for multiple reasons, one of which being getting an alternate Shiro to replace ours and then giving fake memories/ brainwashing him to make him convincing.

 Another theory is that they just grew him and put our Shiro’s memories in the fake. They definitely have the tech for implanting fake memories, and I honestly believe something bigger is going on when it comes to that. Here’s why. In season 1, when the team is asking Shiro about his arm and escape from the Galra, Hunk talks about them implanting fake memories, and he talks about how they’d have to have a way to store data on a molecular level (Hunk says “molecular level storage unit”.) Shiro’s arm does have this teach. And then he goes on to say that to implant fake memories they’d need a direct pathway to his brain, which again, we know they’re capable of this because his arm is connected to the rest of his nervous system. (interesting- so they’d need a direct pathway to his brain to implant memories. and what does fake Shiro describe himself as having? a ‘weird headache’. I don’t think they should have brushed that off. Though it may have revealed the voltron writers’ game too early...) We never got an explanation for why the Galra removed Shiro’s arm and gave him a magical, high-tech weaponized prosthetic, and while I’m thinking that yes, probably some of that was just to give Shiro a weapon, the fact that those were the kinds of experiments Hagar and her witches were running leads me to believe that even then, they were working to develop and planning to test this cloning tech. 

 So we know the Galra have the technology to implant fake memories in a clone of Shiro. All this tech is already present in his arm. If you look at the flashback scenes, they say “operation Kuron stage one successful. Begin stage two,” and we see them handling what looks to be a Galra syringe with a blue/clear substance. I’m thinking it’s that molecular level storage unit Hunk was mentioning that is storing our Shiro’s memories. (Additionally, when we get those operation Kuron flashbacks, the clone is wearing the same exact clothing that Shiro’s wearing when he’s found in episode one. That’s highly suspicious to me. “Shiro has actually been a clone all along” is not a theory im ready to start supporting, like at all, but that’s just... hm. Maybe it’s just the Galra prisoner clothing. Idk. But I realized that and was shook.) 

 But there’s more, because there’s one more time we’ve heard about ‘molecular level storage units’. Pidge, in episode two, corrects her teacher saying that it’s the most cutting-edge tech. so that’s..... interesting. I feel like it’s connected, somehow, and we don’t know what happened to Matt and pidge’s dad. I saw a theory based on some of the above (that is now hopelessly lost in my dash, sorry ;-;) that maybe he’s working with the Galra in some scientific capacity, but I think that’s unlikely, because right before their capture he talks about his life’s work being to discover extra-terrestrial life, not anything to do with this tech. But the fact that it’s mentioned so often, and is technology which we know the Galra have and would be involved in implanting fake memories, is suspicious to me.

 I feel like there’s something bigger going on regarding it and his arm, probably even beyond just being the tech they’d had to implant fake memories into a clone Shiro, though I’m not exactly sure what.
