Tobias: A Retrospective

A lot of the people who like the pokemon anime hate on Tobias. For those of you who seethe at the name, I know how you feel. For those of you that don’t know, he’s the guy who handed Ash Ketchum yet another league defeat, in this case at Sinnoh.

By using a Darkrai to steamroll the League, then a Latios.

So here’s the thing. Legendary pokemon are naturally strong, and these two were then trained by some random asshat to be even stronger. And Ash went through his entire team to defeat both those Trained Legendaries. He lost, but he defeated them both.

Like. Okay. Here’s the thing. People hate on Ash because “durr hurr he’s a shit trainer and is terrible how could anyone like the forever-a-ten-year-old” and yet, like... how many people judge the book by its cover, and ignore the deeper metaphors?

The Pokemon Anime was designed as a method to deliver two messages. The first is obvious product placement, because they want you to hop on the bandwagon hypetrain sorta thing and buy the merch. But the second is literally “It’s not the destination that matters, but the journey.” Sure, he ‘wants to be the very best, like no one ever was,’ but that doesn’t necessarily mean winning.

Top 16 in his first league conference, Top 8 in the second and third. Then Top 4, where Tobias punched his shit in. Top 8 again. Runner-Up in Lumiose. He beat the Orange League, and is a recognized Frontier Brain and Baron of the Battle Chateau, nevermind all of the various Pokemon Competitions he entered and even won. Not to mention the movies and all the times the nerd saved the world. Bottom line, Ash is very good for a ten year old, or even a sixteen year old.

But Tobias... Tobias is an analogy. To serve as a contrast to Ash, who doesn’t just raise pokemon but also bonds with them. The closest we, as gamers, get to this state of minds is through a nuzlocke: forming attachments, feeling loss when they ‘die’ or are otherwise removed from play.

Tobias is a casual Pokemon trainer who was given a Darkrai at a level low enough that his badge progression would keep it under control. As in, pro hack-tion replay. If it wasn’t for the fact the Darkrai was used to steamroll through all the gyms, he’d be the casual pokemon gamer who knows ‘it’s a perfectly legal meme to use Legendaries against the League, assuring a win because they’re op, so why not?’

Paul is the competitive pokemon gamer. “Yes, hello, I’m going to catch several pokemon and check their EVs, and release the weakest ones. If, after training, they have low IV yield, in the trash they go. If they’re strong, they better do their job like they’re supposed to or my cold, salty edge will get warm and salty and that means they go, while I look for something less disgusting.”
