Wip Ask Game

RULES: post the names of all the files in your WIP folder, regardless of how non-descriptive or ridiculous. Let people send you an ask with the title that most intrigues them, and then post a little snippet or tell them something about it!

TV Series

01 Russian Doll - I think I would have enjoyed this more if it hadn’t been bingeable - would have made a nice week-by-week discussion sort of show. I loved to watch the changes between re-ups of our major characters, and I think the actual plotting would reward re-watches. 

02 Catastrophe S4 - A satisfying ending to an excellent show, with very charismatic leads (and deeply weird supporting characters). Had to write around Carrie Fisher’s death, and I’m sure did a better job of it than Star Wars did. 

03 Friends from College S2 - More of the same, which is what I was after. A show like cotton candy (but with more infidelity). 

04 High Maintenance S3 - A lot more of this season took place outside of New York City, which was a great change of pace. And a great deal more information about The Guy and his own life; both difficulties and successes included. 

05 Losers - This was a great little docuseries on Netflix that I didn’t hear a lot of people talking about - it’s about sports losses, but unusual sports ie curling, figure skating and the like. You’d think it would get repetitive, being as it’s always about recovering after loss, but it doesn’t! I wish they would make another season….

06 Shrill - a tight six episode dramedy about an alt-weekly journalist in the Pacific Northwest, based on Lindy West’s memoir of the same name. John Cameron Mitchell as her boss (based on Dan Savage) stands out of the ensemble cast, as does Annie’s roommate played by a British standup Lolly Adefope.

07 Broad City S5 - I haven’t always kept up with Broad City, but I came back to it for its final season, and thought it did a good job of setting its characters up for big changes in their lives. 

08 I Think You Should Leave - It’s easy to assume that all sketch comedy is terrible and always will be, but then you see this, and throw your TV out the window (due to all the laffs)

09 Fleabag S2 - Everything you’ve heard is true, this season is goddamn hilarious and ridiculously sexy. A huge step up from the first season, which was already pretty fantastic and incisive. 

10 Fosse/Verdon - Musicals are not particularly my bag, so I’m sure there was a lot that I missed in terms of references, but the lead performances ably carried me through all of the time jumps and various performances. 

11 Stranger Things S3 - Say it after me: d-i-m-i-n-i-s-h-i-n-g r-e-t-u-r-n-s! Maya Hawke kills it, though. 

12 Big Little Lies S2 - Unnecessary, and (if possible) even sillier than the first season.

13 Lorena - Part of the ongoing quest to rehabilitate the maligned women of the 1990s, this gave me tons of context that I had no idea about at the time, due to being a dumb kid. 

14 Glow S3 - I felt like I was losing steam on this series this year, but episodes like the camping ep kept me coming back. A great ensemble, though some unusual character choices (like a certain kiss *cough*) took me out of it by times. 

15 Lodge 49 S1-3 - I’d kept hearing about this show, so I finally sought it out. I can’t say it was amazingly compelling (I almost dropped it after the first season) but it’s definitely an oddball of a show, slipping from setpiece to setpiece with little regard for logic. For me, a background show. 

16 Chernobyl - This show really gave me the Bad Feeling, humans were definitely A Mistake.

17 On Becoming a God in Central Florida - Kiki in a trashy mode, not as infinitely appealing as the version she pulled off in the second season of Fargo, but scrappy and industrious nonetheless.

18 Show Me a Hero - I’d put off watching this for years, it felt like it was going to be too dull (housing policy in Yonkers?) but it’s great, and larded up with Bruce Springsteen songs, obvs.

19 Great British Bake Off S9-S10 - I’d also held off on watching this for a long time, out of loyalty to Mel, Sue, and Mary Berry. But I needed some comfort viewing towards the end of the summer, and the new hosts and judge do an able job, although the show’s tropes are feeling a bit well-worn at this point. 

20 Righteous Gemstones S1 - A rollicking ride for sure, with a great cast. Your mileage/patience with Danny McBride may vary, so keep that in mind, naturally. 

21 This Way Up S1 - A small show starring the fabulous Aisling Bea, about mental health and families and some nice comic physical acting. Oh, and in case you were watching The Crown and crushing on Tobias Menzies’ version of Prince Phillip, he plays a hot dad love interest in this, which gives you all the Tobias you’re looking for, without the PP racisms. 

22 The Crown S3 - This is the first season of the big cast switchover, and I thought it stuck reasonably well, once we were in it an episode or two. This season concentrated even less on Elizabeth herself, preferring her sister, husband, and (newly!) her children.

I don't know if it's a stupid question but why do you think Aegon was so sure he was the father of Daemon? I heard he was supposed to be in Braavos when Daena was pregnant and she hide the parentage but did he just claimed Daemon because he disliked Daeron and didn't want Baelor as king? Is that why he started rumors about Daeron but not Daenerys?

That’s not a stupid question at all, allyria! In fact, it’s one I’ve thought a lot about and it’s led to some tinfoil. 

Was Aegon in Braavos when Daena was pregnant? According to the SSM on Daena written in 2006, Daena escaped once in disguise “with the contrivance of her cousin Aegon,” although of course this information is from a long time ago; perhaps GRRM hadn’t come up with the ‘Aegon goes to Braavos on a diplomatic mission for a few years to keep from raping Naerys to death in childbirth’ reason for Daeron II-Daenerys’ 19 year age gap. In the 2014 World of Ice and Fire, it’s revealed that Aegon went to Braavos in 161AC and started an affair with the sea captain Bellegere Otherys that went on for 10 years, during which time she gave birth to three children. If the affair happened in Braavos and only in Braavos, then of course Aegon could not have fathered Daemon, but due to Bellegere’s itinerant occupation there’s no reason to assume they didn’t resume the affair in King’s Landing; in fact, that must be the case, since in 171AC Aegon VI openly took Barba Bracken as his mistress, meaning he was in KL at the time he and Bellegere broke up. So it’s possible that the SSM of Aegon helping Daena escape is still canon, thus Aegon came back to King’s Landing (maybe in the late 160s) from Braavos and perhaps had an affair with her. Considering there were rumors about Aegon being Daemon’s father before he was even acknowledged, I suppose the timeline must’ve worked out for some members of his court.

Now here’s where the tinfoil comes in:

Why do you think Aegon was so sure he was Daemon’s father? I don’t think he was, and only acknowledged Daemon as a last resort. I mentioned in a previous meta that acknowledging Daemon meant acknowledging seducing a princess without intent to marry her (which would’ve brought the wrath of the court and her powerful family, as seen with Saera/the Stinger in F&B), and Aegon wanted to avoid a scandal that could trigger his removal from the Throne. He would not have acknowledged Daemon had his own non-Daeron sons proved so disappointing. 

Aegon IV is unique in Targaryen history for having mistresses as opposed to paramours. (Aegon II and Aerys II had illegitimate children with unnamed [nice one, GRRM -_-] and presumably not-noble paramours, but they did not take them openly as mistresses.) He is also an aberration in real life history, since most kings did not choose unwed teenaged (by which I mean: a 16, a 13, a 15, and a 14 year old), relatively highborn girls to be their mistress; it was considered sacrilegious to defile a virgin, especially a lady, so most kings chose married women with husbands who’d look the other way. Doing so also saved kings from having to care for illegitimate children, since their offspring by married women were legally her husband’s unless acknowledged by the king in writing. It would seem logical for Aegon IV to keep to the lowborn/unimportant in Westeros paramours he had before his ascension (ie, women like Megette and Bellegere), or shift to married women, but he chose 4 Westerosi ladies and an impoverished Essosi aristocrat. Now it could be he was just reveling in being king and bedding highborn girls without consequence, or it could be that he wanted illegitimate sons whose mothers’ were ladies, and giving these unwed girls the ‘mistress’ title essentially ensured that those sons were without a doubt his, (since they had no legal father to cast doubt on his paternity). I suppose Aegon IV took high-but-not-too-high-born mistresses to have sons (who would at least have their family’s support) who could oppose Daeron later on, while not creating too big of a scandal.

It’s bad luck for this supposed plan of Aegon’s that both of his acknowledged, without-a-doubt-his sons turned out to be unsuitable. According to the MUSH RPG Melissa Blackwood was the daughter of a war hero (Bloody Ben) and a Baratheon (the Storm Ellyn) and the granddaughter of a Lannister, and was a beloved mistress besides, but her only son was born with albinism and thus thought cursed; this likely caused Aegon to “lose interest” in her shortly after Brynden’s birth. Aegor also had high birth, but there was no way Aegon was going to show favor to the grandson and nephew of the people he executed out of spite. Instead, he sought suitable sons in Jeyne Lothston and later Serenei of Lys, but then Jeyne got the pox and Serenei died in childbirth with a daughte, so I guess the barely-mobile Aegon figured he’d never have anymore kids by that point, and had to make do with what he had (note: twoiaf is not at all clear when Serenei died and Shiera was born, but I’m putting it around 179-181 because I don’t want Aegor and Brynden potentially “”falling in love”” with an 11-14 year old). So between the son with albinism, the son with traitorous blood, or the son who might not be his son but was the son of a princess who didn’t remarry (so no legal father/husband to dispute the paternity) who was brought up in the Red Keep and was an accomplished fighter at age 12, he was going to bite the bullet and call Daemon his, giving him Blackfyre as a token of favor. Helping his cause was that Daena had probably died before the acknowledgment (again there is no record of when Daena died, although the SSM indicates she lived long enough to raise Daemon, although according to Bran Stark eight/nine is “nearly a man grown” so who knows when childrearing is apparently done), and thus was not around to continue to refuse to name her child’s father.

Is [Aegon IV’s hatred of Daeron] why he started rumors about [his dubious paternity] and not Daenerys’? While I believe Aemon was Daeron’s father after all due to circumstantial evidence (parallel what Viserys I did to Aegon’s lover Falena Stokeworth with what he could’ve done to Naerys’ lover Aemon; send them both away from his child in a position befitting their birth), I do think that Aegon’s dislike of his son (or rather, what he believed Naerys, Viserys, and possibly Aemon and Baelor “turned him into” while he was separated from his child in Braavos) first made him consider that Daeron wasn’t his. However, I also think that the circumstances around Daenerys’ conception must’ve proved without a doubt that she was Aegon’s. Remember that she was born very soon after Aegon became king. Perhaps Aemon could’ve been sent on a scouting expedition to the Dornish marches in preparation for erecting those siege engines, meaning he was separate from Naerys for a time. Another theory with canon precedent is that the High Septon ordered a public re-consummation of Aegon and Naerys’ marriage some time around Aegon’s ascension, similar to Maegor I and Ceryse Hightower’s second consummation; it’s a prince exiled to Essos for a few years who ignored his legitimate wife in favor of younger, “more fertile” women, leading to their estrangement, then coming back together upon his return and their ascension as rulers. If Daenerys was born nine moons after a public consummation while Aemon was away from King’s Landing, then that would explain why there were no rumors about her paternity. Of course, a female child would not have, under the recent court logic that disinherited Queen Daena and her sisters, been able to challenge Daeron in the way a son could’ve, so the rumor mill simply may not have thought she was worth gossiping over.

Glasgow’s Green and S***e - As Celtic’s season continues to spiral, where do they go from here?

The last time I wrote something on this site was 9 November. Neil Lennon was on the brink. Shane Duffy wasn’t very good. Celtic were paying the price for short term loyalties overwhelming long term strategy.

As I start on this, it’s 16 January and all of those things still apply except a bit worse. In fact, the only difference now is that, amongst much of the Celtic support, anger is turning to apathy.

The reason I revisit it now isn’t because I’ve something worthy to say, it’s because someone actually took the time to email me and ask me to write my take with an outlook onto the medium term. So, here is that take and I hope it’s an interesting one because, more than anything, Celtic’s issues at the moment are in basically every department of the club from the boardroom to the bootroom.

They’re hardly unique in that. But what is unusual is that Celtic have cracked under pressure this time. Even when Ronny Deila was publicly having it out with Kris Commons on a bench in Norway, Celtic still appeared a generally well run club that had their head screwed on. Few would credit the club with that now. The recent communications farce around the Dubai trip is perhaps the greatest example of this - Celtic just plain wouldn’t have had it be such a big deal prior to this season.

What are the individual issues that have beset the club this term?

The first is, of course, recruitment. Up until the first season of Brendan Rodgers, the club maintained a reasonably successful buy low, sell high policy. That’s how the club came about Virgil van Dijk, Stuart Armstrong, Ryan Christie, Fraser Forster, Kristoffer Ajer and many more.

Was it always successful? No. Was the cost of those that didn’t work out lower than the profit on those that did? Definitely. And, to be entirely fair, when Celtic deviated from that policy for certain players, they rarely worked out (Carlton Cole, Tyler Blackett, Derk Boerrigter).

When Brendan Rodgers came in, that policy went because you don’t attract a manager like Rodgers to the club on the pretence of “hey, you’ll get some players to improve that we got on the cheap”. In two years of Ronny Deila, Celtic spent more than £2m on players twice (Scepovic and Simunovic). In the same time of Rodgers, that was four times (Edouard loan being confirmed, Eboue Kouassi, Ntcham, Sinclair) with expensive older players brought in too. In one summer, Celtic essentially changed what the club was about. Rangers did so a year later in bringing in Mark Allen.

This isn’t a criticism of what Celtic did in bringing in Rodgers and reacting with recruitment to match - merely to note that it was a definite change in tack and, what time has shown, is that it wasn’t the right call. The prospects brought in were for more money and from different markets and there didn’t appear to be that much though behind it all - Celtic paid the best part of £2m for Marian Shved, a player whose stats just plain old were unsustainable and whose personality (as shown with issues in Belgium this season) doesn’t appear to have been a fit for the club.

Let’s pause that for a second to talk about how I scout. On my desktop, there’s a spreadsheet. That spreadsheet covers football in the former Yugoslavia and Albania and on there I have about 10-15 players per position that I’m keeping an eye on. They’ve been looked at a lot by me, they’re there on merit, there has been a check on stats to make sure everything underlying backs it up and there’s been a check on social media and news to make sure that there’s nothing there that suggests that the player is a liability. And all of that is alongside contract data, potential values and basically what sort of budgetary information is required. In short, if someone comes and asks me what I think of a player on there, I can provide data, whether I think they’ll be a good fit and, crucially, whether or not they’re actually a realistic target or not. From a club perspective, the reality is that every club should be working three windows out.

The point is this - if I asked Celtic who they’re tracking for Summer 2022, they should know. I know who I’m tracking for it and I’m doing it in my spare time. Other clubs will know too. If you’re a Celtic fan reading, I’d ask if you honestly think that Shane Duffy was tracked for that length of time and if that sort of due diligence outlined above was done on him.

Short term recruitment can work - it is, inevitably, hard work to identify targets and rush them through a vetting process quickly, but it can work. For Rangers, without a doubt it was of help to keep the recruitment process pre-Gerrard in place because the data and groundwork was there. You look at the fees paid in Steven Gerrard’s first window and, save for two players who had fitness issues in Grezda and Murphy, they were all successes. If you asked Rangers who their back-ups were if those players hadn’t come in, you’d note they were all successes also.

Take my word for it, they were.

Celtic’s recruitment policy has changed and the personnel have been more fluid. Does that mean Celtic need a sporting director to provide continuity?

Yes. I’d argue that every club does. Celtic are an outlier in having what is a fairly traditional structure behind the scenes when it comes to clubs their size and having such involvement from the football manager in it. Ideally, you have clear barriers between the commercial bit of the club, the recruitment bit of the club and the coaching bit of the club. Everyone works closely with people they are comfortable working with and someone at the top co-ordinates things to make sure everything is going harmoniously. The CEO should be, in effect, a team leader making sure the money is used efficiently.

Of course, that’s currently Peter Lawwell and you are unlikely to find many Celtic fans behind him, who would generally take him as overpaid and overstayed his welcome. The former is certainly true from any cursory glance at football executive pay, the latter is likely inevitable for anyone, never mind in the light of agreeing to continue with a mid-season trip to Dubai in the middle of a pandemic in the middle of losing a title race by a distance. If nothing else, from the perspective of remaining the best custodian of the club, the best person to ensure shareholders achieve their dividends, Lawwell is having a season that is seriously taking apart his reputation. Lawwell has always been a bit of a pantomime villain who took flak over the cheap policy of the first half of the 2010s and is now taking flak over the splurges of the second half of the decade proving, if nothing else, that being a football executive isn’t the sort of job you want to get into if you have thin skin.

To be fair to Lawwell, if you reduce his job to just the “company” aspects as opposed to the “club” aspects, then any issues this season can probably just have the word “coronavirus” added as an excuse and him given a free pass. The sheer optics of the thing (Dubai, keeping Lennon on after protests) is as much a Dermot Desmond thing as it is a Peter Lawwell thing. Celtic’s issues are, of course, a far cry from the far more serious issues impacting many clubs in Scottish football. Any fan of a club who has wage cuts and the potential for existential peril would surely swap that for Celtic’s problem of merely being a bit crap.

I accept my take on things is a bit different because of the experiences I have and the sort of football I watch. I also accept that a buy low sell high policy around identifying markets and players that can be worked on and turned into very, very good players has an inherently lower strike rate than paying more and getting successful players at prime age but that policy isn’t exactly working at the minute so may as well save money for the same results!

To conclude, if Celtic ask (which they won’t), this is broadly what I’d do.

But it ignores the one key rule of working in football - building relationships. You cannot hope to build a successful outfit without doing the hard yards and speaking to everyone and making a reputation as someone people can do business with. That’s possibly the biggest bridge Celtic need to build - with the fans and with the people who can help across Europe because certain relationships have been neglected and certain relationships have been supplanted.

I don't want the title to sound like I'm attempting to write some epic series. I'm more surprised than anything that the first post was so well received. As I mentioned in my previous post on here- I personally think that by scaling back your ambitions and intentions, focussing on the tiniest actions and letting go of too much need for a return on your efforts you are far more likely to either do something a little worthwhile that you can benefit from or even surpass these humble goals with something closer to your unrealistic goal than you would otherwise.​Apologies in advance again if I hit anyone too close to the bone and please bear in mind that I have probably been there.​(Side note: On browsing through yesterdays comments I think there are some people that could do with a 30 or 60 day detox from self help. Most stereotypical famous entrepreneurs (not all btw) are either quite aggressive/ arrogant or quite 'know it all-ey'. From what I recall anyway.They're either strutting and yelling and power shaking the soul out of people or they're trying to come across as some type of hippy wizard who just 'knows' everything and can see round corners.Again, to compare that to the people I personally know- they are far more ordinary than any of the personalities- they're far less intense barring a bit of good old enthusiasm.I can't quite think of how to describe the ones I know but one thing that covers it is that they are all great to socialise with and good at parties, I can imagine the ones I haven't been to a party with are also.I don't mean they are the life and soul by any means- some of them are found with me in the kitchen or corner- what I mean is that they'll talk about varying and interesting things, will bang out a few dad jokes or take the p!ss out of others and themselves.They like a laugh an most of them did before they made it.Every single one of them has a pretty involving hobby/ interest outside fo their work or business (I've now written a list/ mind map of these people to help me write about them!) and I wouldn't describe a single one of them as intense or preachy.Actually come to think of it- I believe deep down that a lot of them come across as being aware how lucky and possibly average they are.This was a big realisation I came to myself prior to 'doing well' and I now feel better in myself with this opinion.- Lighten up, chill out, put more effort into your hobbies and outside interests (or get one), laugh; and enjoy life a bit more.​Dont try to find Opportunity Everywhere- Don't Think of everything as a potential business.Bear with me on this one.​A few years ago, after harassing my health service for several years prior to get me in front of a shrink to diagnose me with the Adult ADHD I 'knew' I had, I was finally aloud to go in for some tests- the lovely Indian lady doctor told me the reason I kept getting into a funk of lack of focus, indecision and spiralling 'anxiety' (which has similar symptoms- more on this later) was partly due to the fact that I had Seasonal Affective Disorder (and partly due to the fact that I was sadly desperate for success- she knew!)I was told by her to get a blue light and try mindfulness. Of course I took that as 'become a meditation teacher who's not into the woo woo and open a centre' and 'start a specialised website that provides advice to sufferers of SAD and sells blue lights etc'.I then went home, looked up all the keyword search volumes and started to analyse the competition- I felt sick when I realised the lo and behold someone had beaten me to it... by at least 20 years. The keywords were really competitive and it just wasn't worth it.I begrudgingly bought a light from the top result and when it came I think I kinda hoped it was crap.These last few winters I've actually used the blue light in the mornings and feel far better this time of year than I ever remember.I know that many of us that are naturally drawn to entrepreneurship are problem solvers, opportunity grabbers and make things betterers but we only have so much creative energy and decision making juice in us each day.By looking at every damn object or service we come across as something that we 'could get into', it drains our radar and puts everything into the same swamp of ideas.I think it's better to be more of a disregarder- again Im sure that the people I know know this.I've personally found that the businesses that have happened for me were a bit like with me and my wife. The first few encounters were random, meaningless events... we spent a little time together and took things slowly with no agenda. Then without even realising it we were in love and then married with children.- The opportunity will come if you let it and you'll just know when you know.​Time for some Do Do's(Stop it Chandler!)Finally, some things that can be done!Like I said, I think having a business is great, has made me a better person and has made me a good bit better off. I genuinely attribute a large part of my 'average' success and subsequent happiness to things I stopped doing rather than new habits that I formed but here are a couple of things I and those I observe do/did and may be worth trying yourself.​When you stop fantasising, researching and frantically flicking through motivational books & videos, you're left with some space that needs filling.I already mentioned hobbies and interests, but I'll cover that after what I think should head up the list.​Spend time with other peopleI haven't called it family or friends etc as I don't want to marginalise anyone who doesn't have them. I don't want to brag but I am lucky in this sense- if you're not so, I genuinely think you can do something about that.I also appreciate that people may be shy, be introverted and/or have social anxiety.I still think that its really important that you spend more time with the people you like spending time with or go out and find some. I guess it doesn't matter if they are online even- just spend time chatting and getting to know others more intimately... and remember, not too serious yeah.Have a laugh, get drunk, go fu shi up, go bowling, play frisbee, walk/ hike, play pool, fish, shoot, dance, knit... whatever..... with other people. More importantly make sure its people your'e not trying to sell to, buy from or otherwise advance yourself in business/ finance.Also, when things get going in your business life, don't bore these people with ita) It usually is boring andb) they like you cos you're who you are- not what you are.​Worthwhile wastes of time- AKA Hobbies and interestsYep, I know I'm beating this drum to death- trust me, its important.If you're the active sort, go and do something physical, just drop the goals and the aims etc, especially if you're into bodybuilding or running etc. Swing on some bars or look up calisthenics if you want to use your muscles. Take a look at woodwork, building heavy things or something like that.Try not to replace your addiction to being an entrepreneur/ wantrepreneur with another addiction though.You're just killing a bit of time and giving yourself something to take your mind off of things. Using your body and mind for something other than 'trying to succeed'.Remember- no outcomes. You're doing what the soft headed teacher told you at school about just taking part and not winning.Although I like video games, I don't like to feeling I get after sitting down in front of screen for too long so I can't play them. I do love movies and gripping documentaries so probably watch about an hour a day and film or two at the weekends after the kids are in bed (usually with beer/ wine and snacks).A few years ago I would be sat the on my laptop or iPad 'looking things up'. I couldn't even bring myself to enjoy a few hours in the evening to watch a film. Jeez- what a waste.I've taken to building things and renovating my house- it's coming along quite well, I'm really improving my DIY skills and am amassing a fine array of tools. I've built a shed out the back, moved the kitchen from one end of the house to the other- according to the mortgage broker I've added nearly 50k to the value of my house.... what's important though is that I've really really enjoyed it. If you are in business and are feeling disillusioned, give yourself a bit of a break- systemise and consolidate a few things and try and get yourself on a plateau.​Of all the self-help and motivational things I hate most and feel are the most damaging- it's the 'It's only too late if you don't start now', 'Quit your job', 'Drop out of college' crap.If you want to start a business and get started, you would be far far better doing it small and part time alongside a job.I know you're tired on an evening and just can't get your brain to do something- I've been there.You're not thinking small enough yet, you're too caught up in whether you will be wasting time on something without an eventual payoff for it or whether it's worth it and will lead to the fast track of being a millionaire or more.Seriously, give yourself some space- take the next few weeks/ months to just enjoy doing nothing and then when you're ready- Start Really Small.If you're not sure what business to start- keep doing nothing. Stop resisting the real world- it will be there along with all it's wonderful opportunities when you come back to it. You'll hopefully be more realistic and willing to be a shade more mediocre when you come back.If you hate your job or someone in it, the next ones for you.​Figure out how to Tolerate Yourself and OthersAnd by others, I also mean other things.I actually think it's rare that we actually hate our jobs.I think it's more likely that we hate the fact that we are there.Whether it's because we feel too good for the job and it's inherent shortcomings or we can't really believe that we are on the same pay scale and worthiness as some of the dumb@sses we share our workplace with- we are really hating our belonging to that situation more than anything else.In order to move, and again this is the direct result of conversations with some of the successful people I know, we have to transcend the situation.Yes, we work alongside some horrible/ stupid/ pedantic/ lowly/ very special (not good special) people and hence in the eye of our colleagues and society we are on the same level as them.I feel for you and if we met I would quite possibly agree that you are better than them. Feeling bad about it isn't going to help you though so you must transcend.I'm not quite sure how the universe or its evolutionary system works (sorry Abrahamic religion people) but I think it's kind of a promotion system.I'd bet that the fish that made it onto the shore and grew legs were the descendants of the better of the fishes- I just don't think evolution created reptiles from the offspring of really crap fish- like 'Hey youre terrible at swimming and eating other smaller fish- you should try being a lizard".I think then, that it's kinda the same in society and as I said, in particular with my self made friends. Quite a few of them actually got into their present business by the way of an opportunity presented to them by being good at their previous jobs.It's similar to me as well. I ended with my 'day business' as I turned myself round and decided to start working hard at what I was doing and putting the troggs to the back of my mind.It got noticed and I was given several pay rises, I then ended up on the radar of my friends dad who owned his own business and asked me to run a project for him. 4 years later I'm flying and have invested in several other ventures/ people since.- Transcend and overcome the drudgery of what you are doing now while you are still there.Move on when its time and you're ready.​SystemisationI've decided to make this a separate post as it really covers too much for an already far too long post- I'll let you know when this is up fully but for now....Turn everything you do into a system.When you do eventually get going, think of every single step as something you might have to do again. Make a game out of making things into a system. Using either a basic paper notepad/ filing system or one of the free or built in word processors or spreadsheets, make a list of the things you are doing.It will speed up any rework, it will make you better at remembering things and it may force you into trimming wasted activities out of your day.You might feel silly writing down "Spend 4 hours browsing r/Entrepreneur" followed by "Watch 10 random guru videos back to back- but only halfway because they haven't given me the missing secret yet and the search must continue hastily"I promise I'll add more to this in the week but for now- Think 'Systemise It'.​The last couple of Dont'sI hope the majority of these items being dont's doesn't put you off- I do think you can do it if you get realistic and start being easier on yourself. If you start evaluating them and heaven forbid buy any, you are fantasising and feeding your delusional side.Pen and paper works fine if not better than most apps. Particularly for a one man band or small team.​TalkingThe last but not be ignored thing I have noticed in others and has turned my life around since I stopped, is the ability to work on my stuff in silence and to keep one's counsel in general.If you need to tell people what you are doing, I think you are giving yourself some kind of reward internally. If you're getting the reward from telling your friends, family or colleagues- you won't feel the need to get the reward from selling or creating something when you finally get started.Bigging Up your business may have the same effect. You may not need to take it to the next level or wrap it up into a more passive income with the work being done by others if your ego is already getting it's hit.Secondly, it increases the anxiety towards the fact that you must be doing something right now. Curator Andrew Hunter explains why he quit the Art Gallery of Ontario:

I have always been concerned about the role art museums play in the wider world, about how truly engaged they are with the critical issues of our times. I’m fortunate to be able to teach regularly on museum and curatorial practice (currently in the graduate program at OCAD University). We often begin with the origins of the contemporary museum, which was born out of the private collections of wealthy Europeans who had built their fortunes on the extraction of resources, and people, from the most vulnerable nations in the world.

Out of this dubious practice evolved public educational institutions, or so they self-described. Really, they were outward displays of power that reinforced class division and validated the corporate and colonial systems that had made their founders rich. From wealth came power and then cultural dominance: museums set social rules, coercing the broader public toward shared values they deemed to be “acceptable.”

Is the internet changing time? Laurence Scott writes:

The computer scientist and cyber-philosopher Jaron Lanier, who coined the term ‘virtual reality’ and who has written with both optimism and despair about the trajectory of the internet, believes that digitisation’s prodigious memory will be key to a sustainable global economy based primarily on exchanges of information. In Who Owns The Future?, he outlines a possible world in which data is the central commodity and all of us are properly remunerated for our contributions, conscious or involuntary, to the profitable crunching undertaken in Big Data’s storehouses. A simple example is that if you and your spouse meet on an online dating site and eventually get married, then you will receive a ‘micropayment’ every time two other people in the future are successfully matched up based on algorithms of compatibility to which your own happy coupling contributed. Lanier argues that since the data you provide – interests, profession, goals, politics – continually refine and improve the dating site’s ability to pair people, then you should own a share in the efficiency that your information nurtured. In this system, our digital pasts, archived across the network as data, resemble an actor’s filmography or an author’s back catalogue, an ongoing source of royalties. Such a model echoes Airbnb’s desire for everyone to ‘build a history’ online. Here the past is privileged in the way of all valuable things, as unforgettable as any personal treasure. Lanier’s design proposes an economy of remembering, whereby not even the smallest link in a lucrative data chain is forgotten. There is zero tolerance of structural amnesia in this system. As Lanier remarks, ‘Cash unfortunately forgets too much for an information economy.’

Back in 2003, Saddam’s novels were widely discussed among Arab intellectuals exchanging accusations of writing for dictators for money, or under threat. The interest in “Saddam Hussein’s world,” as one Iraqi novelist once described it, was a serious western fetish after the Iraq war. Despite the fact that the man ran a bloody and exciting life, in all impossible ways, the scale of horror and violence was not satisfactory for western eyes. They needed play-cards, movies, novels, video games, private recordings, and all sorts of things to complete a picture of the enemy. It was the best way to abstract the mass destruction of Iraq as something far, far away, on another planet, in Saddam Hussein’s world.

The Low DownThe Progressive Alliance continue to search for a new leader. In the meantime, there’s been some grumbling in the back rooms about the lack of viable Progressive Alliance contenders for PCW’s top titles. There is only one wrestler- ‘The One Man Hollywood A-List’ Stone Chism- considered to be in the top elite tier in PCW at the moment. Chism washed out of a chance for a PCW title shot by losing last Friday to the SEC’s Butch Fullmer in Elkhart, Indiana. However, there are still those within the P.A. (Nancy Pelosi, Elizabeth Warren and Al Franken) who believe Chism should have automatically received the next title shot against PCW Champion ‘The Prairie Populist’ William Daniels Bryan.

Professor McCarthy’s WarningAnd speaking of the Progressive Alliance, Professor McCarthy, backed by his flock which includes Codee Pink, Emily S. List, the Green World Order and the Young Jerks, made it clear to the Progressive Alliance that if any P.A. member tried to co-operate with CEO Trump or reach across faction lines to work with the American Patriots that they would take the offenders out themselves. Said Professor McCarthy: “We don’t need to work with the American Patriots. We need to shout them down and shut them up.”

First on their radar to smack down- the Progressive Alliance’s Blue Dog D for re-forming the Bi-Partisan Dream Team tag team.   Professor McCarthy vowed to shout Blue Dog D down for colluding with the enemy at the expense of the P.A.’s stated goals.

McCarthy’s Flock also promised to disrupt both title matches at Hack’s Rusty Nail Saloon this Saturday night because of the lack of Progressive Alliance involvement.

The Sports Entertainment CorporationIf the Progressive Alliance are down, the SEC is definitely up. If events fall in their favor over the weekend, the SEC will hold the PCW and the PCW Tag Team titles. Mr. McMann appeared on Jason Whatley’s ‘You Know I’m Right’ wrestling podcast this week and hinted that ‘big things’ were coming down the pike for the SEC. “It’s really an exciting time,” McMann told Whatley. “I can’t speak of what we have in the pipeline but I promise you this- it will blow your mind. Total out of left field stuff.”

TransactionsExpect to see the official full time return of former PCW champion Average Joe and possibly Farmer John as well to the roster in the next couple of days.

PCW HOUSE SHOW REPORT

Main Event: Union Jack Taylor charging at Ken Worth (L) James the Jeep Worker on the deck with ‘No Frills’ Chris Escondido standing over him.

PCW landed in Dayton, Ohio Friday evening for a house show, one night before the big television taping at Hack’s Rusty Nail Saloon. Seven matches were on the card and the show began with…

(sung to the tune of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles theme song):“Beer bellied softball playing ninja Beer bellied softball playing ninja Beer bellied softball playing ninja Heroes with a six pack- of beer SOFTBALL POWER!”

Led to the ring led along by their red-headed valet April O’Neale, Hank and Tiny of the Beer Bellied Softball Playing Ninja hit the ring to start off the program.

The Beer Bellied Softball Playing Ninja (Hank and Tiny w/April O’Neale) defeated Jordan Metzger and ‘Pizza Delivery Guy’ Josh Jackson @ 7:26-BBSPN isolated Metzger in the match. Josh Jackson ran in and ended up tossed to the floor by Tiny. Hank went for a senton but Metzger knocked him off the top rope. Hank broke out the mini baseball bat numchucks and cleared the ring. Then Tiny guzzled down a pitcher of beer in mere seconds to set up the Doomsday Breath of Death. However, Jackson snuck in a near fall on Hank before Tiny made the save. Finally, Tiny sized up Jackson and let out an epic, ring rocking belch (ie…Doomsday Breath of Death) and that settled the match.

E.J. Flack

Manager E.J. Flack came out next with the Millennial Man, flush from actually pinning David Litterman during a handicap match last week, and the millennial exuded confidence. The Millennial Man declared he was ready to truly Narfle the Garthok and demanded a title shot right here and now.

PCW owner Dawn McGill walked out to the stage and told him “No. No you’re not ready for a title shot.” Flack continued to pump up his wrestler. McGill told Millennial Man this next match will show just how ‘ready you are’ for a title shot. Millennial Man told her to bring it on.

McGill: “Yeah, it’s being brought.”

*”Ka-Ching!”- Shania Twain*

Out walked the King of Greed Gordon Guyko holding up a velvet painting of ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit. Walstreit walks out on stage dressed in an expensive suit. Walstreit shows off a wad of cash in both hands and later parades around the ring holding up the velvet painting.

‘Wall Street Market Analyst with the Man Crush on ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit’ Kirk Walstreit (American Patriots) defeated The Millennial Man @ :15 -Here’s the match. Millennial Man cried out “NARFLE THE GARTHOK!” and ran at Walstreit. Walstreit swept him up and dropped him with his first offensive move- the Stock Market Plunge. Cover. Three count. E.J. Flack facepalmed as the match unfolded. Back to the drawing board.

Suffice to say, no title shot in MM’s future.

The Bi-Partisan Dream Team: Blue Dog D (Progressive Alliance) and RINO-The Wonk Machine (American Patriots) defeated Average Joe and Brad Company via DQ @ 8:35-Both teams were delivering a nice match for the PCW fans until Professor McCarthy and his Flock also came to ringside. The GWO and Young Jerks attacked Blue Dog D and referee Davey Keels had no choice but to disqualify Average Joe and Company.

RINO, Average Joe, and Brad Company attacked back and a full on ring brawl developed. However, Professor McCarthy’s group had the upper hand and numbers until…

“Do You Hear the People Sing” from the Les Miserables soundtrack came on and ‘Red Solo Plastic Cup’ Ray McAvay along with the rest of the Les Mis raced down to the ring from the Les Miserables section. After getting glitter bombed last week by the GWO and their cronies, McAvay couldn’t wait to get his handles on one of the GWO.

McAvay got on the microphone and issued an open challenge to anyone in the GWO. GreenPete answered the call and we had an impromptu match.

‘Red Solo Plastic Cup’ Ray McAvay (Les Miserables) defeated GreenPete (Green World Order) @ 9:20-McAvay took his time slowly dismantling GreenPete. He laid in the kicks after a backdrop driver and then dropped GreenPete with a McGill Bomb. McAvay covered. The Young Jerks (Zenk Cryger and James Idahola) crashed the ring and made the save. Anna, the Young Jerks’s foul mouthed valet, grabbed the microphone and started shouting abuse and dropping f-bombs towards McAvay and the Les Miserables.

Heartland Champion Charlie Blackwell and ‘No Frills’ Chris Escondido (Les Miserables) hit the ring and they tossed out Cryger and Idahola. GreenPete charged McAvay from behind. McAvay utilized Patches O’Houlihan’s Dodgeball Defense (dodge, duck, dip, dive and……dodge) and GreenPete steamrolled through Anna instead. McAvay slapped on the Dragon Sleeper. GreenPete tried to roll out. McAvay wasn’t letting go and GreenPete tapped out.

Impromptu Press Conference with PCW CEO Donald Trump

Backstage-Trump decided to have a quick presser to give those people (ie…most notably the Wrestling Guys Fred “Thunderbolt” Smith and “Long Haul” Rick Shaw) who didn’t get a chance to ask questions last week because Colleen Crowder, low level reporter for the New York Times trying to make a name for herself, and Dan Miller, low level reporter for the Washington Post also trying to make a name for himself, dominated the time allotted.

-Smith and Shaw asked a question about when and if PCW would be holding a pay per view show. Trump replied that the long term answer is yes- but at the moment under the current circumstance- not yet. He added that he works in close consultation with PCW Owner Dawn McGill and the subject is on their punch list of things to do.

-The next question concerned Trump’s ‘fans first’ initiative and how the implementation of his plan was coming along. Trump reported that unfortunately, there’s a lot of entrenched people within the PCW organization who don’t want the plan to go away. Trump reiterated that the Washington Beltway Elites are fighting tooth and nail to keep their front row privileges but “it’s going away and actual real life PCW fans will sit in the front rows for the shows.”

-A third question came from the floor about Trump’s upcoming ‘State of PCW’ speech coming up this Tuesday night but before he could answer, Crowder and Miller walked in and created a scene. Crowder accused Trump and his press PR person Sean Spicer of trying to ‘censor’ them by only allowing press people who are favorable to him.   Miller demanded to know why low level reporters trying to make a name for themselves from BuzzFeed News, CNN, The Los Angeles Times, Politico, the BBC and The Huffington Post weren’t invited. Spicer they invited the ‘pool’ and everyone was represented. Crowder and Miller persisted. Trump finally told her: “Fine, you’re off the broadcast team for the next PCW Extreme Political TV show (that was taped Saturday night).

Things degenerated from there. Crowder and Miller vowed to show up at the taping and persist. Trump then exited the press conference and the show got back on the road. The ever present announcer guy walked out to the middle of the ring and dismissed PCW’s ring announcer Kimber Marshall while he’s been given the honor and privilege of introducing a living deity.

The announcer guy then hushed the crowd.

Announcer Guy (in a voice not unlike Michael Buffer): Ladies and gentlemen. I present to you the almost universally-worshipped king of the sun gods of all creation. He commands the chariot that rode across the sky during the day. He is the great, fiery globe in the sky, a welcome, nurturing presence to honor the season. He is the inspiration for those who would throw virgins into the gaping maw of a volcano – perhaps an Icelandic volcano – even though such shenanigans haven’t been acceptable since the 1950s. And just for your reference, he is, for 32 years in a row, proven to be one of UC San Diego‘s most enduring traditions in the Sun God festival- an all-day music festival celebrated by more than 20,000 students, alumni and friends. But that’s not important.

The lights turn off and a small spotlight illuminates the stage. First out, a group of former Arizona State sorority sisters walk out taking selfies of themselves on their cell phones and then texting them onto their twitter accounts. Next, two men follow carrying a golden sedan chair holding a six foot seven inch, two hundred and eighty pound man dressed in long flowing robes to the ring. Rah’s minions Bob Nye- Foot Fetish Guy, former children’s show host Happy Mango, former pro wrestler Baron Von Munchke- master of the claw hold, and some guy dressed as Captain Obvious follow.

Announcer Guy: Either way, you should thank your lucky stars and kiss his royal ass for gracing you with his presence here tonight. I give to you…the Sunshine God…RAAAAAAAAH!

The procession wound their way to the ring while the sorority sisters continued to make obnoxious faces, like the duck face expression among others, and took multiple selfies.

Next, the video screen came to life:

It’s 1946 in the Scottish Highlands.

On the hill of Craigh na Dun, British nurse Blaire Rendell heard the tell-tale buzzing sound as she approached the standing stones. This made her very happy.

Blaire Rendell (Scottish accent): Soon, I’ll be back with my true love Jamie and I will be truly happy once again in eighteen century Scotland.

Blaire went to the standing stones where the buzzing sound became louder and louder. She fainted and fell to the ground. When she woke up…

Blaire Rendell: JAMIE! JAMIE? JAM-AHHGH!

Voice (Canadian dialect): There you are. It’s about time you got here, eh?

…Blaire looked up and realized that she was once again on stage with Jack Fraiser.

Blaire Rendell: Dammit!

Disgusted by the whole situation, Blaire held out her hand while Fraiser reached into his bag and pulled out a bottle of Molson.

Blaire ripped the bottle out of his hand, opened it up with her teeth, and chugged the beer.

Rah w/his entourage and Jack Fraiser w/Oootlander Blaire Rendell defeated PBR and Kevin Collins @ 8:44-This match lasted fifteen minutes if you figured in both Rah and Fraiser’s ring entrances.

Post-match, Fraiser and PBR exchanged thoughts about domestic and international beers.

Sports Entertainment Corporation SegmentSports Entertainment Genius Mr. McMann and SEC mouthpiece Phil Finebaum came to the ring with A.J. Alabama and Stevie ‘War’ Eagles- who wrestle the PCW Tag Team champions Starz N. Stripes and Magnum P.O.’d Saturday night at Hack’s Rusty Nail Saloon for the title, and Butch Fullmer- who faces PCW Champion ‘Prairie Populist’ William Daniels Bryan for the PCW title.

McMann congratulated Heartland Champion Charlie Blackwell for retaining his title last weekend over SEC wrestler Gator Bates. McMann admitted that Blackwell has turned out to be much more formidable of an opponent than he thought and stated that Bates- as well as the SEC- would need to up their game to unseat him.

Finebaum sniped that Blackwell got the ‘blind squirrel’ benefit and turned his attention to Saturday night’s SEC doubleheader. He said that Alabama and Eagles had put their discord behind them and would function as a team with a single-minded mission- to bring back to the SEC the tag team title. Finebaum then promised that Fullmer ‘may surprise a lot of you.’ He believed that Bryan is a strong PCW champion but Fullmer had the full backing of the SEC and the SEC nation and that would be enough to bring the PCW title to the SEC.

Sports Entertainment Corporation (A.J. Alabama/Stevie ‘War’ Eagles/Butch Fullmer) defeated The Goatbusters (Peter Jenkman/Ray Scantz/Ergon) @ 7:26-Nice little run out for the SEC before the big matches Saturday night. Alabama and Eagles worked seamlessly together. Fullmer showed off his big power moves and got the pin on Ergon after a devastating Volunteer Slam.

Post-match, Finebaum took to the microphone again.

Phil Finebaum: What PCW needs…deserves…are champions who truly rise above the mediocre…the everyday person. No offense to William Daniels Bryan but he’s not an extraordinary wrestler. He doesn’t stand out. The SEC stands out. And tomorrow night, you will see the SEC stand out and start a long reign of domination over PCW-”

♫ “Do you hear the people sing? – Singing the song of angry men?”

The camera pans up to the Les Miserables section of the arena.  Ken Worth-American Trucker and ‘No Frills’ Chris Escondido stand up from their seat while Ray McAvay high fives Charlie Blackwell.

♫ “It is the music of the people. – Who will not be slaves again!”

Also rising from their seats, Tequila Sheila, General DeBauchery- who looks like a bizarre combination of the AWA’s Colonel DeBeers and Lt. Aldo from Inglorious Basterds, sporting a black captain’s hat right out of World War II, smoking a cigar and grinning obnoxiously, Al Cahall- sporting six pack abs…oh…that’s a six pack in front of his abs and the man smoking a cigarette in violation of several anti-smoking ordinances…as usual, Nic Koteen.

♫ “When the beating of your heart – Echoes the beating of the drums – There is a life about to start – When tomorrow comes.”

Blackwell led the way towards the aisle.  Bryan, McAvay, Tequila Sheila, and Escondido follow.  Then General DeBauchery, Cahall, and Koteen.  McAvay turns around and gestures to the Les Miserables to join him.

♫ “Will you join in our crusade? – Who will be strong and stand with me? – Somewhere beyond the barricade – Is the world you long to see.”

The Les Miserables rise up from their seats and line up behind him and Escondido as the pair start their way down towards the ring.

♫ “Then join in the fight – That will give you the right to be free!”

The camera spots Stormy and Starbrite, both sporting the brand new PCW Ray McAvay “Show Up. Punch In. Shut Up. Get to Work” baseball jersey, marching along with the other Les Miserables as McAvay and the procession head down to the ring.

♫ “Do you hear the people sing? – Singing the song of angry men. – It is the music of the people. – Who will not be slaves again!”

McAvay, Worth, Blackwell, Escondido, Tequila Sheila, and the rest reach the bottom of the steps.   One by one, they climb through the railing down to the floor and march towards the ring.

♫ “When the beating of your heart – Echoes the beating of the drums – There is a life about to start – When tomorrow comes.”

After the Les Miserables reached the ring, a man came down the aisle followed.

Tom Perez: “Ladies and gentlemen, my name is Tom Perez and I am the new leader of the Progressive Alliance. Tonight, we begin the long road back.”

-Back and forth match. James and Union Jack took turns working over Worth. The P.A. doubleteam work continued but finally Worth hit a head scissors on James and dived towards Escondido to tag out. Escondido went wild. He decked James with right and hands and superkicked out of the ring. Union Jack in- high cross by Escondido followed and that gets 2. Union Jack fired back with right hands. He ran the ropes and right an Escondido superkick. Cover. James the Jeep Worker dived from the corner turnbuckle to make the save.

The Progressive Alliance jumped into the fray in earnest. Ultimate Social Justice Warrior pulled Escondido to the floor.   Also at ringside, brand new Progressive Alliance leader Tom Perez who directed traffic. While Escondido and USJW battled back and forth, the ‘One Man Hollywood A-List’ climbed to the ring apron and hit a hurricanrana. Double team Swanton on the floor to Ken Worth by USJW and James. Escondido rolled back into the ring. Union Jack for the pin but only got a 2 count. Union Jack then hit the Scabbuster for the pin while Worth, now joined by Ray McAvay and Charlie Blackwell on the floor brawl battled James the Jeep Worker, the Ultimate Social Justice Warrior, and Chism as the show came to an end.
