I fell in love with France as a chaperone on a school trip in 1990. It was years before I returned but I kept the pictures of that first trip in my head as incentive to one day return. I could go on and on as to why I love France, and will, I promise. I would sound like the tourist board but unlike most tourists I wanted to get in deep. I wanted to move around Paris like a native, practice my French on unsuspecting shopkeepers and live La Vie En Rose! Reality strikes. I am a middle aged, married mother of 2 currently employed as a music teacher. Living La Vie En Rose was going to be tricky.

Fortunately for me, I married a really nice guy. My husband pretty much lets me do what I want. He knows I won’t go crazy and do anything stupid (I am the first-born after all) and I wouldn’t take a trip I couldn’t pay for so when I was wishing and whining (in that order) one night he said

“Honey, if you want to go to France again, go! Why don’t you see if your Aunt wants to go with you?” As I wasn’t keen on going alone (yet) and my Aunt had done some major traveling I thought hmmmm okay, that might be fun.

It was fun. I had picked up Polly Platt’s great guide to getting along in France “French or Foe”, done my homework, I knew the 10 magic words that would get me through any daunting situation, I knew how to dress and blend in with les femmes chic, I knew how the French think! I was ready! My aunt and I did Paris! Of course we did the big monuments, crypts and cemeteries. I did all the translating for my Aunt, her French was limited to BOHN-JOOR and MERCY. I was feeling confident in my linguistic skills. Proof in point—As we stumbled off the plane and into the train to the city, I approached a group of 20-something women and spoke bravely:

“ Bonjour, Excusez-moi de vous deranger, Mais est-ce le train a Paris??”

“Oui, madame, c’est le train pour Paris”.

In Paris 10 minutes and I’d already blown it. Damn those prepositions anyway. Not to be cowed by failure I pasted a pleasant look on my face (no big smiles or grins in France) whispered an embarrassed “Merci” and slunk to my seat. This was not the only time I would embarrass myself with my French. As Cathy (that’s my aunt) and I explored the Crypte Archeologique near Notre Dame I was heard saying to the man in the ticket window:

“Bonjour monsieur, deux billets s’il vous plait. Er…il y a un prix reduit pour ma vielle?”

I had just asked for a reduced price ticket for my old lady. I know, I know…I don’t know how it came out like that… The man in the ticket window looked at me with shock on his face. Oops. Quickly I tried to salvage my pride and said:

“Je regrette, je ne sais pas le mot pour “senior citizen”. I’m sorry, I don’t know the word for “senior citizen”.

“’Les Personnes Agees’, madame”. He said shaking his head slightly from side to side. I said thank you and we moved inside quickly. I am sure that my gaffe was the topic of the dinner table conversation at his house that night.

Now these minor linguistic faux pas might have dissuaded the average traveler from speaking ever again but it just made me more determined to improve. After all, I was an ambassador of the US and believe me, relations between France and the US had not yet recovered from the post 9-11 Freedom Fry debacle. It was my destiny to be the one to help improve diplomatic relations between the two countries.
