I have made the horrible mistake of finishing a book. there are no more theories to ponder, lore to wonder, endings to muse, simply only emptiness that all is well. it was pleasant, to waltz into this new universe, to root for the heroes, to watch character after character sacrifice themselves for the good of all. and now it’s over. and I am left with nothing but “the end.” how awful it is to have the whole story within your hands. to have your questions answered. there is nothing more.

🍂September 2023 Reading Wrap Up🍂
I can’t believe we are moving into October! I’ve been incredibly busy with school work these past few months but I think I can feel myself getting into a routine which means I’m going to try to read a lot more for myself :) I only read a measly four books this September, but October looks promising (A Curse for True Love AND Chalice of the Gods?!?!?!?).
🍂Veiled by Benedict Jacka🍂
Rating: 3/5
This was an absolute curve ball. The sixth in the series (and for some reason the one that I started with) I didn’t expect to like this book at all. The characters were lively and interesting and there was a huge emphasis on political intrigue and corrupt government systems that really engaged me. One minor thing that got me was the fact that our main character is like half an interesting guy with magic powers and half exposition machine. You could start this series from any point and get exactly what’s going on because he explains every single thing that happens. It wasn’t a huge problem for me since I started on book 6 but I can’t imagine how it would feel to be a longtime reader having to listen to explanations about the worldbuilding over and over. I plan to read the rest of the series at some point (although it is 12 books so maybe not right away).
🍂The Silvered Serpents by Chokshi Roshani🍂
Rating 3/5
On the opposite note this book was exactly what I expected. I don’t know, the Gilded Wolves series so far is sort of underwhelming for me but at the last second, Roshani makes me want to keep reading. I felt like I was able to better connect with and care about the characters because we now have the backstory of The Gilded Wolves to build upon so I enjoyed that. Some characters jumped out more and I can say with certainty now that my favorite character is Zofia (ily). I definitely think the plot comes second to the characters and their relationships, but once again I found it a little difficult to fully invest myself in either. I definitely enjoyed it more than the first book even though it didn’t fully hit the mark for me.
🍂The Odyssey of Homer (translated by Emily Wilson)🍂
Rating 4/5
Reading this made me wish I had taken Greek so I can gain the scope of understanding that it takes to fully appreciate this translation. Before I read this translation I was of the opinion that The Odyssey is The Odyssey is The Odyssey no matter who the translator is. The way that Emily Wilson went about translating her version of the Odyssey really left great impression on me simply because she made it feel so fresh (I want to say modern but I don’t think that’s the word for it). It was fun to read and even more fun to read aloud in the iambic pentameter. Eagerly anticipating reading her translation of the Iliad.
🍂Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson🍂
Rating: 3.5/5
OKOKOK I know that Mistborn is THE fantasy book for some people. It was not for me. I thought that Sanderson’s magic system was interesting but that there was a lot of room left for character development and individual relationships which sometimes felt rushed and half-baked. Allomancy in this book was the most important character and you could tell. Maybe I’m a sucker for a character driven plot but if Sanderson spent as much time fleshing out his characters as he did fleshing out the world building and magic system, I would have been more interested.
Yep that’s it. I didn’t get many chances to read last month and when you read and write all day sometimes the last thing you want to do is read another book (my worst fear being an English major honestly). This month felt like both the longest and shortest month of my life. I’m going to try to make a solid plan for what to read next but 90% of the time that does not go to plan and I end up rereading Six of Crows. I hope that October treats all of you well, read all your favorite horror novels (and drop some recs if you see this) and remember to support your local library.

spensa who looked up
there was this post by @wyndlerunner which was absolutely genius in my opinion (thanks for suggesting it @butwhybother) that asked if someone could draw spensa as the girl who looked up. it’s not the best but I attempted. I didn’t consider my first worth posting alone so I figured I’d wait until I finished another one to go with it. anyways, here’s the first one (and as a note, the thing she’s holding in her fist is her father’s pin)
Tumblr media
and then here’s the other one I did (which I loved this idea since the girl who looked up took a piece of light and it made me think that Spensa got to claim a star :))
Tumblr media
anyways, I hope you liked it even though it’s not exactly how I hoped or intended it to look. Absolutely let me know if there’s something you’d like me to draw or a song you’d like spoofed. ily guys, be safe!

favorite books of 2020!
tagged by @kagetatsumis. ily condy. <3 in no particular order! top 10 books i’ve read in 2020 are:
the blade itself by joe abercrombie — hello??? the best written characters i’ve ever read?? the only grimdark i’ve ever loved not to mention liked???? so many shoujo manga tropes (yes, shoujo manga tropes) subverted beautifully?? tbh this just has a lot of manga / video game tropes in general LOL. and i loved every single one of them.
the bird & the blade by megan bannen — the pacing of the plot was SO WELL DONE WITH THIS ONE. SO. WELL. DONE. the characters’ voices were distinct and immersive! the LINGUISTICS, the RESEARCH DONE TO MAKE IT THE LANGUAGE AND THE CULTURE OF THE ERA AND COUNTRY LEGITIMATE??? listen... 🤌🏻 also everyone knows i’m a hoe for family dynamics and the father-son + found family here was just. just!!! choice. ✨
radio silence by alice oseman — hi, i’m no contempoary expert but even i know this is a literary treasure of this generation. hands down best coming of age i’ve ever read AND IF YOU WANT TO a) cry a lot, get attached to and immensely relate even tho ur already in ur 20s or b) educate urself on our generation U SHOULD READ THIS. thank u.
the way of kings by brandon sanderson — if u like epic epic fantasy aka reading a whole ass saga about larger than life things and crying over a precious boy who’s well! the ‘perfect hero’ type of character ngefl! but hey epic highs and lows and the best fight scenes!! well then. you should read this.
the diviners by libba bray — just check out my review. this is definitely one example of perfect storytelling.
shadow of the fox by julia kagawa — i’m pretty sure this is the only book i pulled an all nighter reading this year. it was A WHOLE TREAT to read. i’m not usually fangirling about romance but geez louise this one’s SO CUTE.
girls of paper and fire by natasha ngan — THE BEST WLW IVE READ IN MY ENTIRE LIFE SO FAR. criers war, please get out of the way. ALSO THE WORLD WAS SOOO INTERESTING.
beach read by emily henry — DHDJDKDJD i’ve never enjoyed an adult contemporary ROMANCE so much and it wasn’t even because of the romance (maybe unsurprisingly). it was because of the CULT STUFF. look... all i can say is the healing from trauma here was written soooooo fucking nicely. HELLO! IT WAS AMAZING.
the poppy war by r. f. kuang — i was not a fan of the pacing (especially of the character arc, less so for the overarching plot) and that stuff’s really important to me BUT THE CULTURAL VALUE OF THIS BOOK cannot be ignored. especially since i’m east asian. alsooooo for a debut it’s insanely impressive for what it accomplishes to tell in 500~ pages. like. yes of course i’m fucking taking pointers from kuang.
no longer human + the setting sun by osamu dazai — yes i’m cheating by putting two in one bullet point, WHAT ABOUT IT. these were just so very well written and no other author had made me feel the way dazai has. i doubt anyone ever will. it’s such a unique flavor of EMPTINESS, how can they? ... that may sound horrendous but this guy is a king at symbolism and CLASSY foreshadowing. like if you told me that was the only reason why this is a classic, i would believe you.
tagging! @seomarshalls and @darrigann because i have no other friends.

my sock friend @yoursjudyabbott tagged me and this makes my brief tumblr return complete.
nickname: around here: rags
zodiac: aquarius <<same as sock
height: smol
hogwarts house: slytherpuff. Don’t tell me that isn’t how it works, I took the official quiz four times and got each twice.
last thing I googled: .... “feb zodiac” XD XD XD Can you tell I care nothing about the zodiac lol, I have answered that question a million times and I still never remember. Before that it was “WHEN ARE THEY GONNA RELEASE THE IN THE HEIGHTS MOVIE”
songs stuck in my head: Have my headphones in while Marc Martel does a live video, so this Elton John song he’s covering is literally in my head via headphones. “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down On Me”
number of followers: 1,047 - I had 1,050 when I came back but I blocked porn bots, you know how it goes.
amount of sleep: I had a migraine on Saturday so most of what I did on Sunday was sleep lol. Usually I get between 6-7 hours a night and that’s not enough. XD
dream job: novelist and librettist.
wearing: unironically but unintentionally wearing my Marc Martel “Impersonator” tee that I have worn into soft-fadedness. Jeans. No socks, so my feet are cold.
favourite song: Everything off of Needtobreathe’s upcoming album Out of Body. I’m an ntb stan, I have been playing those on repeat before sleeping and while driving and while doing chores.
favourite instrument: Violin (can’t play it) and piano (I can pick out notes, but not play it) and guitar (should be able to play it but it’s very rusty dusty from my previous teaching and ensemble days).
aesthetic: [[industrial librarian is such a great answer, sock.]] My aesthetic changes a lot. Currently it’s a lot of that south western bohemian desert stuff, but with mountains and books thrown in. xD
favourite author: I have many. Depends on the medium/genre/etc. I have read a lot, folks. Who have I not raved about before? Jonathan Auxier, Brandon Sanderson, Kathy Tyres, Gerald Morris, Maile Meloy, Patricia C Wrede are a few.
favourite animal: cAT <<<< I second, sock
random: I’m going on a roadtrip soon and I’m very excited. Also I ate animal crackers for dinner, so you all know I am a proper adult.
Tagging!
Oh gosh, I haven’t tagged my peeps in so long -tears well up-  Guys I literally don’t know who all is still online these days, so if you see this and you enjoy doing tags, please hop on! Tag me so I can see your post and come say hi, ily <3
