aight so im maybe a teeny bit emotional rn bc of Reasons so im gonna share a stupid story about me

idk if it’s really as funny as my mother made it out to be when i finally admitted this dark shame to her earlier- she wheezed like muttley for a solid 2 mins- but here we go

(i feel like this is a good representation of the sort of person i am)

okay, okay, so our story starts in a french classroom. i am 13 years old here so you can probably already guess how things are gonna go. it was double french on a wednesday morning or something and things were kinda slow. now, my french teacher for the first 2 yrs of my learning the language was just- the mpst lovely, genuinely bubbly, person i’ve ever met in my entire life. you wanted to be annoyed bc of how bubbly she was but she was so nice that you just couldn’t do it- at this point im convinced that she might have been some sort pf manifestation of pure joy. it was an Experience.

anyway, so one of the many, many, Things about this short blonde woman who adored tweed jackets and neutral-coloured slacks (that info wasn’t necessary but i thought i’d share anyway) was that she always always always had oranges with her. the first 2 desks of her room were always covered in papers, copybooks, and at least one basket of oranges. the few times that she didn’t have oranges in her room, she’d ask if anyone wanted any and then run out to her car and bring back a whole crate of them. to this day i have no idea where she got them all from or why she brought them to work with her. But She Did and that’s where we start.

so it’s a slow wednesday morning right, and Madame Redacted (we called her madame and she called us by more french versions of our names, idk why it was just what we did) looks around at fifteen-ish tired faces at the break between classes and is quiet for a moment. then she Perks Up and asks, voulez-vous des oranges? we have nothing better to do- we are Tired- we still think that weekly one page tests are the height of Stress- we know nothing of state examinations. so we all say (out of sync) , oui, si’l vous plait and she doles out the oranges.

i look at my orange doubtfully. it has been about six years since i last ate an orange- i dont know if i’ve ever even had a whole one before. i’ve never even peeled one before. (coincidentally i discovered a few months later that im allergic to oranges which isn’t relevant here but is a Fun Fact about Me) so slowly, awkwardly, i peel the orange. there is orange peel all over my desk and stuck under my nails. i don’t like the smell of it. i don’t like this. but i have Peeled it All By Myself and i’ll be damned if i’ll be the only one here who doesn’t eat the orange.

now the Issue here- apart from my slightly watery eyes- is that i have not eaten one of these blasted citruses since i was about seven or whatever. we don’t eat oranges at home- i don’t exactly watch people around me eat oranges on a regular basis. sure, i’ve seen orange slices, but i thought that was just a Choice people made, like apple slices, yknow?

In Short: at this moment in time i genuinely am unaware of the fact that most human beings eat oranges in those handy dandy little segments they break into.

you can probably tell what’s about to happen.

so im looking at this orange, not really wanting it but determined to Be Like The Others, and i think to myself, fuck it, and just. bite into it. like a goddamn apple.in this moment i am one of those people you sometimes see in public and think about later with great concern and mild horror.

i bite into the orange whole and my friend sitting next to me freezes before asking, what are you doing? i look at her, see the confused half-grin on her face before zeroing in on the little orange segments in her hand.

it dawns on me then, what it is that im doing wrong here, but. but but but i don’t want her to know that i don’t know how to eat an orange because that’s just- c’mon, imagine some 13 yo in your class who can’t eat an orange. just imagine how that would go down.

so i shrug, trying to play it cool. eating an orange, i say.

the girl sitting in front of me has overheard us. she turns around, assesses the scene and then asks incredulously, is that really how you eat them?

i nod, starting to feel nervous. i’m not used to people acknowledging me.

of course, now i am in what those in the business might call a Pickle, a Sticky Situation, a Spot of Bother.

i am Committed. i Have to eat this thrice-damned orange. People are looking.

so i just. i bite into the orange again. there is juice running down my fingers, pulp in my mouth, this is horrible. i don’t even like oranges.

juice everywhere. my nose is itchy and i don’t know why. i smell like goddamn oranges and people are still glancing over with disbelieving smiles.

the only thing which tastes worse than the villainous fruit in my hand- a bigger symbol of flaws and folly and foolishness than that Apple or whatever- is the regret and shame sitting deep in my chest.

after an eternity-after wading through a lesser-known circle of hell- after i have remembered why i haven’t eaten an orange in so long- i finish it.

there is pulp stuck between my teeth. drops of orange juice on my conjugation of pouvoir. my mouth tastes of ashen, fruity, despair.

but i have done it.

i am greater than hercules himself.

i never eat another orange in french class ever again and spend the next 4 years praying that no one ever remembers That One Time.

Please, my brother splurged on me and got me a ton of make up but I have no clue what I’m doing

alrighty, so, i’m gonna put in under a cut so i don’t clog the dash bc i love talking makeup and what i do so it’s gonna be long! i hope this explanation is okay but if you have any questions, just im me and i’ll answer them! also if you want any product recommendations, lemme know ^^

okay so, i’m gonna start with basics and talk skin and foundation. 

so basically, you can make any foundation look good as long as you moisturize and keep your skin cared for. it’s sort of like the foundation of a house, if the foundation is good, everything else will lay on top of it perfectly. 

so, before i put any makeup on my skin, i wash my face and put on a put of moisturizer. i let it soak in and then once my face is all ready to go, i put on primer. i either use a combo of nyx’s pore filler and nyx’s shine killer for my base or i use my hard candy ‘stick it to pores’ primer stick. i let that dry a little and settle into my skin and then i follow it up with my foundation. i use my fingers to place the product onto my face and then i follow that with a damp beauty sponge to blend the foundation in. 

once the foundation is on, this is where you can use cream products to contour if you’d like. i personally don’t use cream contour BUT i do take this moment to place a concealer (usually a few shades lighter than my skin) under my eyes, on the tip of my nose, the center of my forehead and my chin. i blend it out with the same beauty sponge. 

THEN, you can bake your under eye if you so desire. i have yet to find a good cruelty free translucent setting powder that doesn’t react to my concealer and darker the area under my eye so i don’t bake. but i take a loose powder and a big fluffy brush and set my entire face. you want to do this once your done with all your cream products because if you powder and then use concealers or w/e, it’s gonna be a bad time. 

OKAY SO NOW THAT YOU’VE GOT YOUR FOUNDATION ON, LET’S TALK CONTOUR

basically, you wanna take a somewhat smaller face brush (i personally use the real techniques contour brush ) and then kind of suck in your cheeks and where the cheek area dips, you just take a tiny, light amount of product and start blending your contour powder into the area. make sure you sweep it back into your temple/hair line just to make it more seamless! start light and if you want it to be darker or more intense, keep building it up until you have what you want. but start light because it’s easier to add then to have to wipe it all away and restart. 

then i use blush which is p self explanitory. just smile, and apply your blush to the apples of your cheek. again, start with less product and build up until you get the look you want.

at this point i move onto the brows, so let’s talk brows

so,  my brow routine is a little different than most because i’ve shaved off the tail of my eyebrow so i have to draw in my tail and then fill it in. i prefer using a brow pomade to fill in my brows but i do also like pencils. powders are good when you want a really natural brow but they don’t work well when you’ve shaved half your brow off lmao. 

so basically, like with the contour, you wanna use a small amount of product and a light hand when filling in your brows. the shape and style is up to you, but most people follow their natural brow. i start kind of in the middle of my brow and work outwards and then whatever’s left on my brush afterwards fills in the front. most people say to do a shade that’s two to three times lighter than your natural hair colour (if you’re a brunette or darker) but if you’re blonde, do a shade two to three times darker. i personally use a shade that somewhat matches my hair just because that’s what i like. 

once my brows are filled in with either a pencil or a pomade, i go through with a clear brow gel to keep the hairs in place. 

now let’s talk eyes!

so, i always start off by priming my lid. you can either use a light concealer or an actual eye primer. once the primer is laid down, i use either setting powder or an eyeshadow that’s closest to my natural skin colour to set the area so it doesn’t crease. 

and then we move into the eye look itself. basically, the one i did in the picture is a variation on a very common eye look i do. it’s just kind of a basic smokey eye, i guess? so i start on the outer corner and lay down the lightest outer corner colour (usually a light brown or light rosy colour). i blend it out really well with a fluffy brush and bring it into my crease, almost to the middle of my eye. then i go in with a smaller fluffy brush and take my darker shade (usually a darker rose tone or darker brown) and i focus that just on the outer corner of the eye. THEN i take my lid colour (i tend to like shimmers/light shades) and i sweep that over the lid, just to about where the darker colour starts and then i take a clean fluffy brush and blend the two together to marry the look and make it seamless. 

under my eye i usually use my outer corner colour and a small, dense brush and i sweep the colour under my eye from the outer corner to just after the middle of my lower lash line. i finish off the shadows with a light shimmery shade (sometimes a highlight) right on the inner corner of my eye. 

then sometimes, when i feel up to doing liner, i do my liner. i...am not good at explaining this because i basically just pray and hope it turns out right. so here’s a video for you. most of the first part is mykie joking around but she does give a good tutorial in the end of it lol

and then mascara is p basic so i just sweep on my fave and boom ur eyes are donezo. though a good tip, to keep mascara from getting on your lids, do your bottom lashes first. that way you don’t have to tilt your head down to do them once your top lashes are done and still wet. you feel?

now let’s talk finishing touches for the face.

at this point, i highlight. for my skin tone, i use shades like stila’s kitten, which are a little more champagney or i use hard candy’s rose gold highlighter. so the tone of highlighter depends on your skin tone. i use a fan brush to put the highlighter on the high points of my cheek and the tip of my nose.

and now we’re almost done. just lips left. 

i use liquid lipsticks so i don’t line my lips first since most liquid lipsticks i use don’t feather or bleed. but i do take a small lip brush and put a little bit of the liquid lipstick i wanna use on it and line my lips just to keep it looking neat because i have more control with the lip brush than with the doe foot applicator of the lipstick. once i do the outline, i fill the rest in with the doe foot applicator. 

now that you’ve got ur face on, this is where - if you want to - you can use a spritz of setting spray to set your work down.
