• even here his clothing style is slightly different from the others' because he is one of those darn youths.

• i like to think he stays the same height though even if tolkien describes him as tall because tolkien describes all the elves and men as tall so he can still be like 5'10 and count as tall

design stuff in general -- theyre in front of the fey manor in kurain village, theyre about 5 & 15 here respectively. obi sashes of the yukata are based off their magatama colours, was lazy with the patterns and just used some pattern brushes that look similar enough to other yukata patterns.

on the frame in the bottom right corner theres a tiny little fingerprint -- couldnt find maya, pearl, or mia's so i used phoenix's lol

their hairstyles are based off the picture with the broken ami fey urn, but its weird since its just their normal hairstyles ??? then again ive had pretty much two hairstyles in my life as well and the only real difference there is length and hair dye.

anyways thoughts about THEM -- since misty/elise left, morgan mustve raised them, right ?? but mia would have left at say, 18, then maya would have been like 8 when she left, and then all the stuff with like how the master of kurain stuff would have been handled -- i dont think mia was coming back. i dont think mia ever DID come back, actually. i wonder if maya knew this, if she realised even before mia died that she was gonna have to be the master. and with dahlia and iris, did mia play with them when they were kids, i wonder i wonder...when did mia know that she had to leave, did she ever realise about how much morgan was willing to do ?? did morgan ever hope that iris or dahlia was gonna be the next master, or did she realise they didnt have much spiritual power from a young age ??? did mia ever meet pearl ??? im so obsessed with the feys. such an interesting family.

I just wanted to say, I love the apprentices’ designs so much <333 the soft shapes vs sharp shapes is always a good way to tell personality, but I also really enjoy how they match with their names!!!

Coldpaw is fluffy and has cute lil saber teeth, Murkpaw’s design is SO satisfying to the eye and im obsessed with her bug motif, Sunpaw’s shapes have such a nice flow and the pattern on her face & back are sunlike, Rustypaw’s spots make it look like she’s rusting, Honeypaw’s patches looks drippy and her tail reminds me of a bee’s butt lol, Mistypaw’s curls are reminiscent of clouds (and his face ough i love him), Thornpaw’s pointy little spike stripe stands out like it’s coming from a stem along her spine, Fossilpaw’s jagged white marks and fossil-shaped swirl, Poppypaw’s little petal spots, and Smallpaw’s floppy ear-tip making her seem even more little…. mwah they are all so perfect well done

Wow, hey thank you for the nice words :).

In terms of advice, I'd say just be prepared for random stuff to go wrong.

DOWN SCALE.

Unless you have the wide open space required to house an extra entity, I'd say down scale it and make the wing span smaller, because I literally cannot put these anywhere lol. Me and my friends were measuring them by an estimated version of Tessa's height, assuming she was an adult Australian (160cm) and not a dead child wearing robot. The original wing span ended up being almost three and a half Tessas. Down scaling is definitely recommended.

Then going on to material, I'm going to be honest, I don't really know what any good substitutes for what I've been using. The best thing I can think of would be like cutting up one of those big umbrellas you see in like outdoor seating areas because they are built to be sturdy and light enough to to transport places. The blade part of the wings were made out of cheapo yoga mats, they are not Eva foam(idk if Eva foam is more expensive, but cheapo worked for me), they are some kind of material similar to insulation sheets just slightly thicker, I have the cutting patterns on the blog (the mats are 140x50x1cm) . Springs are something similar to "helical extension springs"(they pull things together, like trampoline springs) the strength of these will vary depending on how and if you downscale the over all project.

The general wing mechanism had to be redone a little bit but the new design is just based off an umbrella. It's good to use when you fold it in that the sections form a square in between the joints as a reference because it makes it easier to translate to the wings when drilling holes. The grey moving bar is on the outside now👇

I'll be reall, this part👆 needs a bit of precision. The two holes at the bottom have to be the exact same distance and stuff as each other so the mechanism works. You could probably find a way to optimise the mechanism but I did not (this was just easier for me at least)

The way all the blade parts go up is kinda cheesing it if you want all individual parts to work perfectly without extra materials. I was tying a string together on the bars and it worked to space the wings as I wanted to.

All in all, I'm going to be making a big ol summary post detailing all the stuff whenever I'm done fully.

Prop making and cosplay in general are things I probably can't comment on because I have never done cosplay and most of the prop things, I make are made out of random trash I can find that would cost dumb money if you went out to buy it new.

These for example are gutter or house liner plastic that was left over from a building site (gloves were uber cheap) and they were tedious and smelly to cut out and melt over an open flame, but if you want to do this too wear a mask for saftey unless you don't care about your lungs (which you should)

The claws were a lot easier to make. Easy enough that I made two sets (I think I went through the process of making these already)

Dreadfrost just has such a cool design!! I love the belly patterns and the way you draw his spikes. AND OFC IM OBSESSED WITH HOW YOU DREW INSIGHT SO MUCCHOUU!!! All his patterns are SPOT ON and I love seeing his wing stars!! The face he’s making is super accurate too- major RBF even if he’s content

i wanted her to be our beloved eve, but a little to the left. yknow. eve but something is off her usual characteristic bright colors ( the blues and yellows and greens she wears ) muted down to a dangerous degree. missing various iconic details like her earrings or hand-holding necklace, etc

something something, she's losing her sense of self while trying to figure out more about this new, hidden side she's just discovered. the side that's causing all the flowers to clog up her throat and all

also also. a subtle feeling of restraint in the way her hair is now a braid that wraps around her throat, also held together by black and white beads. and the hands, a very prominent theme in her art, now holding her chest - but in a "keeping her body together" kinda way, not in a sexy kind of way sadly

SO... after realizing how cool and fun of an idea it would be to turn Raph, Donnie, Leo and Mikey into an Oiraon i couldnt stop myself <3

Here we have: Mikey as an Oiraon!

Essentially, i challenged myself to get the "vibe" of whoever i was turning into an Oiraon come across in the design! Without yk, using their original names n stuff while adding my own personal flair.

I felt like an absolute genius borrowing the shell patterns and using those on his wings/neck i am 100% biased imo it looks AWESOME. This one is by far my second favourite (Leo's Oiraon is my fav, cant reveal him yet but youll agree with me when i do >:))

Theyre all getting different names that have a loose definition or meaning (because its FUN!! and feels weird if i keep the og name) SOOO, the name "Anatolius" is Greek for "sunrise" and "from the east". I feel like that fits them really nicely, PLUS its got so much nickname potential!!! My best friend nicknamed them Ant and i cant stop chuckling each time i remember xD

In Oiraon society theres lots of professions many can fill in and for this guy, OBVIOUSLY, i decided to make him an artisan because DUH!? Ofc he would be!!! And as a sign of being an artisan, they need a poncho <3

Ant works with paints, dyes, and fabrics. I imagine hes perfected a business of dying/painting feathers (Tzaoul' is's wings are his number 1 canvas) and makes absolutely beautiful desert scarves/shawls.

(fyi idk how to design apparel) i guesstimated whatever looked nice and ended up with this design that i kinda wish was real because id love to wear smth like it myself.

This is 1/4 of em, currently as of right now ive finished 3/4 and im only struggling on designing Raph's Oiraon interpretation (red is so hard for me to incorporate into a design??? wheeze)

TCD Stuff Pt. 2 - Costumes

alright so costumes. this one i might do more comparisons between my designs/ideas for costumes and the ones in this production. there are a lot of costume designs i have that i am supremely attatched to, so i kind of just think in terms of my designs lol. still, there are a lot of costumes in this show that i far prefer over mine

i just have to say that all the costumes were just gorgeous. i was told that they were handmade, and I can tell, they were simply so unique and beautiful, and you certainly couldn’t find them anywhere else. im gonna include a few pictures just from the show's instagram page bc i absolutely cannot do them justice.

The Storyteller costume blended in much more with the modern townspeople. the coat he wore was a different style and felt older than everyone elses, but he was still dressed in like “normal” clothes. this is pretty different from how i typically imagine it. it doesnt really aim to hide the fact that will + the storyteller are the same person (though, I suppose, it still would be a surprise to learn that they’re more than just played by the same actor)

all of the townspeople costumes seemed to work together very well. there was nothing that stood out too much, most everyone had some kind of button-up shirt (or something similar), most of them being white (a couple other colors, but nothing that stood out in a bad way), with different patterns/colors of skirts and aprons or different combinations of suspenders and waistcoats. no two costumes were exactly alike but they all went together very well. most of the main characters also fit this similar pattern for most of the show

perhaps the most impressive costume was Ma Riley’s massive hoop skirt. it took up space and was the center of attention, which fit’s Ma’s character very well. she would wear something like that, showing off her own abilities, and making sure that she was always the most noticeable person there. it had a bunch of different patterns of fabric throughout, feeling almost like a quilt in how many different patterns were featured on one skirt.

the show puts a lot of emphasis into the dresses that Constance makes. as such, it is difficult to design costumes that live up to what the show requires. I think the way this production handled it was genius. the dress Constance makes for herself to wear the wedding is gorgeous - with a gold bodice and a skirt in rainbow tulle, and a cute little cape around her shoulders. it doesn’t fit the rest of the town and its not SUPPOSED TO. this dress is supposed to set her apart from the town in a way that they become obsessed with, and demonstrate her sewing ability with something truly unlike anything else. she wears this dress for the entirety of act 2, with a select few townsperson costumes changing to fit HER style, not Spindlewood’s. the women of the town (those that have named characters) have their solid color skirts with a layer of tulle over top, and matching tulle as sleeves. the costumes are so brightly colored, taking their “normal townsperson” clothes and elevating them by incorporating Constance’s style.

which makes it hurt even more when they are still wearing these dresses when they turn against her.

other things i liked:

the tails on the mayors coat were SO LONG sometimes they would literally drag on the ground it was hilarious

will’s hat had a fun pattern on it

also he didn't wear a waistcoat for the entire show and put it on only to get shot

amelia’s wedding dress was GORGEOUS

constance’s other costume was a very cute floral-patterned dress. something that doesn’t fit in with the rest of the town, but isnt her own style, either. she stands out as different when she first ventures into town, but hasn’t entirely found herself yet

YEAH SAME on the being like Doubt.jpg about a relation between theodore and lewis on the basis of… skin color, basically, but the minute i heard “i couldn’t believe they were from vacuo,” that’s a deliberate choice to link these kids to the setting for the next major story arc, and that’s happening in conjunction with several developments in the 9.11 animatic that suggest history is about to become very important (soaring popular support for the crown—probable mountain glenn history-repeating-itself theme with salem razing vale—oscar mentioning vacuo’s history of colonization—plus the great war having ended with ozma’s use of the sword in vacuo).

it’s very. raises eyebrow. alrighty then!

so whatever lewis did after coming home, other than writing tgwfttw, probably has some narrative relevance—might be as small as something jaune needs to find closure, or it might be bigger than that, who knows, but if it was a hundred and fifty years ago and it matters enough to be in the story, then the story needs a vehicle to deliver this information in a manner that feels naturalistic and non-arbitrary. (jaune-stumbles-across-loved-one’s-memorial-statue-by-chance once is a believable happenstance; twice, a cheap contrivance.)

the simplest way to do that is to introduce a vacuan character with some connection to lewis, and the obvious choice there is a descendent, because lewis lived a long enough time ago that family lineage is kind of the only plausible reason for a living character in the present to have a meaningful personal connection to lewis.

(and it can’t be oz, because oz had no idea the ever after existed.)

this descendent-character also ideally should be prominent enough in the story to matter for reasons unrelated to their relation to lewis, to avoid feeling shoehorned in. and they are probably human, given the apparent rarity of interracial human/faunus couples.

that pretty much narrows it down to theodore, or the asturias twins. NOW hysterical as it would be for jax and gillian to be descended from lewis, finn asturias is obsessed with “the old stories about [his] family” and yet doesn’t drop even a single hint about the ever after, so i think we can rule that out.

which leaves theodore. hmm.

that picture in his office:

She still remembered that her attention had been drawn to one photo in particular: a black-and-white picture of a young girl in pigtails and a checkered dress with a small black dog. She hadn’t mustered the courage to ask who she was to Theodore. A daughter? A sister? Whoever she was, Velvet could see the resemblance.

plainly evokes dorothy, and even bearing in mind that there may be discrepancies (theodore is described as blue-eyed in the book but has brown eyes in beyond, for example)… there’s nothing in this photo to suggest a resemblance to alyx beyond ‘young girl.’ alyx doesn’t wear her hair in pigtails, nor does she have checkered patterns anywhere in her design, nor does she have a little black dog. so i doubt it’s her.

but black-and-white does suggest it’s old. ‘sister’ seems a lot more plausible than ‘daughter’ for that reason, and ‘mother or aunt’ even more likely than either of those.

(the other thing about a young girl with a small black dog in This story, is.

it’s a symbol for the deaths of the ozlem girls and the inescapable grief that underlies the whole conflict between ozma and salem—there’s a reason she sends a giant monstrous hound to capture oz and then huddles in the shadows miserably looking at conjured images of her daughters until oscar wakes up; the black dog reappears as this terrifying monster in conjunction with the surfacing of all this pain.

so the question is to what extent this small black dog in the photograph is Just Toto, and whether the specific narrative symbolism is or isn’t in play here; Did This Girl Die? that would preclude her being theodore’s mother but she could well be an aunt or great-aunt.)

of course the point of drawing attention to this photograph might be as simple as hinting at theodore’s quote-unquote real ozian allusion; not dorothy but the silver shoes lost in the desert. which is an interesting angle to consider with regard to this possibility of lewis being his ancestor, because on the one hand there’s the silver shoes carrying dorothy home yet becoming irretrievably lost themselves in doing so, and on the other there’s alyx, the white rabbit, guiding people home yet never able to return home herself. see the rhyme?

in a sense jaune and team rwby bring alyx home with them, in that they know what happened to her and if there are descendants of lewis still living in vacuo then the question of why she never came home can finally be answered. and if the descendent is theodore, then the intertextual confluence between him and alyx is more resonant than the surface dorothy-and-alice comparison; the silver shoes are the home the white rabbit returns to, as a memory, a hundred and fifty-odd years late. and it matters.

but also i have a little hamster wheel churning at all times in the back of my mind and right now it’s churning around: sixty, seventy years before the great war began, vacuo was a colonial territory of mistral—before the great war, it had no formal government, it wasn��t a state, and oscar references the history of colonization in the 9.11 animatic. so that history and the history of the great war—which was for vacuo a war for independence—is narratively salient. lewis was a child who grew up in vacuo during the fractious decades preceding the great war; he gives a face to this period in history.

and jaune told lewis and alyx not only that he was from remnant but that he was from more than a century in their future; he and lewis “compared notes on remnant.” jaune couldn’t believe they were from vacuo, “back before the war, before huntsmen.”

they compared notes.

jaune’s grandfather fought in the great war.

so lewis went back home to colonial vacuo fifty, sixty, seventy years before the great war knowing that the great war was going to happen. knowing that within his lifetime vacuo would fight for its independence and win. knowing that there would be peace in the end. according to what blake says in 9.2, in the book, alyx “didn’t know [afteran] customs and started a war between the townsfolk” and that takes on a really different subtext now that we know the story’s author was a man who grew up in colonial vacuo knowing that the great war was coming.

either lewis and alyx were vacuan, or they were mistrali but born in vacuo; either way the tenor of the girl who fell through the world suggests that lewis’ sympathies lay with vacuo. both options stand to be compelling if he acted upon this knowledge more directly than writing anti-colonial themes into his children’s book. or books. there is also the boy who fell from the sky, mentioned in after the fall, and alice’s adventures in wonderland does have a somewhat lesser-known sequel.

i doubt lewis fought in the great war himself—he was probably in his seventies or older by then—but if he had children they would have been of an age to fight for vacuo, and if lewis had passed down to them the stories he knew of what remnant would be like after…

y’see how lewis could have ended up playing a really important role in vacuo’s side of the great war, if he’d decided not to leave matters in the hands of fate? jaune told him about what the world would be like after the great war, but lewis also figured out that jaune knew more than he let on, figured out that jaune remembered a story lewis hadn’t written down yet. he knew that knowledge of the future could shape the future, because if it hadn’t been for jaune and jaune’s foreknowledge of his book, he might not have written it the way he did, as a guide for how to get out of the ever after.

so he goes home, knowing the great war will happen and what the outcome will be—or else knowing that it might happen that way. who did he become with that knowledge? what did he choose to do with what he knew? the one thing we know is he became a storyteller, and “storytellers have great power” is a prominent narrative theme.

salem inspired the world to rebel against the brothers by telling the story of what they had done to her, and speaking of her vision of a time when humanity could be free.

Thank you so much, that’s so sweet omg that means so much to me🥺💞💓 That’s such a hard question because I like a lot of their designs for different reasons, of course some of them I’m not a fan of but I feel like I can always find something I really admire!

I absolutely love Cerise’s design! I can’t get over her white streak of hair and the fact that she’s secretly the daughter of the big bad wolf is such a fun concept, it gives her hood multiple purposes which I love! Not only does she wear it to honor her destiny and mother, but to hide her identity. Though with all the growling she does I don’t know how she’s hidden it anyway. And don’t get me started on the patterning on her hood and stockings! And the BANGS😭💞

Lilly Bo Peep is also a favorite of mine and honestly I wish she had had a bigger part, I would’ve loved to know more about her. There are so many cool backgrounders it’s insane, the dedication is so admirable😔💓 The bangs over one eye, the multi length and multi colored hair, the pigtails, the cute little apron outfit and bonnet? Obsessed!!

Of course I have to put Duchess here, are y’all really shocked? I do have a few complaints about her outfit but I’m obsessed with her hair and hairpin. The pearls? The feathers? Love. I wish they hadn’t done a weird pattern on her skirt but that was definitely popular at the time of its creation, weird patterns were kind of everywhere. I love her pointe shoe heel things, they’re so cute and props to her for being that devoted LOL

There are so many other characters who have little parts of them I love, and some of them have beautiful special episode outfits which have my heart! I almost said Darling but I kind of hate her weird pink gem decor on her chest. I know it’s a throw back to what knights typically wore but I think it could’ve been illustrated better! She’s definitely a runner up tho💞
