Gaarmageddon Red Dia from Love Devi !! a card theme was present in an outfit i would die if i didnt draw it. no original masc version cuz it's literally a card wonderland theme so say hi to pathetic pushed over vermilion mayoi. also at this point i was admittedly getting quite pooped from all the drawing so unless i really wanted to see something i just didnt do it lol

mildly op (esp at the beginning with how hes kind of able to just use his stand really well w no problems altho i think thats true of most of the jojos that we have seen animated?)

i am emotionally attached to him and want to give him a big hug

the fucking way his character develops from licky man to best dad material is my favorite thing

his outfit is so so so good i would die to wear it

in general this man is one of my fave jojos characters and i get a lot of comfort from him

hes just really neat and has a good taste in music

he did his fucking best and i will always love him for that

imo the way that his death was drawn out was genuinely one of the most heartbreaking deaths in the entire series and fucks me up each time i think of it

i feel like he really is the one to hold the team together in a way that everyone feels cared for and saved

the fandom interpretation is normally pretty good of him overall?

hello jo, i hope you're doing well!! <3 sorry abt taking a while to get to this ask, i have been a little out of it, and i didn't want to half ass a reply to something as important as a natie themed ask....

this entire concept is 100% on my to-write list!!! i have a lot of thoughts about nate figuring himself out/figuring out who he is away from his family's expectations of him and the ideas people who think they know him have of him (since he's so popular, everyone thinks they know him, he can't escape the reputation that follows him around, etc etc).

in fact, since we're talking about this - i made a list of connected, nate-focused, stuff! and this response got RIDICULOUSLY long. so. 11-point bullet list focusing on nate, here you go!

you might enjoy my natessa fic "out of focus". it's not exactly this, but it is sort of the first time i dip my toe into the pool of.. whatever this concept is. nate lets vanessa buy him a shirt he would never pick out for himself. things go on from there!

i have a lot of thoughts about nate & ruby, specifically. we never actually got to see her, but i think he'd awkwardly gravitate towards her in that way that you do when you're young & queer and you meet an Openly Gay And Comfortable person for the first time. and i think ruby would see this and kind of adopt him/take him under her wing? anyway.

more natefic i am yet to write involves nate coming out to vanessa, vanessa being the first person he comes out to, it's after a lesbian punk concert and he's hyperventilating a bit and he KNOWS v will support him. she has literally shown him in a million ways that she's a good ally to the lgbtq+ community, and vanessa's just like, "what's wrong?" and nate is like. "nothing's wrong, and i really like you, but i'm not - i don't - " and then he says something awkward and stumbles through how he likes men, and vanessa gives him a hug and kisses his cheek and says "thank you for telling me that"

anyway i bring up #2 and #3 just to say that i feel nate has a sort of comfort with the abrams sisters that he doesn't have with anyone else at the time (he will eventually get here with blair and serena too, but in s1? they ALL had their own shit to deal with and i don't think nate was really in a place to open up to them, whereas vanessa & ruby aren't his childhood friends so in that way, it's easier, etc). and i love the thought of like. vanessa bleaching his hair super pale, ruby buying him a hair straighter (and of course he knows how to use it, he's blair waldorf's ex boyfriend what do you expect of him) and just. the abrams sisters - without even realising they're doing it - giving nate a space to explore who he is and specifically, his presentation

so we can either roll with nate being a trans man, which i LOVE, and am trying to write a fic about - OR - and it makes sense here, with these headcanons specifically, i feel like nate would maybe be one of those cis people who's explored their gender identity, realised they're cis, and therefore, is far more in touch with their gender than the average cis person?

connected to THAT, i have a fic in the works in which nate just presents... extremely femme. he goes super flamboyant, dresses in a way that puts himself on everyone's gaydar, etc etc. at first he does it to be like "fuck you" to his family, but after a bit he realises he actually really likes being perceived in that way, as a queer man, as a pretty queer man, and it makes him feel in control & good about himself to be able to do all these stereotypically feminine things WHILE identifying 100% as a man. putting on nail polish and mascara and gloss, wearing very femme things and heels, etc etc, it makes nate feel like himself in a way that he's never really felt before. (he IS a cis man.) dan bumps into nate at a gay bar, doesn't recognise him at first (this is a very au fic, i think they've lost touch since high school ended) and then promptly falls in love with nate AND has a gender identity crisis that goes a bit like "well nate maybe you can do these things and still identify as male but i can't" and it's just... trans dan my beloved.

unconnected to all that, you know what would've been fun? s2 nate is staying with the humphreys arc, and jenny... dyes his hair for him, and designs outfits for him, and basically both of them just. go thru a whole fashion revamp together.

i have a lot of ideas for futurefics in which jenny is like. 18, 19, etc and has a cool new line of men's clothing, but she doesn't have the $$ to hire a professional model for her clothes OR she wants the person modelling the clothes to be someone who Gets her mission statement in designing them (this is better but it could sorta be a combination of both) and essentially she awkwardly asks nate to model lingerie for her. he is like, of course! because i'm me, this doesn't go anywhere romantically, but if a jenate shipper wants to take this idea and run with it, go ahead, just credit me, lmaooo. i will definitely write this fic to centre around nate & jenny both being really gay, which is the other direction altogether, so that doesn't bother me.

since we're speaking about nate in lingerie, this fic of mine's first birthday is coming up in a few days! wow, it's been a whole yEAR.

so, disclaimer, any and all fics that centre around Identity... always take a lot out of me + i always have to be in a very specific headspace to write them (that's why the nonbinary dan series is taking ages, too). so while i really DO wanna write all the nates exploring how they present and, as the kids say, fucking around and finding out, it might be a while!

oh. this reminds me*. i REALLY have to finish writing my demisexual nate fic... it's a tricky thing to write. i have another fic im yet to write about how sleeping with dan makes nate re-evaluate a lot of things, in a very trauma survivor way (like an "oh, this is what it feels like to be with someone who respects me!" kind of way) and that... i want to write it sooo bad but i gotta do the idea justice. life is Hard.

Produce X 101 Position Evaluation Thoughts (Post ep 6/7) VOCAL/RAP POSITION

I just had a lot of thoughts after watching episodes 6 and 7 so just gonna rant here.

Firstly i just want to put it out there this the first time i followed a produce x 101 series for so long mainly because my main picks since the start are still there! (I’m looking at park sun ho and nam do hyun)

PLEASE DON’T GET ANGRY BECAUSE THESE ARE PURELY MY OWN OPINIONS WARNING LONG LONG POST AHEAD

So im just gonna go thru each performance and share my thoughts on each trainee of course im naturally going to be sort of biased so ill just follow my feelings.

VOCAL POSITION

4th. TO MY YOUTH stage,

I would say this was my least anticipated stage and i feel this is generally not a stage I would rewatch very often in the future. I’m not saying its bad in fact I love how emotional they are since I know very well how hard these lyrics hit myself being a avid bol4 fan. I just didn’t really like the arrangement of the song, its inevitable but comparing it to the original this arrangement seemed to dull out their voices abit as in it felt too loud. I think it was the adlibs that really sounded too loud when i was listening, it was emotional yes, but did it highlight their emotion as well as it could? I don’t think so. But other than that i do think this was a well done stage and finally i can start to see why everyone loves kim min kyu.

JIN WOO - I love that he chose this song because this song IS for all the teens out there trying to find their way in life and the lyrics just match him so well too and yeah it was just a good song choice i think.

SE JIN - i just like the tone of his voice its really soft and fluffy and it worked to his advantage in this song

WOO SEOK - He’s up in the ranks for a reason and he maintains that through this performance 

BYUNG CHAN - I felt like he got outshined by woo seok, maybe a poor song choice on his part, felt like his voice would suit day by day more but it is what it is and i think he did well just out shined

MIN KYU - I see improvement from my previous impressions of him and i can see him trying to sing louder as what the vocal trainers told him, only time will tell if he improves more.

3RD DAY BY DAY STAGE

This stage was nice. It was good. But it just did not really pop or leave a super lasting impression. I liked the arrangement into a rainy day style song. I liked the concept that they had. I liked their powerful vocals and harmonies. But it just didn’t stand out for some reason like I really can’t explain it. Its like the I am stage in produce 48 it was good but it just didnt pop.

CHOI SU HWAN - I’ll first declare i am biased towards him so don’t take me seriously but like i found it quite unbelievable that he got 5th place in the live voting because he was hitting those notes darn powerfully and his harmonising with yu bin was really nice and good so yes i like him and i hope he makes it through

SONG YU BIN - Same as woo seok he continues to show why he’s in the top ranks and that there’s a reason why he already debuted really nothing suprising

NAM DONG HYUN - I like his work ethic, he accepts criticism and works hard to get what he wants the arrangement that he did was pretty and his voice matched well with the song but didn’t really have much highlights during the performance apart from the high note with yubin

MOON JUN HO - I have no idea he existed until now but i loved his facial expressions and his voice aint bad but because of the lack of screentime he gets I really can’t talk much about him (im sorry)

KWON TAE EUN - Same as jun ho definitely does not get enough screen time considering the effort they probably poured into the stage

2ND TWIT STAGE

These 5 guys killed it, be it from the arrangement to their voices to their stage presence and performance everything conveyed their teamwork. Also i loved the outfits and the mic stands yes.

YOON JUNG HWAN - This guy’s stage presence is no joke where has he been all along? He knows what he’s doing that’s for sure and he is such a good pick as the center for this song, just watch the performance the way he moves its killer.

LEE HYEOB - WHERE HAS THIS GUY BEEN ALL THIS TIME TOO? When Bae Yoon Jung went “who is he?” i was like exactly I know right? This was a good song choice on his part and now i want him to go through as well maybe i just have a soft spot for independent trainees.

LEE EUN SANG - Clearly he ranked first based on popularity for this live stage but its not to say that he didn’t serve those killer looks, I could see him being a pretty good vocal but for this stage he stood out with the looks

KANG SEOK HWA - Another independent trainee that i have a soft spot for too, didn’t have many lines but was stable and did his job and also meshed well with the rest

LEE MI DAM - Damn if it weren’t for the comments I wouldn’t even be sure/ remember who arranged the song Mnet certainly could have given him some spotlight because i absolutely loved this arrangement into this sort of rock pop song

1ST ME AFTER YOU STAGE

Now this is a stage i’ve been replaying since it aired. This is up there in all the produce performances i’ve watched. These guys are made for ballads with their voices. Also i just love me a ballad and i do feel like this is the avengers team for the vocal position.

KIM YO HAN - He knows how to sing with emotion and when he does it feels like his heart is out on his sleeve, he may not have the biggest range (vocal wise) but he sure can deliver the feels

CHA JUN HO - I love the friendship between him and yo han but he definitely has to thank yo han for helping him but once that shell broke his vocals definitely shine through

KIM HYUN BIN - After the amazing performance with No More Dream i thought he was going to choose a rap position but no he chose a vocal position and he stuns. Similar to yo han he doesn’t exactly have the largest range but he does know how to sing.

HAN SEUNG WOO - He is good. He deserved the first and the center position, i feel like i’ve been saying this alot but he picked the right song he knows how his voice works and i respect him for that. But i wish someone would change his hairstyle.

WEI ZI YUE - He is trying, I can really tell he’s trying his voice is very unique and I’m not quite sure if he knows how to use it yet because the first time I watched the performance it felt a bit jarring because the rest of his team mates have those sort of clear voices but i could see he was trying to enunciate properly so thumbs up for trying.

RAP POSITION

2ND BARCODE STAGE

Before i watched the episode, I had hopes for a good stage because i love this song but after watching it i just wanted them not to cry. I think it was more upsetting because they made mistakes one by one and you could see them visibly getting less and less confident even though they were doing well. I feel sad because I could see the stage that this could have been with their different rap tones blending together and a very emotional lyrics.

WON HYUK - He was sort of evil edited but like he made up for it in his stage, he kept his calm and he kept his composure and i felt like because of that the team managed to finish the song. He was the only one that didn’t make a mistake and in fact i felt like he rapped harder because he wanted to make up for his team mates mistakes and he was good as a rapper which is surprising after his energetic performance.

BAEK JIN - He was really good and stable at the start which is why it was worse to see him fall, i think his nerves and his team’s mistakes really got to him and it broke him. His facial expressions were really good too.

YURI - His rap voice is so low and so different from his team mates that it made him stood out but imo i think from the start he already didn’t feel particularly confident, and it showed on his face and ultimately caused him to get flustered and make mistakes as well

LEE WOO JIN - I’m not sure about this but it felt like he was a vocalist? As in he felt new to rapping and the whole team vibe certainly didn’t help the situation if that was so. Tbh i think he needs more practice but he was really the most nervous even from the start but i wish him all the best

1ST SAY IT YES OR NO STAGE

MY FAVORITE STAGE OUT OF ALL THE STAGES!! This was just so fun. They were literally having fun on the stage and this was a stage where I absoulutely loved the killing parts and everyone had one! also all their lyrics are both fun, sad and powerful at the same time, i just love this team and want all of them to go through!

NAM DO HYUN - My pick since the start and I continue to love what he brings to the table, he actually took Cheetah’s advice seriously and he killed the stage especially the part where he says I’ll be your Oppa ji I was like wow that was good and on beat and on point

JO SEUNG YEON - He trained Jaehun and Seong yeon pretty darn well and he took care of his own part too and even though his own part was short it was IMPACTFUL like that line “naega” is too damn good, he’s both main vocal and main rapper and not a joke

JUNG JAE HUN - He’s trying hard too, I can see it but i loved how he just basically acted out his part about being nervous and the lyrics in his part are so honest that they’re kind of sad especially the part where he says “the only thing i’ve shown is my temple heart”

KIM SEONG YEON - Not sure if he wrote his rap or Seung Yeon did but it was nice and simple and effective and he had his own killing part at the “ pick pick pick” line. Kinda loved him as a rapper wanna see more of him as both vocalist and rapper.

You were fully awake by now and amidst your face massaging and grunts, you managed to call Taeyong’s number. Once the call got thru and he answered, you immediately bombarded him with questions before he even had the chance to speak.

               “What do you mean you’re on your way?! Why do you want to come over this early? Did something wrong happen? LEE TAEYONG, DID SOMETHING HAPPEN TO JISUNG?! ARE THE DREAMIES OK? WHERE ARE YOU?!”

               “Good morning to you too, I guess? And to answer your questions, nothing is wrong, Jisung is ok, the Dreamies are ok. Im sorry this was too sudden, I wanted to celebrate your birthday with you! And I meant just that, I was on my way. But Im already outside your house now,” you hear him laugh through the phone after he said that.

               You peer thru your bedroom window, and sure enough, there Taeyong was, in sweat pants and a black shirt, leaning back on his car with the phone still in his ears. “Hey, you. Good morning! Can I come in?” he asks through the phone while looking at you by the window. You gave him an incredulous look because he really was here! So suddenly and unexpected too, all because he wanted to celebrate your birthday with you? What a thoughtful dork.

              “No, you can’t. Bye Taeyong! Be careful on your way back,” you say as you made your way downstairs to welcome him inside. He was laughing harder now. He knew you were just joking and your footsteps were really loud, he could probably hear it through the phone. When you opened the door, he was already there holding a birthday cake on one hand and plastic bags filled with snacks on the other.

              You ended the call and tried your best attempt to plaster a deadpan serious expression on your face when you met his eyes. “Hey, don’t give me that look! I know you wouldn’t be asleep till three in the morning anyway. And besides, I brought cake for you! C’mon, let me give you a mini birthday party. Please?” he says with that full on pleading look on his face as he lifts his hands to show you all the stuff he brought. This boy really knows how to use his charm speaking abilities to the full potential. He knew you couldn’t resist him when he gives you that look.

               “Can I come in?” he asks again. You purposely counted ten seconds in your head before you answer him just to pretend that he can’t get you to say yes to him that easily. But he already knew what you were up to so he gave you a flick on the forehead while laughing at your attempt. You cleared your throat to hide your embarrassment, stepped aside to let him in, and locked the door once he was finally inside.

               “Alright birthday girl, leave the preparations to me. Just sit by the couch and I’ll call you when I’m done setting the table,” he orders and pushes you away from the dining room despite your protests. The boy was adamant though, you couldn’t tell him otherwise. And so, despite your feeble tries at resisting, he finally forced you to stay by the living room and listen to some songs on the radio.

               You watched him take out the snacks from the plastic bags from where you were sitting. He was walking back and forth from the table to the cupboards, probably looking for the utensils and plates. You were laughing at the sight of him getting flustered, mentally calculating how long it will take before he asks where they are. You payed him no mind, casually scrolling thru your feeds on social media when you noticed a pair of feet standing before you. Right where you wanted him, you internally laughed.

              He’s got this sheepish look on his face and you couldn’t hide the teasing smile starting to creep on your face. “You’re already done? That was fast!” you feigned shock and stood up from the couch to head to the table. “NO! WAIT! Im not yet done!” he says in a rush as he grabbed unto your shoulders to stop you from going any further.

               “I kinda rearranged the placement of the utensils, Taeyong. Just let me help! You’ll still give a mean mini birthday party even if you get some help from the birthday girl.” You can see that he wasn’t happy with what you were suggesting because he was starting to give you that pout.

               You flicked his forehead because of his stubbornness, then proceeded to make your way to the kitchen. He followed after you and the two of you worked hand in hand to finally set the table. Just as you were reaching to unbox the cake, Taeyong was already beside you in a heartbeat to stop you yet again.

              “NO, NO, NO, NO! NOT THE CAKE! Let me at least have the chance to do this right. The birthday cake is my duty,” he says as he holds the carton as far away from you as possible. You had that flustered look on your face at how fast he took it from you. One minute you were holding the carton, the other minute your hands were carton-less. He twirls his finger at your face, ordering you to turn around so he can prepare the cake.

              You just rolled your eyes at him, “Taeyong, what are you even? Why---“

              “Shhhhhhhh. Just turn around.”

              You did as you were told and a minute later you can hear Taeyong singing ‘Happy birthday to you’ as he circles around and brings the cake in front of you. You were taken aback when you saw the way he was smiling at you. You always knew he was gorgeous, but in this moment, his looks were magnified a thousand times more that you had to do a double take just to confirm to yourself that this boy was really real. You must’ve been openly staring because Taeyong cleared his throat to catch your attention again. You mentally cursed yourself. His good looks are too much to deal with this early in the morning.

              “Hey, are you ok?” he asks with a worried look on his face. You blinked rapidly to recollect yourself, cleared your throat with your eyes looking anywhere but him.

              “Yep. I’m good. Sorry. My thoughts are probably just flying everywhere cause it’s nearly 2AM,” you half lied. The other truthful half explains itself with the fact that you indeed get lost in your head during the wee hours of the morning. There’s just something about the quietness and coldness that makes you project your thoughts into space. But really, for this moment, it was 90% him and 10% the time’s fault.

              You blow the candles and prayed to God that you can make it through this event of his. Please.

              He finally puts the cake on the table and straps a birthday hat on you that shows Lightning McQueen’s face, and then one that shows Mater’s face on himself. He starts to laugh at your outfit, matching pajamas and a triangle paper hat on your head. He found joy in this because according to him, “This was not a sight he sees everyday!” Glad you can make him laugh then.

              After the teasing laughs, wrestling to get the birthday hat off, and forehead flicks, here you two were in the living room with full bellies listening to the radio. “I love this song!” Taeyong exclaims as Can’t Stop the Feeling continues to play. “You love every song that you can dance to, Tae. And you’ve been saying that to the past three songs already,” you matter-of-factly say to him. He gives you a cheeky grin and continued to rock his body to the beat.

              It’s probably been thirty minutes since the two of you started chilling in the living room and Taeyong was starting to move his limbs to dance at least more half decently than before. Where he got this energy this early in the morning, you never know. You were pretty beat so you just closed your eyes and tapped your feet to the beat in your seat across from him.

              The screeching sound of furniture being moved made you open your eyes and pull a ‘Taeyong, what are you doing this time?’ face at your guest. He laughs at you but makes no move to explain himself and just continued to move other pieces of furniture aside. You were too tired to argue with him and you knew he was going to put those all back later anyway so you just let him be. After he was finished with God knows what, he stood before you and asked you to dance with him.

               “HAHAHAHAHA! Look Tae, I know my heads out in space right now, but it’s not to that extent. You know I can’t dance to save my life!” you exasperated with matching arm movements. This was on another level of embarrassment. Catching you gawking was one thing, but dancing with him on purpose was another thing. You knew better than to dance with this dancing machine. You’ll look like a crippled bear dancing next to him.

              “Awe come on. Please? It’s just the two of us. And don’t worry about embarrassing yourself! That was just one time. Ten and Jae’s not even around this time so it’s good,” he pleads to you while doing the Macarena. You were not budging though and he was getting too immersed in the song so he stopped begging. For now.

              You two looked like this, him dancing to every song that played on the radio, and you just tapping your feet and nodding to him when he looked your direction in one of his dance moves every once in a while. You thought he finally gave up convincing you to dance, but when Long Flight played, he was in front of you again to do another pleading act. “Pleaseeeeeeeeee. We have to dance to this! It’s my song. You wouldn’t reject your buddy, right?” Oh God. You wanted to turn him down again, but he looked so hopeful and eager you just couldn’t bring yourself to do it one more time. And so, reluctantly, you stood up and did your best attempt at what you’d call a dance in a party move.

              “There you go! See? Isn’t this fun?” he asks happily while he dances with you. Kudos to him, he notched his dancing skill down when you agreed to dance to his song. And halfway through the song, you did realize that this was indeed fun. You guys weren’t really doing some Step It Up dancing, just moving your bodies to the beat and jumping around like crazed adults high on sugar.

              You didn’t imagine celebrating your 22nd birthday like this, dancing in the makeshift dancefloor in the living room with Taeyong, clad in your pajamas with the Cars birthday hat he bought still strapped on your head. It was just perfect how it seems that everything else was toned down and it was only the two of you allowed to be so vivid in this moment. Because it was only you and him dancing to My My My! at 3AM. Because it was only the two of you sharing this together. Yes, this was just perfect.

the way i read the books, skul starts to realise he’s in the process of falling for val when she’s 17-18. which is dodgy in some parts of the world, and idk where you’re from anon, but in my country the age of consent is 16 so i’m cool with interpreting it like that

the first instances of like, gentle flirting, from him are in death bringer and kotw. 

1. “You’re late.” 

“I’m beautiful.”

“You’re always beautiful.”

“I’m always late, too.”

skulduggery is from the 1600s, and flirting back then was not as obvious as it is today. this is roughly the time where he starts complimenting her regularly on her appearance. “you’re always beautiful” is a pretty safe compliment to give any girl, especially a girl like val who’s fairly vain and aware that she’s beautiful. i think here he’s kind of. testing the water? like not openly flirting with her, but more seeing whether she’s receptive to that kind of comment coming from him? whether he should bother to keep them coming? because if she’d responded here with an immediate awkward or disgust reaction, or if she’d kind of gone “that’s a little weird, skulduggery” i bet you none of the other semi-flirty stuff in the books would’ve gone down. he would’ve backed off, immediately

but she doesn’t. she just accepts it - we don’t get a physical reaction from her, but he keeps the compliments coming so there was probably some vaguely positive physical cue, i.e. she smiled at him or something, and says, “I’m always late, too.” The ‘too’ acknowledging that she knows she’s always beautiful. Thank you. Which let’s be real, is a response to half-flirty compliments that he’s probably used to from china. She’s not told him to fuck off, so that’s a positive.

And then he’s treated her to a gorgeous dress. 

2. “The dress was long and slinky, strapless, silk and chiffon. Her shoes were gorgeous”

I’m sorry, but if you see someone as a surrogate child, you don’t buy them a sexy dress. You just don’t, it’s inappropriate and wrong. And yeah, you might buy a dress like that for your platonic friend if you know that’s your friend’s style, but val isn’t a regular dress-wearer. so chances are, he bought her something he’d like to see her in, and hoped she’d like it. It’s not mentioned in the book, but it’s also possible he had to actually buy her underwear at this point. “Long, slinky, strapless” dresses usually require panties that don’t leave underwear lines, and strapless bras. Since val isn’t a regular wearer of slinky clothing or dresses, chances are she doesn’t actually own any suitable underwear for this dress. So either she went without, which would’ve been kind of uncomfortable for her during the whole nonsense with melancholia that went down at the requiem ball, or skulduggery bought her underwear to wear with the dress. 

how does he even know what size she is? either he asked ghastly, or he paid a lot of attention to that naked reflection. 

“I thought I’d spoil you,” he says. We know skulduggery spends a lot of money on the important woman in his life. China says he used to bring her priceless books and artifacts which would’ve cost him an arm and a leg, and it’s probably safe to say he bought her outfits, too, while they were together. He doesn’t seem to spend his money on people who don’t matter to him (as much). You don’t see him splashing out to get tanith a set of protective clothes, and he doesn’t so much as take elsie through the burger king drive-thru. Yet, I googled how much it costs to remodel a house and the answers I’m getting are all in like the £40,000 to £75,000 bracket, which might be out, but since I know nothing about house renovation, I’m gonna run with that. So he spent over £40,000 on doing up his house so val could essentially live there and spend more time with him. You don’t spend that kind of money on someone you’re not planning on having there long-term. 

He also implies that he would’ve gone to Ghastly to get val’s requiem ball dress if he hadn’t been so busy. ghastly’s clothes are implied to be expensive. it’s one thing for skul to buy val protective clothes - she’s his responsibility, and he wants to keep her safe, it’s an understandable expense. but splashing out just to buy her a fuckin expensive dress tailor-made by ghastly just to spoil her? dude got feelings

i mean let’s also take into account that that was what dudes did in ye olde days, right? they were the primary source of income. in 1600-whatever, the girl would’ve moved in with the guy, put her own touch on the home, and it would’ve been her husband’s responsibility to “keep” her; to pay for her clothes, her food, her entertainment, etc

What’s val done in the past few years?

“Moved into” skul’s house - not full-time, but it’s implied she spends a lot of time there, put her own touch on it via having it entirely fucking remodeled to suit her, what with having the bathroom, kitchen and bedroom put in, and spent a whole lot of skul’s money. he spoils her. in exchange, she makes his house into a home - probably just by being there, bc lets face it this is val and she’s no domestic goddess. but it mimics, i like to think, the way he would’ve treated his wife. money no object to make her happy

if you look at it like this, he’s basically treating her as though they’re in a relationship already. i doubt he’s actually taking that seriously and deluding himself that they’re a thing, but again, he’s testing it out. how does she react to him treating her like this? does she have issues with it? is she comfortable? and she’s totally chill with it, so another positive

There’s also this:

3. “Now she had her own bedroom, there was a bathroom with a huge shower and a kitchen with a fully-stocked fridge.”

So not only did he refurbish for her, but he refurbished with quality. Which, yeah, it’s skulduggery, he’s got expensive tastes, but tbh i think he let her pick out everything. which means she picked all this expensive shit that looks great but cost him a mint and he doesn’t care, bc this is how he shows affection

4. “sometimes she wondered how much money she’d cost him with her insistence on refurbishment”

So refurbishing was val’s idea. The fact that she wanted skul’s house changed for her probably came across as like. not flirty, exactly? but to him, she’s saying that she wants to spend more time here. more time with him. she wants his home to be her home. he probably saw that as encouragement, tbh, he was so happy about it? 

then in kotw, we have this:

5. “Remember that sorcerer who went missing?”

Valkyrie raised her head off the pillow even as she woke. For a moment she didn’t know where she was, then she recognised the house on Cemetery Road…

“Patrick Xebec,” Skulduggery said, standing in the morning sunlight that streamed in through the window.

he’s. in her room. while she’s asleep. at this point, they have no boundaries. skulduggery would’ve been raised that to come into a young lady’s room while she is abed is just. not done. the only woman it would’ve been appropriate for him to do that with would be his wife, or a lover - women he’d essentially share a room with anyway (don’t quote me on this, but i think a lot of couples in his era had separate bedrooms as standard? and then just slept together when they wanted to? because a lot of marriages were out of convenience and not love?). but im pretty sure there’s also another scene of him doing it again - coming into her room before she’s up and waking her up by talking at her - so either he’s just utterly lost his sense of propriety over the years or he’s so comfortable with her and she with him that they no longer have that boundary

6. “She took a quick shower, dressed, and Skulduggery had a bowl of cereal waiting for her when she emerged.”

so not only is he a-ok with coming into her room while she’s still in it, they’ve also got into a morning routine with each other. he makes her breakfast. it’s wonderfully domestic, a little gesture of affection in his very understated way. skulduggery is an over-the-top personality who doesn’t do emotions very well, and val has no subtlety. he’s treating her like he’d treat his significant other, but because he hasn’t actually smacked her in the face with a brick stamped with “I LIKE YOU” in big letters, she’s not picking up what he’s throwing out there

it’s also worth mentioning that like. in death bringer and kotw, he starts touching her a lot more. hugging her, or letting her hug him. that scene where he pushes her up against a wall and kinda feels her up to check if she was shot, even though she’s wearing protective clothes and so he knows none of the bullets would’ve hurt her. that bit in kotw(?) where she gets stuck in the hole and he has to pull her out. it’s pointed out on the skulduggery forums in the valdug thread that if you pull someone out by their underarms, like he tries to, you’re gonna touch boob. you just are. it’d be shockingly difficult not to. and again, no negative reaction from her, not even an awkward joke

again, for the most part of skul’s life, male-female physical contact was very limited. he didnt touch her very often for the first half of the series, and i think that had a lot to do with the fact that in his mind, it would’ve been inappropriate. touching is something you do with the girl you’re courting. so like, he’ll hug her if she needs to be hugged, or comfort her if she needs it or whatever, but there’s no casual touching. but in the last four books, he touches her an awful lot. because he is kinda courting her

kotw i think is the point where skul stops dodging around on the edge of flirting, and starts actually flirting. and tries to let her know he’s got feelings for her, because he’s a whole lot less subtle in this book. there’s this whole exchange: 

7. “It’s just, if you were feeling somehow…unattractive…”

“Sorry?”

“I don’t mean unattractive,” he said quickly. “I mean, if you were thinking that maybe you’ll always be alone -”

“You think I’ll always be alone?”

“That’s not what I meant.”

We know that when skulduggery was alive, he had a stutter. this isn’t a stutter, but he’s definitely nervous, and you can tell? i can count the number of times skulduggery was visibly nervous in the books on one hand. he’s a very confident, very self-assured man. but this is the first time he’s kind of made it obvious to val that he likes her. this is him kind of going, i’m an available romantic prospect, valkyrie. but she doesn’t let him get it out, she won’t let him finish. he phrases it wrong and loses his chance.

8. “I was only trying to be sensitive.”

she’s hurt him. she won’t let him talk, won’t let him tell her how he feels. she “doesn’t need him sensitive”. she’s kind of. pretty much completely dismissed that he’s also a person with feelings, and she’s hurt him.

9. “you can’t run from your feelings!”

“i can walk from them.”

he doesn’t deny that there are feelings to walk from. by now he’s picked up that valkyrie is dense as a fucking wall, so the flirting is getting a little bit more obvious. and even though she just hurt him, and he’s now kinda pissed at her as a result, he still acknowledges that he has feelings

and then, in lsodm, we get this absolute fucking gem

10 “tight trousers don’t count.”

he’s given up, everyone. this is outright flirting, it even sounds flirty on the audiobook, he knows he’s not fucking getting anywhere and now he’s just not even bothering to be subtle

and then, going totally outside of canon, i like to think that the Big Reveal is essentially skulduggery says something even more obvious than the tight trousers comment, and val kind of pauses and goes, “are you flirting with me?” and skulduggery is just like

ABSOLUTELY LETS DO THIS

gonna put this under a readmore because...woowee did i have a lot to say

note: the main characters and any characters who’s ages are close to theirs are roughly college-age

Lets start off with Ashe cause shes the one that this entire au revolves around dsfjkdsfd

so Ashe was born within this small cult-like religious community in County Meath, Ireland. She’s half Chinese on her mother’s side, though her mother isn’t apart of her life

(i’m undecided if Ashe’s mom is Dead or if she’s across seas trying to act as a peace-keeper in places of war and writes the occasional letter to Ashe; either way, her mom isn’t around and Ashe taught herself Chinese thru her mom’s old belongings and journals)

anyways Ashe grew up Hating her community and Especially her dad and she managed to run away to America in her teen years, with the help of of her cousin on her moms side of the family (or uncle, im not 100 percent sure yet), Xin (he still calls her Sister all the time)

it was hard for Ashe to integrate herself into this sudden new world, especially because English is like... her third language (used to have an irish accent but she worked HARD to hide it, it only comes out if shes Incredibly Drunk). though she can speak English pretty fluently now, she’s still illiterate when it comes to writing, and has a hard time picking up on metaphors and what have you (shes autistic my dudes)

As of current day, she lives in her cousin Xin’s loft, along with his roommate Horavon, who Ashe considers family more than she does Xin. She lives there on the condition that she works as a waitress at Xin’s own nature and floral themed cafe (she has to wear these cutesy outfits and she hates it, she gets along with her coworkers the ban tho)

Also important info on Ashe: she a trans girl, and no one in her hometown ever respected that, so she’s got some self image issues regarding that. She’s also got albinism (yea the white hair is natural here) so she has really shitty eyesight that she has contacts for tho she does own glasses, and thinking abt her wearing them makes me gay. She’s also really sensitive to the sun, which is a problem since she’s super outdoorsy, but she knows how to be careful abt it

but yeah thats kinda Ashe’s deal

and next up is GREGAR my sweet boy... ok so Gregar originally lived on a farm with his family, but when a tragic and traumatizing incident happened involving bears, he was taken in by a group of people who.... also died tragically

Anyways after that Gregar lived in a foster home full of a bunch of other foster kids, including but not limited to Firi(she has a prosthetic leg), Dont, and Charoth (gregar hates this fucking kid with all of his hate; Ashe meanwhile adores him and lowkey wants to adopt him when she’s able to)

Gregar is the youngest of between the three main characters, just barely an adult. After he grew too old for his foster home, he became roommates with Markus and Kyr (Ashe is their unofficial fourth roommate; she’s always at their place, and they really want her to move in with them, but she’s waiting until she can find a better job). He’s going to community college, mostly knocking his credentials out of the way, and is still figuring out what he wants to do with himself (all he knows is that he wants to stop bad people and bad things from happening, but he’s not really sure what that means yet)

then theres MARKUS my beautiful boy. he pretty much grew up in a poor household with just his dad, nothing too fancy abt his backstory. As soon as he turned 18, he left home and pursued an acting career (as well as occasionally writing a book or two; mostly romance novels). Though community theater, he met Kyr, a tech stagehand, and the two hit it off IMMEDIATELY, soon moving in together. Markus is struggling to become more well known as a professional actor, but hes also pretty comfortable where he is

Inien and Colvin, both coming from pretty wealthy families, grew up together going to super prestigious schools. They both go to a fancy college in the area, though neither of them really have a desire to be as Fancy and whatnot as their families 

Thog is... pretty much a mystery (to me at least im not really sure what his whole deal is yet)??? Like no one knows abt his family or his history all they know is that he lives alone in his tiny studio apartment and he works a miserable job and hes probably been thru some shit?? He’s definitely been through some shit. Please protect him (he acts like hes super against hanging out with the main squad, but, lets b real, he loves them to bits)

I’m still unsure abt Zalvetta??? He has some sort of connection to Xin (he’s always trying to sabotage his cafe, Ashe has to chase him out with a broom) and the only reason that hes apart of this massive friendgroup is because Gregar really likes him (and Zalvetta likes Gregar back)
