The Little Alien is an allegory for Evolution. It shows survival of the fittest by means of a little alien who just can't seem to get love right. The focus of this animation is the experimental use of scanned imagery, created by my classmates and myself.

Critical Mass
For this project I had to create a motion piece explaining some scientific topic using images that I scanned myself. I created various textures using different types of fabric I had on hand. I decided to make my video educational. I chose a topic that has always fascinated me, psychology. I focused in on the Freudian concept of the Id, the Ego, and the Superego. I then likened the mind to an iceberg and used that simile to explain the levels of consciousness.

Material Studies
My final typeface was made up of buttons and glue sticks. I took an nontraditional approach using glue where the glue sticks were what made up the typeface and the buttons were used as the form's base rather than the glue primarily being used to hold the typeface together. My typeface was used to create a fictional PSA for a local Art Academy advertising their summer camp programs. The top video shows my final PSA where all type is made up of glue sticks for the exception of the date. The bottom slideshow previews the process of forming different letters with my typeface. Though working with certain letter forms and materials is difficult, it was an interesting challenge trying to figure out how I would make a form stand and stay put without loosing its true shape. Lastly, I chose to do a PSA for an art academy because the materials used were good representations of school, education, art and the youth.

I believe that this assignment trained my eye to find elements of design in everything. It also taught me how to relate those elements of design to one another in order to create a relationship from one element to another. It really makes aesthetic qualities of elements relatable and easier to grasp.

Image Methodology- Scales 1
We were to make a composition "of or endowed with the sense of touch". My prompt was "What is Eternity?" Click each photo for the large format.
What is eternity? I explored this concept through photography for my first scales exercise. Each photograph plays with the idea of the sense of touch enabling an individual moment of anticipation in a child's life to be remembered for an eternity.

Scales - Constructivism
Each of these four images was made to answer a specific question using graphics in the constructivism style.
1. What inspires you? The mountains
2. What does your room look like? Trash
3. What do you do on a date? Run like hell
4. Do you believe in premarital sex? Absolutely

This Image Methodology project was the first time I used After Effects. I used scans, pictures and Illustrator drawings to make up my video. I had fun exploring a new program. For this project we were given a word and we needed to find another representation for it, In my case was earthquake. I decided to represent earthquake as a moment of tension and movement, with a deeper meaning showing afterwards there is a calm from it being over and positive attitude on making things better.

This video was for Image Methodology, where we had to pick a scientific process and depict it in a video. I chose to do decomposition, and represented it with a lego tower that was being picked apart and taken down by various members of a family.

Critical Mass
The objective of this project that I worked on in Image Methodology was to create a short animated piece that illustrated an allegory of an assigned topic relating to natural processes using Adobe AfterEffects. The piece was to incorporate different elements such as scanned in images, photography, and vector images. For the allegory, each person in the class chose a word that was assigned, such as mitosis, earthquake, or decomposition. We then had to research this word and come up with a story that was an allegory for this natural process. The allegory story we came up with was what was supposed to be animated.
I chose decomposition for my natural process and my story was about a school bully. Decomposition is the process of breaking down then recycling nutrients back into the ecosystem, thus my allegory was about a school bully who metaphorically broke down the school nerd until he couldn't take it anymore and decided to do everyone a favor and warn them about how mean the school bully is. In the end of the story, the school bully ends up breaking down himself. This is also an allegory for the decomposers who also endure decomposition as well.
For my animation I decided to use scanned in images in the background, and my own vector animated images for the characters in the foreground. I thought that the scanned images would make the characters pop out more. In the animation itself I showed the 5 steps of decomposition through different days/events and character expressions.
It was my first time using AfterEffects and anything like it so I found it very difficult to master. Getting the timing just right and the character's motions exactly how I envisioned proved very challenging. However, I learned a lot about the program and I hope to improve my animation skills in the future.

Lookin Sharp Process Book
Not wanting to undercut (ha!) the typeface with too much decoration, I made a  simple book to show the construction of the final Lookin' Sharp composition.

This poster above, and the process book below, were a part of our "Material Studies," a look at trying to make typography out of found objects. The parameters were that we couldn't use anything too "easy," like ribbon or pebbles. I chose X-Acto blades, and was pretty happy with the result.
I do wish that the camera I used had been of a higher quality — I didn't realize the resolution was so low until I went to print it. I liked my image, but the resolution just didn't turn out very well.

These were the final exercises for Image Methodology, in which we had to mimic pop art. This was my favorite exercise because I love Andy Warhol and I really tried to make each of my compositions reflect something that he had done before. I think that they challenged me to actually create a composition that not only was interesting to look at, but that also looked cohesive.
