i’m not going on anon because i’m happy to elaborate if people send me follow-up asks on main bc i need the masses to see this: it’s a long one!

the sonic fandom is EXTREMELY misogynistic, and the second i point that out there is a swarm of people who want to come forward and prove they’re not. i’m not accusing everyone of being an irredeemable asshole who actively hates women, but there is an intrinstic, baked-in misconception about the female characters that i find a lot of people have accidentally adopted without noticing.

for starters, think about how content is MADE of female characters. are they just standing there? are they an accessory to the male character who is featured in the post? if you were to describe her to someone, would you use the terms “girlboss”, “mom friend”, “the one with the braincell”, or “be gay do crime” as a summary?

think of the female characters you know, and the media you like/dislike. are you a big idw fan because whispangle is soooo cute, but hate archie because *incoherant mumbling* kenders sally acorn fiona fox hot = bad? movie amy is great, but the only stc character that matters is tekno because tekamy is soooo cute? are we going to downtalk characters from older series’ without interacting with them critically, all while blindly accepting every glimpse of a woman in new media regardless of how well she has been written?

if you are depicting a queer woman, are the sapphic female characters just standing next to each other, maybe making eye contact? is the more masculine one (read this loosely as: wears pants, most sonic characters are extremely femme unless you mean like. thunderbolt or something lol) given she/they pronouns, whereas the more feminine one is bisexual and given more outfit redesigns?

look closer again, and hold my hand. do you “ship” the women because they look pretty together? what about their character arcs, foils, contrasting lifestyles, etc… how does this affect their dynamic?

are we writing thousand word posts with frame-by-frame analysis of a female character’s growth, or is that merely reserved for the uwu gay babies aka literally any male character?

let’s circle back to queer women. are your trans women headcanons equivalent in number to the trans men? do your non binary headcanons skew afab transmasc? when you depict a trans female character, is she either hyperfeminine or androgynous, with little development into her identity?

okay, i’ll take a step back and really slow down. when you look at your blog, go on, take a look at it, how much of it is about the sonic women in proportion to your favourite yaoi ship? are you shipping blazamy and wavouge as an accessory to sonadow/espilver/sonjet so that all the women are paired off with each other? do you target characters like amy or rouge because of their romantically implied connections to a male character you write as gay?

finally, when a female character is written about, what does she do? is she giving advice to a male character, taking care of them, or being responsible for those around her? do we talk about her story? her interests? the things she does for herself, outside of romance or her male teammates?

okay, deeply breathe out with me. if you see yourself in this picture, and your kneejerk reaction is to try and justify why you act this way, please… don’t. you are not a hateful person, and there’s a good chance you don’t mean to neglect our sonic women. i’m not here to fight every person on the internet who has, unbeknownst to themself, treated the female characters like shit.

there is a deep, DEEP bias against female sonic characters, and just because we’ve traded oversexualized love triangles for #girlboss mom friends, it doesn’t make it LESS misogynistic. you just changed the font.

my confession is that as a long time fan who has seen many generations of the sonic fandom, i think the misogyny of today is worse than it was in the 2000’s. it’s just in a subtler, crueler way. to put it simply, it’s easy to bash someone who essentially spells out that they hate women than someone who subconsciously does misogynistic things, is noseblind to it, and then gets defensive/denies it because it’s baked in and not offensive at a first glance.

I do not want to see reverse sonamy at all.

as much as I understand that movie sonic is a different version with different characterization. The sonic franchise has never, ever, been about romance. Sonic as a character, does not express a lot of desire to it either. There are a few scenes and implications he's in love with amy, but generally, it has never been a main thing. And in the franchise it's one of the most background things ever, the most "implied" ship is whispangle. Sonic is a genuinely just a guy who loves adventure and stands against oppression, romance is very rarely shown to be desired. And settling down is extremely out of character for sonic. Sure, I won't deny he can't have any romantic feelings, but till date he never outwardly expresses any desire for it, aside from implications and VERY recent (IDW and frontiers) media. (obv the media being recent or old wouldn't change much, but it shows it's a relatively more new thing, easing into it.) Movie sonic is already a VERY different guy from game sonic, game sonic isn't a pop culture referencing hyperactive kid who wants a family. And I genuinely love movie Sonic, but making him down bad and a mushy gushy romantic would only further alienate him from game sonic. this isn't to say he cant have a crush on amy at ALL (though i really would prefer ships to stay in the fandom..) but to make him a total simp is quite odd.

What sort of ships are allowed?

As the name implies, anything that falls under Femslash/wlw! Polyships, OC x canon, and ships between transfem characters are allowed, but not just genderbends of canon male characters.

What sort of content is allowed?

I’d suggest fanart, fanfic, poetry, analysis posts, cosplay, playlists… (Some of these are more tailored to Tumblr, where the event is also taking place) But pretty much any kind of non-AI-generated content is great! And this is an SFW event, so please no NSFW for any of these.

Are side non-F/F ships (E.G. M/M or M/F) allowed?

Yes, that’s totally fine! For example, if you wrote a piece on Whispangle, with background Sonamy, that would be fine as long as the Whispangle is still the main content! Background ships in general are absolutely allowed and encouraged.

Do we have to do both prompts for each day? Do we have to use the prompts?

If you’re using the prompts, the one of them! If you want to do both, then that’s great, but it’s not necessary. And the prompts are heavily encouraged, but are mostly there to give people ideas. If your idea fits none of them, make it anyway!

Do I need to sign up?

Nope! This collection will be open from the 2nd of June, and will stay open likely indefinitely after that, and anyone will be able to add to it! Over on Tumblr, anyone is able to post and to tag the @sonicfemslashweek blog as well as use the #sonicfemslashweek25, where I will reblog any submissions that fit the guidelines.

Is it okay to post outside of the main dates?

Yep! As I have said, I will be accepting late submissions! I plan to leave the AO3 collection open indefinitely once I open it for the week, and if you @ this blog to share your work, I will certainly still reblog it. (And I am likely to still check the tag too, but I won't promise too much there)

I think I had my official "Please stop." moment with the endless stupid debates over why Sonic doesn't just kill Eggman when it was suggested that Sonic sealing Erazor Djinn away was too harsh, or that it was some kind of proof that he didn't respect other people's freedom or something, as if it's the same case as Chaos. Poor cosmic swole bitter genie, who called his implied girlfriend a dumb weak hoe when he accidentally killed her, just wanted to be free even after he had already served his sentence. Why can't Sonic respect his freedom to come into his world and stir shit?

Slightly related, but I want to propose again the IDW FAQ @woodchipp and I wrote back then, which ofc tackles the whole dilemma of Sonic dispatching his enemies. We haven't updated it in ages, but then again, aside from the Whispangle drama nothing major has happened

Amy’s eyes widened. “How–?”

He pointed at Rouge. “I am most optimal when I’m running on Chaos energy,” he said. “Now farewell.” 

Something rumbled through the station, the sound almost deafening, and then a familiar screech tore through the air. Amy’s blood ran cold, and she turned to Knuckles. “We have to find the others!” she said, her voice frantic.

But the way she looked at Hermes, the warmth and devotion in her gaze… It made his stomach turn, a cold fire burning in his chest. 

Hades cleared his throat, and Hermes looked up at him with a smirk. “‘Sup, Hades?” he said. “I was just checkin’ in on Kore.”

Kore’s eyes shifted to Hades, and yet her smile didn’t change. If anything she brightened even further, and the flames in his chest banked a little. Still, Hades turned his gaze to Hermes, narrowing his eyes. “I see,” he said. “I don’t remember giving you permission to enter my abode while I was out.”

Sonic was about to try to follow him when someone called his name behind him. He turned to find a tired beaver with a pair of glasses and a clipboard standing in the doorway. “Your friend is stable,” she said, almost as if she could hardly believe it. “He’s still unconscious but he looks like he’ll pull through.”

Sonic sighed, his shoulders finally relaxing. “Phew,” he said. “For a minute there I thought he was a goner.”

“So did we,” the doctor replied with a frown.

Shadow bit back a laugh as Sonic’s smirk melted into a mildly annoyed expression. “The universe has ordained that I’m the coolest. Although you’re a close second.”

“Gee, thanks,” Shadow deadpanned. “High praise. Now get out.”

The actual Diamond Cutters still exist, Mimic just isn’t an asshole and also they aren’t the same team they are in canon?? like they don’t do the same stuff they do in canon, so no taking over eggman bases and stuff. they’re just chillin man. still workshopping a whole story 👍

I've read all of the other responses from the other anons, and looking back at my own ask, I never meant it to be in a way that's rude or in a way that's to accuse. The reason why I even sent that in the first place was because sometimes this fandom has some people that makes ships with little representation completely hetero and finding the excuse of saying that they don't have canon sexualities and such.

I love it when people put their own hcs on characters, I love it when people ship characters outside of canon, I really do!

I know I'm "beefing over this" and I know I should've blocked and moved on, that's why I'm apologizing, because I never wanted my ask to seem to be against anything or anyone. Everyone is allowed to ship whatever if it makes them happy, no one has to follow canon, I guess it just bothered me that if said thing is implied there's gonna be some people to completely ignore that. I'm sorry for anyone that felt hurt or accused by my ask.
