hello dear readers and welcome back to canarysage, the world’s least comprehensive tutorial blog. today, we’re back at it again with photopea for dummies, and we’re tackling something i probably should have done first: psds.

what is a psd?

excellent question, dear reader! psd stands for photoshop document, and it’s a type of file format (like .png or .gif) that allows you to store a project’s individual layers! it’s a file format that, for obvious reasons, is exclusive to photoshop and photopea.

in editing circles, psd has become shorthand for filter. people use psds to save configurations of adjustment layers that are then used to filter images consistently, without having to remake them every time. when someone posts a psd, they’re posting a folder (hopefully it’s in a folder) with their specific set of adjustment layers for anyone to use!

where can i get psds?

right here on tumblr! check your favorite edit blogs, as they may have posted some, or search ‘free psd’ or ‘psd coloring’ in the search function. tumblr doesn’t allow you to upload psds directly, so you’ll be redirected to a site outside tumblr. probably either deviantart, google drive, or ko-fi, all of which are easy to use. deviantart requires you to have an account to download anything (luckily, an account is free!) and ko-fi may require you to pay money. google drive doesn’t have a search function in and of itself, but it’s extremely easy to download off of.

also, shameless self plug, but i post psds right here on canarysage! i personally use deviantart, but again, an account is free. if send me an ask, i may be able to provide you with a google drive link, if you ask really nicely (｡•̀ᴗ-)✧

and of course if you don’t want to use someone else’s psd, you can always make your own.

how do i use a psd?

once you have a psd of your choice downloaded, open up photopea! or photoshop, if you’re rich like that.

once you open photopea, click this here button right in the middle of the screen, the one that says “open from computer”

from there, go to choose files and open up your psd! depending on from whom you got it, psds will look different once you open them. i’m using one of my own as an example.

you can see there’s two layers in my psd, a folder, and an image. the image is just for me so i know which psd this is once i save it—i like to save all my psds with images of real people so i know how it looks on moodboards or stimboards.

the folder is the important part here, that’s where the adjustment layers are contained. to transfer a psd, you can either go to file > new

which lets you start an entirely new project, or you can open an image using file > open

which will give you the image you selected.

as an aside, if you’re opening a psd and you already have a project in progress, make sure to click file > open and not file > open & place, as open & place won’t give you the adjustment layers.

then to move the folder, go to layer > duplicate layer into while having selected the folder (just tap on it, that will make it a lighter gray to show it’s selected) and duplicate the folder into whatever your image is

i’m moving mine to a random image of honami i found which is why it’s named like that. once the folder’s duplicated into your project, go over and take a look!

you should now see something like this! ensure that the folder is on top, as otherwise the adjustment layers won’t work.

here’s the difference between the unfiltered image and the image with my psd!

to save images in photopea (like i did just now) go to file > export as > (your preferred file format)

which will pull up something like this

i recommend either saving as a png (for still images) or as a gif (for… gifs) but that’s up to you! in order to save a psd, go to file > save as psd! that will save your project to your device

bear in mind that tumblr doesn’t accept psds as a file format, so if you’re going to post an edit, you have to save it as something else. also, don’t just save other people’s psds and claim them as your own—psds take a lot of time, effort, and skill, like any other art form.

can i make my own psds?

100% yes! i can’t give you a step-by-step process unfortunately, as there really is no one way to make psds. i recommend familiarizing yourself with adjustment layer and seeing what works.

basically, i like to think of adjustment layers as a few different categories. light/darkness adjustments (ie: brightness/contrast, levels, curves, exposure, black & white, and threshold to a certain extent.) saturation adjustments (vibrance, hue/saturation.) color adjustments (hue/saturation, color balance, photo filter, channel mixer, selective color, gradient map depending on how you use it, and replace color.) and also, miscellaneous (posterize, which gives your images a pop-art crunchy kind of effect, invert, which… inverts your colors, and color lookup, which is a set of filters unto itself)

how you utilize adjustment layers is up to you! i personally like to use a variety and see what happens, my personal favorites being channel mixer, photo filter, and hue/saturation. you can also utilize blending modes (shameless self plug again,) or opacity.

if you have no idea where to start, you can look at other people’s psds to see their process. don’t copy or steal, for obvious reasons, but you can toggle layers on and off and see what happens and what each layer does.

making psds isn’t as intimidating as it sounds, you just have to start a project and start creating! it gets really fun once you get the hang of it (*'▽'*)

i don’t edit with photoshop or photopea, can i still use psds?

short answer: nope!

long answer: if you want use psds but you’re super used to ibis paint or whatever you currently use, have no fear! you don’t have to switch all your editing to photopea. you can make your main project in ibis or whatever as normal, then upload it to photopea and add a psd.

you can also make perfectly fine filters in ibis paint in your own right, with enough tweaking. there’s also apps such as polarr and picsart which come with filters, but i’ve never used them so i’m unable to vouch for how they work.

do i need to use psds when editing?

nope! psds are 100% optional. they’re a style like anything else—some people prefer them and some people don’t. it’s up to you.

did you genuinely write 1178 words answering questions no one asked?

Hi! I love your mods, specifically your more complex recipes mod, but since it is incompatible with cinderellimouse’s cooking and ingredients overhaul mod, I have been playing without that mod, is there any way to make them compatible?

Hi, and thank you! To see what differences there are between mods that modify the same XML or ITUN resource, I like to export those resources, open them both in Notepad++, and use its Plugins \ Compare \ Compare feature.

In the image below, I've extracted the RecipeMasterList XML from both mods, renamed them "[SD]" and "[CM]" to tell them apart more easily, and from that point it's just a matter of seeing what differences there are between the two documents, and changing what you want — of course, bearing in mind what other modifications CM introduces, like new ingredients (I've never used that mod). Additions are listed in green, changes are listed in yellow.

Of course, it is preferable to apply any modifications to CM's mod and discard mine, since I assume you want the additional stuff that comes with CM's mod.

After you're done, save the .xml and import it over the one in CM's mod (where you previously extracted it from). Make sure to right-click the XML (instance 0xC804E72F531C6AAD) and use the Replace function, since S3PE won't import it otherwise because of the name change.

Hello! Could you, please, make a tutorial how to make recolours of your hat-hair cc?

Of course! Start with unmerging the package (if it contains more than one age version).

To recolor the HAT part:

Place the adult version in your Sims4Studio folder (usually in /Documents) Close and open Sims4Studio so it loads the new file.

Clone as usual.

Recolor the Hat Part, dont touch the hair part of the swatch (I normally let them be grey so you see that it is not getting the color from those swatches.

Import as usual.

If you want the recolors to also be used for children and toddlers - clone THE ADULT HAIR again, retag for kids (toddlers) and import the mesh from the original package (which you of course need to export first.)

If you want to recolor the HAIR part, place the file with the hair colors in the Sims 4 Studio folder, and clone it. Export, and you shall have 24 EA colors. Recolor, or add colors if that is what you want to do. Import. CHECK that the OUTFIT TYPE (the first drop down menu in S4S) is Hair Color Overlay, NOT hair.

(Swedish version above, long nice Swedish word to know ;) ) Save. NOW: open the Hat Hair file in CASTools.

Go to Hair Color Manager and import the new colors into the package. Commit, save. Done. :)

Noeu is looking at Seoltang who is making Coffee. As Seoltang’s Aide, he has something to report but for now….Why is Seoltang suddenly decided to make over 20 cup of coffees in the span of 50 minutes in the middle of a war???

Noeu tightly hug Seoltang, then kneel down in front of him.

Noeu: “Sir, I can have surgeon colonel verify for you that it’s impossible to die from coffee overdose. Do rethink your decision and stay with me”

Seoltang: “Aide what- That’s not what I’m trying to-“

Noeu: “I know people say weird things about you ever since you forgot to zip your pants on national television but you have to brave through it”

Seoltang’s smile crooked a bit, he almost managed to forget about that event. He makes a square shape hand signal with his thumbs and his index fingers then draw a smile on the air with his left index finger, this had Noeu immediately stood up in response.

Seoltang: “Thank you for your kind concern but I would prefer if you addressed your report to me first”

Noeu is still worry but decided to go along.

Noeu: “Very well sir, my report today concern the minute of Area 21 meeting with the intelligence bareau”

Noeu tapped on his laptop to deactivated the power saving mode, showing a presentation slide.

Noeu: “Since you have no social media account, which is a very wise choice considering your work practice. Everyone will definitely wait to celebrate your death. Regardless, allow me to fill you in”

Noeu: “This morning the other generals received an overwhelming amount of online death threats due to the fake leak of North Capital’s documents relating to the recently emerged war between nation A and nation B”

Noeu changed the slide.

Noeu: “The publisher of these fake documents claimed that Northland had been stealing ship from nation A to pirated the cargo ships from nation B, oddly alighted with a statement from one of nation A navy who claim to be a survivor from the piracy before he’s found death in his residence”

Noeu: “The online account that published these fake documents had completely vanished, we concluded that these documents are very specific kind only 3 stars generals and up would knows how to utilized as it is a document designed specifically to be submitted through enclaves in Northland-Bay Hill CENTRIX but none of these documents are found in our or Bay Hill’s system”

Noeu: “Nation B is one of our important imports and exports business partners for many type of essential goods when it’s come to waterway shipments. Our main export is aircraft part which we produce by importing titanium alloyed from nation B. So the defense forces, specifically North Capital are blamed by the civilian for the current Northland’s economic failure”

Noeu: “The other generals had sent their troops to gather more information from the war-side which should rendered the actual instigator motionless for the time being but it does not change the fact that both nation are wary of us and will not cooperate with any troops let alone allow any Northland soldiers on their land”

Noeu: “Clearly this is an attempt to stir riot by an espionage agent who are already deep inside the defense service of our country. The intelligence bureau also report that the results from OSINT and DIGINT alluded to the same directions and so they seek insight from you concerning-”

Noeu stop once he heard a clicked sound, Seoltang is taking photo of the 25 cup of coffees he made.

Noeu: “Sir, are you listening?”

Seoltang: “My apologies Aide, I have to get my profile up in timely fashion so I can put this in the resume I will use to apply for a job at Starducks. I have a good reason to personally investigate there”

Noeu went quiet for moments.

Seoltang is the designer of Northland espionage network and CENTRIX shared between Northland and the other nations, of course his lead is ahead of every other generals when it’s come to intelligence and information. Starducks must have something to do with the-

Seoltang: “You see Aide, last time I attended the conference at North capital. The executives asked me the numeric difference between the IBU of the coffee served in the meeting room and each type of coffee served in Starducks. But I don’t even know what IBU stand for so they tickled me with duck feathers as a warning. They said if I don’t have everything figured next time they will tickle me with heated needles and filmed the entire process”

What in the horizon are they doing at North Capital?? Do they have that much free time??? Noeu thought to himself, now he feels bad for the civilians knowing how their taxes are spent.

Suddenly, Seoltang phone’s buzzed.

Seoltang: “Perfect, I just got a like from an online coffee reviewer”

Noeu: “Hold on sir….you HAVE a social media account? Your existence is supposed to be SECRET! There’s a file about your identity in the B3 here in THIS BASE!“

Seoltang’s ears goes down a little after being scolded.

Seoltang: “I have multiple accounts depending on the industry but I’ve never disclosed anything about myself-”

Noeu: “You literally just published a photo taken inside a highly classified remotely detached facility!!”

Noeu took the phone from Seoltang and started reading some of his posts. It appeared that he did do some activities that supported the hate toward the North Capital officers, a very odd move especially for an account that is supposed to be for things like applying a job.

Then it all clicked.

Noeu: “Wait-did you conjured these online hate because you are bitter that the other generals tickled you with duck feathers over a stupid coffee question?”

Seoltang let out a soft laugh.

Seoltang: “Not quite, I personally don’t care about taking petty revenge on these generals but I care about your safety”

Seoltang: “Conflict can be use in many way from weakening people for threat migration to separating the human resources into group for more manageable organizational systems but surely you are a lot more well versed in this topic than me”

Seoltang approached Noeu and adjust Noeu’s hat.

Seoltang: “Since instigating conflicts is your specialty not mine, right Aide? May be you should rest more, it was careless of you to leave a survivor”

Noeu’s eyes twitched, now finally pieced together what had actually been going on. It’s the reason Seoltang didn’t attend the meeting between Area 21 and the intelligence bureau.

Seoltang: “You’re welcome Noeu”

In response Noeu laugh out loud.

DC COMICS VERSE. ― SUMMARY. Thomas Michael Shelby is a cutthroat politician, Founder & CEO of a successful import/export company known as Shelby Company International, & the leader of a well-known gang called the Peaky Blinders: a vicious, razor-wielding group of extremely loyal members that own and run the Coventry Dock in Gotham, controlling all of the ports associated with it as well as the import & export of illegal goods & the flow of money in & out of the city. They have politicians, police, & doctors in their pockets. There is not a single soul within a ten-mile radius of Coventry Dock that doesn't recognize the name Shelby.

Terrifying rumors circulate through the city about how the Blinders are led by a dead man who sold his soul & was resurrected in exchange for the power & intelligence required to take down the heroes of Gotham City ― especially Batman.

TW: suicide, torture, medical abuse, marginalization, mental illness.

DC COMICS VERSE. ― FULL. THOMAS SHELBY IS DEAD. That is what all of the official documents say. According to city records, Tommy Shelby, having been awarded a full-ride scholarship to Gotham City University ( GCU ), began attending school at 18. His grades were stellar & despite his social class & lower economic status, he proved himself to be as worthy of an Ivy League degree as even the richest of students. During his Junior year he met and fell in love with someone, but the relationship did not work out, & Tommy found himself in a severe depressive state. After several unsuccessful attempts by his counselor to offer him treatment solutions, he was sent to the nearby Arkham Asylum for a 72-hour suicide watch.

He'd been released from Arkham following this 72-hour hold, having been declared to no longer be a danger to himself or others. According to official records, Thomas Shelby proceeded to walk out of the front doors of the psychiatric hospital & promptly jump in front of a bus & end his own life at the tender age of 21. According to the coroner, the body was far too mutilated for an "open casket" funeral, & they cremated it, not taking into account the fact that Tommy & his family do not practice Christian burials  ―  they burn their dead.

The Shelby family burns a wagon with an empty bed inside; a wagon filled with Tommy's possessions & memories. They mourn him. They let him go. They get over it.

Meanwhile, Tommy spends almost two years rotting away in the underbelly of Arkham Asylum ― experimented on, manipulated, murdered. The boy that had gone in for a mental health crisis had never come back out again. At the time that Thomas was attending GCU, Arkham Asylum was in the habit of testing new psychiatric medications on otherwise healthy individuals in order to document their side effects.

Of course, testing on people is illegal. They only tested on lab mice, rats, a select number of orangutans &, undocumented human patients that they assumed would not be missed.

Some of the trial medications did nothing. Some of them caused horrible physical symptoms like liver and kidney damage. The worst ones, though, were the ones that made him hallucinate wildly; the ones that put him at the mercy of his own brain & made him stop trusting his own senses. Things he heard or saw or felt or smelled had an equal chance of being fake as they did of being real.    

Most of it is nothing but a vague, hazy memory. He remembers pain. He remembers fear. He remembers the names & faces of the doctors & nurses in whose charge he stayed. The thing he remembers most, though, is the other patients. The way they all prayed for the Batman to come save them, the shrines they erected in honor of their blessed heroes. & he remembers that those heroes never came. They existed merely to give false hope to the needy, & to bring those they deemed insane here, to be fed upon by the parasitic social structure. This observation planted a seed in his soul, which he diligently watered & nursed into full-blown hatred.

It didn't take long for Tommy to gain enough trust of an insecure doctor to pick their pocket & take their keycard. It took him a little longer to start learning the layout of the building; he'd leave for a few minutes each night, going a little farther each time, returning to his cell to mark the locations of guards & cameras & exits. He had no intention of breaking himself out; he just needed to find an office with a phone that dialed the outside world, then find someone who knew the passcode to do so. Altogether the process took a little over a year.

Once he'd contacted his family & relayed the plan to them, however, Tommy only had to wait for thirteen more days before a pipe bomb freed him & a number of other patients housed near him.

Upon his release, Thomas Shelby built quite the name for himself. With patience, skill, & strategy, he was able to take over the Coventry dock & all of its ports; the Peaky Blinders control all of the imports & exports & all of their respective profits. They have plenty of prominent cops, detectives, politicians, & doctors on their payroll. The name Thomas Shelby swiftly became synonymous with ruthless tactics, cunning plans, bold fearlessness, & razor blades.

Next, Tommy had become increasingly more involved in the local community, carefully curating a reputation for being dependable & altruistic. He made himself seen around town, greasing the right palms, remembering the right names & faces & small details they mentioned. People now know his name. They remember his face. Local business owners respect him for his willingness to assist them in small tasks & for his consistent patronage. Soon, Thomas was elected onto the boards of a few prominent businesses: hospitals, schools, non-profit organizations. He garnered notoriety for his strong leadership skills & successfully gained the reverence of the lower-class citizens among whom he dwells. Tommy is now considered a pillar of the community, genuinely respected & said to be reliable, intelligent, & philanthropic.

Once he's able to finance his campaign he begins to involve himself in the muddy world of politics. His face becomes commonplace in most homes as he begins to film & produce campaign ads, participate in interviews for newspapers & magazines & television shows, explaining that his agenda is to give a voice to those who have been silenced, to stand a fight for those whom Gotham has tried to quietly dispose of. He openly criticizes the platforms of other mainstream politicians and their methods, often using ruthless blackmail to manipulate his competitors behind the scenes.

After establishing his empire, many things become clear about his time spent in Arkham. He walks with stiff joints and uses a mobility aid more often than not ( he favors a cane ). His bones ache, especially in the cold. Most mornings he has a limp. His face is gaunt & hollow, his eyes haunted & filled with the kind of coldness that can only be earned, not faked. The severe claustrophobia is the worst of it all.

There are other things, too; much less explainable things.

He never loses a coin toss. His aim is consistently deadly. He has uncanny intuition ; sometimes he's even able to tell what someone is thinking, down to the very word. He has prophetic dreams. Polly calls it Luck Magic. Tommy thinks he can reasonably guess which chemical compound they'd shot into his veins had been the one to do it ; but he can never be sure. & anyway, it doesn't matter.

Either way, he's going to kill the Batman.

The Festival - Developer Log 9, 11/11/2024

Good evening!

So much has happened since my last checkin, that I don’t even know where to begin.

Just like in the last update, I’ve done a lot of work optimizing the code in Unreal, which wound up being hugely critical because I had to manually update the DialogueTree plugin I’ve been using due to a bug in the previous release. It was not an easy process, but I got it taken care of, and I’ve been making steady progress ever since.

Five major changes from last time worth noting:

First of all, I’ve been tweaking the character fullbody sprites I had in the previous iteration, editing their size, proportions, and even their expressions. Early feedback I have gotten from friends has made me confident that this was a superb and necessary move, as the sprites really add a lot of personality to the conversations.

Secondly, I made rough draft drawings of the food scenes that I had incorporated into the game the for the last devlog as a prototype. As you can see below, the food scenes feature little plates of food that you can eat from which progress the conversation you are currently having with NPCs, and each food item even includes flavor-text describing the item you are eating.

Thirdly, I created a character model for Roxane, another major character of the story (seen below). Over the course of writing the script, she grew from a minor character to one of its most crucial, as she has been swindled by the villain of the story, Helvan Dynicus, into letting him stay at her home, and it is up to Nishma and the Elderwomen of Hemmingward to try to save her from him.

Fourthly, Morgan and I have been fleshing out the interior environments for the game. I was working on the temple interior, while Morgan modeled a litany of props for the interior of Roxane's house, pictured below:

Fifthly, and lastly, I successfuly exported and uploaded the first build for the game. It took me some time to get it to a point I am happy with, especially since it only includes the first act out of three, but now people can actually check out what I have been working on for the past year and change. I’m really happy to be at this point, even if I still have a lot of work ahead of me.

I will upload the link to the game in a separate post. Partly because I want it to be a standalone post, and partly because I may re-export and re-upload the build in order to make some last minute changes. But otherwise, I hope to have a link for it posted here in the next couple days.

I may not be able to get another devlog done until after the semester ends, but I will do my best to document everything else I have gotten done by then. Hopefully I will have a full game to show, even if it is incredibly rough around the edges.

At this point, the important thing is to have *a* game to show off in full.

Capturing the ambience of 007: Quantum of Solace (2008)

This James Bond adventure built on the Call of Duty engine also visits the major locales of Casino Royale. Many of the game's settings are presented with bonus atmosphere compared to their silver screen counterparts.

This guide will explore the PC and Xbox 360 releases.

Running the game

Obtain a valid DVD copy of QoS on eBay or another secondary seller. If this is impossible you can try your luck on trusted "Abandonware" download sites. According to the Project: Consolation community, Flatout keys can be used to activate QoS.

QoS uses the antiquated Games for Windows platform. You may need to set that up independently of the game before first run. There is also a 1.1 patch you should install - as always check PCGamingWiki for information on these, and other concerns.

Extracting PC sounds

You can decompress the PC version's FF ("fast file") archives with offzip.

offzip.exe -a common.ff 0

When opening and searching the results with a hex editor, you'll notice the names of level-specific sound effects e.g. vibrating_rattle.wav. These mark the starting point for the relevant asset's data.

You can copy-paste that data into a file, but of course the file will also need a proper header to become playable. According to the same guide, we can then use Audacity's "raw data" import, followed by an export, to give it one.

Another approach to adding headers is vgmstream's TXTH system. These files tell vgmstream how to interpret headerless binary data as audio. Here is the best TXTH I came up with for PC:

codec = IMA sample_rate = 44100 channels = 1 interleave = 0 num_samples = data_size

This almost works but it's not quite right - there's obvious clipping. Perhaps our decoding bit-depth is off. I suspect this has something to do with IMA being a 4-bit specification but couldn't figure it out. It's definitely some kind of ADPCM though. The Xbox 360 equivalent may use XMA2 - more investigation is needed.

Exploring CoD Tools

Reverse-engineering legend ID-Daemon created tools for extracting models from this game, but not sounds.

There's also a tool called Greyhound, which is a continuation of Wraith, a well-known Call of Duty asset extractor. From what I can tell, it's capable of recognizing models and animations from QoS but not sounds.

Tom Crowley's tool is a popular extractor for FF archives. He also offers a Black Ops Sound tool, but neither of these does anything when QoS's FF archives are dragged into it.

Another tool I found, Chronic's Black Ops WAV Extractor, is no longer available. There's no indication that it supports QoS anyway.

Extracting 360 sounds

Let's turn our attention to the 360 version's sounds. Fortuitously, we can find XMA ambient streams in the disc's amb folder. The game's common sound effects (e.g. impacts and footsteps) are also located here, in their respective directories.
