How to make a character Model Swap in an Unreal game.

This will be done like a recipe, I’m going to go over EVERY step of the process

How to Mod (Model Swap)

HW2

What is needed:

Base game you plan to mod

The Unreal Engine Software the game uses UE4Editor

-must be the same engine number too.

-can be downloaded from the Epic store, make sure you find the right version.

UnrealPak (Specifically from this Tools Folder)

Blender 

Asset Editor

Befzz psk/psa importer addon 

Grim-es material combiner addon

Pre-setup (Optional, but will save you stress):

Make a Folder just for modding on your computer

In that Folder make a Folder for the tools, blender files, unreal levels, and exports.

Go to where UE_4.27 (or whatever version) and go to Engine, Binaries, Win64, find UE4Editor, make a shortcut, and put that shortcut in your mod folder.

Step 1: Getting your models

Plan who you want to replace with who

For this tutorial I only know how to do this method with .psk models, which can be found in other games. 

Just know some games have an AES key. There are ways to bypass this, such as searching for it online, or using a tool. 

Open Umodel (Easiest, but not reliable.)

Click the … icon

Find the paks folder

For HW2 it is Steam_Common_HW2_Thumper_Content_Paks

Also pin this to quick access if you can, helps save time

Select folder

Check Override game detection

Put in the engine the game uses. (HW2 is Unreal engine 4 and 4.27)

Press OK

Find the mesh of the character you plan on replacing

Unfortunately every game will use different terms and folders to organize assets.

Fortunately HW2 has almost all assets in one folder for each character (DO BE WARNED THERE ARE RARE EXCEPTIONS. Pay attention)

Cheat Sheet for HW2 at least:

MI/MAT_=Material

ABP_=Animation Blueprint

SK_=Mesh/Model

SKEL/RIG_=Skeleton

T_=Texture

Example using CaptainFoxy

Double click the file

Click Tools, then Export

I would recommend changing the export pass to a specific export folder.

Press OK

Close Umodel for now

FMODEL method (Harder, but reliant) DO NOT SKIP THE PREPARATION PROCESS!

Run FModel.exe

Go to Directory

Click Selector

Click the … icon and find the paks folder

For HW2 it is Steam_Common_HW2_Thumper_Content_Paks

Also pin this to quick access if you can, helps save time

Select folder

Detected game should be Paks

Make sure Unreal Engine is correct

Press OK the software will close, if you were able to get your model from Umodel skip to the next segment.

Open up Fmodel again

In the archives tab click the folder (There should only be one) you will sent to the Folders tab

Click Thumper, then content

Find the character you want to use

Example Using Roxy

Right click, and save model .psk

Exit FModel for now

Step 3 Open Blender ( I am assuming you know Blender Basics) (Really Good Tutorial)

Set up the addons (You should have two)

Edit_Preferences 

Click Install

Find the .py file

Press Install addon, and select it. 

 Import the Model you plan to replace

Import Skeletal Mesh/.psk

Uncheck Scale Down

Do the same for the model that will replace it

Uncheck Scale Down

Move, and pose the model and mesh to best match the model you will replace.

Make sure the mesh AND rig is selected

Go to Object Mode and select the mesh you plan on using for your mod (Upside down triangle)

Click the wrench icon (Modifier properties) there should be a modifier, click the down arrow next to the camera button. Hit apply

Delete the Skeleton/Rig (Symbol Looks like a person). The models scale might have adjusted, just readjust as needed

With the same mesh selected, click the button that looks like an upside down triangle with three squares. (Weights)

Hit the arrow pointing down, and hit delete all unlocked groups.

Step 4: Transferring Weights 

Select the mesh that will be replaced 

Holding control select the mesh that is the replacement

Go to weight paint

If you did this right, the new mesh will be color

Click weights_Transfer Weights

In that little pop up that says Transfer Mesh Data click it 

Change source layer from Active Layer to By name.

All of the weights from the old model are now on the new one

Go back to object mode

Click on the mesh that will be the replacement

Click the wrench icon (Modifier properties)

Add Modifier_Armature

Object_(If you did this right, you should only have one choice)

Delete the mesh of the character you are replacing.

It’s gone, it can’t hurt you anymore.

Rest, you deserve it (also now I don’t have to specify what mesh to use, you should only have one!)

Holding shift drag the mesh to the rig/skeleton 

If your computer can handle it

Import the old model again 

Delete it’s skeleton, and move the mesh over. This will be your reference. (If your computer can handle two instances of Blender running at once, then I would suggest you open it in that one. Saves time, and with how long weights take. It is nice to have a “bookmark” (I lock the weights I have finished)

Now go to weights 

Unfortunately, this is all you, try to match the original model's weights as best as you can.

There is a method I use, but it’s complex. Just do your best.

You don’t need to use EVERY weight. So don’t panic if you notice your new char has four fingers and the other one has five. Just delete what isn't needed.

Rename the rig to “Armature” (The little man icon, just double click the words to change the text)

Seeing how it looks (Optional, but would recommend to see if there's any major clipping or model deforms)

Save your work, and close Blender or minimize it.

Open FMODEL 

Find an animation file for the character being replaced.

Try to pick one that loops or showcases multiple moving parts.

Right click, save animation

Close FMODEL 

Open up blender again

Select the armature  

Import an animation or .psa file 

It has to be one that the character you are replacing uses.

Press the play button 

If you think everything looks good, continue to the next step. Otherwise adjust weights as needed.

Make sure you clear the animation and reset the pose to normal

Textures:

Put the Texture on your character

ORM and Normals too. 

Google how to do that shit.

Press Update material List.

Press Save Atlass too, and then save it.

Exporting:

Select model (upside down triangle), and hold control and select armature (lil man)

Export as FBX

Selected Objects

Bake Animations OFF

Add Leaf Bones OFF

Cooking

Have a version of Unreal Editor for the game you are modding. 

Has to be the same version or it won’t work

Create a shortcut

Can find it under UE_WhateverVersionUhave_Engine_Binaries_Win64

It will be called UE4Editor.

Create a shortcut, and use that shortcut.

Create a Folder to house your modding stuff.

Create a Blank Project

For the name: It will be the name of the Folder that’s NOT Engine.

There should only be one but if not it will be the folder with Binaries, Config, Content, etc in it

EX: HW2 is Thumper, Five Laps At Freddy’s is flag, HW is called freddys. 

Click Create Project

“Content” is everything in the game. 

Whatever Character you make. You want to match the path the game uses PERFECTLY. 

Exception is the Materials and Textures (Later)

EX:Making a change to Captain Foxy

Characters_Captain Foxy

Games will have different ways they organize stuff. So you just need to pay attention, and I would suggest you have Fmodel or Umodel open for reference.

Drag the .FBX file you created into the correct folder 

Just Press Import All

Rename the new Model (Pink) to what the model you are replacing was called

Do the same for the physics (Cream) and Skeleton assets (Blue)

Rename the Material to something easy but unique.

I’d recommend MA_Name

Create a Material Folder 

Put all Materials in here

Create a Texture Folder in the Material Folder

Put all Textures in here

Save All

Press Cook Content for Windows.

Wherever you saved the project.

It will be the games main file name

(Example HW2 is Thumper)

Gamefile_Saved_Cooked

Rename the file called WindowsNoEditor to whatever you want your mod to be called with an _P 

IT HAS TO HAVE _P otherwise it will not work

Open it up

Delete the Engine file

Open up the other folder

In it, delta everything that’s NOT Content

Delete everything NOT related to what you are modding

Example Captain Foxy is in the Characters Folder, so anything not Characters is trash

In the Characters folder, unless I plan on doing multiple characters in one pak. Delete all the other folders.

Process for Materials and Texture loading 

Open the materials folder. 

Copy and paste the name somewhere easy to get to.

Delete both uasset and uexp files.

Now Open Uasset or Fmodel

Find a Material to replace.

This can be any Material

Recommend using one that the old model used

Export it as raw data.

Should get a .uasset and a .uep file.

Copy these to the cooked material folder where the old material was

Rename these to the new Material name.

Open Asset Editor

Open the .uasset file of the Material in the cooked folder

Click the Header list.

Manually change the Material path used to the new material path created for the mod.

Find the old material again, this time without the path. Rename it the replacement material name

Manually rename all textures to match your new ones

Then do the same for the textures without the path.

Hit Save

Repeat this process for any other unique Materials

Making the mod

Go all the way back to the Cooked folder.

Open the UnrealPak folder  in a new window or tab

Drag the cooked folder to _UnrealPak-With-Compression

Wait, and then press a key

You should now have  a .pak file in your cooked folder.

You can rename it again, just make sure _P is at the end.

Installing the mod

In the Content folder of the game you are modding.

Open the Paks folder

Create a folder called mods

Put the .pak folder for your mod in that folder

Play your game.

Yay!

I think the inaugural post on the writing blog I've been trying to set up may well have to be a PSA on things that I would prefer people to start doing more on AO3, at least in some capacity. This largely has to do with proper tagging, and the lack thereof; either underestimating the severity of what they've written, or what it may look like when clarifying context is not provided; fear of spoiling the fic for the readers overriding basic decency wrt to potentially triggering- or even just severely squicking- content; or not knowing what you should tag your fic with, and opting not to tag it at all just to get it out there (or sometimes general outright laziness/sorriness, and perhaps even active malice on occasion).

There's also the issue of people neglecting to properly rate the fic for similar reasons; an unrated fic can include everything from simple oneshot fluff, to explicit sex scenes, rape, and/or homicide, and without good tags (either failure to tag, understating tags, or deliberately playing coy as either an in-joke with your usual audience, or active, taunting malice to the unsuspecting reader), nobody would be any the wiser without having already read the damn thing. I'm so fucking sick of it; yeah sure people should go into certain experiences a little bit blind more often, as it can enhance the enjoyment of the thing; but the thing is, it should be the reader's choice. Whether you are trying to protect yourself, or even just outright looking for something, bc you're in the mood for smth specific, good tagging and rating is important. If someone doesn't mind being surprised, then they can just... not read the tags. Hell, there's probably plugins or themes out there, ways to hide the tags from sight unless the user decides to view them; maybe even section by section: archive warnings, pairing tags, character tags, and additional tags. I'm sure that somebody could cook something up. It's important that it remains the reader's choice.

Basically I read something today that was severely understated in its tagging, with multiple lines implying something that wasn't even tagged for at all (and it's possible that they didn't even imply it that way; but if the chapter ends shortly after with nothing in the way of clarifying context and you admit that you may or may not write anymore chapters for it, then how the fuck else are we supposed to take it???), and it kind of put a huge damper on a part of my day for a while. Gave me a lil anxiety, too; sure I've (probably, maybe) read (marginally) worse, but goddamn, what the actual fuck is wrong with you??

aggressive reminder that anyone can discover the magic of hzd’s incredible narrative by watching this cutscene compilation. it might take a few days but it’s fuckin’ worth it for the diverse cast of characters, rich mythic overtones, exciting twists, and seriously unique approach to post-apocalyptic storytelling.

PSA: escaping abusive parents

When it was time to go to college, I only had one parent (as I lost my mother to cancer); my dad, who is abusive. My whole life I planned to cut him off when I went to college, or at the least, after I graduated college. As it turns out, the day I left for college, I never spoke to him again, and now it’s been almost a year and I don’t think I’ll ever have contact with him again.

Now, a lot of my situation surrounding leaving my dad is based on luck and good fortune, so this may not be as helpful to others who have complications (such as, you don’t have the opportunity to go to college, or your parent(s) are somehow preventing you from being financially independent, etc.). These are quite common so I feel extremely lucky to be in my circumstances. But I hope speaking from my own experiences will at least help a few people get on the right track to cutting contact and being independent from your parent(s).

The biggest thing that helped me was having other adults that I trust. If you have someone like this, consider reaching out--I know it’s hard feeling like a burden but chances are they would love to help you. One particular woman offered me a place to stay, and another woman (a teacher) helped me by driving me to the bus station to get to the airport (my first semester was abroad) and driving me a couple other places (I didn’t have a license). 

Another thing that will help you, as you probably already know, is getting a job, and saving as much as you possibly can. Open up your own bank account and have your earnings deposited there, where your parents can’t touch it. Every penny counts. Be frugal and resourceful.

Studying abroad my first semester definitely helped create distance between me and my dad, but I realize this is a very extraordinary circumstance--so, maybe consider applying to a college at least a few hours from home, if possible. Find a school that is either relatively cheap or offers great financial aid. I go to Syracuse, and the financial aid there is so good that I only had to pay a few thousand dollars in tuition the first semester, which I had from my summer savings. 

I have had to swallow my pride and ask for help from adults at times. For my second semester I had to ask one of my uncles to cosign on a loan so that I could pay for school. Hopefully this is a possibility for you. 

Next, it is imperative that you have all of your personal documents: Social security card, birth certificate, etc. My dad was keeping my SSC from me, so I had to go to the Social Security Office and ask for a new one. Whatever you have to do, make sure you have all of your documents.

This may be one of the most important things: get a Dependency Override from your University. This means that you won’t have to put your parent(s) on your FAFSA or CSS Profile, which means you will get a lot more in financial aid. You just have to prove that you have no contact with your parent(s), and you’re set. I did this during my Freshman year of college, and for the rest of University I’ll hardly have to pay a penny in tuition. The hardest part about cutting contact with your parent(s) after high school is financial security, and doing this will cut your most significant expense.

You may also have to get your own cell phone plan, groceries, etc, and in doing this just learn how to be frugal until you are financially stable. Right now I’m still on the fence about getting health insurance, but your university probably offers a plan.

One thing I haven’t covered is the parent’s response and how to deal with it. I think maybe the luckiest thing for me is that my dad never even tried to contact me until the end of my first semester. When I left for college, we just stopped talking--no fight, no letter, no explanation. He has tried to get me back in his life a few times, but for the most part he just let me go. I know this will be far from the reality for most children of abusive parents, so I really don’t know what advice I can give you there.

If you want to reblog with other tips, or ways to deal with separation when you have a difficult circumstance, that would be great, because I had a relatively easy time and don’t have complete in depth advice.

SAFE DRIVING PSA

In the fall of 2018, I created this two-part PSA for a digital design class project that called for an anti-distracted driving theme. I found myself particularly attached to the subject matter of this assignment. On July 30th, 2017, on I-75 in Troy, I lost my big brother to a car accident in which he was a passenger. He was 22 years old. The crash occurred as a result of a number of unfortunate choices by both vehicles involved in the accident. Although my family and I have made peace with what we cannot control, a situation like this inevitably leaves you wondering what could’ve been different; more importantly, it makes you ask what you can do to prevent anyone from having to go through the same.

All too often, young drivers feel invincible. I myself will admit guilt—I’ve picked up my phone while driving to play music, or answer a text, telling myself that taking my eyes off the road for mere seconds is trivial. Since my brother’s death, my driving has changed for the better. However, nobody should ever have to wait until a tragedy happens to realize the importance of safe driving habits.

It is my hope that through a series of modern, visually exciting graphics targeted at young drivers, MDOT can launch a social media-based campaign encouraging safe driving habits. Like the example below, I believe that one of the most effective ways to get a message such as this one across is with harsh realism. The aesthetics of the PSAs would override a young driver’s natural tendencies to dismiss the age-old “don’t text and drive” message. Making a visually interesting composition makes young eyes want to engage with it. First, they notice it. Second, they read and internalize its the message. Thirdly, they share it with colleagues through social media. This approach has the potential to make a real difference in the way kids think about safe driving, a topic dearly important to me.

PSA: Don’t Cast Spells on Other People W/O Permission AKA: Consent Still Applies Here

I just saw a love spell on my dash from a person I don’t follow and it really bothers me that there was this cutesy little spell about how to make someone like you just floating around out there. Does no one understand that you’re essentially forcing someone to do something for you by doing that? 

You’re forcing someone to want to date you. Not only that, but you don’t know what them liking you will look like, or do. You’re letting your infatuation in the way of another person’s life. They don’t like you, maybe not yet, but it is not your place to butt into their life and mess things up. 

You don’t know if their life was meant to go on without liking you. You don’t know what wonderful person they could have met that led them to great things. You don’t know what may be planned for them, that will be lost if you interrupt things. And, how well do you know them? My first crush in high school came out as gay a year or two later. Could you imagine how absolutely wrong it would be for me to try to change that because I assumed I just wasn’t his type? You don’t know what you’re altering by using that spell.

What about your own safety and well being? Or your happiness? You need to consider the ways this can change the course of your life, too. You may have had a more fulfilling partner in your future, someone better suited for you. Think about how your own life could go against what was intended for you, how this could cost you what you were meant to have.

Safety wise... What if they’re abusive and you just don’t know? What if they spell makes them afraid to lose you, or some other unintended consequences? Well now you’ve got someone stuck on you, threatening to hurt themselves or you if you don’t stay with them. Who knows if by then you’ll remember the spell you used in order to reverse it? Who knows if it will even work? Is it possible for Stockholm Syndrome to occur after a long-standing spell has lost effect, or has lifted? Who knows how many other spells and methods you might have to use to get away from them?

Aside from all of this, you are saying that your wants are more important than theirs. Your will overrides theirs. You don’t actually care about them being happy, living life they way they want to. A good relationship does not a forceful hand make. 

You know what is okay to do, though? Love spells that attract love to you, that attract WILLING PARTNERS. Don’t start meddling in other people’s lives. You do not know what is good for them. Unless someone ASKS YOU TO CAST A SPELL ON/FOR THEM, DON’T DO IT. You are not in charge of them. You do not get to pick how they live their life.

4 Tech Advances Making Driving Safer

  This year’s class of cars is generating serious buzz, and it’s not only because they’re so stylish. No, today’s drivers are excited about the new features, largely powered by automation, that are making driving safer. If you’re on the market for a new car, be on the lookout for these new safety capabilities, coming to dealerships near you.

In-Car Monitoring

One of the most serious problems plaguing our roads todays is distracted driving, such as texting behind the wheel, and while there are countless PSAs warning drivers about the behavior, they’ve had a limited impact. Now car companies are taking things into their own hands with in-car monitoring systems.

In-car monitoring systems use cameras to monitor drivers’ eye movements to ensure that they’re always focused on the road. In addition to addressing distracted driving, this technology could also alert to drowsy drivers who are falling asleep behind the wheel, which would be useful for late night driving and long trips, and is already used by many in the trucking industry.

IoT Meets 5G

Cars are getting smarter, but they can’t meet new safety landmarks without support from other systems, including 5G connectivity. So how is 5G changing the way we drive? 5G promises to supplement self-driving technologies like auto braking so that external traffic sensors could potentially override in-car failures. Improved connectivity could also help local traffic system to communicate with drivers in emergency circumstances or when there are infrastructural issues impacting traffic flow.

Blind Spot Monitoring

All vehicles have a blind spot and the inability to see clearly at all times is a serious safety concern. That’s why it’s no surprise that blind spot monitoring is one of the most popular new safety features, found on 73% of 2017 cars and increasingly a standard option. If you have the choice, blind spot monitoring a necessity as it can guard against serious accidents.

Crash Avoidance

While tools like blind spot monitoring can help you avoid accidental collisions caused by visual interference, more cars now also include crash avoidance systems that can detect pedestrians, cyclists, and even animals. When you’re focused on the road, it’s easy to miss a pedestrian that suddenly dodges into traffic, especially if they’re not in a crosswalk or at a light, but these systems can stop or slow your vehicle to minimize harm to pedestrians. It is important to note that these systems have really only been tested at low speeds. While pedestrians theoretically shouldn’t be a problem in higher speed areas, it’s concerning that this feature might not work where it’s needed most.

Investing In Safety

While some of these new safety features come standard on today’s cars, many features still come only at an extra cost, so you’ll need to pay up to benefit from these tools. And though each passing year leads to more standard safety features, for drivers who can’t afford a new vehicle, it could be a decade or more until they have access to these safety features. It’s important to be aware of this added cost and how that will slow adoption of and access to these technologies because how we behave on the road has a lot to do with how we perceive other drivers and with shared safety norms.

You have a right to delete your posts or comments in this sub or others. You can edit your post history to be absolutely empty. There is no rule against that. It simply provides a minimum level of interaction with the community before you lead the discussion by posting. It cuts down on spam. There are negative impacts as well (echo chambering, delay for important questions) but the community decided the benefits outweigh the negatives long ago.When you delete your comment history you delete backup for your comment karma. Even mods can't see deleted comments - though be aware there are archive systems out there. Nothing really goes away on the internet, it just gets harder to find.If you don't have 10 comment karma you can't post. This means if you do something asinine but not specifically against the rules the resulting downvotes can take away your ability to post. That is a feature, not a bug. Mods can override this and we check to see that it isn't being abused (PM the mods if you think it was for you) but think of it as a community sponsored ban.This means if you delete your history you don't have 10 comment karma here and so may not be able to post - The Automod has been a bit sketchy on catching under 10 karma in /r/Entrepreneur but high comment karma elsewhere accounts with some slipping though and some caught. It might be associated with the account, where the karma was earned, how old it is, if the OP submitted on new, old, mobile or 3rd party app versions of Reddit but it means it drops to manual enforcement. Manual enforcement is bans and afterward manual review of your posts.If you want to add value here and elsewhere I suggest you don't prune and shape your history. Instead, act like you want to be remembered and make comments that can be used both now and in the future. There is a better chance they'll stick around and a much better chance they'll do good.Edit: One more thing to know. Removed history is a widely used game for accounts that are bought/sold or that are used to sell spam posts. They seem to be cleaned out of anything recent and are sold for having high karma or involve claims of high influence. Don't make your account look like theirs.

Technologists don't do enough work to imagine and counteract the potential harms of our products. Most of us are trying to make people's lives better, so we don’t imagine how a stalker or a burglar or an identity thief would make use of our products.

In this story in The Atlantic, Geoff Manaugh writes about our growing surveillance state from a slightly different perspective - that of the potential criminal (and we’re all potential criminals given the right type of regime). Geoff is the author of A Burglar’s Guide to the City, a fantastic book on casing spaces.

“In October 2017...researchers at Mitsubishi revealed that they had successfully used machine learning “to pick a single voice out of a crowd,” allowing them to track a person against the background noise of a cocktail party—or a political demonstration. This ability might allow your smart speaker to recognize your voice requesting a song change even in the midst of a New Year’s bash, but it will also be a boon for law enforcement. Imagine the police hunt of the near future, for example, as a suspect risks having her voice picked up and identified by various combinations of strangers’ smartphones and Amazon Echo devices. Fleeing crime scenes in utter silence might be the strategic response.”

HomePod VUI (not a link, sorry) Every HomePod review mentions the same compelling feature for anyone who’s ever yelled ‘OK, GOOGLE!’ or ‘ALEXA!’ over the sound of music or a dinner party - with the HomePod, you can use a speaking voice (or even lower) to invoke Siri. It doesn’t seem like a big deal, but it’s a great way to make the device less disruptive and more a part of everyday life.
