Pollic Tower is one of the fanciest hotels around; it goes up so high that they have to bolt some of their windows shut.

The works of graphic artist, M.C. Escher (1898-1972) became enormously popular during the late 1960s. Many of his creations were printed as posters and given the Psychedelic treatment with added florescent paints that would glow under black lights. Like Lovecraft, Escher explored architectural themes that were impossible by the known laws of physics. Lovecraft's description of Cthulhu's cosmic city brings Escher to mind. Though Escher would resemble Lovecraft's biographer, L. Sprague deCamp, in his later years, there are certainly some similar aspects in his facial features here to H. P. Lovecraft. Lovecraft, however, would never be seen wearing a beard! (Exhibit 288)

Oneiric Spaces - digital paintings #2
Tumblr media
A second picture in my series, this time showing a twisted staircase.
The staircase
I keep having this recurring dream about the flat I lived in my whole life. I have to get to the highest floor, usually 14th or 16th, despite living on a 2nd in real life (and despite my flat having only 10 floors). But there's the catch - the elevator doesn't work, or is missing, or will kill you, and the stairs are gone as well - only a railing remains, transformed into some kind of a rickety ladder. Sometimes it even resembles a rollercoaster track. The only way to get to any floor is to climb it. Sometimes there are checkpoints in a form of a landing, but often those to are missing.
As with any other dream of mine, if I fall even a small amount, I will immediately wake up, and sometimes I'm lucid enough to realize that, and use it to wake myself up (to stop the dream and luckily have a new, better one). Usually though, I don't realize it, and then my only concern is to not fall to my death. As you can imagine, those dreams are pretty stressful, which seems to be a pattern for me.

A CHAOS of form, lines, colors, and function, on one corner vs. the strict form and order of Classical Architecture not far away. 2 scenes in modern day NYC. Two attitudes in conflict and another reason why Lovecraft came to hate NYC even in his time. (Exhibit 385)

Oneiric Spaces - digital paintings #1
Tumblr media
Alright, so this is going to be a series of posts about the digital paintings I did for my classes this year. All of them were inspired by my own dreams.
So, the first one:
An entrance to the flat
This is the first painting I did for my class, which depicts one of the most common themes in my more stressful dreams. An entrance to an important building, that is completely inaccessible for me. Usually the obstacle is in the form of modified terrain or impossible architecture, like here, where the door is situated high above ground, on a concrete slab.
My body is very limited in my dreams. I tend to not be able to run, fly or even jump down in them. In fact, the sensation of falling almost always results in me waking up. Because of that, places like in this painting usually completely stop me form achieving the goal of my dream. Even in my more lucid dreams I'm confided to what I can do in real life, so scaling a smooth concrete slab is out of the question.
Obstacles like this lead to a lot of stress in my dreams (sometimes so much I wake up sore), especially since they tend to appear in dreams tide with some sort of responsibility. Places like this one are almost always present when I have to finish an important exam, deliver something or meet someone. Well, at least they look cool.

After learning about the video game "CONTROL" and watching Julia LePetit-Drawfee play it, I have amended my views on brutalist architecture.
I used to think that brutalist architecture was a completely miserable and hideous style of architecture to expect human beings to exist in or around, with absolutely no acceptable applications.
But NOW I think that brutalist architecture is a completely miserable and hideous style of architecture to expect human beings to exist in or around, which is actually quite suitable for a visually striking video game about a living building that fucking hates you and is actively trying to kill you and everyone in it. ✅ ✅ ✅
I'm being silly but tbh anyone who disagrees with me can go ahead and spend 10 years commuting in the dingy gray concrete brutalist dimness of the DC metro system and then fucking get back to me.

How am I ever supposed to write any stories when coming up with ideas is so easy and writing them is so hard?
