Welcome to Pollapalooza, our weekly polling roundup.

Poll(s) of the week

In the past couple weeks, many states have announced plans to gradually lift the stay-at-home orders put in place to stem the tide of the coronavirus. However, polls show that most Americans believe it is too soon to reopen.

In their latest poll (conducted May 3-5), The Economist/YouGov found that only 11 percent of adults believed it was safe to end social distancing and reopen businesses right now. Six percent said it would be safe in about two weeks, and another 19 percent said it would be in a month or so. A plurality (29 percent) thought it would take several months, and 15 percent even said a year or longer. A Morning Consult survey taken April 29-30 found that just 20 percent of registered voters thought the economy should reopen in April (i.e., immediately) or May, 37 percent said June or July, 16 percent said August or September, and 12 percent said October or later. And a May 5 poll from Global Strategy Group and GBAO for left-leaning firm Navigator Research found that 60 percent of Americans opposed reopening the country in the next few weeks, versus 36 percent who supported it. Finally, a May 2-5 poll by Civiqs for Daily Kos asked respondents flat out whether they supported having a stay-at-home order in place in their state: Sixty-five percent said yes, and 29 percent said no.

Simply put, Americans think the stay-at-home orders are doing a lot more good than bad. That same Economist/YouGov survey found that 59 percent of adults believed the orders were extremely or very effective at stopping the spread of COVID-19; an additional 31 percent said they were somewhat effective, while only 10 percent doubted their effectiveness. In addition, a whopping 75 percent thought it was either very or somewhat likely that states reopening would result in an increase in COVID-19 cases. And in an Axios/Ipsos poll conducted May 1-4, 67 percent of Americans said that they thought returning to their pre-coronavirus life right now would be a large or moderate risk to their health and well-being; only 30 percent of Americans said they were willing to accept such a risk to return to their normal lives.

In general, Americans are taking a cautious attitude toward reopening. According to a Monmouth University poll conducted April 30-May 4, 63 percent of adults were more concerned about lifting restrictions too quickly than not lifting them quickly enough; 29 percent said the opposite. And the Navigator Research poll reported that 59 percent of Americans were more concerned about social distancing ending too soon, while 32 percent were more concerned that it would go on too long.

Even if businesses reopen, polls suggest many Americans would still choose not to patronize them. A Washington Post/University of Maryland poll conducted April 28-May 3 found that 78 percent of adults would be uncomfortable eating out in a restaurant right now, while just 22 percent would be comfortable. Respondents also said 67 percent to 33 percent that they would be uncomfortable going to a retail clothing store. However, some people might feel differently if states give the all-clear. Fifty-nine percent of respondents to an Edison Research poll for Marketplace (conducted April 23-28) said they would be comfortable returning to their normal routine when their state relaxes its stay-at-home order.

There are some signs, though, that people are itching to emerge from quarantine, although most are still following social-distancing guidelines. Per Navigator Research, the share of Americans who said they are spending almost all their time at home ticked down from 84 percent on April 24 to 78 percent on May 5. The percentage who were avoiding in-person interactions with family and friends went from 71 percent to 66 percent. And the latest poll from Axios/Ipsos reported that 26 percent of Americans had recently visited friends or relatives, up from 19 percent in their April 17-20 poll.

The slip in Americans’ social-distancing habits could have to do with the warming weather around the country. It could also be that, as some public-health officials feared would happen, more people feel safer going outside now that many states are mandating face masks. Indeed, the share of Americans who say they are wearing face masks in public is on the rise. According to The Economist/YouGov, 75 percent of adults said they have worn a mask in public, up from 53 percent in mid-April. And 73 percent of Axios/Ipsos respondents said they always or sometimes wore a mask when leaving the home; that number was 56 percent in their April 10-13 survey.

Overall, though, Americans remain as worried about COVID-19 as ever. According to our coronavirus polling tracker, 68.2 percent of Americans are either very or somewhat concerned that they or someone they know will become infected with the coronavirus; only 31.3 percent are not very or not at all concerned.

Worries about the economy are stable too, with 55.2 percent being very concerned, 31.4 percent being somewhat concerned and just 11.9 percent being not very or not at all concerned.

But polls consistently show that, to the extent medical and economic concerns come into conflict, Americans are prioritizing their health. According to Monmouth, 56 percent thought that minimizing the number of people who get sick is a more important consideration in lifting restrictions than avoiding a sustained economic downturn; only 33 percent thought the economy should be the priority. In the Edison Research/Marketplace survey, 65 percent said maintaining stay-at-home orders to stop the spread of COVID-19 was more important to them than relaxing those orders to help the economy, versus 33 percent who said the opposite. The gap was widest in Morning Consult’s data: Eighty percent of voters said Americans should continue to socially distance even if it means damaging the economy, and just 20 percent said the country should stop social distancing to stimulate the economy, even if it means spreading the coronavirus.

Finally, the percentage who approve of President Trump’s handling of the pandemic continues to decline. As of Thursday evening, 43.5 percent approved and 51.1 percent disapproved, bringing Trump’s coronavirus approval numbers almost perfectly in line with his overall job approval numbers.

Specific polls homed in on Trump’s daily coronavirus briefings as something that is hurting his image. In an April 22-24 Morning Consult poll, 53 percent of adults said the word “frustrating” described Trump’s conferences either very or somewhat well, versus 30 percent who thought the word did not fit. Respondents also said 46 percent to 36 percent that they were misleading and 46 percent to 34 percent that they were counterproductive. And according to Monmouth, only 33 percent of adults found Trump’s advice on the coronavirus helpful; 23 percent found it neither particularly helpful nor harmful, while 42 percent found it actively harmful.

Other polling bites

Monmouth also asked about former Senate staffer Tara Reade’s allegation of sexual assault against former Vice President Joe Biden. The overwhelming majority (86 percent) of registered voters said they had heard about the allegation, but many weren’t sure what to make of it: 37 percent said it was probably true, 32 percent said it was probably not true and 31 percent said that they didn’t know. Other polls by HuffPost/YouGov and Morning Consult found Americans similarly split on the allegation’s credibility, with large proportions saying they didn’t know enough to say.

In a CBS News/YouGov poll conducted last week, 36 percent of Democratic registered voters said that Sen. Elizabeth Warren was their first choice for Biden’s running mate. Another 19 percent preferred Sen. Kamala Harris, 14 percent preferred former Georgia House Minority Leader Stacey Abrams and 13 percent preferred Sen. Amy Klobuchar.

An April 30-May 1 poll from Democratic pollster Public Policy Polling showed a tight U.S. Senate race in Iowa: Republican incumbent Sen. Joni Ernst received 43 percent support, while Democrat Theresa Greenfield got 42 percent. It was the first Senate poll of Iowa since late last year, when polls were giving Ernst a 6- or 7-point lead.

These are aren’t the poll numbers you’re looking for: SSRS has released a survey of all things Star Wars.1 Sixty-eight percent of Americans have seen at least one Star Wars film; the Force is especially strong with the 16 percent who have seen all of them. Among those who have seen at least one, 64 percent preferred the original trilogy, while 13 percent have turned to the Dark Side (i.e., they like the prequel trilogy best). Never tell Han Solo the odds, but maybe he’ll like this poll: A plurality (16 percent) of Star Wars viewers say he’s their favorite character. Fifteen percent like Luke Skywalker the most, followed by Chewbacca with 11 percent. Didn’t anyone tell them to let the Wookiee win?

Already struggling to contain the coronavirus pandemic, Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro is facing a political crisis after a popular, anti-corruption cabinet minister resigned to protest Bolsonaro’s firing of Brazil’s federal police chief. In the wake of the scandal, pollster Datafolha finds that 45 percent of Brazilians support impeaching Bolsonaro, while 48 percent oppose it.

Trump approval

According to FiveThirtyEight’s presidential approval tracker, 43.3 percent of Americans approve of the job Trump is doing as president, while 51.4 percent disapprove (a net approval rating of -8.1 points). At this time last week, 42.9 percent approved and 52.4 percent disapproved (for a net approval rating of -9.5 points). One month ago, Trump had an approval rating of 45.4 percent and a disapproval rating of 49.7 percent, for a net approval rating of -4.3 points.

Generic ballot

In our average of polls of the generic congressional ballot, Democrats currently lead by 7.9 percentage points (48.5 percent to 40.6 percent). A week ago, Democrats led Republicans by 7.7 points (48.0 percent to 40.3 percent). At this time last month, voters preferred Democrats by 7.7 points (48.9 percent to 41.2 percent).

Rat-ical Case

I

Before the rat, my day had already been off to an unwelcome start. To start off, I hadn’t woken up until minutes after my first class began. This was especially unacceptable, because I was the one teaching it.

I considered not showing up at all and calling in sick, just to avoid a lecture from my employer (I was the one who was supposed to be giving lectures, not him), but I was rather dedicated to my job and students and so I decided against it. I was almost certain I'd be found out in the end, guaranteeing unemployment for me. I wasn't the most stable financially at the time.

I tugged on my coat and grabbed my briefcase before trudging out the door. Breakfast would only make me later, which I could not afford. The university I had taught at was a bit far, but there had been an electrical outage the previous night and the trains were likely not up yet, forcing me to walk the whole way. However, it was Friday, and I had the next week off anyway, so it didn't matter much to me. I would likely be doing nothing and therefore didn't need my legs.

The next issue in my day, happened right after that. One of my neighbors- a talkative man named Alexander, but insisted on being called Alex- had stopped me to chat, and because I was a kind man, I couldn't find it in myself to avoid him.

"Ah, Professor Stephen, what a surprise to see you up so early," the issue said, closing his gate behind him. He had brought his dog out with him, likely taking him on a walk. His name, if I recalled correctly, was Caleb (a strange name for a dog, if you were to ask me). "On our way to work, are we?"

I refrained from pointing out that it was indeed not early, and already noon. "Yes, so if you don't mind, Alex, I've no time to chat."

"Of course, of course..."

Now, one would expect that to be enough for him, but alas, it was not. Instead, he followed after me. Whether it was intentional, I was not sure.

"Say, you wouldn't happen to have seen Caleb's collar, have you?" He asked, dragging said dog along. He appeared to be trying to sit in a single spot, and I couldn't help but sympathize with him.

"No, I haven't," I said. "You see, Alex, I'm already running late. Any later, and I just might be fired." This bit was a lie but he did not know that. "I might rush ahead, but please don't take it personally."

Alexander’s eyes widened (How was that still possible?) and he frantically shook his head. “No, no, go right ahead. You’re a wonderful professor, Stephen. If only we had teachers like you back in the day...”

With the way he acted, I had always forgotten that he was actually older than me. It wasn’t a big difference, only six years, which made him 35. To me, he seemed in every way not much older than 23.

I sped up before he had a chance to talk my ear off, which I suppose I could consider a win. Only, it wasted another five minutes of my time.

The third instance wasn’t until I reach the school. Of all 53 of my students, only 6 had remained. I still do not know whether they were the only ones to show up at all, or if the others had left after waiting for some time. It wasn’t often that more than about 20 students showed up, and as their teacher... I don’t think they should remain in the school.

Deciding that there was no point in my staying, I allowed my students to go to their next class and prepared to leave. I only had one other class to teach that day, but I didn’t think many would show up, so there was no reason for me to wait.

But as I was leaving, I felt a flare of pain on my shin, and kicked reflexively. I heard a thud and that was when I saw the scoundrel of a rat. It noticed my gaze and let out a squeal, dashing off somewhere in the room. However, I was not going to allow the pest to remain, in fear of someone seeing it and reporting that such a creature was spotted in my classroom.

I grabbed at it’s tail and dragged it towards me, lifting it in my hands and squeezing it, though I wasn’t quite sure what I was aiming for at the time.

And then, the door opened, and in walked Prof. Peters, who taught in the law department. He took one look at me and shook his head disapprovingly, rushing over to force the rat out of my hands. It landed on the ground with another thud (did that hurt?) and hid behind the law professor. If it were possible, it appeared to be glaring at me.

“Prof. Stephen, you know you should not be hurting innocent animals like that. I’m sure it didn’t cause you any harm,” Prof. Peters spoke.

“Ah, but that is were you’re wrong, Peters. This rat, as I was leaving, bit me for no reason,” I defended myself. “It does not belong here, in the school or on school grounds.”

“You must be mistaken, Stephen. Henry would never bite someone without provocation, and the school has no such rule. You must have done something for him to have bitten you like that.”

“Henry? So you know this rat?”

“I do know this rat, he has resided in my classroom for some weeks.”

“Well, either way, all I was doing was leaving, so I see no reason for him to have bitten me.”

“Let him defend himself, he can explain.”

“Ha! a rat, explaining itself? It must first be able to talk.”

The rat finally came out from behind Peters. “Harsh man, I am perfectly capable of doing such, so would you please stop talking as though I cannot?” the small creature said.

I froze at the small voice, unable to believe my ears. The rodent has spoken! But that is impossible!

I looked over at Prof. Peters, thinking it was all him and he was playing a trick on me. That man, I had never liked him since I met him four years ago. He had always behaved in such a stale manner and was much to stern to his students.

“Do not look at me, Stephen, look at the one speaking! Have you no manners?” Peters spoke angrily. He looked down to the rat. “Henry, did you bite this man?”

“I did, I bit this man. I felt threatened by his presence,” the rat explained briefly.

“And why did you feel that way?”

“Because, he seemed very angry and was too close to my home,” it answered.

“Nonsense!” I cried. “This creature spouts utter nonsense (and that is assuming it isn’t you doing the talking, Prof. Peters)! While I did feel angry, I had not even noticed this rat until it bit me. Therefore, I was the one threatened, and my actions were justified.”

“You human, your initial response to being bitten should not be to squeeze it until it pops. My bite is not deadly, and I am a very clean rat,” it exclaimed. It looked up at Peters. “Mr. Peters, I would like to take this man to court, for attempted murder.”

I scoffed. “Rodents cannot say nor do such things.”

Peters ignored me. “I believe you have every right, Mr. Henry. And would you accept me as your lawyer?”

“Of course, Peters, who else?” it squeaked. “Please make all necessary preparations as soon as possible. I am... uncomfortable to be anywhere near this man so I will reside in a tree in the meantime. Good day, Peters. Stephen.”

With that, the rat scurried out the door.

Prof. Peters gave me that stale look of his. “Please think twice before you try to murder and innocent being next time. Who knows where you’ll end up?” And then he, too, left the room.

I could not comprehend what had just happened. Was I going to court because of a pesky rat? How was it possible that it had spoken? As if the court would allow this! It must have been some weird dream I was having... Either way, I was sure I had nothing to worry about.

Fortunately, my misfortune for the day ended there.

Somehow, Peters had arranged everything as the rat had asked in only one week (and the court did allow it, can you believe that?), so I hadn’t any choice but to spend my own week off working with my lawyer to defend myself.

The week went by fast and before I knew it, I was in the defendant’s seat next to my lawyer, while that rat and the professor occupied the table to my left. Since Henry was so small, he had to sit on the table to be seen. In front of him was a notebook and pen, but for what?

After the opening statements were made, the clerk (whose name I had not bothered remembering) swore in the jury and then the first witness, Henry, was asked to stand up.

“Do you swear that the evidence you shall give shall be the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth so help you God?” the clerk asked.

The rat picked up the pen in front of him and wrote something on the notebook. Peters picked it up and held it for the clerk to see. It had not been pointed in my direction, but I was still able to make out the words, in neat handwriting, ‘I do’.

Murmurs were heard throughout the jury. However, they quickly quieted down. Why was the rat writing? Could he not talk? Ah, but if I point it out, they’ll assume I’m crazy...

“Please state your full name,” the clerk said.

‘My name is Henry Watts,’ Henry wrote. It has a surname?

“Please be seated,” The judge said. It sat. Peters stood up.

“Mr. Watts, please tell the court what happened on the evening of April 1st, 1996,” Peters said. It began to write.

‘As I was on my way home, this Prof. Stephen was too close to my hole and as I was running away, he grabbed me by my tail and squeezed me so that I almost died.’

“Do you see Mr. Stephen in court today?” Peters asked.

‘Yes, he is right over there.’ The rat pointed at me with it’s weird tiny finger.

“Did you do anything to cause Mr. Stephen to attempt murder on you?”

‘Hardly. I bit him because I felt threatened.’

“And why did you feel threatened?”

‘He was angry, much bigger than me, and too close to my house than I found comfortable.’

“What happened after the attempted murder?”

‘Well, Prof. Peters made him drop me. He offered to help me in court and I spent the next week living in a tree in fear of Prof. Stephen’s return.’

“So after the incident, you began to fear Mr. Stephen?”

‘I feared him the second I met that man.’

“And after the incident, have you felt any pain?”

‘Yes, the man may have dislocated my arm, and it will flare up in pain every now and then.’

“Thank you. No further questions, My Lord.” The last part was spoken to the judge and Peters sat down.

I don’t remember much of what happened after Henry was questioned. I do believe my counsel cross-examined him, and then the second witness, who was a remaining student of mine, was called on to give her evidence. My counsel cross-examined her, too. Finally, I was called on to speak.

“Do you swear that the evidence you shall give shall be the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth so help you God?” the clerk now asked me.

“I do,” I said.

“Please state your full name and spell your last name for the record.”

“Haris Stephen, S-T-E-P-H-E-N.”

“You may be seated,” the judge said. I sat.

“How many years have you been teaching at X University?” My counsel, Mr. Patel, asked me. I should not give the name of the university I taught at.

“I have taught at X University for four years.”

“Has any incident like this happened since you began teaching?”

“Not as far as I’m aware.”

“Why were you angry on the evening of the incident?”

“Because I was late to work and when I finally arrived, very few students of mine had remained.”

“And why did you try to kill the rat upon being bitten?”

“I am very dedicated to my job and was not aware that rats were allowed in the school, so I ought to have gotten rid of it.”

“Where did Mr. Watts bite you?”

“On my shin.”

“Was the bite infected and did it leave any marks?”

“The bite was not infected, but left a faint mark.”

“Does it still cause you any pain?”

“It did for the first three days following the incident, but not anymore.”

“No further questions.” Mr. Patel sat down.

“Does the plaintiff wish to cross-examine this witness?” the judge asked.

“Yes, my Lord. Have you seen any rats besides Mr. Watts throughout your four years teaching?” Peters asked.

“Other than the ones being used in the science department, I have not.”

"And you still felt it was fine for you to murder a resident of the school?"

"I did not know he was a resident at the time."

"Have you ever heard of any other professor attempting such a crime?"

"I have not."

"Would you have still tried such a thing if you weren't already angry that evening?"

"Yes, so long as I was not aware of his residing there."

“But you still believe it is fine if you murder a rat?”

“Yes, they are pests and can cause disease. Rats in the university would ruin it’s image.”

He announced that his cross-examination was complete.

And finally, Alexander, the talkative neighbor was called on. Again, I had not paid much attention to what was said but I do know that he was asked if I had ever acted cruelly towards an innocent creature during the entire time he had known me (nine years), to which he replied he once saw me catch a butterfly and tear off it's wings and antennae. I do not remember doing this, and therefore cannot defend my actions. But, if I ever had done such a thing, I deeply regret it.

After Alexander was questioned by Patel, Peters had cross-examined him, too. The only thing I had remembered by the end of it was that I did not look innocent in the slightest.

My case as the defendant had been completed and Peters and Patel gave the closing statements.

The rat wanted me behind bars for at least 6 months, followed by some time in anger management. Mr. Patel countered with only one month of jail time, or anger management, but not both. The jury went into the jury room and the judge went into his chambers. I sat silently as I waited for my verdict.

IV

The judge returned about half an hour later.

“Mister Reid, has the jury reached a verdict?” the judge asked.

“They have, my Lord.”

The sheriff brought the jury in upon being told to do so.

The clerk asked the foreperson if they reached a verdict, to which they replied that they did.

“Did you find the defendant, Haris Stephen, guilty or not guilty of the trauma and injuries sustained by the plaintiff, Henry Watts?”

“We find the defendant, Haris Stephen, guilty of the trauma and injuries sustained by the plaintiff, Henry Watts.”

And all thanks to that rat, I lost my job and spent the next six months in prison and the following six months in anger management. I wasn’t able to return to my job until a year after that, and taught at a different university, far away from the rat and Peters. One would expect me to have learned my lesson, but I have not! Instead, I killed every rat I’ve come across upon sight, only I never ended up in court again.

My Suitors

My mother loved the guy. He would make the perfect son-in-law. Our mother became fast friends. My father loved the guy. "He has character," he said after first meeting him. So did my sister, my brother and family friends who knew him.

He was a soft-spoken, polite, respectable 23-year-old from a respectable family, with a bachelor's degree from a respectable university, a stable job and a house in the suburbs, to boot. I had never seen the guy or anyone in his family when one Saturday afternoon out of the blue, his mother called my mother and arranged a late afternoon visit to hour house. My mom knew what was up.

The woman had asked plenty of questions about me, and before hanging up the phone, she added, "Make sure Nagis jan is home too."

The next day, his mother, sister, and two aunts showed up at our door to give me the once over. By this point, I was 22 years old and had gone through this process for 6 years already. It always ended the same way: one of my parents would call one of the guy's parents on the telephone a few days later and gracefully decline. "She is too young," or "she wants to continue her education," were frequently relied upon when their answers and mine were "No."

For my parents, the reason was usually that the family culture did not quite mesh with ours, or the guy was not educated enough. For me, the reasons were more nebulous: for some reason or other, I did not find him attractive, or there was not a spark. I figured that since my family was handling the practical things, I could spend my time looking for those elusive sparks. Each time though, with the guy's siblings and parents flanked around him, and mine flanked around me, all awkwardly making small talk in my family's living room, it's not hard to understand why sparks were the last thing on my mind, and possibly his.

Before we would get to the phase of sweaty-palms and averting of the eyes, when the guy came to our house, there was what I call the matriarch test. And so, his mother, aunts, and sister were sitting in our living room, chatting it up with my parents, staring at me for intervals too long for comfort. They would ask general questions about my likes and dislikes. It was worse than a job interview.

In high school, my non-Afghan friends thought it was very exotic and romantic. In college, they just thought it was strange. I agreed. I enjoyed the attention when I was younger. By now, it was a chore, and I knew how it would end when my parents and I concurrently disapproved of the guy: "She is too young," or "She wants to continue her education."

The next evening, his mother called my mother, offering gracious compliments of our family and me. I guess I passed the matriarch test. By the looks of things, I knew my parents would not flash the stop sign just yet, and maybe I was just a little curious too. Besides, how could I end up with an Afghan if I do not give any of them a chance?

Though I had gone through with this plenty of times before, I was nervous. My mother and father both glanced me up and down, and noddingly approved of my outfit: a knee-length summer dress. Somehow, my usual slacks or jeans did not seem appropriate. A skirt or dress seemed right. From my bedroom window; I saw a black Mercedes pull into our driveway. The mom got out, the sister got out, the dad got out, and the guy in the driver's seat got out. Before they rang the bell, his dad looked him over, straightened his tie, and gave him a sympathetic smile. He was nervous too. I think it was his first time.

I came downstairs and was introduced to the young man. He shook my hand: sweaty palms and averted eyes. I still do not know where he could have possibly known me. The story was that he saw me at a friend's party. I did not buy it. I would guess that his mother or aunt saw a picture of me in someone's photo album and inquired. Next thing you know, they are at our house, and it is phase two.

They sat down, and I escaped into the kitchen where my mom had gone to make tea. She had me serve them. I remembered one time when some other strangers came by, and I did not know their purpose. I chatted with the guy and his sister the whole time. I did not think of it because he looked so much older than me. I was trying to be friendly. They were not sure what to make of it.

I imagine they took it as eagerness and were surprised to hear the next day, "She wants to continue her education." After they left, my sister teased me about it for days. This time, I did not mistake it for a casual visit.

Like Jehovah's Witnesses, they had come on Sunday afternoon to recruit me to their team. I knew to never let the Jehovah's Witnesses inside the house, but unfortunately, my parents' Afghan hospitality got the better of them, and many an afternoon was spent with the Jehovah's Witnesses debating whether Jesus was God's son or His messenger.

"Son."

"Messenger."

"Thanks for inviting us in. We will drop by again soon."

This process was only slightly less distasteful. After about an hour of awkwardness that stretched out forever, they finally got up to leave. And ultimately, I have the veto power in this whole deal.

After one more awkward, uneasy visit, I opted to exercise my veto power. Visit number three was already scheduled, and my mom had images of wedding gowns and sweet-faced grandchildren dancing in her head. I want to say "no."

I said. "I do not like him."

"But why? He is such a nice boy. It is such a nice family. He is in love with you", they said.

"There was no spark whatsoever."

"But you thought there might be a spark last time," my sister said.

"Nope, I was wrong. No spark."

"It will come later when you are married," my mother added.

I was not willing to take the risk. Tell them, "I am too young."

"But you are not. He is your age."

Tell them, "I want to continue my education."

"But you are in your last year of college."

Tell them, "I do not like him."

"But you will grow to love him. I know you will."

They thought this guy was perfect for me, only I could not see that yet. It was like my parent's conversations with the Jehovah's Witnesses. We were at a stalemate. We could not see eye to eye but tried to stay cordial. After all, everyone involved wanted what was best for me.

Like the debates over faith, this required a leap of faith in one direction or the other. My parents leaped one way. I jumped the other way. I said a decisive "no." They were deeply disappointed. They thought I made a huge mistake, and somewhere in their minds, they realized that I had leaped in a different direction from them. Their hearts were sore for it.

The episode was pivotal for my family and me. It was the first time we had come to such a crossroad, and for better or worse, our first step into a new phase in our relationship. For me, that was the day I decided to take the reins on my life. Talabgary or proposal was not going to work for me. It did not make sense in the context of my life. I was adamant. I had to find someone on my terms.

For my parents, that was the day I snatched away a part of their parental authority and rejected their religious and cultural values. They saw me sliding down the slippery slope of "Americanization," and they shook their heads in dismay.

"She will choose someone for herself," my mother began to tell suitors' mothers on the phone in the most incredulous voice.

That was three years ago. We navigated our way through some rough times since then.

First, they did not talk to me. Then, we spoke to one another, but relations were strained. I moved out of my parent's home. We made up. We argued. Relations were still strained.

Eventually, my parents and I came to an impasse in this cultural tug of war.

Just as my parents and the Jehovah's Witnesses will never see eye to eye, and neither side will give up its vision of truth, neither will my parents, and I see eye to eye on what our respective roles should be in each other's lives and society. We struggle with this.

Sometimes we confront one another, and sometimes we avoid the subject. The difference, I hope, is that we love one another enough to take the leap to listen and respect, not just try to convert one another.

I'm looking at individual health insurance plans. All of them say they have a deductable of $500 - $5000. I'm reading the plan overview and it's explaining what the plan covers. It says prescriptions are covered after deductible, office visits are covered after deductible, and so on. Does this mean if a plan has a $5000 deductible that the health insurance company will not cover anything until after I've paid $5000 out of pocket on healthcare? Does that mean that if I had to go to the emergency room i'd have to pay for it myself until I've paid up to $5000? I'm really confused. I want to get temporary health coverage, but I don't see what the point is if I'm going to have to pay out of pocket anyways. Does anyone know how this deductible stuff works? I know there are a lot of things to take into consideration when getting insurance quotes and all but I was on craigslist and I found a nice little 2005 Audi A4 1.8t and I wanted to get an idea of insurance. I know that it is considered a luxury sedan and its foreign from Germany so those are going to make it more expensive. It puts out around 170hp and 160 trq. The car has great crash test ratings too. Seller is asking a little under $6000 and I don't know how many miles are on it yet. Other things to consider are that im only 19 so it would go under my fathers name. I got into a car accident a week ago, a truck driver backed into me while I was just stopped at a stop sign. He admitted it was his fault, I had witnesses that supported my story, and his insurance is willing to pay me, BUT since my car is a 1996 Corrolla with almost 200,000 miles on it, the cost of repairing the hood and fenders and everything exceeded the amount my car is worth. Their estimator said the amount of damage is about $2500, so they consider it totaled. Now the choices they are giving me are that they'll take the car and give me $1700 (which won't be enough to get another car), or let me keep the car and give me $1200 (which won't be enough to repair it).
