fresh Aun shenanigans

Once again appreciating Aun for putting at least thai subs so it's possible to translate with apps / dictionary. But was hard this time to make sense of it. Since some words have no direct translation and others have like 4 different meanings…

Bass Practice 05/10/24

Again for this session I started off with Collector and managed to play at 135bpm quite comfotably. At 143bpm I was a bit inaccuarte and achey so I stopped there.

Next I practiced Californication and my pinky definately has gotten stronger. I still buzz a bit in the verse, but there is an improvement in the pre-chorus which is good. Hopefully next time I can aim to go no buzz and not miss the strings when I pick them. Just mind the sniffing and filled up laundry basket lmao.

Next I managed to play 1981 at 135bpm. The last two bars before the chorus need to be clearer with the little thingy thing. I enjoy attempting to play it though:) I need to press my fingers harder when I'm going fast because my fingers barely press on the strings and sort of glide across, which will be a getting used to the difference between a bass and a guitar I guess. I did take a video of 1981, but I can't put two videos in one post and I can't be bothered to do a separate post for it so I'll show my progress after I've gotten Californication down.

Look, if you are not interested in certain material, just don’t adapt it! If you are only okay with it after changing around everything that makes it itself, you are not interested in adapting it! And just because something has vampires, witches and spirits in it, does not mean it is okay to make it historical inaccuarte. If a novel features a white male plantation- and slave-owner in New Orleans as its main character, you only have to do one thing: You cast a while male for this part. You can change up all the other characters ethnicity if you must, but you can’t change this one. I don’t care how brilliant the actor is.

“Outlander” did cast a Scottish White Male for Jamie Fraser and and did cast all the other roles as written in the books as well, and no one claimed the show was racist for it.

If this about wanted to distinguish yourself from the movie, you could have make Lestat in a POC, granted that makes no sense with his backstory, but changing up that would have made more sense than changing up Louis’. Or how about changing the angelic blonde five year old into a little back girl? That would have actually made sense. Or Armand, who again, has a backstory going against it, but I doubt this “adaption” will ever go into the whole Russian Icon Painter/Rennaissance Boy-Storyarc.

Or a crazy idea, take the modern day reporter, who has no backstory going against casting him a man of color.

But no, appearantly it was to much to ask for them to go and cast a French or Louisina white male actor for Louis de Point du Lac.

And no, there is no excuse, because Louis constantly claims the reason Lestat turned him was that he wanted the Plantation. And then moved in with his blind father. There is no way this would work with a illgetimate non-white son of the former owner, who for some reason inherits the Plantation and then lets a white stranger move in with him.

And if they are are not interested in this part of the story, but are jumping right in with Claudia instead, there is no point in doing a televions version of the book. And if they are changing Louis backstory so much that non of this is left anymore, they are not interested in the book at all, so again my point: Just don’t do it, if you don’t care about the story you are adapting.

Dude if a school is genuinely rich they'd have one to one laptops. also just remembered that book has a shitty probably racist "mom friend" character. wait wtf apparently it's a total ripoff of a manga. well that explains why the MC felt like an overdramatic anime stereotype. fckd up tho.

I added a whole rant about how private school kids are so privileged they write so many books abt private school even though 90%+ of americans go to public school cuz theyre like 60% of ppl at elite colleges and they write sooo much abt scholarship students I've got a few guesses why (rich ppl love saving someone who perfectly adopts their culture perhaps thus the authors are darlings and then non-poor background authors want to be relatable even tho going to private school at all is so crazy unrelatable to normal people) blah blah blah well it got lost cuz mobile doesnt autosave

But i still need to rant abt the follow up topic trying together private school privilege and plagarising asians and plagarising in general and that's Yellowface. Yall know Yellowface right, the book abt a white yale grad who steals an asian yale grad's book cuz she died right after graduation. Well 1. The author is a yale grad and ive seen the book described as a strange exercise in self-vicitimzation. And as an asian american her books are one of the main reasons i feel like asian "american" fantasy has gone to shit (not that it really existed...) and is all abt asia just enforcing orientalism and exoticfication and "we have no place history culture" in america. Thats one of the criticisms she proxy defends herself from in the book btw that as an AA she shouldbt write abt China as if she has the same authority someone living in China does 2. The "yale grad dies right after graduation and gets published posthumously" thing actually happened!! With a white girl and none of the book stealing plot but its still crazy similar cuz i think it was a car crash for both of them. anyways said real girl is from a town i know ppl in and they told me they were confused why she wasnt a "famous graduate" of their high school well it turns out she was a private school kid!! They're everywhere!! Just not among us masses of the 90+%...

Also fuck the chandler legacies for the aphobia tho i acknowledge despite reading the book making me realize how crazy popular private school books are that author was a genuine scholarship kid from a difficult background! So i dont want to erase the struggle scholarship kids go through even tho they come out the other side super privledged. And while i despise his aphobia i appreciate that he actually set the story DURING HIS TEENAGE YEARS SO HE COULD WRITE THE KIND OF CULTURE ABT QUEERNESS HE UNDERSTOOD AND NOT HAVE IT BE INACCUARTE . tho it still contributes to the "adults don't actually want to write FOR teens or care about understanding the modern world and modern teenhood" thing.

speaking of queer asian representation (east but also south!) tho i finished ophelia after all today (it REALLY sucked me in!!) and wesley cho my guyyyyy the part about his parents being over the top supportive <33333 honestly i feel like sammie was written more as a jerk than he was 'supposed' to be or something like he COULD have been my favorite but the author wouldn't let him. also it's subtle but im pretty sure agatha is alloaro?? slayyy. also also. LOVED Ophelia's mixed race portrayal it felt so freaking real to me and also not overly whiny like mixed-race books have felt to me in the past.

but also. @/authors u guys. you HAVE to start setting your books in the year you wrote them because omg it started off feeling so accurate to modern teen life but then the homophobia kicked in like helloooo this is so mid-2010s or earlier?? yet another L for queer YA feeling like adult authors just wanna rehash their teen years without actually setting their book during those exact years.
