Leif waited until he was certain Glenn held onto Gorm's attention. He wasn't exactly able to have the whisper quiet, uncomplicated sneak-in like he hoped. There was a small amount of noise from him as he climbed through a window — evidently it wasn't enough to give him away.

Now came the horror of creeping to where the man kept his tomes. They weren't on some neat shelving, they were piled high, spilled this way and that, words scattered from one corner of the room to the other. Gods have mercy on him...

Gorm frowned deeper. Civilised? That was rich, coming from one of Ebbe's muscle heads. "Have you been sent here to question my capabilities? It has barely been hours, boy!"

He wasn't one to shoot the messenger, but this one was off to a poor start. Still, he was likely pressured by Ebbe and higher command to get updates on the matter, he might have felt more sympathetic for the young man if he didn't keep stomping his foot right into the shit. Was he trying to insult him?

"That is how a map works." Gorm agreed, looking every bit as ruffled as he felt. Though he couldn't grasp onto the conversation. One moment the warrior spoke of a ship without navigation, the next he asked about the likelihood of scurvy.

Honestly, it was as though the young man were sent to purely waste his time.

"Young man, the longer you keep me from my work, the longer Ebbe will be without his map. To map out the land is a task of vital importance — without a map, a man may become lost. However, with an incorrect map, he most certainly will become lost. Understand? I will not hurry this task, because doing so will recklessly endanger the lives that are sent to task with it. Which could very well include you."

A shake of his head, chased by a weary sigh and Gorm was straightening his aching back with a shift of posture. "As for scurvy, the affliction is not mutually exclusive with maritime voyages. The lack of fresh fruit and vegetables could very well mean our population will suffer this condition if steps aren't taken to remedy the supply in our food chain. Perhaps that is the reason for Ebbe's interest abroad, mh? There may be a diplomatic bone in his body that seeks an alliance with the Queen of Flowers." He chuckled at his own sentence. Even the young man would understand that certainly was not the case. "Now, if we're quite done here, I have a mountain of work to see to."

Man.

He actually wished Leif would wash his clothes for once.

Glenn was glad he didn't have to hide a grin as Leif stomped off to supposedly do his laundry. It looked like a victory for him either way.

Though now came the more interesting part - and it already started out strange.

How in the Claw's grand name had this guy known he was coming? For a moment that made Glenn hesitant. Though his steps only slowed for a bit, before he picked them up again.

"Hey now. Let's keep this simple and civilized.", was the first thing that sprung to Glenn's mind. He held his hands up a little, feigning defeat. He might be one of Ironhand's warriors, but Glenn wasn't one to abuse that small bit of power it granted him. He wouldn't simple storm into an old man's home and demand some... map. For whatever.

What the hell was Ebbe doing and demanding of the old scholar?

Well, he couldn't act like he had no clue. Walking up right to Gorm, Glenn stood there with his arms crossed, looking pretty confident for a man who had no clue what he was about say.

"You know what he said. He needs that map. It is important. And you know, he places all his faith and trust in you... I mean, you have so many tomes, books, scriptures. Surely a map can't eb beyond your capabilities?"

That all sounded a little too threateningly, didn't it?

"Ebbe chose you for this important task - we just need regular information about how far along it is. You know of the importance, right? The map with all the paths. And the villages, towns. The mountains and sea."

Now he was just guessing, though nodding throughout his entire summary. It was maybe a little too much guessing... and yet he needed to create time for Leif. It probably was best to give Gorm little chance to reply.

"Without a map, we lack all the orientation... and don't you know what happens then? It's like that tale of the old ship out at sea when there was an entire three moons without the nightsky being visible. No stars, no navigation. I heard the entire crew went crazy because they were lost for that long and all hope was dwindling. It is said to have been like scurvy for the soul. Speaking of which - do you think it possible that there could be scurvy on land? I mean, it's no secret we currently... lack a little more of the food around and we need to actually know that."

It reminds me of something that went semi-viral in the Irish-speaking Twittersphere like 5 years ago.

Some racist US cop presumably of Irish origin wanted to make a shirt in Irish saying "Blue Lives Matter", which is basically a phrase that cops in the US use to discredit the Black Lives Matter movement.

Now there's a lot of ambiguity and cultural meaning in the phrase. Perhaps you could translate it as "Saoil gormach is iad tábhachtach"- "blue lives are important" because, if I'm correct (I could be wrong, I'm not actually fluent), there's not a word like "matter" in that exact meaning and context in Irish. (Though a "blue" person can also refer to a Black person in Irish (it's a long story). So perhaps it wouldnt work at all.)

But anyway he translated each word individually.

And what he got was "Gorm conaí abhar". A nonsense statement.

"Blue" translated somewhat right as "gorm", though as an abstract noun, not as an adjective.

"Lives" translated to "conaí" which means lives as in like"he lives in a house".

"Matter" translated to "abhar" which means subject.

So it translated roughly to say "blue inhabits subject". Except even more grammatically incorrect, with none of the markers of a sentence in Irish.

Randomly thinking of that time when I got a poorly translated spam email.

The greeting "We hope this email finds you well" doesn't exist in German, we'd rather say "We hope you're doing well".

I think they struggled with the meaning of words during translation. They took the meaning of "find" as in "think/having an opinion" and "well" as in good, so it would be "We hope this email finds you good"...... If you "find something good" in German ("etwas gut finden"), you like it.

So somehow "We hope you're well" was translated to "We hope this email likes you" 🤔

And my first thought was "Uhm, no, I'm afraid this email hates me" 😂

Edit: No, actually it was "We wish that this mail finds you good", I just checked.

In lieu of the “summary” for the series, which is just a book quote, here are the summaries for the two fics:

Multitude of One (G, MCU, 4,277 words)

Summary: "So was I," his soulmate would tell him one day, and what it would mean was that they loved him.

Leaving Promises Against Your Skin (G, MCU, 18,611 words)

Summary: “Someday, someone will choose you, Tony,” his mother had said, her hands back to cupping his. “And no one, not your father, not anyone, can ever take that from you.”

Notes: I wish I could change the name of the series because it doesn’t fit completely, but oh well! This series was grueling to write, but it was by far the most rewarding because I didn’t think I could do it. Even if there are things I wish I could fix (I think that way about almost every fic I write), I’m proud of what I accomplished. I wrote the story I wanted to write and did something I never thought I could. I felt like I was running a marathon and at the end, that level of euphoria was probably the closest I’ll get to a runner’s high. I want to feel that again.

Summary: There was no reason to keep the phone, not when Tony didn't have his, not when Tony was gone and all keeping it would do was hurt him, but Steve held onto it anyway.

Summary: He hadn't allowed himself to dream of this, of Tony returning to him. Not when he had lost so much. Not when dreaming of the impossible would destroy him. But Tony was here, and for the first time since Thanos had wiped out half of the universe, Steve felt hope. Notes: After watching IW, I thought I’d have the same dry spell as I did after AoU. I didn’t think I had anything to write about, but it ended up being my most prolific era! I don’t know why or I do, but I don’t have the space to talk about it here and I’m not sure I can express myself accurately. There’s something about unspeakable loss sweeping you out to sea, making everything else before both insignificant and magnified. Every regret, every love. When you’re so lucky so as to hold onto or regain something you lost, there’s so much power in that love and hope even when you’re not sure things will ever be okay again.

I have two other fics that are companion pieces to each other but not officially so I’ll leave them off! In case you’re wondering, they’re “Thunder Hurried Slow” and “Leaving You Forward.”

Notes: The clear winner when it comes to hits, kudos, and comments, but when it comes to bookmarks, the sequel, LPAYS, surpasses MoO in numbers. I love soulmate fics, but I wasn’t sure what to write (other than that one soulmate fic that I’ve been trying to write since 2014 which hasn’t happened yet). I read some angsty CW soulmate fics, and then this idea struck me because I loved them, but I wanted to see something different.

I wanted to explore the idea of idealization and romanticization of a soul mark, especially when your assumptions of its meaning turn out to be completely incorrect, and the significance of soulmates. Is your soulmate important because you love them, or do you love them because they’re your soulmate? What happens if you can’t see who they are, even if they’re in front of you the whole time, and fail them because you’re so focused on the idea of them? I also wanted to try and see if I could bring the iconic 616 “It wasn’t worth it” line to the MCU in a way that made it organic to the universe here. Again, shoutout to the fics I read before this idea burst into my head, specifically “Zugzwang” by the great Woad.

Actual worst part of writing:

Most of the time, I know how the story begins and ends, but I don’t know how to get from A to C. Sometimes I have fragments in between, but I don’t know how to connect them! I get bogged down in plot holes or issues I don’t know how to fix and I get stuck for a long time. 

How you choose your titles:

Everyone moans about coming up with titles—and understandably so, as it’s the worst when you can’t come up with one—but oddly enough, titles come really easily to me. They just...float to the surface of my mind. In some cases, they’re there before I start writing. Other times, when I start and I’m at the beginning of the story. It’s almost like I feel the story/feel the titles as though I’m searching for the story’s true name which sounds SO obnoxiously pretentious lolsdkfjdas, but that’s the only way I can explain it. It’s almost a sensory experience for me. They have to be right (there’s this moment where it feels right, whether it’s this quiet recognition or a “YES! That’s it” eureka moment) and there has to be a meaning behind them that explains what the story is about in some way. Otherwise, I get stuck. There are a few titles that I’m not particularly fond of because nothing really came to me, but I had to go with what I came up with due to time constraints. They still rub me the wrong way when I look at them.

Do you outline:

I usually know the start and end of a story before I write, and most of my stories are short enough so that means I don’t have to outline. Longer stories, though...I probably need to outline. That’s where I struggle and why I haven’t written anything really over 6k other than LPAYS (I was a mess writing it, but I can go into that separately if anyone’s interested). :’) I’d say that I half plot and half fly by the seat of my pants; I leave enough room on a bare-bones outline in my head to improvise.

I’m good at atmosphere and rhythm although the latter has become less of a thing over the years as I started writing longer stuff. But still! 

Tangential opinion:

This can be difficult to believe and it can take time (I certainly didn’t start out like this in my first fandom pre-Marvel), but honestly, write for yourself and your friends and/or write for yourself without expectations on how you’ll be received. I would say write for yourself first and foremost, but you’re in fandom because you want to be part of a community so I’m not going to say to write for yourself only unless you want to. When you find a close group of a few friends, you’ll realize that the most important thing is you guys having fun and everything else is a nice surprise—or if you’re more of a lurker, then it’s nice just seeing a few people respond to you especially if you start to see it’s the same few people the more you write. A lot of the times, they become the people you befriend too.

I am Gorm. I was one one of Team Plasma’s Seven Sages. I didn’t realize how far away Mahogany Town was from Cianwood City. Kadabra’s teleportation does come in handy. I’ve learned from reading your blog that the Pokedex is often unreliable and sometimes outright incorrect, but it says that Alakazam has an IQ of 5,000. Is that true? Is Kadabra about that smart?

IQ tests don't really work on Pokemon, they can't read or write. Even Kadabra can't pick up a pencil and take a test.

They are considered to be the most intelligent species of Pokemon, however! So it's an exaggeration, but not by much

Ghetsis is well into his 60′s approximately--which honestly, according to my father’s nurses and such, wasn’t that old.  Nonetheless, the guy’s had two severe psychological breakdowns resulting in stress-induced strokes.  A stroke cuts off the oxygen to parts of your brain and when that part eventually suffocates or is otherwise heavily damaged from lack of oxygen, I’m sure you can imagine what that’ll do to somebody’s body let alone someone’s brain.

On top of that, there’s the dementia.  That’s why he perceived Brett as a hallucination at first--Brett was out of place in an otherwise normal setting, a child he didn’t recognize in his hiding place.  Normally the Shadow Triad prevent any intruders or threats from getting anywhere near the hideaway, assuming one even stumbles into the magic slip space that puts you on the same plane of existence as it in the first place.  So.  Strange child where a strange child would, logically, not be?  Probably a hallucination.

(A lot of rambling under the cut, talk of mental illness, physical illness, disability, real life parental death. . .just a lot of stuff, probably a lot of nonsense, some of it a mite personal as a former caretaker. I’d’ve put icons in to space things out but.  I’m kinda tired after writing all of this lmao also I have to fast for a thing tomorrow so I’m just gonna. Head off once I post this and gets oem rest.TL;DR: google ‘symptoms of dementia’ and ‘effects of stroke’ and you’ll get a good idea of Ghetsis’s mental state at any given point in time.)

At least a small child is the least of his hallucinations.  He has them now and then, or otherwise misperceives reality or misspeaks about his perceptions, and they can vary from little things to big things.  They’re usually nothing major--something is there that isn’t or he hears sounds that aren’t real.  Sometimes he sees people or his mind misproccesses one person or thing as another(sometimes he refers to the Shadow Triad as N, Anthea, and Concordia for example) and he just kinda rolls with it sometimes.

Other times he tries to ignore it until it goes away or tries to ‘fix it’ one way or another. Major things are more along the lines of that he’s displaced from where he actually is, is floating, his environment is drastically changing--stuff that majorly impacts his ability to proceed.  But it’s usually like.  Galvantula crawling on him or voices and things like that.  Stuff that you might notice him responding to, but that can be dismissed or that he shrugs off.

If he hallucinates something detailed and realizes it(because, y’know, it doesn’t make sense, for example,) he usually just rolls with it until it ends--his mind doesn’t take well to being ignored or dismissed and can ratchet up the awful if it isn’t acknowledged, hence why he decided ‘well, there’s a hallucination child here, i’d better just acknowledge him’ lol.

In general, Ghetsis’s memory is not good.  Oftentimes it’s inconsistent--sometimes he remembers some things but not others, sometimes he remembers everything, sometimes he doesn’t even know who he is.  Now and then he’ll remember things in one state of mind, forget them in another, and if he goes back to the previous state of mind or a different one, he has no problem remembering the previous thing.  But he has no control over this.  While he mostly remembers more recent years events, he might struggle with some before them--or he might randomly drop one memory or process or another.

Sometimes these memory lapses result in things like not remembering what year it is and as such not knowing how old he is.  He may interpret himself as being younger because his mind just. . .receded back to that point in his understanding.  If you ask him where he is, he might say he’s at the Harmonia Estate even though that’s completely off base.  He’ll give you a radically incorrect number if asked for his age.  He’ll say he has no children.  He won’t remember what Team Plasma is.

Sometimes his mind reconciles things like his height in relation to other people and things and he doesn’t question them at all.  For example, he could see N and his mind says ‘that’s Natural. That’s your son.’ but rather than ‘he’s in his early 20′s. he’s the hero of ideals. he betrayed you. he abandoned you. you hate him. you miss him. you wish you had your son back’ his process says ‘he’s seven years old. he’s just learning to read. he learned to do a cartwheel yesterday. he’s having a hard time with the studies Gorm is going through with him, but for now he’s okay with the others. He falls down everytime he gets on his skateboard but he always laughs and gets back on it’ and he’ll treat N as though he’s a child.  He’ll acknowledge that N is getting big or getting heavy if he has to acknowledge his appearance, but his mind’ll just kinda.  Make that make sense to him.

There’s not really any way to snap him out of this--sometimes he can be led back to a proper psychological state, other times you’ve just gotta wait it out.  Ideally, let him sleep and he’ll be better when he wakes up.

There are days where he’s in clearly awful condition.  Sometimes he can’t talk or acknowledge anything, just completely unresponsive.  Other times it seems like nothing was ever wrong with his mind in the first place.

As you can imagine, that’s mostly just processing things. . .his already horrifically inconsistent personality that he changes to befit the situation and person he’s speaking to is now even more inconsistent and he’s got little to no control over it.  Oftentimes he’ll be himself to some degree.  Other times he might be horrifically depressed or lost and reclusive or sorry and miserable. . .sometimes he’ll be emotional and wild--and he’ll lash out aggressively if anybody tries to help him, even if he clearly needs it.  He might not remember his interests or his relationships with people or be able to focus. . .he’s all over the place, although I’m still kinda tentative about portraying it.

A lot of it is inspired by my dad and his condition when he was alive and I was taking care of him. So while sometimes I may laugh at it sometimes or occasionally use it for comedic effect, honestly part of me does want to portray a lot of these struggles he has realistically--but I’m also a very ‘laugh at everything because what else are you gonna do be miserable all the time?’ type of person(or i try to be--I find it important to see the comedy in everything because honestly life is ridiculous and there’s no reason not to laugh at it or enjoy it as long as you also accept the severity of it) and I worry I’d portray something too comically or be interpreted as making a joke even when I’m not.

. . .But, yeah, Ghetsis’s brain is fucked up basically.  Look up what happens to stroke or seizure patients and the effects of dementia and you’ll get a decent grasp of what it’s like to be my Ghetsis in the present day.

Despite it all, he’s still Ghetsis. . .but between age and arrogance and madness, he’s lost a lot of his ability to give a fuck and he just.  Does whatever he wants within his ability. Boundaries? Filters?  Often completely absent.  So sometimes he’s Ghetsis--master manipulator, King in personality and intentions, regal and serious and calm and strategic and careful and classy and elegant and deceptive--and sometimes he’s Ghetsis--Professional Fuck-Upper of Shit who constantly has Break My Stride by Matthew Wilder playing in his own head who just does whatever and exists to piss people off and have fun.  But the thing is?  Ghetsis has always been somebody even his closest people couldn’t tell the personality of.  What he’s like, who he is, it escaped even the sages.  It escaped everybody that this man was evil for literal years.

So in a weird way, he’s exactly the same. . .just a little more extreme and spiteful. Normally he’s a liar because it helps him fit smoothly into society without suspicion, but now sometimes he’s brutally honest and you realize how disturbed he is, how fucked what happens in his head is.

. . . . . .And yet.  He’s bounced back from so many things before.  He’s been a radically confusing and difficult and inconsistent person before.

Sometimes you can’t help but think ‘this is a trick too.’ 

Either way. . .he’s a mess.  You’ll almost always still be able to see that he’s Ghetsis in his thoughts and actions and words, but sometimes he’s. . .different. Sometimes that’s just Extra Ghetsis, and sometimes you see what’s beneath the Narcissism and he cries and apologizes and struggles and lets himself be helped and asks for help and says he just wanted to help let him help how can he help he doesn’t want to be useless he doesn’t want to be broken let him prove he exists and functions even if it’s just to himself.  Better yet, let him die. He can’t live like this anymore. He’s not living. He hasn’t been living for years, he’s a broken, worthless entity and he just doesn’t want to be anymore. Those’re still rare sides of him to see--you’re more likely to get completely unresponsive, mute, dissociative, confused old man type Ghetsis than self-loathing Ghetsis who regrets his actions and who he is and has been and what he’s done.

But yeah.  Ghetsis’s mental state is.  Not great! It’s much worse than he lets on most of the time! His physical state is pretty poor, too, although that varies too.  Some days he can walk without assistance, some days he needs his cane, a walker, a wheelchair, some days he’s bedbound completely and if he tries to use his leg(s) he’ll just wind up falling down.  Sometimes he can speak with little to no problem, sometimes he can’t do anything but mutter nonsensically, sometimes he can’t even make sounds.  He’s just. . .not well.  But somehow he’s still recovering.  One could suppose it’s simply because he’s Ghetsis and he’s always been a little. . .powerful. Ethereal. Magical. Special. A cut above the rest.

Like my dad, he’s been told or had his caretakers told many, many times he probably wouldn’t make it more than a few years, months, weeks, he’d be lucky if he lived through the night.

But Yveltal be damned, he’s still here.

And he’s gonna be here for a while, I imagine.

If he gets his way, he’ll be here forever.

OUAT Season 1 Inconsistencies

First, I wanna say that I’m not making this post with the intention of ruining anyone’s opinion on the quality of OUAT’s first season. I’m posting this list of the inconsistencies I noticed because I’m talking about inconsistencies in my overview of the season and I want people to know what I’m referring to. Some of these things are really small and insignificant and immediately fade when you look at the big picture. It’s just that nitpicking and perfectionism are in my nature and I can’t help but notice these things (of course, that doesn’t mean that I haven’t missed anything that happened on the show no matter consistent or not). And there are a few that are really annoying and could probably classify as plot holes. If you don’t want even the smallest detail that’s not in its place pointed out to you, then you should probably skip this post. With that said, here’s the list:

1x01

When Regina entered, all of the guests were too scared to even look at her and averted their eyes. Some even turned their backs to her. That is never addressed ever again.

“She poisoned an apple because she thought I was prettier than her.” - That’s not true even though we don’t know that yet. It gets debunked in the next episode when Regina says “What I loved most died because of Snow White”.

“The Queen has created a powerful curse.” - That is also proven incorrect in the next episode.

The whole thing with the wardrobe made zero sense to me. Even Regina who cast the Curse did not know where it would take them. How were they certain that the wardrobe would transport Emma to the same land where the Curse would take them?

How does an entire world’s population fit into a small town in Maine? Maybe Regina killed so many people that it became possible. Please, excuse my horrible sense of humor.

Regina ripping her father’s heart out. That was the one and only time when ripping the heart out immediately caused the person to die.

Snow wanted to run away but she also wanted to use the fairy dust on Regina to get rid of her but the two things contradict each other. If she had used the fairy dust, there would’ve been no point in running away because the kingdom would’ve been hers once again. So why do both?

Snow knew that she ruined Regina’s life but in 1x21 she didn’t know Daniel was dead.

Ella called David James but by that time they should have already learned that he was actually David and only pretended to be his brother.

Emma told Ashley that she had Henry when she was 18 but that’s not true. Henry is born on 15 August 2001. Emma is born on 22 October 1983. So she became 18 years old on 22 October 2001 which means she was still seventeen when she had Henry.

Why did the Curse transport Snow’s coffin to Storybrooke? In 1x02 it was implied that Regina had control over the Curse, so why bring the coffin over? That’s proof that the Curse is real so it doesn’t make a lick of sense for her to just bring it over to Storybrooke.

There’s no way in hell an umbrella could support a person’s weight. What’s that umbrella made of?

Emma wasn’t paying attention in Storybrooke as she asked if Marco is Archie’s father but in the first episode she was there when Marco said he didn’t have children.

The whole thing with the hearts didn’t make that much sense. If the heart is ripped out, how does a person keep functioning? They never explained that and I think it’s quite important, seeing how many plot points rested upon the idea that hearts can be ripped out.

In the beginning of the episode Snow didn’t know that Regina wanted her dead but then she suddenly figured out that Regina sent Graham to kill her (and only because he wasn’t a knight). How? Why would she even consider that possibility if she didn’t suspect anything about Regina’s true intentions?

Graham gave Snow a whistle which they never showed her use. It’s not that big of a deal but why put it in a scene if you don’t really intend to make anything of it?

If the Curse prevented anyone from leaving town, why did Regina even bother to send Ava and Nicholas to Boston?

Why did Kathryn think she was pregnant? David’s words in the cabin and his actions throughout the episode implied that they didn’t even have sex.

Why did David start blacking out again? The first time he didn’t have cursed memories and he had just heard his and Snow’s story so he went to search for her. But here it didn’t make any sense and they never explained it. I feel like they just shoehorned it here so that there would be more drama and it really annoyed me. And he magically stopped blacking out when they didn’t need him to anymore.

In Storybrooke how does Granny think she got the scar on her hand?

How did Regina put the key under Mary Margaret’s pillow (where MM said it was in 1x17) without waking her up?

If Jefferson couldn’t find his way back to the Enchanted Forest, how did the Curse that affected only the Enchanted Forest bring him to Storybrooke?

Why did they feel the need to give Blue the name “Rheul Gorm”? They never used it again.

How come Henry only discovered there was a story added to his book at the most convenient moment? He got the book back in 1x13.

Since when can Jefferson’s hat open portals to past moments in time? This is not how it works and we all know it.

Snow didn’t know that Daniel was dead despite the fact that she said (in that same episode, mind you) that she had destroyed Regina’s happiness. What else could she be possibly refering to?

“I gave up my heart so that the Queen would spare Snow’s.” - That’s not what happened. And while some of the inconsistencies in the first episodes are understandable because they were still figuring out how the story would progress, this one is just annoying because we saw that that’s not what happened.

You can probably notice that most inconsistencies come from incorrect lines, the writers not knowing how to tie two points, Jefferson or Emma’s superpower. Most of that is fine and does not cause major annoyances. The problem with tying plot points together only gets exacerbated in the next seasons though and they should’ve probably worked on that a little more.
