Copenhagen was so much fun. I was there for three days for work, and the organisation treated us well. We had a gala dinner on the first night; went to the opera where they’d organised a band and a lovely singer. The views from the opera house were incredible. We cycled loads, went sightseeing. Tivoli gardens were fantastic, with loads to eat and walk around - the weather was just perfect - the views from the round tower were gorgeous; and on our last night my team and I went for a boat ride, stopped by Soho house for a drink and called it a night. At one point of time I realised how lucky I am to be able to travel the world at just 24. I’ve been travelling abroad since I was born but somehow, this excursion felt different.
My trip then took me to south Germany, to this extremely tiny rural town. I’m with a dear friend who I consider my little brother; I had showed him my city when he was visiting me now he’s returning the favour. It’s so lush green, the air is nippy, with occasional sunlight. The flowers were so colourful, little pockets of pink and purple and red; the lake was so blue and fresh; I felt so connected to nature, and I was so glad to be in this area for a couple of days, away from the bustling city life. We’re participating in a yoga retreat and I’ve been following the Guruji for a while now. The sessions have been fantastic thus far and I’m keen to practice when I go back to India.
I broke my no-drinking streak and have concluded that when in Europe, the Unholy ABC Trinity become redundant. ABC: Alcohol, Baked goods and Cheese. It’s too hot where I live in India to consume and burn these easily plus I don’t prefer drinking in India for the sake of my reputation.
I would’ve loved to stay longer and see Berlin but duty calls so I’m heading back home. At least I got some decent amount of shopping done. I bought a black skirt and a very chic sweater from Selected Femme, two longchamp bags and one Nike top. I bought some stuff for my mum, hunted for shoes for my sibling but then I couldn’t find what I was looking for so I said screw it. I got my friend a bottle of German gin for his birthday at the duty free.
I need to renew my wardrobe and this is the year for that. I’m waiting for the designer to give me my clothes. She’s taking quite a long time and I’m hoping that she’s able to execute the vision I had. im also in dire need of more casual stuff - trousers and comfortable blouses and shirts.
my photoshoot pictures came back and they’re beyond gorgeous. I’ve already updated my LinkedIn, WhatsApp, Soho house app (😣). I redownloaded instagram to see which bitches I need to remove from my account since my last refresh (I only download instagram and reactivate my account to unfollow and remove people).

favourite books you read in 2023? least favourite?
To the surprise of absolutely no one, my dearest, favourite book I read this year was T.E Lawrence's Seven Pillars of Wisdom. It was the kind of book that was not only damn good but also changed me fundamentally as a person and put my personality and interests on a new trajectory with a jetpack strapped on. It's impossible to overstate the impact this book has had on me. The actual, physical edition I read is also part of my dearest 2023 memories: I was on a mission to find it when I went on a solo-trip to Berlin this summer, the first bookshop I went to gave me a postcard and wrote some suggestions for where to find it on the back (I have the postcard taped up by my bed) - I took the U-bahn straight to the first shop and they had it! I loved that shop, it had such a cool vibe and the man at the register was really nice. Bought way too many books there most of which I still haven't read. When I open that edition of Pillars it's like I'm back in Berlin in the summer heat. I've said all of this and not even talked about the inherent qualities of the book, but they're many and I loove it. WE SEVEN PILLARS POSTING IN THIS INVIOLATE HOUSE AS A MEMORY TO YOU.
Lawrence's The Mint was also another favourite, as was Jeremy Wilson's Lawrence biography and John Mack's Prince of Our Disorder.
On the topic of non-fiction, I read a very entertaining book called The Fires of Lust: Sex In The Middle Ages which I recommend. Really interesting and enlightening research and assertions. It humanizes peoples of the past and effectively makes the point that people, across time and space, are pretty much the same while pointing out the differences between medieval sexuality and our popular (mis)conceptions of it.
Back to literary fiction, I also read and very much enjoyed The Color Purple by Alice Walker, The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath and Song of Solomon by Toni Morrison. James Joyce's The Dead was my favourite short-story, with E.M Forster's The Life to Come and D.H Lawrence's Fanny and Annie coming in at 2nd and 3rd, respectively.
I didn't read any fiction I would call bad or anything, but if I have to say least favourite it's probably Emily St. John Mandel's Station Eleven. Just not my type of book.
Some of the (new) books I hope to read and finish by 2024: War and Peace (cirka 200 pages in rn), Anna Karenina, Orlando, The Odyssey, A Passage to India, The full Oxford text of Seven Pillars of Wisdom, and Jens Bjørneboe's Bestialitetens Historie.
This got kinda long but thank you for the ask darling❤️

In today's interconnected world, the realm of business transcends geographical boundaries, intertwining cultures, economies, and technologies to create a truly global marketplace. From bustling metropolises to remote villages, entrepreneurs and corporations alike are navigating the intricate tapestry of international commerce. Let's embark on a journey around the world to explore the diverse landscapes of business and uncover the trends shaping economies worldwide.
1. The Rise of Emerging Markets
Emerging markets, once considered peripheral players in the global economy, have now taken center stage. Countries like China, India, Brazil, and Indonesia are experiencing rapid economic growth, fueled by urbanization, technological advancements, and burgeoning middle-class populations. These dynamic markets offer immense opportunities for businesses seeking growth beyond traditional Western hubs.
2. Innovation Hubs and Tech Clusters
Innovation knows no bounds, with technology hubs sprouting up in unexpected corners of the globe. Silicon Valley may have long been synonymous with innovation, but cities like Tel Aviv, Bangalore, Shenzhen, and Berlin are challenging its dominance. These vibrant ecosystems foster collaboration between startups, investors, and established firms, driving breakthroughs in fields like artificial intelligence, biotechnology, and renewable energy.
3. Sustainable Business Practices
As the world grapples with environmental challenges, sustainability has become a top priority for businesses worldwide. From renewable energy initiatives to eco-friendly supply chains, companies are embracing sustainable practices to minimize their carbon footprint and meet the growing demands of socially-conscious consumers. Leading the charge are Nordic countries like Sweden and Denmark, renowned for their commitment to renewable energy and green innovation.
4. E-commerce Revolution
The advent of e-commerce has revolutionized the way we shop, transforming traditional retail landscapes and creating new opportunities for entrepreneurs. Platforms like Amazon, Alibaba, and Shopify have democratized access to global markets, allowing businesses of all sizes to reach customers across borders. The rise of mobile technology has further accelerated this trend, with mobile payments and digital wallets reshaping consumer behavior in emerging economies.
5. Cultural Adaptation and Localization
In a world of diversity, cultural sensitivity is essential for businesses seeking success on a global scale. From marketing campaigns to product design, understanding local customs and preferences can make or break a venture in foreign markets. Companies like McDonald's and Coca-Cola have mastered the art of cultural adaptation, tailoring their offerings to resonate with consumers from Tokyo to Buenos Aires.
6. Geopolitical Uncertainty
Despite the promise of global integration, geopolitical tensions pose significant challenges for businesses operating across borders. Trade wars, Brexit, and regional conflicts can disrupt supply chains, increase tariffs, and erode consumer confidence, forcing companies to navigate a complex web of regulations and diplomatic relations. Flexibility and agility are paramount in an era defined by geopolitical uncertainty.
7. The Future of Work
Advancements in technology are reshaping the future of work, blurring the lines between physical and digital environments. Remote work, gig economy platforms, and automation are transforming traditional employment models, offering both opportunities and challenges for businesses and workers alike. Countries like Estonia and Singapore are pioneering digital nomad visas and flexible work arrangements to attract global talent in an increasingly interconnected world.
In conclusion, the landscape of global business is dynamic and ever-evolving, shaped by economic, technological, and cultural forces. As businesses navigate this complex terrain, adaptability, innovation, and a deep understanding of local dynamics will be key to success in the global marketplace.
Whether you're a seasoned multinational corporation or a budding entrepreneur, embracing the diversity of our world and harnessing the opportunities it presents will be essential for thriving in the interconnected economies of tomorrow

 HISTORY
The brand was founded by Akash Westley in March 2000. Before that, he worked for one of the top luxury brands in Europe after completing his master's in France. When he attended a fashion courtesy in Italy, which is attended by top luxurious brands from all over the world, there were almost all countries taking part with their prestigious brands, but he didn't find India among them, so as an Indian, it touched his heart. So he decided to quit his job and start a premium brand in his own country. After quitting his job, he returned to India in 1997, and after 3 years, with his knowledge and experience, he started Valencia Zephyr, the luxurious brand in south India, at the heart of Kerala, Kochi.
At the time of starting the brand, there were many challenges that he had to overcome because the concept of a luxury brand was not well accepted by Indian people because it was like, 'Why does somebody want to spend that much money on clothing?’ That was the main concern that he faced. In addition to that, there were many demotivations, and people tried to pull him back, but he decided that no matter what, he would start his luxurious brand, so he chose Kerala as his destination because he found that people in Kerala are more fashion-oriented and welcome new innovations.
Five years after starting the brand and going through many struggles and downs, people started to accept the fast-fashion concept. After the 2005 brand started to witness significant growth in its sales, people from all over India came to Kerala to buy the luxurious clothing of Valencia Zephyr. People started to notice the quality of the materials, perfection in the stitching, and uniqueness of the designs that were offered by the brand, and they realized that it was worth spending and that it was complete value for money.
In 2006, Valencia Zephyr opened its second shop in Mumbai.
In 2010, the brand opened branches in Chennai, Bangalore, Goa, Trivandrum, and later the branches of Bangalore and Mumbai, along with Kochi, which was considered the headquarters of the brand in India. After the great success in India, the brand opened its first foreign shop in the heart of Paris, France, which is known as the fashion capital of the world, to acquire more attention from the world, and later established its branches in Milan, London, and Berlin. Apart from Europe, the brand started to expand to parts of North America, including New York, Los Angeles, New Orleans, and California, as well as in Korea, China, Japan, Asia, Sydney, Melbourne, Australia, and some stores in the Middle East. Starting with one store, the brand now owns more than 5,000 stores all over the world.

Typographer Research
Verena Gerlach: Type and graphic designer
Verena Gerlach was an instructor of photography at the Hochschule der Künste in Berlin in 1991 and spent 1992 doing a first-year course at Glasgow School of Art. From 1993 to 1998 she studied communication design at Kunsthochschule Berlin Weißensee and spent one year (1996) as an exchange student at the London College of Printing.
FF Karbid, FF Sizmo, and Chambers Sans are some of the few typefaces she created, Verena has her own studio for corporate design in Berlin.
Tumblr media
"I always found it fascinating to discover local typography and lettering. This fascination goes far beyond my hometown Berlin. I love to travel, and for me, the experience of the written word in public spaces shapes the genius loci of a specific place." - Verena Gerlach
Taking inspiration from local street signs and other environmental typography in Berlin - 80's/90's - Gerlach created typographic cover of the 'iconic Berlin Notebook'.
Tumblr media
In 2014, India’s world famous tradition of sign painting and lettering was the main incentive for Verena to spend two months in the Goethe bangaloREsidency summer 2014, Initially, Verena conceptualised a poster series based on the needs and desires of young women from the weaker economic section of Indian society. Based on this lettering, she decided to delve even deeper into the world of Indian decorative craft, adding punch to her already powerful designs.
Starting with raw silk, Verena worked with the craftworkers to embellish posters with words from hand-painted Kannada and English shop signs and ornament them with beads and sequins. She also documented the entire silk-production process in photographs.
Assorted photographs of Gerlach.

Edinburgh 9/30-10/1
I got to Edinburgh and was immediately obsessed. It is so picturesque and right up my alley. I wish I did two days here instead of one in Glasgow oops ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Now I know for next time! I checked in then went up Cockburn St. which led straight to where my Harry Potter tour met. The weather was absolutely horrible until around 4pm. It was cold, windy and down pouring but that still couldn’t put a damper on how much I was enjoying this city. I stopped into the Milkman where I got another really bad chai but it was really cute inside haha. Then I got a sweater from the vintage shop right next to it. I got earrings from .. and then went on to my tour. It was okay, the guide Fraser was pretty funny but I just didn’t know enough about HP I think to care. After the tour I stopped in to get changed since it stopped raining. I went back to Old Town where I walked around and tried MUMs. I got mac&cheese and a milkshake which were both pretty good. I walked around more, saw the castle and did a little bit of shopping- got a scarf. I met up with Nicole and Mark for a little. Then I went to Dean Village and walked back through New Town. Everything is really adorable, but I had to take a little break because I walked over 21,000 steps today and mainly in booties lol. I laid down for a bit then went to Mother India for dinner where Mark and Nicole met me. It was decent, but I don’t think I would go back. Mark and Nicole said they liked it. I went home and to bed after since I had to be up at 4:45am for my flight to Berlin.

Some context for the 1890s
I thought it might be fun to look into the period when Dracula was written and set in a little more detail.
Key facts
In 1897, the population of the UK was just under 40m - so about 60% of what it is today. (By contrast the US population at the time was just 21% of what it is today). Only about 6m of them had the right to vote - about 40% of adult men.
With a population of 6m, London was the largest city in the world and would be for another 20 years.
Tumblr media
Politics and imperialism
The British Empire wasn't yet at its peak, which would be at some point between 1913 and 1922 depending on whether you define it by land or population. This was the time of the Scramble for Africa - in the 1890s alone, Britain colonised the countries that are now Uganda, Zanzibar, Malawi, Botswana, Zimbabwe, parts of Sudan and parts of South Africa. (Ish - matching 1890s borders to modern ones is tricky).
All the same, the sense of effortless British dominance was fading, because countries like Germany, France and the USA were starting to catch up. In 1896, the book 'Made in Germany' by Ernest Edwin Williams was a bestseller, bemoaning that cheaper German goods were crowding out British ones in shops. (It's available for free online; just google it if you're interested.) Here's 1890s Berlin:
Tumblr media
Britain was only just emerging from what the Victorians called "The Great Depression" from the 1870s to early 1890s. The wealthiest and most powerful country in the world didn't always feel that way to the people living in it.
Alongside anxieties about Britain's place in the world, the other major political topic which dominated the 1890s was the question of Irish Home Rule - essentially whether Ireland should be allowed its own parliament and responsibility for domestic affairs while still remaining part of the UK. The Second Home Rule Bill passed the Commons in 1893 but was defeated in the Lords. Here's 1890s Dublin:
Tumblr media
Society
Less than a percentage of the British population would have been people of colour. The 1921 census showed just 75,000 people born in India - 1897 wouldn't have been much different. All the same, the University of Oxford - i.e. one of the most elite institutions in the country - had its first black student as long ago as 1873.
This was a period of growing rights and freedoms in the UK (starting from a very low base). In 1891, children under 11 were banned from working in factories; in 1893, education was made free and compulsory for children up to age 11; in 1882, the Married Women's Property Act allowed married women to own and control property in their own right. Many socialist and trade unionist organisations were founded at this time, including a precursor to the Labour Party.
Tumblr media
A social concern at this time were the "surplus women" - there was perceived to be a relative excess of women compared with men, prompting fears they wouldn't be able to marry and would have to work. Women were about 40% of the labour force.
If a man and a woman got engaged but the man then broke it off, the woman could sue him for "breach of promise" as this was considered a binding legal contract. The woman could break the engagement with no legal penalty. (You might recognise this as the basis for several Jeeves and Wooster plotlines).
The fertility rate was falling fast - from an average of nearly 5 children per woman in 1880 to 4 in 1895 (this would fall to 2 by 1930). Around 1 in 5 children died before the age of 5, and around 1 in 200 births resulted in the death of the mother.
Daily life and prices
There were only a handful of cars on British roads - so when Mina says she and Lucy "drove up to the house", she means by horse, not by car. But there were ~25,000km of railways in the UK, compared with about 17,000km today.
Tumblr media
The rise of the railways and people actually getting days off meant that this was the golden age of trips to the British seaside. Train fares were a penny per mile, meaning that London to Whitby cost about 20s or a week's labour for a solicitor's clerk, with the purchasing power of £64 today.
As a full-blown solicitor, my guess (though it's only a guess) is that Jonathan is earning about twice that. A female teacher's salary was around £75 a year or 28s a week. A housemaid would earn just £10 a year, though she would get bed and board as well.
Tumblr media
The first edition of a novel cost about a shilling and reprints cost even less - as little as a penny or two for the cheapest books. Literacy was nearly universal in the UK.
Also available for a penny were magazines like the hugely popular Tit-Bits, which was the first periodical to sell over a million copies in the UK. It consisted of short, mostly human interest snippets of information, as well as short stories. Lucy and Mina probably wouldn't read Tit-Bits, but Mr Swales might.
