TRAVIS: “Listen to me. That news that you watch every day is designed to terrify you. Because if it terrifies you, you drink more, you smoke more, you take more prescription drugs, and that financially benefits the same people who program the news. And yes, there are bad people out there with a crazy number of guns, but there are good people, too. Kind people, people who fight for justice and take care of their neighbours and build houses and plant trees and ignore the fearmongering or rise above it. So don’t waste your energy worrying you’re gonna get shot. Use it to fight for the world you want to be a part of. Use all that energy to make your fully functional legs lift you up out of this pee-stained suit and march you towards the world you want to live in!”
Okay, Travis Montgomery is awesome. He may just be my favourite male character in this entire show. That monologue was awesome. And it’s true… about the news. Nobody should ever watch the news because it’s never actually the truth of how anything really is. They emphasise to great effect just to terrorize you.
I’m not saying it doesn’t report factual events. I’m just saying they make those events way worse than they are and they do it purposefully to get a bad reaction.
Interesting how the show wants to bring awareness to that. I’m guessing the creators are fed up of bullshit and want to broadcast their views through their art/entertainment. Which is exactly what art itself is for.
I approve. Well done guys! 👍

Absolutely fantastic bit of nostalgia here, if you are from Northern Ireland and Of A Certain Age. It's often the more subtle things that have the capacity to move us by their old familiarity as we get older - the way people used to call masks "false faces", the false faces themselves (the cheaper and more neon, the more appealing, to my mind), the cans of silly string, and even, strangely, the discussion of having to get a fireworks licence. Fireworks are traditional here at Halloween, but when I was growing up they were hard to get.
The context of that is that we were living through an armed conflict at the time, so it was considered unwise to freely sell explosives to the unlicensed public. What this meant in practice was that it was an open secret that the police used confiscated fireworks at home with their families, and that wealthier people who owned boats got around the ban by using ship's flares.
Handheld sparklers and other indoor fireworks could be sold freely, and were therefore hugely popular. Ironically, now they sell the things on Amazon UK, but you can't buy them from Northern Ireland because they can't be sent through the post. But these were ubiquitous in the 80s and 90s:

Homemade indoor fireworks…
To make the black snake - we filled a metal bowl with sand, making a hollow and filling it with a mixture of 4 parts sugar and one part baking soda. We ignited the mixture with some small pieces of fire lighter.

i fucking HATE FIREWORKS. SO MUCH.
they're fine when they're far enough away but even the small ones are so fucking loud and obnoxious and bright and repetitive
at best, all fireworks are pretty for a few seconds before becoming distressing and agitating I'm not even kidding
whenever i'm in the presence of one of those golden little ones that fire off a thousand little gunshots I get so pissed off because like. who wanted that. who needs that. why do we need to make explosions to celebrate independence who tf came up with that idea
im gonna go stick my head in a bucket of water to mask the muffled cotton feeling in my ears god fucking damnit

gonna spend nye on my own again like last year and maybe I should be sad about it but I'm honestly thrilled
I'll go through some stuff in my new planner, make nice food and find out if I can see fireworks from my window or if I need to venture outside for that. thank you to my various Brain Issues, most days you're annoying but when it comes to my feelings about spending a holiday alone, you're actually very useful

A fun part about living in the us is when you don't expect there to be fireworks and then are suddenly faced with the sound of fireworks going off you are NOT immediately excited. On account of thinking you are about 2 b shot

Fall Wedding at Elderberry Manor
John and Kristy's fall wedding at Elderberry Manor in West Bend, with an awesome firework show at the reception!
John and Kristy’s October wedding at Elderberry Manor was so much fun, and I’m excited to share more about it on the blog this week. I was at Elderberry Manor last year, and I love how absolutely welcoming Stephanie and the staff there are! Since last year, they’ve built a beautiful bridal suite, too! It was a pretty gray, chilly, cloudy day and I must have prayed a thousand prayers for the rain…
