lots of colleagues spending lots of braincells on "how to prevent cheating at coursework using gpt" while i think this is the one real issue that should concern us as educators (i mean, assuming we don't care about the exploitation/pollution/ethical issues raised by the corporate-US-owned random word god-machine, which I doubt most ppl in my department give a shit about)
like i've never heard anyone arguing against saying/demonstrating "lol it's shit" to students, but official uni policy (here) always prevaricate with "responsible use of AI", colleagues shamelessly writing "responsible/safe ai" in their grants application and a line i've heard from multiple other academics being "it really helps make some documents more professional sometimes though!".

Excerpt from this story from Grist:
Within weeks, the nation will deploy 9,000 people to begin restoring landscapes, erecting solar panels, and taking other steps to help guide the country toward a cleaner, greener future.
The first of those workers were inducted into the American Climate Corps on Tuesday during a virtual event from the White House. Their swearing-in marks another step forward for the Biden administration’s ambitious climate agenda. The program, which President Joe Biden announced within days of taking office in 2021, is a modern version of the Climate Conservation Corps, the New Deal-era project that put 3 million men to work planting trees and building national parks.
During the ceremony, the inaugural members of the corps promised to work “on behalf of our nation and planet, its people, and all its species, for the better future we hold within our sight.”
The American Climate Corps was among the first things Biden announced as president, but it took a while to secure funding and get started. More than 20,000 young people are expected to join during the program’s first year, according to the White House, with new openings appearing on the American Climate Corps job site in the months ahead. The pay varies depending on the location and experience required, with open positions ranging from around $11 to $28 an hour.
The administration is promoting the corps as a way for young people to jump-start green careers. In April, the White House announced a partnership with TradesFutures, a nonprofit construction company, a sign that the program might help fill the country’s shortage of skilled workers who can help electrify everything. The White House will also place members in so-called “energy communities” like former coal-mining towns to help with environmental remediation and other projects.
“Whether it’s managing forests in the Pacific Northwest, deploying clean energy across the Southwest, or promoting sustainable farming practices throughout the heartland, the president’s American Climate Corps is providing thousands of young Americans with the skills and experience to advance a more sustainable, just tomorrow,” White House climate advisor Ali Zaidi said in a press release on Tuesday.

There was a while in 2021 that I was between jobs, and found a place near me on a job website. Supposedly had good pay and benefits, but the job description was minimal and...odd. Had a bunch of "interview" questions that were invasive and didn't feel like they applied to the job in question. So I dug a little deeper bc it felt hinky, and found their website, and boy am I glad I never applied...
It was one of those Naturopathy and natural healing scams, and they sell vials of (supposedly) distilled/purified water that have been electronically infused with the energy patterns of allergens or diseases (Covid being one of them!), with the name carefully printed and taped to the vial (which I guess gives the electronic infusion more...power??) Honestly, I still have no idea what exactly you're supposed to do with them, bc no source explains it. I guess you them and make a wish that you don't get infected by disease or have a severe allergic reaction?

There used to be a plotline that goes something like "you're the best gamer in the world, and game was really just a covert training and recruitment tool, so now you're going to use those skills to fight aliens or whatever". It's more or less gone away, one of those speculative fiction tropes that did not stand the test of time.
I think it's a great premise though, and should start being applied to other hobbies.
"Ma'am, this regional knitting competition was actually a covert operation to find someone to run this machine of the elder gods we found buried in the desert."
"Congratulations on your silver play button, you are hereby inducted into the Paranormal Defense Force, a subsidiary of Youtube and a branch of the United States military."
"Welcome to the Olympic village. If you've made it this far, you're hereby recruited into the international super soldier program, fighting our enemies at the edge of the Crab Nebula."

The New York Police Department named 2020 [University of Pennsylvania] Engineering graduate Luigi Mangione as a “strong person of interest” in the ongoing murder investigation of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. In 2016, Mangione founded Penn’s Game Research and Development Environment, also known as UPGRADE. The game development club aimed to “foster creative expression and cultivate career skills for the artists, programmers, and creatives interested in game development in the Penn community” and grew to include over 50 members. Shortly after the press conference, a Penn Today article about UPGRADE which featured several quotes from Mangione was removed from the website, and a link to the page now directs to an error message. In the article, Mangione discussed his interest in programming and his experience founding the club. In 2017, The Daily Pennsylvanian reported on UPGRADE's attempts to move away from Penn's competitive club culture by admitting anyone who is willing to join without an application. “We discussed if we would seem more legitimate with an application, but that’s not the environment we’re going for. Our goal is to have fun and learn,” Mangione told the DP at the time. “As long as you’re willing to put in the time, you can be a game developer.” In 2018, Mangione — a computer and information science major — was inducted into Penn’s Eta Kappa Nu honor society for excellence in electrical and computer engineering.
