The American Film Institute's Greatest Female Screen Legends (from Golden Age Hollywood)
The American Film Institute voted on the 25 Greatest Female and Male Screen Legends in 1999. To have been eligible, an actor or actress must have made their screen debut in or before 1950 or have died before the list was made in 1999 (thereby marking a completed body of work).
Here are their top 25 Female Legends. I know it isn't diverse in the slightest, but I still adore everyone here. Hopefully a future iteration of this list will yield more inclusive results.

“People, remember this name: Ann-Margret. Simple and easy, just like the girl herself. Ann-Margret, 19, is the girl who will become the biggest Swede in Hollywood since Greta Garbo and Ingrid Bergman. She's a sexy, beautiful, intelligent, ambitious, green-eyed brunette. She sings, dances and acts. Critics have said: "She moves like Elvis, we call her 'The Animal, her voice should be X-rated, she's filming with Bette Davis, she stars with Pat Boone and Bobby Darin.” Audiences have said: "She's what's happening in show business". One of her records has sold 1 million copies, and for a long time she's been on the hit lists. So, here's the advice one more time - remember this name: Ann-Margret. She's already big, and she'll be bigger still.”
/ The Swedish magazine Bild Journalen hyperventilating over hot new starlet-of-the-moment Ann-Margret in 1961, when her image was being pitched somewhere between “female Elvis” / “New Marilyn” (or “New Rita Hayworth”) and “America's answer to Brigitte Bardot”. (You can tell this article is early in her career because the most famous of devilish redheads is still a brunette!) /
Today should be a religious holiday: triple threat (actress, singer, dancer), Valsjöbyn’s finest export and quintessential sex-kitten-gone-berserk the fabulous Ann-Margret (born 28 April 1941) turns 82! Coincidentally, she recently dropped Born to Be Wild, a collection of rock’n’roll standards and her first new album in years. It’s as bizarre and kitsch as you’d expect from A-M – and merits a whole separate post! Pictured: Ann-Margret in 1968.

EL DIBUJANTE DEL CINE: JOSÉ RAMÓN SÁNCHEZ
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Realmente ahora nadie conoce a José Ramón Sánchez.

every time i see charles boyer is in a film i want to watch i immediately think "ugh not this dude" but that's like so unfair to him cause he's perfectly alright. i think it's cause he played ingrid bergman's horrible husband in gaslight and napoleon in conquest which is the worst garbo film of all so now my brain automatically has this violent reaction whenever it sees him

Least favourite old Hollywood stars?
Nothing against their fans! And, this goes without saying, but I love most old Hollywood stars, the ladies particularly. I never care much about men, one way or the other, so the only one I can think of that's my least favorite is Cornel Wilde, off the top of my head? My least favorite ladies would definitely be Norma Shearer, Lena Horne, and Barbara Stanwyck. And then, and it's not that I dislike them but, I could never get into the careers or personalities of Ingrid Bergman, Marilyn Monroe, Claudette Colbert, Grace Kelly (I'm trying tho lol), June Allyson, Greta Garbo (I know), or Audrey Hepburn. Then, I love this lady's work and think she's a great beauty so I reblog her all the time but, I dislike Ava Gardner's character.

When I Went to the Film - D.H. Lawrence - recited by Jeremy Irons
When I Went to the Film - D.H. Lawrence
When I went to the film and saw all the black-and-white feelings that nobody felt,
And heard the audience sighing and sobbing with all the emotions they none of them felt,
And saw them cuddling with rising passions they none of them for a moment felt,
And caught them moaning from close-up kisses, black-and-white kisses that could not be felt,
It was like being in heaven, which I am sure has a white atmosphere
Upon which shadows of people, pure personalities
Are cast in black and white, and move
In flat ecstasy, supremely unfelt
And heavenly.

Born on this day: true Italian cinema royalty, the exquisite Alida Valli (née Alida Maria Laura Altenburger von Marckenstein-Frauenberg – she was a Baroness! -  31 May 1921 - 22 April 2006), who boasted a spectacular seven-decade career. (Her filmography stretches from 1936 until final role in 2002). Benito Mussolini once called Valli "the most beautiful woman in the world", but don’t hold that against her! At the height of her Continental fame, Hollywood imported her hoping she’d be a “new Garbo” or “new Ingrid Bergman”. Billed simply as “Valli” she featured in Alfred Hitchcock’s The Paradine Case (1947). More successfully, Valli made an intensely melancholic impression opposite Orson Welles in the British The Third Man (1949). Back in Italy, she collaborated with all the essential art cinema auteurs of the period: Luchino Visconti (Senso (1954)), Michelangelo Antonioni (Il Grido (1957)), Pier Paolo Pasolini (Oedipus Rex (1967)), Bernardo Bertolucci (The Spider's Strategem (1970)). Particularly noteworthy: in the eerie French thriller Les yeux sans visage (1959) (aka Eyes without a Face), she is icily inscrutable as the deranged scientist’s lesbianic assistant with the pearl choker and fetishistic wet-look PVC raincoat. But while Valli clearly excelled in the realm of high culture, she was gutsily unafraid to get down-and-dirty in horror and exploitation flicks in the seventies, like Lisa and the Devil (1973) by Mario Bava, Dario Argento’s Suspiria (1977) and nunsploitation shocker Killer Nun (1979) as the Mother Superior! She even cropped up in 1976 disaster movie The Cassandra Crossing, featuring the all-star cast of Sophia Loren, Richard Harris, Burt Lancaster, Ava Gardner – and OJ Simpson! If you seek out one Valli film, make it the swooning operatic melodrama Senso (pictured) about the doomed love story between an Italian countess (Valli) and an Austrian officer (Farley Granger). It’s impossibly beautiful - just look at the composition of this shot!
