all of this is to say: he would open up to you in a way he never has to anyone else before; he would be vulnerable; exposed, unprotected, ribs pried apart by his own hands—wide open and willing to share his heart with you, no matter how dangerous it may be, no matter the risk or pain or terror involved. he trusts that you will be gentle, careful, cautious; mindful of him and his past and who he truly is at his vey core, accepting of all of him no matter the cost. 

selfishness is an inherent trait within him; it isn’t something he can entirely turn off, though he can more often than not reign it in, subdue it, or tone it down—hide it, mute it, stomp it into something small and sniveling that just barely tinges his life/interactions—until it comes to you, of course. in his most intimate and special relationships, this intrinsic selfishness manifests as extreme possessiveness and protectiveness, as greed and jealousy, as an insatiable desire, hunger, need for you and only you, always. and it is uncontrollable, untamable.

ultimately i agree with you on all accounts; dazai is, at his core, an extremely selfish person, and he is more than willing to do what he must to secure the best outcome for himself/what HE wants, irregardless of who he has to hurt or step on to do it. i don’t think that that makes his feelings any less genuine—like you, i think he truly does care for chuuya and has a sincere soft spot for him—i just think it’s more a case of his selfishness outweighs pretty much anything else. like sure, he’s fond of chuuya, but that doesn’t mean he’ll keep him around if he becomes a threat—that fondness isn’t strong enough to counteract his selfishness. if chuuya begins causing problems or threatening whatever it is dazai wants, he’s gone in an instant, personal feelings set aside for whatever dazai’s ultimate goal is.

however, i think chuuya knows dazai really well—perhaps even better than dazai believes he does (although dazai is so fucking perceptive i’m not sure this would even be possible ahaha)—and he’d know which buttons to press and when to keep himself ultimately safe and a part of the relationship, irregardless of the fact that dazai knows just how to get under his skin and chuuya is quick to anger/react. if chuuya really loves you, and he knows his only chance at being in your life and having any part of you at all means he has to share with dazai, means he has to play dazai’s game, then he’ll grit his teeth and fucking do it. for you, and only for you.

i think that as long as chuuya is willing to submit to dazai in some way and allow him to have and own that ‘leader’ or boss title, the relationship works fairly well. i don’t think chuuya necessarily has an issue with authority or being given orders, but i do think he pushes back and challenges things he doesn’t agree with, so that’s where most of their fights or clashes would stem from (aside from the obvious of dazai provoking him simply to get a reaction + entertain himself). it would mostly be concerning matters surrounding you—dazai thinks one thing is best for you, chuuya disagrees and pushes back as hard as he can while still keeping that delicate power balance and enabling himself to stay a part of this relationship. dazai isn’t exactly a tyrant though; not when it comes to chuuya, anyway. he values his opinion and he’ll hear him and his opposing argument out before he makes a final decision. there will be times where chuuya will have to swallow his pride and let dazai do what he wants even if he doesn’t agree with it, and there will be moments where dazai’s impeccable manipulation gets to chuuya and he’s tricked into believing dazai’s in the right and it was him in the wrong all along. ultimately, though, chuuya has enough of a sense of self preservation to know when to back the fuck down.

my answer is that chuuya pursues you first, because i genuinely don’t think dazai would ever share if he had you first—like i don’t even think it’s a remote possibility. he’d honestly be so hurt that you somehow fell for someone else just as hard as you fell for him (cue yandere behaviour!!!) and i could definitely see him killing chuuya because of it.

conversely, when dazai falls in love with you and finds out you’re already with chuuya, he can’t believe his luck. a pretty baby and causing chuuya emotional pain??? and getting to, essentially, own chuuya, too? to have him ultimately submit to dazai? well, that’s fantastic—that’s a two for one deal; you come as a set!

chuuya fights for you, obviously, as dazai continues to romance you—to entrench you further and further, deeper and deeper into his heart until it has consumed you whole—but ultimately chuuya decides to compromise. because eventually it all just gets too fucking exhausting—dazai is too quick, too sly, too goddamn slippery, and chuuya knows dazai can and will keep this up for as long as he has to, as long as is necessary for him to win. additionally, chuuya realizes that he runs the (very low but still real) risk of losing you entirely to dazai if he keeps trying to win this war against him, and chuuya just can’t have that. he’d rather compromise, and have to share, than not have you at all.

and also kinda hard to answer because i feel like even though chuuya very clearly n evidently does not like dazai, he does, in some twisted way, respect him. aku is selfish as heck and reader was supposed to be his toy to begin with—his to own and fuck and use whenever and however he’d like—but chuuya isn’t like that. chuuya sees you as his equal: as a person to be loved, not an object to be owned.

i think it heavily depends on the situation itself and on the motivation/reason why chuuya feels the need to steal time against dazai’s wishes. if it’s because dazai is being unnecessarily and unfairly greedy with you, and is using his power and title as Boss of the relationship to shove chuuya in a lonely little corner while dazai soaks up all of your attention and love for himself, then yes absolutely i could see him disobeying whatever bullshit rule dazai has tried to impose on him and taking the time that is rightfully his, because he genuinely believes he deserves this (like i said in this ask, i think chuuya would be willing to push back against dazai when he feels it’s necessary/feels very strongly on the matter, but would know when and how to do this to ultimately keep himself safely within and a part of the relationship).

ahahaha omg anon i mean i definitely wouldn’t put it past them! i think it’s a huge possibility hehe c: dazai and chuuya have such an interesting relationship because while they seriously clash and butt heads, they also seem to understand one another on this extremely deep, intrinsic, inexplicable level. it isn’t even something either of them can fully make sense of or put into words, but i think they share something special and understand each other in a way no one else in the world can—especially since they have so much shared life experience. despite their apparent distaste for one another, they so clearly have this connection with one another; they have always been able to cooperate and work extremely efficiently together, and they understand one another on an almost molecular level, to the point where they can now predict each others moves etc.

so yeah, i think it’s totally possible that their complex, incomprehensible relationship with one another has bled into something more physically intimate, especially during those long, lonely nights on those long, lonely missions, where it’s just the two of them and it’s been just the two of them for several days or weeks now, and they’re getting a little sentimental and sappy beneath the protective guise the veil of night projects, or the haze of alcohol/drugs. where they’re being open, and vulnerable, and quiet; sharing secrets and fears and hopes and dreams and goals that they’ll both pretend they’ve completely forgotten about by the time the sun rises.

Would you be willing to dissect dazai's character on here? I just find it soooo hard to understand him, his motivations and how genuine he actually is, how much of the emotions he portrays are fabricated and which ones are genuine. And how terrifying is the thought that he truly doesnt feel lime he is human (like does that come from not connecting with them and feeling so alianated from the mundane human concerns, or is it rooted deeper? Does he care about the people around him? Is it truly care? Is he even capable of it?). I always find it interesting when other people discuss their opinions on characters and i feel like you have a very unique way to dive into the psyche of each character you write for (and also as i mentioned dazai just goes way over my head)

oooh interesting question anon! my answer is rambly and is mostly just me splatting my thoughts all over this ask SO beware of that! <3

so i have actually already begun a section in my notebook/docs for him + my analysis of his character but as this is a pastime that i usually enjoy doing just for myself and keeping private i don’t think i’d share like, the entire thing (also it’ll end up being several thousand words by the time it’s done HAHA). additionally, since i have yet to consume all of the media associate with bsd i don’t feel like i can even fully dissect him; i can only offer the opinions i have on him at the moment based on what i’ve consumed/know—which right now is only the anime!

but!!!!!! with that being said i do love discussing character and sharing my thoughts on them when it comes to specific subjects/questions if that makes sense??? so if you ever have any specific questions and you’d like to know my personal thoughts on them i’m always more than open to sharing them!

like with what you’ve said here, for example, in regards to his emotions. i agree that he’s extremely complex, almost to the point of being convoluted, and he holds his cards very close to his chest. it seems like it would be incredibly difficult for someone to get genuinely close to him—and i mean like really close, like close enough to the point of him actually letting his guard down and taking off the several masks he wears throughout the day and kind of being fully himself and baring his authentic soul—but i do think that he’s sincere at least some of the time, and i think that he’s more authentic with the ADA than he ever was with the mafia, excluding oda who i think knew him better and more deeply than anyone else in the world ever has.

i can’t even begin to fathom your more complex questions about feeling human etc because i still feel like i haven’t dug into the material enough to give a deep enough answer tbh!

personally i believe that he’s moral greyness personified. i think he really doesn’t give a fuck about good or about evil, and i think he’s easily capable of both in great capacities. it really just depends on which he sets his mind on, whichever one he decides to be that day. i believe he has an immense amount of both within him and i don’t think his evil and sadistic tendencies just up and disappeared; it appears that he can switch between the two with astonishing ease whenever he wants to. to me it’s very clear that he has only decided to do good and focus on good purely because his best friend, and the one person it seemed like he truly, genuinely, deeply cared for, told him to do it. it isn’t like dazai had some sort of epiphany or a profound change of heart on his own that made him suddenly want to be better; it was just his best friend’s dying wish that he put his abilities and his intelligence towards doing good, and so that’s what he’s doing. and i think it’s THAT that motivates him more than anything else. it’s that oda said hey look i know you don’t care about either, so for me, go do some good in this world, and that dazai is honouring that because he loved him.

i think this also stems from guilt, too; from being unable to save oda, so he feels like this is next best thing—this is the least he can do for him, to honour him and to honour his death.

jumping back to his emotions being genuine, i think that his tendency to bother others purely for his own amusement is an inherent + authentic trait (because we see him do it on BOTH sides); i think he does genuinely care for atsushi and for the agency, i think he is capable of those positive emotions in some capacity because, again, oda is a prime example of him being able to FEEL things—to feel genuine and fundamental human emotions, even if he doesn’t feel them often or feel them with the intensity that others do. which is why i don’t think we can classify him as a true psychopath—i definitely believe he is stellar at mimicking emotions 100% and can do so whenever the situation calls for it (he’s so obviously a fantastic and skilled liar), but i think he does have the capacity to truly feel real things, too. and he fully understands morality and society’s collective moral compass, even if he himself doesn’t really care for it either way/doesn’t really personally lean one way or another.

​i think it’s really hard to tell which of his emotions are genuine and which are fabricated but i also think that if you use the question of ‘okay, is he lying here for the sake of his own plan succeeding/is he purposefully withholding information here’ is a good start at indicating whether or not he’s being genuine. for example, the way he treats higuchi when he first meets her!we now know in hindsight that he was only acting the way he did towards her so he could slip that lil radio thingie in her pocket and spy on her; to watch and see how things play out before interfering or jumping to conclusions.

i’m sorry this is such a chaotic mess HAHA he really is so so so complex and i’m still sifting through all of my own thoughts and interpretation/analysis of him as i continue to consume more of the series itself. anyway, these are my thoughts at the moment based on the information i have! they may change slightly in the future as i wade deeper into the material, but yeah! <3
