Hi there!
I think I bumped into your tumblr due to your music, but I just joined my local SCA barony!! (Innilgard, of the Kingdom of Lochac)
I was wondering if you could direct me towards some resources on how to make armour, I'm mostly doing rapier atm but I was talking to one of the ladies who does heavy and she mentioned her gambeson was legal for both rapier and heavy.
All good if you can't, you just seem friendly and knowledgeable.
Yours in service,
A freshly realised sword lesbian
Whoops, sorry it took me so long to reply! I saw the ask and then forgot it existed...
Congrats on joining the SCA! Always excited to see more sword lesbians ^-^
As for resources, I don’t know a ton off the top of my head. One of the knights in my area made a post aimed at very beginners here (https://www.arboreafalls.com/post/let-s-talk-about-armor) that should help you get a sense of the bare minimum you need to get started. Poking around online, this guide (https://tinyurl.com/227y4m2t) seems pretty decent, although it’s more focused on the setup rather than how to actually make armor.
Otherwise, you should take a look at the armor requirements for your kingdom (you said you’re from Lochac, right? here: https://sca.org.nz/wiki/index.php?title=Armoured_Combat:Armour_Requirements). Usually gambesons are a “nice to have”, for comfort rather than a requirement, so as long as your rapier gambeson is sturdy enough it should be fine. If you’re doing rapier, your gorget should work fine for heavy as well, rapier gorgets actually have stricter rules since you’re dealing with pointier weapons. Also, depending on your size and what your local heavy practice looks like, many fight practices have loaner gear available. If there’s loaner gear that fits you, that can be a good way to get started and at least see if you like it.
Best of luck!

Aight, now that the bag (involving the infamous silk lining, pictured bottom right in all its blueness) is finished, I know the sword fits, and the relevant people are happy with it, I can show it off!
It’s made to hold a rapier sword - specifically the rapier belonging to the rapier champion of the barony. It was just intended to be for like, ease of storage, and ‘it would be cool if it looked kinda nice but no stress’ (not exact words, but that was the vibe). But uh, I don’t do things by halves, so now it’s effectively a piece of regalia in its own right. I guess.
Anyway, I’m honestly pretty happy for how it came out! I tried two new things (making a drawstring, and the specific technique of gathering used) which, while they weren’t difficult, makes me feel like I’ve gained +5 to XP. And I have to admit, it does look kinda nice.
