I did an ask game a while back: ‘Give me a D&D race and a class/subclass and I’ll spitball a character concept’ and @insertgoodurlhere just gave me the following combination: warforged artificer

Now, I’m going to freely admit that artificers are the class I have the least handle on, but let’s see what we can come up with …

Artillerists, with the little tiny hand cannon, always give me a civil war/western sort of vibe. Add the magic, the ‘eldritch’ cannon and, particularly with the warforged, make them a robot, and we get a very pulpy Weird War sort of feeling. So. I feel like we play with some western tropes here? A huge, slender figure, grey as dust, stoic as metal, wearing some sort of cloak or poncho and a belt of tools. Calm. Polite. Very soft-spoken, very gentle. Wandering through the world in search of a cause, some higher meaning. But on the battlefield … there’s a sort of meditative glee. A sort of manic peace and purpose in the judicious distribution of wrath. This artificer came out of a warzone, they were built for a warzone, and they came out of it meditative, gentle and scarred. They carve things, they construct things, they make things. They enjoy the sensation of creation. But destruction is where they find their true peace. And, knowing this about themselves, they’re searching for some righteous cause to lend this destruction to. If they must find battle to find their true self, at least let it be for a good cause. I don’t know, I just feel like this is a robot gunslinger from a weird western. A weaponsmith, a riflemaker, who walked out of war knowing it had broken them, and just looking for a good war to spend themselves in. They’ll have named themselves either something very blunt, or something very biblical. Retribution. Fate. And they’re very polite, and they’re very gentle, and they use their woodcarver’s tools to make toys for children when they’re stopped over at a town. But the only time you ever see them smiling, a serene metallic grin, is in the midst of battle, with their little cannon spitting fire in their hands.

The other one that springs to mind for a warforged is the alchemist artificer. Because it feels … the experimental, biological nature of the alchemist subclass, on a non-biological creature, reads like a sort of alien fascination? “What are you squishy things made of? What can I put in a bottle to affect you? Here, darling, test this for me, would you?” But the amount of healing spells and beneficial effects make it a more benevolent sort of experimentation. “I don’t want to hurt you, goodness no! I just … don’t entirely know how you all work? But I’ll figure it out! Here, I’m sure I’ve got it right this time!” There’s this lovely feeling of this spindly, alien, serene thing that is trying to help you, to make things that will make you better or faster or healthier or stronger, but it’s just … there’s some kinks to work out. They’re getting there! Honest! I feel this subclass works so well for a sort of … ethically dubious but broadly well-intentioned mad scientist sort of robot hero. “This would be so much easier if I could just cast mending on you. But! Never fear! I have bent all my considerable intelligence to the matter of understanding how you work, how to make you better. I’m getting there, don’t you worry! I’ll have you all flying and fit as fiddles in no time! (Do humanoids normally turn into fiddles? Are musical instruments usually very fit? Hmm. I should check that …)”

Omg hii!! The answer is I really enjoyed it, and I'm actually about two-fifths through tyk now! Jby is only narrowly my second favorite, omg, I'm so obsessed with how he's the type of catcoded character who quietly kills for you and then bleeds out to the side without a word... shaking him. Why are you like this jby!!!! (Wu xi claims first place because I am truly just so endeared by how direct he is, and jby deserves someone like that!!!)

I'll admit that I was actually lukewarm on qi ye for a good portion of its run in part because I was expecting more to come from the entire fact that jby is a reincarnator-- I thought we'd get to learn more about his past life and how it shaped him to be the person he is as we know him, and I feel that the expected foreknowledge played less of a role than I expected it would in a reincarnation story... but in the end, the characters really pulled it all together for me, I was just so strongly charmed by them all!!! And I LOVED the ending, I thought it was the perfect cap to jby's story!!! Lying liars who lie fr 🥰🥰🥰 Xiyuan is soo this post to me :)
