Raffles: It's Pride Month, Inspector. You know what that means.
Mackenzie: Jesus fucking christ, Mr. Raffles, no. There are only so many times I can convince the Yard you and Mr. Manders are just friends.

Sorry to bother but can we get more of the cast's personalities or some short description about it or will it be a bit of a spoiler for the story? Thank you! And keep up the great work!
You’re not a bother at all! It’s wonderful to have people interested in this story. To answer your questions…
In a world beneath our own, after the horrors of World War 1, a string of murders in the seaside city of Saltscratch force Sage Locke, a brilliant if unorthodox consulting detective, to infiltrate the Bloody Hearts, a notorious criminal gang that fights to rule the island rats have claimed for themselves. Of course, given his personal history with the leader, Padraic Regal, that’s going to be bloody difficult…
A murder mystery with dark romances, betrayal and bloodshed, gangsters and outcasts, steamy scenes and social commentary, featuring a cast of queer rodents. The sea washes away much, but not your sins…
Welcome to Ratterrock.
And as for our characters, here’s the core cast as our story begins:
Tumblr media
Sage Locke: A brilliant and unorthodox consulting detective, Locke finds it far easier to deal with data and dangerous criminal investigations than society and sentiment. His life is his work, and he has gained both admiration and adversaries.
Tumblr media
Padraic Regal: The eldest sibling of the Regal family and the leader of the fearsome gang the Bloody Hearts, Padraic is determined to get the power and respect his name deserves by any means necessary. With his staggering intelligence, endless charisma and utter ruthlessness, he makes a fearsome enemy but a far more dangerous friend.
Tumblr media
Sorcha Regal: Like the diamonds she favors, Sorcha is dazzling, cool and always polished, her stunning beauty only matched by her cunning and charm. As the second in command of the Bloody Hearts, she has earned her reputation as the most dangerous woman on Ratterrock.
Tumblr media
Lorcan Regal: A born brawler, Lorcan is the rowdy and reckless muscle to the Bloody Hearts, happily obeying the commands of his eldest siblings. Ferocious in all his appetites - boxing or booze, men or women - Lorcan is all heart and endlessly loyal to his family.
Tumblr media
Randall Clifford: The Chief Inspector of the Saltscratch Police Force, Clifford is determined that the criminal underworld won’t escape the power of the law. He handles both his position and the unusual methods of one Sage Locke with well earned confidence and efficiency, and is a well respected figure.
Tumblr media
Bogdan Nightshade: The stern and stoic leader of the Night Court colony, Bogdan isn’t one for trifling distractions, keeping his time occupied with ensuring his family's safety and stability. Between helping his beloved mother and keeping his wild brother out of trouble, Bogdan doesn’t lower his grim guard for anything or anyone.
Tumblr media
Casimir Nightshade: An unfortunate incident with some downed wires left Casimir wildly unpredictable and deeply dangerous both to himself and others, much to the concern of his eldest brother. Utterly uninhibited, Casimir tends to bring chaos wherever he goes, whether he intends to or not.
Tumblr media
Marilla Mackenzie: The only child of one of Saltscratch’s most wealthy and esteemed families, Rilla is a free spirit who wants nothing more than to live life on her own terms: dancing, flirting, and fun. As one of the most beautiful and blue blooded of Saltcratch’s debutants, she’s looking at a future that doesn’t have any of that.
Tumblr media
Luella Woodmouse: Quiet, competent and determinedly demure, Luella works as a governess to the upper class of Saltscratch and prides herself on her calmness and courtesy. Despite her best efforts to keep out of trouble, she will often end up on “adventures” with one Miss Marilla Mackenzie.
Tumblr media
Brigid O’Broin: Tough, gruff and fearsome, Brig is a dockworker and boxer who has had to fight her whole life to survive. Once the best mate of one Lorcan Regal, she keeps to herself and out of trouble as best she can.
More characters will be joining the story, and we’ll be adding character profiles on our official website when it is out of development, which will be updated as the story continues.
Thank you so much for the questions!

personally i believe that inspector mackenzie is fully aware that bunny and raffles violate the labouchere amendment safely, often, and extremely well but he’s just so hellbent on catching them for burglary that he doesn’t care

Inspector Lestrade and Inspector Mackenzie met in the academy. They were both new to London. Mackenzie took a series of pictures of Lestrade when he was still a bobby on his beat, standing in doorways, backlit by gas lamp, looking very regal and proud in his uniform. Lestrade has always loved to have his picture taken so that won him over. At that time, Lestrade resided with an aunt and Mackenzie resided at a boarding house but they decided to seek lodgings together. They reside in a basement flat. Its perpetually damp but Lestrade endeavors to keep it immaculate.
Mackenzie assists Lestrade in his private detective work. Mackenzie is more intelligent but less ambitious while Lestrade is guided by dogged determination and passion.

Happy Birthday the Scottish actor, Alexander “Sandy” Morton born 24th March 1945 in Glasgow.
Morton became one of Scotland’s most popular arch-villains when he was cast as Andy Semple in the long running soap opera Take the High Road.
Career highlights include the title role in Raindog Theatre’s critically acclaimed Scots rendition of Shakespeare’s Macbeth, directed by Robert Carlyle; R.P. McMurphy in One flew Over the Cuckoo’s nest, also directed by Robert Carlyle. He has also appeared in three different series of Taggart as different characters and was ithe pnly character to appear in every single episode of Monarch of the Glen as the servant, Golly Mackenzie. In Nicholas Winding Refn’s Valhalla Rising, he featured as Barde, the chieftain and temporary owner of One Eye.
Has appeared with actor Clive Owen in TV series Second Sight 1 & 2, and Mike Hodges films I’ll Sleep when I’m dead, and Croupier.
Alexander recently played the Prince of Darkness in the Dracula-inspired Robert Forrest BBC radio play Voyage of the Demeter. For BBC Radio he had the title role in Jekyll and Hyde, playing both parts. Also on radio, he was the first actor to play Inspector Rebus in the first adaptation of Ian Rankin’s Rebus series of books.
And on the small screen Sandy has been in the excellent Luther with Idris Elba and Shetland, he was also cast as a rival to Lenny Murdoch in our Scottish soap River City, as Billy Kennedy.

Mackenzie had at least one of the photos he took of Raffles during "Gentlemen and Players" developed so that he could put it up on a wall in his flat and glare at it while he paced around.

Raffles fans, if you haven't already, you need to listen to the Imagination Theater's adaptation.
There's this one scene where Mackenzie explains how another thief had an accomplice cause a distraction so he could steal a diamond.
And then Mackenzie's like, "The Gentleman Thief would never stoop so low."
Raffles: Thank you, Mackenzie.
Mackenzie:...
Bunny: Raffles!
Raffles: For explaining how you caught him.

Douglas Henshall as Taran MacQuarrie (Outlander/Starz) and Jimmy Perez (Shetland/BBC)

Bill Paterson as Ned Gowan (Outlander/Starz) and James Perez (Shetland/BBC)

Grant O’Rourke as Rupert MacKenzie (Outlander/Starz) and Jamie Narey (Shetland/BBC)
3 of 52 and counting…
Overheard (via text) in November:
Bill Paterson (Ned Gowan in Outlander) makes an appearance in Shetland. Sorry if this is old news. — GreyMatterMaelstrom
Love Shetland and was gutted when Douglas Henshall announced he was leaving. As far as actors go, the more episodes you watch, the more Outlanders you'll see. I used to keep a list, but stopped updating it for no good reason. — Brian-in-Finance
Decided to update the list. You might need a magnifying glass to read it. 🔍 Appreciate notification of errors and omissions.
Actors in both Outlander and Shetland

Remember when Brian Fraser married Flora MacDonald in Shetland Season 6? Remember when Anne Kidd played Grannie Wilson the purported corpse in Outlander and Dr Cora McLean the pathologist in Shetland? Remember when Torin the blacksmith’s “It’ll cost ye” sounded just like Connor McKay the Health and Safety inspector’s “But it might take some time?”
This one’s for you @greymattermaelstrom 😂

I can tell Jennifer Ashley did not foresee making Lloyd Fellows, intrepid Scotland Yard inspector and Secret Illegitimate MacKenzie, a hero; partly because of how he single white female'd his brothers in the first book, and partly because she named him Lloyd Fellows.
But a book he has, and now she has to steadfastly stick to his last name, because it's not.... great. But it's also not LLOYD.

"You’ll be hearing more of this, Mr. P 34!"
Mackenzie is here referring to the poor police constable by a feature that most uniformed officers in the UK and Ireland have, namely his collar number. Although these days they tend to be known as shoulder numbers.
Permit me to demonstrate via this image:
Tumblr media
This is Police Constable C 333. His actual name is not recorded in this c.1948, but we'll call him Robert Smith, or Bobby to his friends.
The letter C represents the division of the Metropolitan Police he is assigned to. In this case, C covered the West End of London. The Met has gone through a lot of command changes over the decades - today this would be Central West Basic Command Unit and he'd have AW on his shoulders, not his collar.
These numbers allow for identification of the officer; the public would know who to compliment or complain about. There have been cases of officers policing protests not wearing these, which caused a fair amount of upset when it was reported.
If he was using a radio, he would be Charlie Three-Three-Three. Or just "Three-Three-Three" for a local chat.
If he was to sign a statement, he'd be PC Smith 333 C. He would also put that in his email signature today.
Sergeants would have three V stripes on their sleeves and now their epaulettes outside of a dress uniform situation. They would also have their numbers on their uniform.
Police Community Support Officers (civilians wearing a uniform, basically) and Special Constables (volunteer officers with full powers, but unpaid) have shoulder numbers.
Inspectors and above just have their rank insignia, no numbers.
If Bobby moved to another division, he might keep his numbers, but he would have to change his letter. He would go down to two numbers if promoted to Sergeant.
****
Outside of London, you will usually just see four numbers, with no letters.
Bobby would also have a warrant card, akin to the US police badge, which he would use in a plain clothes or off-duty situation. If he were suspended for excessive force, he would have to hand it over.
****
Now P 34 is a bit outside his area.
This is the 1888 police divisions map, also relevant for Sherlock Holmes:
Tumblr media
(Source: https://gmic.co.uk/topic/64457-metropolitan-police-divisional-areas-1888/)
The blue area represents the boundaries of the London County Council, although the City of London was excluded from that - it retains its own local government and police, who have their numbers on their sleeves today.
You can see the Whitechapel area under H and the Docklands area, plus points east under K.
The red area was the then boundaries of the Metropolitan Police District. You can see that it excluded my manor of Havering, then under the auspices of Essex Police. This went quite a way out, beyond even the modern Greater London boundaries in some places, although in 2000 it was aligned to match those. Havering was KD until recently, it is now part of EA.
As a further fun note, the MPD boundaries were also those of the coal tax area. Any coal brought within this area, which also included the City, was subject to tax until 1890, when this was abolished due to its unpopularity in the new suburbs. The boundaries were marked by obelisks or white concrete posts, many of which are still in situ, although not always easy to spot, to remind people of the tax. The railway or river transport companies usually collected this anyway.
Anyway, P Division covers the Camberwell, Lewisham area. Quite why Mackenzie has grabbed this bloke from there for this operation is a mystery. While P 34 could easily go outside his area for public order stuff, like a parade or dealing with a protest; during the miners' strike of 1984-85, Metropolitan Police officers were used in protecting those who were going into work from their striking colleagues, as well as beating up the latter.
Perhaps he was just doing it for the LOLs.
****
As a final note, police officers are also starting to wear name badges. This was somewhat controversial as some officers feared being targeted as a result.
