Lucian Freud Herbarium
Giovanni Aloi

As intimate and meticulous as his revered portraits, Lucian Freud's magnificent paintings and drawings of plant life are gathered for the first time in book form. Lucian Freud's portraits are known for their spectacular detail and unflinching gaze. Although Freud brought the same qualities to his paintings and drawings of plants, flowers, and landscapes, these are largely unknown. This elegant book shows how working with plants emboldened Freud to experiment with style and composition. Reproduced in sumptuous plates that allow readers to indulge in exquisite detail, seventy-five works--including Two Plants, Bananas, Cyclamen, The Painter's Garden, and Interior at Paddington--reveal Freud's singular approach to plant life. Readers unfamiliar with this aspect of Freud's work will find many similarities to his portraits--earthy palettes, unconventional rawness, and assiduous attention to detail. From the delicate realism of the cyclamens' petals to the bold brushstrokes that immortalize his overgrown garden, readers will appreciate Freud's ability to portray plants in new and personal ways. Comparative illustrations from throughout art history accompany essays on the history of plants in art and an appreciation of Freud's oeuvre. This monograph is a tremendous contribution to Freud's legacy, one that will enrich his admirers' discernment while also introducing his thoroughly original depictions of plants to a new audience.

There are few things so intrinsically linked with old-fashioned British culture as the red telephone box.
These became synonymous with paths all over the country during the 20th century, but inevitably, the introduction of mobile phones led to its decline from the 1980s onwards.
After decades of abandonment - with many boxes left in a derelict state - action is being taken by a local restoration company that set up the nation's largest 'telephone box graveyard' in Merstham in Surrey.
Unicorn Restorations proudly restore these iconic boxes back to their former glory following a period of them rusting away.
Staff spend up to 30 hours stripping each old kiosk, repainting them in the identical shades of red once stipulated by the General Post Office, and putting in new glass to complete the look, at the site just outside Redhill.
Once rejuvenated, they sell for a variety of prices ranging from just under £4,000 to as much as £20,000, with the price being higher for the older designs.
These include the three classic models of red telephone kiosk: the K2, the K6 and the K8.
The K6, which was designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott to commemorate the Silver Jubilee of King George V's coronation in 1935, is largely identified as THE red telephone box.
60,000 examples of these were installed across Britain, which is why the K6 has come to represent what many regard as the typical red phone box.
Tumblr media
The K2 is deemed as the original phone box having been created in 1926, while the K8 was introduced in 1968 and was a radical change to suit the mood of the Sixties in a more futuristic design.
This was the last of the red kiosks to be produced and very few are in service.
The restoration experts are also able to redesign the interior of these kiosks and offer the ability to personalise the dial centre to carry your current number, but with the old exchange or with a memorable number from the past.
As stated on their website, they supplied the landmarks that you see across the UK and the heart of London such as in Trafalgar Square, Piccadilly Circus, The Tower of London and Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.
They also carried out many prestigious kiosk restorations for BT, The Corporation of London and English Heritage.
Tumblr media
📷: The phone boxes were originally planned to be painted yellow before the iconic cherry red was chosen (Image: Unicorn Restorations)
Their handiwork has even been showcased on the big screen, having supplied period pieces for film and TV productions such as Harry Potter, Paddington and the John Lewis Christmas adverts.
The necessity for these landmarks may have become non-existent in the modern era, but it's perhaps reassuring to know that they're going on to enjoy a second life.
During a 2016 interview with the Daily Mail, photographer Nicolas Ritter stated how he visited the yard back when he was just starting out as an assistant in 2012.
He said:
"Being at the telephone graveyard was a great experience for me. It felt like a journey back into the history of the country as the phone boxes are such a unique symbol of British culture."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
These easily-spotted, brightly coloured boxes were once adored by Brits; by the time the 1980s rolled around, there were more than 73,000 dotted around.
Sadly, those numbers started to dwindle shortly after, with just 21,000 reported to be left standing today.
Thanks to Unicorn Restorations, though, it's clear to see that British people still have a great fondness for the old-fashioned phone box - just maybe not for their original, intended purpose.

Thoughts on the Willy winks trailer? Fan of Timothy‘s, and I know it’s just a little trailer, but he doesn’t seem silly enough if that makes sense lol. Do you have any thoughts?
youtube
I generally like (albeit don't love) Timothee too, but I totally get what you're saying. He seems really flat in this trailer, and hopefully it's just the editing and seeing the scenes out of context? It's a lot to play a role made iconic by Gene Wilder who oozed not just charisma but the interior life of a character. You always believed that Gene's characters were really alive and sharp and fully realised, whereas I can't say I necessarily feel that way about Timothee's acting and I think it really, really shows here.
Still, I'd rather a prequel that tries to tell a new story than another remake or adaptation, and Paul King's an interesting director between Paddington and The Mighty Boosh, so hopefully it's just a lacklustre trailer and the the film itself is a good one.

that post made me think about things, so here are some wheelchair thoughts from someone who recently started using one (im ambulatory, which means i can physically walk and do not use a wheelchair 24/7, personally i use it because walking can cause me to feel faint and get migraines and i was housebound due to this before; i don’t know why this happens but am waiting to have a neurology assessment)
wheelchairs are great! like i said, i used to be basically housebound, and when i did leave the house i had to really plan where i was going and what i was doing. i’d basically have to make sure i was walking for no more than 5 minutes a day, total. but since i started using my wheelchair, i havent had to consider that at all because i’m fine to be out for hours and hours and to travel miles and miles.
basically wheelchairs are anti-isolation. being able to go out and spend time with people and visit nice places is incredible. i wasn’t able to freely do that for 8 or so years.
when you’re in a wheelchair, you are small. i am already short, but the wheelchair really takes it to another level. it’s like i’m seeing the world like a child would, or something. also i’ve been more perceptive to my environment, maybe because i’m lower to the ground, which is interesting.
you feel everything. a lot of places are technically wheelchair accessible, but my god the flooring is not pleasant. cobbles are my worst enemy. god forbid you’re sensitive to travel sickness. for me this can trigger migraines, which is not ideal.
my wheelchair is pushed by someone else because i cant afford an electric one and one that i push would give me the same issues as walking. being completely under the control of another person like that is scary! roads freaked me out so much the first time, because i felt so vulnerable when i couldn’t control myself, and the person pushing doesn’t necessarily think about this because they are in control
expanding on that, being unable to control where i go can be frustrating. sometimes i want to go left when the path splits, not right, and even though there’s no real difference it’s frustrating to not be able to make that choice for myself. sometimes i want to go slower, sometimes i want to stop to look at something, but i can’t just make those decisions for myself, i have to communicate them first
again on accessability, a lot of people have wheelchair lifts for stairs, but to use them you have to find a member of staff to get help (or i assume you do; i have no idea how they work!), and honestly... it’s just not worth it for small staircases. i don’t love going down the stairs in a wheelchair, but it’s faster. ramps are better.
so many shops are inaccessible due to the interior design. when i was in paddington station, 2/7 of the shops were accessible to me, and both of the ones that were accessible were chains. the others had corners that my wheelchair couldn’t fit around, and many stores also don’t have doors that open wide enough for a wheelchair to comfortably fit in. also often shops do technically have enough room, but it’s tight so i’m constantly anxious that i’m going to knock something over
kids look at me more. that’s just something cute i noticed. they’re very curious, and they rarely say anything, but they’re really often looking over and staring. i don’t know if it’s because they’re not used to wheelchairs or if it’s just because i’m closer to their eye level, but it’s cute
people are a lot kinder than i expected. before i used it i was extremely anxious because i am young and i had heard stories about ambulatory users being harassed when they stand. i know that this is a thing that happens to people, but this hasn’t been my experience yet, at least. most people who comment on my share assume that i’m able to stand, but aren’t at all judgemental about it, and i haven’t had any rude comments or invasive questions yet. i’m sure it’ll happen eventually, but people being kind really helped with my anxiety
that being said some people are also very patronising. they don’t try to be, and i don’t know if it’s because i look like a 12 year old, but my god people seem to infantalise me even more than normal in the chair. i appreciate they’re trying to be nice, but me being unable to walk long distances doesn’t actually mean that i’m a child, weirdly!
please dear god clean up dog shit. i am begging you. it’s horrible getting dog shit on the wheels of the wheelchair. it can be hard to avoid sometimes; at least when you’re walking you have more control over your feet. my wheels don’t have the same level of flexibility of movement
it hurts my butt to be sitting for extended periods of time :/
that’s all i’ve got for now, but i’ve had a lot of thoughts, and a lot of them have been about things i hadn’t really heard about before. i don’t know if this is useful to anyone, but it’s stuff i would’ve liked to have heard more about before

”Of course. Under your hat is, as we know, the perfect spot for a marmalade sandwich.” KCIII probably has an interior pocket in all of his custom tailored suits lined with aluminum so that the marmalade sandwich doesn’t ruin the fabric but he’s also prepared for Paddington (or Louis). One must plan accordingly. It’s like a tactical suit John Wick wears but instead of weapons it’s sandwiches.
Like a permanent sandwich bag. Genius.

I recently just watched “The Salty Sponge” and I have some thoughts
First off, AUTJFHWWTKJSTTUGWEYIKGRRPWFKFBDJSUYUUUYRUYYII THAT WAS SO CUTE🥺🥺🥺🥺
Spongebob’s so pure he literally turned certified tough guys into legit teddy bears I cannot
Loved seeing the interior to the Salty Spitoon
Idk if ya’ll noticed this lil detail, where Spongebob STEPPED OVER SOME ICE BC THAT’S LITERALLY A NOD TO THE SALTY SPITOON’S DEBUT EPISODE WHERE SPONGE SLIPPED ON AN ICE CUBE AND LANDED HIMSELF IN THE HOSPITAL AND HE DOESN’T WANNA MAKE THAT MISTAKE AGAIN
I love how the boss is a female anglerfish cuz a lot of the pictures we see are actually females. Accurate, as always!
I like how they had pictures of Sandy during the bull riding scene
Basically what happened with Mrs. Puff in this episode:
Puff: I fear no man, but that….
Spongebob: :3
Puff: It scares me
LIKE SHE REALLY SAID THAT KDGDGSGEHTJFHSGDGH
Also love how the back of Mrs. Puff’s jacket is “Big Fat Meanie”. Guess she remembered Patrick’s drawing and was like “Bet”
THE PART WHERE THE BIKER FISH WALKED INTO THE SOFTY SPITOON AND ACTUALLY LOOKED OUTSIDE TO MAKE SURE HE WASN’T AT WEENIE HUT JR’S HSHFHDHDHDGDGRGDGF
Also I made a thing
Tumblr media
Squidward actually saying “I love you” omfg
ALSO CLOWN SQUIDWARD IS SOMETHING I NEVER THOUGHT I’D SEE HELP
How much you wanna bet the drawings at the end were done by the rest of the patrons? awwwwww
In conclusion, Spongebob has the same energy as Winnie the Pooh and Paddington, in this scenario. This episode really reminded me of that scene where Paddington was sent to prison and the other prisoners ended up loving him to pieces

</> Data, the emotional support android™ </>
Tumblr media
Hugh had been doing an admirable job at adapting to the life aboard a starship, sequestrated from the Collective, but Data knew how difficult and challenging integrating yourself into a society where you were unique, could be. Therefore, he had decided to take his new friend to the holodeck to watch a motion picture with him in an authentic theatre.
‘What genre appeals to you, Hugh?’ he asked as the holodeck doors disengaged, retracted into the walls and revealed the interior of a dimly-lit theatre.
The android had already established that the boy might prefer non-violent pictures. Perhaps something with animated animals, or abundant cheerfulness and song. Something that would make him smile.
‘I have made a selection for you,’ he began, glancing down at Hugh as they ascended the stairs to a row of seats in the middle of the theatre. ‘Wall-E. A film about a lone robot on Earth who, after a long time, finds himself a robot friend. Lightyear. A film about a space ranger who tries to vanquish his enemies and is accompanied by a robot cat. Pinocchio. A film about a wooden boy who wants to become a flesh and blood person. Aristocats. A film about singing cats. Paddington. A film about a mischievous bear in London. E.T. A film about an extraterrestrial lifeform that is found on Earth and is aided by children who are trying to bring him back home.’
@my-timing-is-digital (Data)
Hugh carefully considered the options presented to him. His only knowledge of London came from his time in the Collective, so he shunted Paddington away. He would not want to watch something he only had an understanding of because of the Collective. Lightyear sounded nice, but he worried the Borg would be an enemy the ranger would have to vanquish. The Aristocats sounded rather cute. So did E.T. However, they didn't pop out as something he would like to focus on at that moment.
That left Pinocchio and Wall-E. Pinocchio was very relevant to how he felt. He felt disconnected from the others on the ship. Not quite a child, not quite an adult, definitely something different than and apart from everyone else. There was nowhere he quite fit in.
Except for when he was with Data. Data was a real friend. The ex Borg drone and the android. Two robots of sorts who had become friends.
"Wall-E," Hugh answered. "Because I think he's like me."
