INTERVIEWER: When it comes to Claudia, post-S2 finale there’s a lot of talk about who saved Louis, but not always as much about why Claudia wasn’t saved, you know? And uh you’ve said in the past that like Lestat was too weak to save both of them, or all three of them– Madeleine included, but how does Louis contend with this reality in 2022? Having to hold these really complicated feelings of “I’m alive because of this, but Claudia is dead”, how does he contend with this when he sees Lestat again in 2022? JA: I don’t know if Louis is necessarily there yet. I don’t know if he has really– Louis is complicated. Jacob (I) would’ve preferred that Lestat saved Claudia. I don’t know, it’s probably a confusing thing for Louis that he wanted to live, but he wanted her to live. In 2022 when he and Lestat see each other again, I think it’s more about him accepting vampirism as a gift more than it is about Claudia’s– it is about Claudia’s death, but I think it’s more “We’re both still not okay, right…? With what happened, you still miss her, you still think about her constantly?” and then the reconciliation is more about “My life began when I met you… This version of my life began when I met you and I didn’t appreciate that until this moment so thank you for that” But I’m not entirely sure that Louis has kind of accepted the choice that was made there [re: Lestat not saving Claudia] INTERVIEWER: I mean it was very new information to him, so it’d be shocking if he did, you know? He left Dubai real quick to reunite with Lestat after he discovered this information. JA: Him displaying her dress like that, by the way, I think is also in part “Well I survived, but I have to remember her. I have to keep her here [gestures to his head], I can’t keep trying to push her out of my brain for self-preservation. I have to hold space for her and for Paul.” So it’s a version of acceptance… INTERVIEWER: Yeah he has accepted that he has to carry this with him. Forever. He does not repress it anymore. JA: Yeah, yeah.
