Advanced Image Robotics (AIR), creators of the AIR One® smart gimbal and the world’s first cloud-native remote production video capture platform, today announced support for select Sony digital cinema cameras and mirrorless still cameras.

Supported cameras include the Sony FX3 full frame digital cinema camera, Sony Alpha 1, and Sony A9 III.

To fit larger camera form factors, AIR created the AIR One X, a wide-body version of the award-winning AIR One. Users benefit from AIR’s fully remote PTZ capabilities, self-leveling head, small footprint, and plug-and-play networking. They will also benefit from Sony camera control protocols integrated into the AIR iOS app, and support for a wide range of Sony lenses up to 300mm in length.

“We are thrilled to finally announce support for Sony cameras,” said AIR CEO Kevin McClave. “Our user base has been asking for the superior imaging quality Sony brings, and now they can have it along with the AIR platform’s ease-of-use, flexibility, and cost-reducing cloud production technology.”

Support for Sony cameras was developed in cooperation with Sony’s Pro AV team in Yokohama and the Associated Press for use in remote image capture. AIR One X debuted at a major track and field event in Budapest, August 2023, causing a noticeable stir in the lineup. AIR One X was also seen in the grid at UFC 295 and UFC 296, remotely capturing incredible images of the action. AIR One X will be in wide use at additional major sports events this year in Phoenix, London and Paris.

The company was founded in 2007 by CEO David Steinberger, CTO John D. Roberts, and Peter Jaffe. Subsequent to winning the business plan competition at New York University, the company received seed financing from Kit McQuiston, New York Angels and Rose Tech Ventures.[12]

In May 2016, the company launched "comiXology Unlimited," a subscription service that gives access thousands of comics to read from most major publishers for a monthly fee of $5.99, however Marvel and DC are not included.[13][14] ComiXology Unlimited, is an online subscription service by ComiXology, a cloud-based platform for digital comics The service offers more than four thousand issues to its subscribers and launched on May 24, 2016.[15] ComiXology Unlimited contains a selection of titles from Image Comics, Dark Horse, IDW Publishing, BOOM! Studios, Dynamite Entertainment, Kodansha Comics, Oni Press, Valiant Entertainment, Archie Comics, Fantagraphics Books, Humanoids, Action Lab Entertainment, Aspen Comics, Magnetic Press, Zenescope Entertainment and more.[14] According to the company, ComiXology Unlimited offers the widest subscription selection of digital comics in the world. ComiXology Unlimited is currently available in the U.S.[16] and ComiXology plans to expand to other regions in the future.[17] ComiXology updates the content included in the program on a monthly basis.[18]

ComiXology's patent-pending Guided View technology allows readers to read through comics in full screen or from panel-to-panel, mimicking the natural movement of the eye as though readers were experiencing reading a print comic book.[19]

In June 2018, the company announced ComiXology Originals, an initiative to publish creator-owned titles.[20]

Content relationships

ComiXology currently holds exclusive distribution rights on iOS to DC Comics digital content through branded apps and comics by comiXology.[citation needed]

ComiXology’s first original digital title, Box 13, has been acquired by Red 5 Comics for print distribution. ComiXology also commissioned a sequel to the comic, titled The Pandora Project. Both Box 13 titles were created by the Harvey Award-winning team behind the Zuda Comics title High Moon - David Gallaher and Steve Ellis[23]

Moon Girl is an original comic published by ComiXology, based on a public domain comics character. The creative team on Moon Girl is Tony Trov, Johnny Zito, and Rahzzah.[24]

In 2018, ComiXology, under the ComiXology Originals banner, announced four new projects, namely: Savage Game, Superfreaks, Elephantmen, and Ask For Mercy.[25]

Controversies

In March 2013 during SXSW, an issue arose when Marvel Comics attempted to distribute over 700 comics for free via ComiXology for the Marvel #1 promotion.[26] The ComiXology servers were unable to keep up with user demand, preventing users from obtaining the promotional comics, as well as from reading comics they had purchased. This led to a formal apology and the promotions being delayed.[27] Soon afterward, the promotion was offered again and was reported to have "worked flawlessly".[28] In the aftermath of the ensuing difficulties some users have raised concerns regarding access to their files should the platform ever shut down.[29] To respond to this concern, in July 2014 selected publishers allow for DRM-free downloads of their comics.

On April 9, 2013, writer Brian K. Vaughan issued a statement[30] on Fiona Staples's blog that Apple Inc. had prohibited the sale of Saga #12 through iOS. This statement was quickly reported by the media, the impetus for the "ban" was speculated to be in response to two panels that depicted oral sex between men in a small, inset image violated Apple's restrictions on sexual content. The issue was available through the ComiXology and Image Comics digital comics website stores. The ban was criticized by artists and writers, who pointed to similarly explicit content in previous issues and in other works sold through iTunes. William Gibson and others suggested that the restriction could have occurred specifically because the drawings at issue involved gay sex.[31] A day later, Comixology announced that it had been they, not Apple, who had chosen not to make the issue available, based on their interpretation of Apple's rules, and that after receiving clarification from Apple, the issue would be sold on iOS devices.[32] Brian K. Vaughan then issued a statement apologizing for the miscommunication.[33]

After Amazon's controversial purchase of ComiXology, the company removed the option of purchasing comics inside the iOS app. This change resulted in immediate internet backlash from the comic book reader community, criticizing Amazon's acquisition of the distributor.[34] This change to ComiXology's structure has made readers concerned about the future of digital comic distribution.[35]

Reception

In September 2011, ComiXology's Comics application was the highest-grossing application in the App Store, and together with the branded applications for other comics publishers, accounted for a majority of the five top-grossing iPhone apps.

Having consistently ranked as one of the top-grossing iPad apps in iTunes, ComiXology was called the "iTunes of comics" by The New York Times in May 2012.[36] In 2011, comiXology ranked as number 10 in the top 20 grossing iPad apps for year and also powered two other apps in the top 20 — Marvel and DC.[37] In 2012, comiXology was ranked as the number 3 top grossing iPad app — the only app from 2011 to stay on the top ten list.[38]

Press reception for the launch of ComiXology Unlimited was mostly positive, with journalists and bloggers focusing on the low price point, the 30-day free trial and the diverse collection of independent comics, graphic novels, and manga available at launch.[39] Some critics pointed out, however, that only some trades in the series are available in the program,[40] undermining the “unlimited” aspect of the subscription.

The series follows a 17-year-old boy, who, after the death of his mother, moves in with the Codys, a criminal family clan governed by matriarch Janine “Smurf” Cody. Robson plays Craig Cody, the middle Cody son with a predilection for drugs and extreme behavior. He stars alongside Shawn Hatosy (Southland), Jake Weary (It Follows) and Finn Cole (Peaky Blinders). BGN caught up with the former Vikings star about his role on Animal Kingdom, his SXSW experience, and what he likes to do in his spare time. Black Girl Nerds: Welcome to Black Girl Nerds, Ben. Ben Robson: Thank you for having me. BGN: Thank you for joining us. So for people that don’t know too much about Animal Kingdom, tell us a little about the show and what separates it from other shows and stories out there about crime families. Ben Robson: So Animal Kingdom is about a dysfunctional crime family in the underworld of Oceanside which is just north of San Diego. There are four brothers who live together under the matriarchal character Smurf, played by the amazing Ellen Barkin. And what happens is her sister dies of an overdose and her nephew, Jay, has to come into the family and starts learning about this whole new world that he enters, our ways and motivations and the way that we live, which is obviously a pretty different way to how he has been brought up. Then you kind of see the whole show through his eyes. How wild and crazy and weird and fun we all are at the same time. BGN: Cool. And how are you liking Texas? How are you liking Austin? Ben Robson: I love it here! I was very spoiled in terms of coming to Austin City Limits last year. BGN: Oh, nice. Ben Robson: I had a great time, I got to see a lot of bands that I wanted, so I got to go on the boats down on the lakes and had that experience in lovely warm weather. BGN: Yes. Ben Robson: This is slightly different today. This is slightly colder today. You know, it’s great. It’s amazing to be a part of the festival and be a part of the community and meet everyone and make new friends and really understand all the different aspects of what we are doing. And it is a great city to be hosting at. BGN: And what are you most excited about the upcoming premier of your show? Ben Robson: Honestly, I am just super excited for people to see it. I think it is a really explosive entry into the season. It carries on basically straight on from the end of the first which was a very poignant ending and then we have a beginning to the next, which is the development of the fracturing of the relationship with Smurf and all the boys finally getting what they wish for. Trying to prove that their sort of the man and they are capable and have to start taking a lot more responsibility for their actions. Its really fun to watch it all unfold as it goes on. It gets darker and more twisted, more crazy. It should be fun to watch. BGN: Your character is a bit of an adventure junkie.  That’s putting it mildly! Ben Robson: Yeah, yeah! Absolutely! BGN: So tell me a little bit more about him, about your character Craig. Ben Robson: Yeah, he is that guy that you always want to be around on a night out or that sort of guy that is up for anything and someone you want to be around but maybe not live his life. He acts on impulse. He doesn’t really tend to question things till afterwards, which is what he has to get himself out of in these predicaments that he has got himself in. He definitely has an addictive personality of chasing adrenaline and the next rush. Whether its sex or drugs or motorbikes or any kind of extremity is the way that he lives. It’s a lot of fun to play. It’s a a lot of fun to watch. And you know, I don’t think any one is reigning him in anytime soon. There is some part of this season where he realizes that he has to start taking on more responsibilities. So you will definitely see a new side of Craig that hasn’t been seen before, which I am excited for people to see. BGN: I am glad you said that because I was going to ask you would you like to hang out with your character on a Saturday night? Ben Robson: I would love to hang out with him on a Saturday night. I’m not sure I would want to try and keep up with him or maybe even help put him to bed. But I don’t feel like he is someone who needs that help anyway. BGN: Exactly. Ben Robson: For sure, I would love to. It’s always fun being around people who are free and spontaneous. You definitely have the most interesting stories and night and experiences with people like that. I think with Craig Cody, that is essentially what you are going to get every time. BGN: What’s the most spontaneous thing you have done? Ben Robson: Probably quite a few. Seeing as we are in Austin, I came to Austin City Limits deciding, I think within two hours of getting on the flight. I was out at a bar, booked my flight and I think I left the bar at two and I was on a plane at five a.m. and flew over, so that is one I could think of since we are in Austin. But there has been a few moments. I went to acting school without really telling anyone. Arrived in New York and didn’t even have anywhere to stay. That was another spontaneous one. Luckily it all worked out, but there has been a few moments. BGN: Yeah, I noticed things are like that sometimes when you just put it on the line. If you are going after something the universe finds a way of making it all work out. Ben Robson: That’s right, you got to put it out there and it will reward you. BGN: Yeah put it out there! Definitely. So what do you like to do in your spare time? Ben Robson: What do I like to do? I love surfing, which I have been doing a lot recently. Motorbikes, I’ve gotten into. I just got my own bike. BGN: This show is perfect for you. Ben Robson: So yeah. Well this show definitely got me into a lot more of the stuff I wanted to do, so that’s been great. I love reading. And hanging out, seeing people, enjoying being with people. BGN: You like to read? What is your favorite book? It’s hard to pick one sometimes. Ben Robson: Recently, The Alchemist was great. Shantaram was an amazing story. Shadow of the Wind, which I read, is another good one. Yeah, when you get a good book, it’s great. I mean, I also love watching movies and the rest but there is something about creating the whole world off the page. I find it super interesting, which I guess is kinda similar to acting. You get the script and you find your world. BGN: So in regards to Animal Kingdom, how do you prepare for your role? What do you do to get in the zone to portray your character? Ben Robson: Honestly, I think for me it was trying to get that aspect of freedom and spontaneity with Craig. And really pushing myself to do stuff that I have always wanted to try but then pushing it that to extra limits. So even on the bikes when its something I shouldn’t really be doing in terms of filming but then it’s like Craig Cody would do this and then, its amazing, you start pushing yourself further and you get that reward. As you were just saying. You put yourself into places and test yourself more, you don’t get that edge to push it that little bit further. I think for me that was a huge entry point into finding out who Craig was. I have read a lot of books about South Cal and try to really understand Oceanside and the area. In that kind of aspect and really just that surf culture. It is such a strong element of California and this family and the way that they live. It has a huge history of what’s become huge in skateboarding to surfing in today’s community. Yeah, there are a few entry points. BGN: So if you were to describe Animal Kingdom in three words, what words would you use? Ben Robson: Naughty. Wild, and Dark. BGN: Good! I like those words. Sounds like something, you know, I am definitely into. Ben Robson: It’s good fun to watch. It definitely covers a lot of stuff, but I enjoy reading on the page. Definitely covers the things I like to watch as well. BGN: So you know, we are Black Girl Nerds, so I have to ask you, what is one thing that you geek out over, that you nerd out over? Ben Robson: What am I nerding out over at the moment? I love anything that makes my life easier, so when the brand new iPhone comes out, it’s pretty great. Any app that gets me through from one thing to the next–new laptop, new iPads. I am kind of really digging Spotify at the moment. I loving moving playlists around. That’s what it is, isn’t it. Trying to find all these things. New video games, no virtual reality. I just did that for the first time the other day, that I would definitely geek out on. Apple Personalizes Healthcare With Digital Health Records

Forget an Apple a day keeping the doctor away. Apple is bringing the doctor and patient closer together by putting your health records on your phone, finally unlocking the massive potential of the iOS Health app to serve as an electronic health record platform.

The company today announced a beta version of iOS 11.3 that adds U.S. digital medical records and functionality to the Health app. The goal is to give people access to their medical data, to download their health records, store them safely and show them to a doctor, caregiver or friend.

“We view the future as consumers owning their own health data,” Apple COO Jeff Williams told CNBC. “Apple doesn’t see the data unless the consumer chooses to share it. It’s difficult to think about something more significant than health records. With your banking records, you can see every transaction and dollars spent, and yet my health is way more significant and I couldn’t put my finger on any of my lab information.”

Apple said the healthcare goal is not to sell more iOS devices but to augment the user experience, even as it promotes the Apple Watch as a health and fitness tool. “We’re hoping to enable richer conversations between doctor and patient,” said Sumbul Desai, Apple’s digital health lead.

The move towards electronic health records has been going on for some time, of course, including the Blue Button initiative that began at the U.S. Veterans’ Affairs department under former U.S. CTO Peter Levin. The movement towards paperless medical records and more digitally-connected patient/doctor relations is not only a U.S. initiative, but interoperability and security have been a hurdle to date.

Apple’s goal is to make it simple, elegant and meaningful. To set it up, simply open the Health app on an iOS device—iPhone, Apple Watch, iPad—to add a health provider, then tap to connect to Apple’s software system and access streaming data. An alert notifies the user when new information is available.

The natural concern on consumers’ minds will be privacy and security. The data on the health app is encrypted and protected through a user’s iPhone passcode and covers allergies, conditions, immunizations, lab results, medications, procedures and vitals.

To add to their peace of mind, Apple has been working with the electronic medical record specialists at Epic Systems, Cerner and AthenaHealth to make sure the record-keeping meets FHIR (Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources) standards, a protocol for exchanging electronic health records.

Kevin Lynch, Apple’s VP technology, said the e-record vendors “have been an enabling, and not a blocking factor, and we appreciate that.”

As CNBC notes, “Regulators and patient advocates have for years pushed for data-sharing standards within the medical sector to make it easier for records to flow between hospitals and doctors’ offices. The lack of interoperability has made it a challenge for consumers to access high-quality care and has led to unnecessary medical errors.”

Apple has long intended its HealthKit platform for developers to create more utility for the user’s health, as noted in its messaging to developers around ResearchKit:

Just How Bad Is Kids’ Smartphone Addiction?

It's the easiest babysitting hack known to modern adults attempting to pacify a fussy baby: Take a smartphone, find a game or show, put it in the child’s hands, and—lo and behold! The kid is quiet, eyes wide, and still.

And that magic trick seems to extend to children who can crawl, tots who are just stringing together words, kids toddling into preschool, and—most obviously, at least when it comes to psychological research—tweens and teens hunched over their smartphones, oblivious to the world.

That worries a group of Apple investors, who are calling on the company to investigate what effects this screen time has on children’s brains and development. In a letter co-signed by New York investment firm JANA Partners and Anne Sheehan, the director of corporate governance at the California State Teachers’ Retirement System (the largest public teacher’s pension fund in the country), the investors implore the tech giant to fund research into what their ubiquitous products might do to a child’s brain:

The average American teenager who uses a smartphone receives her first phone at age 10 and spends over 4.5 hours a day on it (excluding texting and talking). 78% of teens check their phones at least hourly and 50% report feeling ‘addicted’ to their phones. It would defy common sense to argue that this level of usage, by children whose brains are still developing, is not having at least some impact, or that the maker of such a powerful product has no role to play in helping parents to ensure it is being used optimally. It is also no secret that social media sites and applications for which the iPhone and iPad are a primary gateway are usually designed to be as addictive and time-consuming as possible, as many of their original creators have publicly acknowledged.

The letter is signed on behalf of investors whose shares amount to nearly $2 billion of Apple stock. Apple’s total valuation is about $900 billion.

It’s a small proportion, but the letter is sparking conversation about what it means to be addicted to technology—particularly among the youngest users of smart technology. It cites research and science published within childhood psychology, including that of Jean Twenge, a professor of psychology at San Diego State University whose most recent book, iGen: Why Today’s Superconnected Kids Are Growing Up Less Rebellious, More Tolerant, Less Happy—and Completely Unprepared for Adulthood, tackles the effects of smartphones on teens.

Twenge said she first spotted some odd trends in teenage mental health in 2011 and 2012 when smartphones were becoming more common among teens. “There was a doubling in the suicide rate and tripling in emergency room admissions of self-harm among young girls,” Twenge said. “And there was a 50 percent increase in the clinical depression rate.”

To Twenge, the link between screen time and mental health seemed apparent. And while she said her research doesn’t touch on addiction so much as the mental health of teens based on smartphone use, she said there’s undeniable proof that screen time has a negative effect on developing minds, based on research that was published in November in the journal Clinical Psychological Science.

“I found that teens who spend five or more hours a day of screen time are 71 percent more likely to have risk factors” for mental health issues, such as depression, or thinking about suicide. That screen time is measured as that devoted to gaming, social media, or any other use of a device outside homework. And while Twenge’s research doesn’t indicate causation, other research does show that screen time leads to unhappiness rather than the other way around.

That’s because there are some very significant neurological events happening when we interact with our screen. Anna Lembke is an assistant professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at the Stanford University Medical Center, and she’s studied addiction extensively, both substance abuse and technology. She said the way we absorb the cool blue glow of a screen is akin to the electricity a drug user may feel.

Kirkorian said her research focuses on learning with technology—not problematic use—and said that while she sees some expected demographic trends of boys playing video games more than girls, who tend to favor social media, and white children eking out more screen time than their black and Hispanic counterparts, tech is not necessarily all bad.

“Tech can play a positive role in the lives of kids,” Kirkorian said, citing the ability to video chat with family who live far away and playing interactive games under the supervision of older family members as valuable for bonding and learning.

What Kirkorian wishes the Apple investors’ letter addressed was the fact that while we’ve started to collect a fair amount of data on how kids interact with technology, we still don’t quite understand how to interpret those findings.

Kirkorian points to the example of teens who might be suffering from depression and anxiety. “The causal direction is not clear,” she pointed out. “It could be that this is actually a tool for teens who are disconnected and lack social interaction. They can be tools to help kids who are socially isolated.”

But are these kids reaching for tech to ease feelings of isolation, or are they isolated because they’re entering their digital worlds? “That’s really unclear, and it’s the chicken and egg problem here,” Kirkorian said.

Lembke said the screen, however, is inherently addictive, regardless of intent. “Even if I turn to a screen because I’m anxious, to cope with my anxiety, that screen can become inherently addictive,” she said. “You can become addicted," Lembke said she’s had patients come in with substance problems who didn’t initially mean to become reliant on a substance.

“For those who are vulnerable to addiction, the risks are extraordinarily high,” she said. “Add to that early onset of use, and the risk of addiction is there.”

Adam Alter, an associate professor of marketing at New York University and author of last year’s Irresistible: The Rise of Addictive Technology and the Business of Keeping Us Hooked, told The Daily Beast via email that the question isn’t about whether too much screen time leads to a tech addiction among kids.

“I’ve used the word ‘addiction’ myself, but whether or not you use the word to describe how children interact with screens is beside the point,” he said. “When you ask how young a person can be to be addicted, I think the real question is how young can a person be to be adversely affected by a smartphone.”

And for that, Alter doesn’t think there’s an age when screen time is safe. “There’s no lower limit in my opinion,” he said. “As soon as a child can sit in front of a screen—and as soon as that screen eats into the time he or she might spend in face-to-face interactions with other people or engaging with the wider world—it’s possible for the phone to compromise that child’s well-being.” To Alter, it’s up to the caretaker to figure out “when kids are distracted, unhappy, disengaged, and generally adversely affected by screens.”
