German Greens emphasise the need for carbon capture and storage
The German Greens have adopted an election programme for the European Parliament that stresses the need for carbon capture and storage.
The German Green Party, like most of their European counterparts, has long opposed carbon capture and storage (CCS) as a costly distraction from efforts to reduce global warming CO2 emissions.
The party’s reluctance to change its position has long prevented the adoption of a coherent carbon and CCS strategy, as required by successive Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) reports.
Now the party is reversing this position and campaigning for the 2024 EU elections on a platform open to this technology. In hard-to-recover sectors such as the cement industry, “we want to take advantage of technological opportunities and capture, store and, if necessary, use CO2 directly in the production process,” says the Greens’ new party programme.

IPCC Report: Power down to Power Up at the Scale and Speed that the Climate Crisis Demands

In the newly-released Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Sixth Assessment Report, over 200 scientists warned that given the countries’ inadequate scale and momentum of climate actions, global warming will likely exceed 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels during this century. Also, limiting the temperature rise to below two degrees Celsius will be a challenge. To ensure a “liveable and sustainable future for all,” global greenhouse gas emissions have to reduce by Nearly 50% within this decade through “rapid and far-reaching” shifts across all sectors and systems. This includes a transition to sustainable healthy diets featuring plant-based foods, such as legumes, coarse grains, vegetables, fruits, seeds, and nuts, which will also provide a range of significant co-benefits, such as enhanced public health and biodiversity conservation. The IPCC is a Shining World Leadership for Lives-Saving-Hero Award laureate. Our sincere gratitude, all IPCC scientists involved. In Celestial delight, may all governments urgently implement a universal vegan food system to secure the survival of all beings on Earth.

1.5 Degrees Celsius
2019 ended with a global average temperature of 1.1°C above estimated pre-industrial levels
under the 2015 Paris Agreement, every country in the world agreed to keep global temperatures well below 2 degrees celsius, otherwise we would risk natural tipping points that would surpass CO2 levels and global temperatures uncontrollably higher
“stabilising global warming at 1.5C will be extremely difficult if not impossible at this point” - michael mann professor of atmospheric science
the IPCC’s report lays out various pathways to stabilise global warming at 1.5degrees. these solutions all require unprecedented efforts to cut fossil-fuel use in half in less than 15 years and eliminate their use almost entirely in 30 years. this means no home, business or industry heated by gas or oil; no vehicles powered by diesel or gasoline; all coal and gas power plants to be shut
in addition to this, up to 3.86 million square miles (10 million square kilometres) of forests to be added by 2050. every pound of carbon dioxide emitted in the last hundred years will continue to trap heat in the atmosphere for hundreds of years to come. by 2045 or 2050 there will still be too much CO2 in the atmosphere. more forests will be essential to stabilise global temperatures at 1.5degrees
“forests provide a super-important service to humanity by currently removing about 25 percent of our CO2”
when the wood from mature forests is converted into furniture or buildings CO2 can be stored for the long term. the world’s forests contain more carbon than exploitable oil, gas, and coal deposits. “our planet’s future climate is inextricably tied to the future of its forests”
