Steamy: Perfume Induced
so a warning because this gets a little graphic.
Death Smells Like Blood and Champagne.
Her fourth audition in three days.
Irene didn’t mind it, this was the hustle she knew she would be forcing herself through. She actually really enjoyed auditions. But it was the fourth in three days that week, and the 12th that month. Rent was due next week.
It was a smaller production but the producer was big news. He had a knack for spotting up and coming theater directors, though there was rumor he would be trying his hand at silent films soon. Maybe even those Talkies that were starting to show up. Irene had been wanting to see one but normally only had enough set aside to treat herself to the Nickelodeon nine blocks from her apartment.
Irene sat with the other girls in the theater seats, waiting for her turn and getting side glances. She was alone, why didn’t she have a chaperone? It was scandalous yes, but only to anyone with money. Most of the girls here either came from money and were pretty with free time, or they were like her.
“Next group.”
Irene stepped onstage with five others, she read her lines and sang the assigned piece. But she put everything into it. Made it to the second round with 20 others and tried again. She made it to the third round with 12.
Irene enjoyed auditions, but this is where the fun stopped. She always got stuck at the end. “You got talent, but you’re just not what we’re looking for.”- What they always told her.
Fourth Round, she made it to the top 8.
Irene nearly fell out of her chair, she made it? She hadn’t made it to a final audition in months. She made it.
She just had to nail the part. So close.
It was well into the evening, most had already left except some of the stage crew and staff.
“Excuse me, Miss?”
Irene turned, a man walking up to her. His suit was crisp despite the sweltering heat threatening them in the cramped halls backstage. It was July and miserable, even in the evening the heat barely retreated leaving Irene irritable at best.
“Miss Oakland yes? Do you have a moment?”
It was the director of the production.
Irene pulled herself together with her sweetest smile, adjusting her skirts. “Ah yes, how can I help you?”
“Joey Carter Miss Oakland. I wanted to congratulate you, the piece you sang for the third round was superb, real vibrato you have there.”
“Thank you sir.”
He smiled and Irene could spot a gold tooth tucked away at the corner of his mouth. “Just call me Joey Miss Oakland.”
They spoke some more and the stage continued to clear. It was late and things started happening fast. She was ushered to his office for a drink. He stepped back out to speak with someone and she sipped on the glass of champagne he had given her. The bubbles popping against her lips every time she tilted the glass back.
Irene had just about finished her glass when Joey came back in, refilled her glass as he lit a cigar and put on a record. He took off his coat and threw it on a nearby rack. She knew what to do, flirt a little and bat her eyes. That’s what was happening here, Joey talked about how much he liked her audition but wasn’t sure what the producer’s thoughts were. Hinting that he could put a good word in.
He refilled her glass and finally poured one of his own.
He called her beautiful.
She took a long sip of her drink. The smell of champagne and cigar smoke made her dizzy. Her limbs felt heavy. He chatted about how much money the production was going to make. He had just bought a Pierce-Arrow. Fancy automobile it was.
He refilled her glass and the bottle was nearly empty.
She took a sip.
He showered her with compliments.
She drank those up too.
He was feeling her leg.
Irene jumped out of her seat, her head swam.
“Is something wrong Irene?”
When did she say he could use her first name?
“Come now sweetheart,” Joey cooed as he gently pulled her back into her seat. Hand back on her thigh.
“I.. I beg your p-pardon Mr. Carter but-“
He watched her with an amused smile as Irene stumbled through her words.
“Don’t be like that Irene, look you’re pretty as a picture and got the talent to match. But you know how these producer-type work. So picky, and they like blondes.”
He helped tip back the rest of her drink, bubbles popping down her throat. “But I do like you Irene you know, I could put a good word in. You would be perfect as a leading lady.”
He was kissing her neck, she froze up. Irene looked over her shoulder at a mirror that hung on the wall. Her head swam but her eyes were blown wide.
But he could give her the part.
And it wasn’t like this kind of thing didn’t happen all the time. It was part of the industry.
His hand wrapped around her waist.
It was fine.
But then he pulled just the right pin from her bun, hair tumbling down in thick auburn waves.
There was a broken champagne bottle in her hand, liquid dripping from the shards.
And she had him straddled on the floor, and she was stabbing the broken broken bottle into his face. Over, over, and over, and then it was just one shard because the bottle neck broke.
When Irene stopped, she couldn’t help but notice that death smelled an awful lot like champagne.
Or maybe it was because the drink was all over the front of her dress.
But then the iron hit like a strange twang of perfume. “Death smells like blood and champagne,” Irene mused.
It was all very automatic after that. He was dead on the throw rug, so she rolled him up in it. She put on his coat and felt the wallet in his pocket.
Well… rent was due soon.
A dead body rolled in a rug wasn’t as heavy as she thought. But maybe that was the adrenaline. The Pierce-Arrow was parked just outside the stage doors. She walked back to the hallway and saw the splatter of blood down the hall. But it was backstage and there was a shelf, one small accident and paint cans smashed to the floor, one just happened to roll into the office. Red paint all over the floor, such a mess.
She drove to the Hudson and climbed out as the car kept rolling into the river.
Irene sat on the riverbank and stared at her reflection in the water, smeared blood and makeup, hair a mess.
What a look.
She washed the blood off and slicked her hair into something presentable. There was a pack of cigarettes and matches in the coat pocket. Irene coughed and sputtered with each puff, but it felt like the thing to do as she watched the sun rise.
The adrenaline wore off, she was exhausted. Yet…. She felt better.
Huh.
Shame no one was there to watch, that had to have been one hell of a show.

Fireside Chat with Irene Edwards, Sunset Magazine Editor in Chief
Friday May 11, 2017 Medill alum Irene Edwards has known she wanted to be a magazine editor in chief ever since she toured Vanity Fair at age 13.
She shared insights on leading a 120-year-old magazine brand into a new era, earning a free MBA when she engineered the magazine’s sale to a private equity firm and why they’ve found an entirely new audience on social media.
She fielded questions from Northwestern SF students on the strongest content themes, adapting to innovations in digital design and how to make writing little content blurbs less tedious. Photos by Martin Backhauss of Sol Gate Studios 2018

5. … Summer Camp (Irene Neuwirth) (x)
Tumblr media
7.  ...and Film School (Chester Tam) (x)
8. Before he met Joanna, he dated other famous ladies but - out of respect - he never discussed it/them (x)
9. He loves turtles and tortoises. When he was a kid, he had a pet turtle that he named 'Squirt' because the first time he held it, it peed on him. His Mom, Margie, accidentally killed Squirt when Andy was at Summer camp... (x)
10. … Maybe this is why, when shooting 'Popstar', Andy fell hard for Maximus (Conner 4 Real's turtle). He says they "had a good thing going" and that he wanted to adopt him. In the end, he decided against it because there are a bunch of coyotes in his neighborhood and he was worried the little guy wouldn't be safe. (Popstar: DVD Commentary)
11. Speaking of his Mom, despite being a super private person, he appeared on 'Finding your Roots' so that he could help her track down her birth family (x)
12. When he succeeded he cried (although we never got to see it on camera) (x)
13. That's because, like all good boys, he loves his Mama which is why - as part of the same episode - he said "My mom is basically the kindest person I know… and many people would corroborate that" (x)
14. Andy's Sisters, Hannie (Johanna) and Darrow, used to make him wear diapers and put his hair in pigtails until he was 5 years old. He says he didn't mind because he just liked that they were paying attention to him (x)
15. That's why he sees his identity in comedy as being 'America's kid brother'. When he was young, he would annoy his sisters until they laughed and he claims to have been replicating that approach to entertainment ever since
16. Although a bunch of his characters have 'Daddy Issues', Andy definitely doesn't. He's super close with his Papa (Joe) and has said "he's a good man" and "the best Dad in the world" (x)
17. Joe was Andy's youth soccer coach and in one scene in 'Hot Rod', Joe's favorite photograph can be seen in the background. It shows a very young Andy posing with a soccer ball, after "scoring the winning goal against Mersey" (x)
Tumblr media
18. He's been a loyal Golden State Warriors fan since he was a little kid, living in Oakland (then Berkeley) and, in 2010, he correctly predicted that they would "win a Championship in my lifetime" (x)
19. The proceeds from his Umami Burger ('The Samburger') went to a deafness early detection program in Berkeley. This cause is close to his heart because Margie uses hearing aids and used to work in the special needs program, teaching deaf kids (x)
20. He, Kiv, and Jorm have made multiple donations to their old school district, including $250 000 to its theater program (x)
21. On the subject of The Lonely Island; Andy always goes out of his way to make sure that everyone knows how much he owes to his buddies. For instance, he told Marc Maron, during his WTF appearance, that "I get a lot of credit for what Kiv and Jorm have done" (x)
22. He makes this face when he knows he’s said something naughty…
Tumblr media
(Gif credit: @andrewsambags)
23. During his 'Wild Horses' appearance, he said that he can't watch scary movies because they freak him out too much. He told 'Complex' that he's still scared of 'The Shining' (x)...
24. … Similarly, when he was at UC Santa Cruz he worked at the Del Mar movie theater and he had a hard time coping with screenings of 'Species 2' (x)
25. He fell in love with Joanna, the moment he met her, when she greeted him by addressing him as 'Steve the C**t' (x)
 26. He listened to 'Ys', everyday for a year, before he and Joanna started dating (x)
27. He bought the original portrait that was used as the basis of the cover art for 'Ys' and gave it to Joanna as a Christmas present, so that she could hang it in her music room (x)
 28. He loves birds and goes hiking and birding with Joanna (x)
 29. Every new comment he makes about Joanna becomes an instant contender for 'most beautiful thing a person has ever said about their spouse' (x)
30. For example, he readily admits that Jake's iconic heart eyes are the result of him thinking about his amazing wife (x)
31. There are many stories about how incredibly romantic Andy and Joanna's wedding was and Jorm has said that it featured "the most magical vows I've ever heard" (x)
32. The Newsombergs now live in Charlie Chaplin's old house (x)
33. On the Emmys Red Carpet (2015), the year he hosted, they took a momentary break from posing for the world's press to whisper 'I love you' to each other (x)
34. At last year's Vanity Fair party, Andy carried Joanna's purse for her so she could grab a snack (x)
Tumblr media
35. He was a semi-permanent fixture in the audience for her recent run of shows for the 'Strings/Keys Incident' tour, even officially confirming his status as the 'President of her Fan Club' (x)
36. He used his Golden Globes monologue to call out the government for framing and murdering the Black Panthers (x)
37. On the Carpet for the Guy's Choice Awards, he called the event "a ridiculous farce", adding that "men already have it so easy - it's insane that there's a show that celebrates them". That makes sense when you consider that he, Kiv and Jorm have made an entire career out of parodying toxic masculinity (x)
38. He once said that only "idiot-ass men" think that women aren't funny (x)
39. He’s been wearing glasses since 7th Grade and he has the most heartbreakingly cute habit of nudging them up his nose, (especially when he wears his Sol Moscot frames) (x)...
40. ... and of rubbing his eyes under them (x)
Tumblr media
41. He barely ever wears glasses for roles but he also avoids contacts (because he doesn't like touching his eyeballs) which means he's almost always 'acting blind' (x)
42. He has worn his glasses in character a few times - as 'himself' ('Lady Dynamite'), as 'Paul' ('I Think You Should Leave') and during a very small number of SNL sketches (e.g. during his one appearance in a 'Gilly' with Kristen Wiig) (x)
43. He can't tolerate glare and when that makes him squint it's a sight that's too cute for words (x)
44. He owns about six outfits and has been rotating them for well over a decade (x)
45. He barely ever breaks during shooting/while performing, so when he does it's aggressively adorable. (x), (x)
46. He's a grown ass man who persuades people to come with him to the bathroom because if he goes by himself he'll get lonely (x)
47. He didn't announce he was leaving SNL, until after his last appearance, selflessly choosing not to detract from Kirsten Wiig's huge and emotional send-off (x)
48. He undertook a quest to smell like Lorne Michaels (x)
49. He's ageing like a fine wine (x)
50. To protect their daughter's privacy, Andy and Joanna never announced that they were expecting. They've never released their little girl's name or date of birth and most news outlets still report that they became parents in August 2017 (even though that's inaccurate) (x)
51. Although he's careful not to talk about his daughter often, sometimes he can't keep from gushing about her. For example, when asked about his first year of fatherhood he said: "It’s been the best thing that’s ever happened to me. Just like a beautiful, incredible dream. It has surpassed every expectation I ever had. It’s definitely been very blissful" (x)
52. After their daughter was born, Andy and Joanna spent the first 40 days at home with her (in a practice known as 'confinement'). He's described it as being "a really special time". (x)
53. Andy is famously mild-mannered but, when asked about what triggers his 'Dad claws', he admitted that if anyone attempted to touch his daughter, without permission, he'd "probably sock them hard in the face"…
54. ...Characteristically, he went on to add that he hopes that never happens, since he hasn't been in a fight since 6th Grade (x)
55. Cyndi Lauper was his first celebrity crush and he plays her record ('She's so unusual') for his daughter all the time. (x)
56. His is the very definition of a precious laugh (x)...
57. It's made even more wonderful by the way it makes his voice go high-pitched (x)
58.  … and the way it causes his eyebrow to rise involuntarily
Tumblr media
59. It's impossible not to smile at his impression of his Mom (x)
60. And laugh at his impression of John Mulaney (x)
61. He was so convinced he wouldn't win the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical, that he didn't prepare a speech. Instead, as he explained to David Letterman, he "just went… and started drinking". The resulting list of improvised 'thank yous' was perfect in every way (x)
62. As producers, Andy, Kiv and Jorm have given life to some amazing projects ('Alone Together', 'Brigsby Bear', 'I Think You Should Leave')...
63. … and gone out of their way to support women in comedy ('Party Over Here', 'PEN15') (x)
64. As well as being a comedy legend, he's a super-talented dramatic actor, who gave the performance of a lifetime in 'Celeste and Jesse Forever' but, after the movie wrapped, and it was time to do press for it, he was straight back to goofing around (x)
65. His lip bite should be illegal (x)
66. Even though he wears the same vanishingly small number of outfits, over and over, he has a vast collection of the most excellent socks (x)
67. He always gives 'editing notes' during his own interviews (x)
68. He has a super sweet and sincere way of thanking interviewers when they compliment him (x)
69. He adjusts his hoodie constantly (x)
70. The two most perfect Jake laughs in b99 are actually real Andy laughs 'https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=W38A_xuXaeg https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=sVm9nYrTWRQ

71. Virtually everyone who has ever worked with Andy has talked about what a wonderful person he is. This explains why so many of them have been involved with more than one of his projects (x)
72. It's not only his colleagues who talk about what a delight he is (x), (x)
73. This lovestruck fool wore his own wife's merch when he went out to dinner (x)
74. No one else uses the word 'dinky' quite like Andy (x). The same goes for 'snacky' (see point 70)
75. He does this with his tongue (x)
76. He still likes to play soccer but his eyesight is so bad that he has to keep his glasses on for it
Tumblr media
77. When he lets his gorgeous floofy hair grow a little it sits perfectly over the arms of his glasses (x)
78. He gifted the world with Jakey's little curl (x)
79. At the James Franco Roast, he couldn't bring himself to be mean to anyone except himself (and Jeff Ross, a little!) (x)
80. In fact, he's always been willing to laugh at himself (x) and he still is (x)
81. He changes b99 scripts to make them more feminist (x)
82. Despite their humble insistence that they just benefited from 'good timing', the reality is that Andy, Kiv and Jorm (along with Chris Parnell) revolutionized digital media, when 'Lazy Sunday' popularized YouTube, increasing its traffic by 85% overnight (x)
83. He once attended the Vanity Fair party because his Mom told him to (x)
84. He has an amazing way of subtly but firmly shutting down inappropriate questions, like when this interviewer suggested that Holt being gay was something that could have been played for laughs https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=idQsYQfkR5o
85. He auditioned for SNL at the same time as Bill Hader. Hader thought he'd blown it because Andy had a bunch of props and Bill had none. In the meantime, Andy thought he'd blown it when he saw Hader and realized 'this guy doesn't need any props' (x)
86. His bromance with Seth Meyers is one for the ages (x)
87. Every single second of this video is proof of why Andy, Kiv and Jorm deserve the world (x)
88. He once dragged Mulaney up on stage for SNL Goodnights, even though writers weren't allowed to join in (x)
89. He has a hilarious phobia of pooping anywhere except his own bathroom (x)
90. His beautiful, beautiful, face: His smile (radiant), his eyes (caramel - hella disarming), his ears (adorably asymmetrical), his nose (perfect), His chin (the dimple… *swoon*), his jaw (could cut glass), The 'Sambeard' (another amazing layer of pretty) (x)
91. His body: His butt (x), his thighs, (x) his soft lil tummy (The ‘Sambelly’) (x), his hands. (x), his arms (x), his hips…
Tumblr media
(Gif credit: @amystiago /@badpostandy on Twitter)
92. All signs point to the fact that, like Jake, Andy uses his glasses case as a wallet (x)
93. Jake's "cool-cool-cool-cool-cool-cool" is an irl Andy-ism that the writers worked into b99 scripts. What's even better is that Joanna does it, too (x)
94. He has a really good arm and is low key competitive, which is super hot https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=e32K_nBDy3Q

youtube
95. He's one half of the cutest Red Carpet pose of all time (x)
96. He barely ever seems to get mad but if angry Jake is anything to go by, maybe he should... (x)
97. He's a huge nerd, who geeks out over GOT, LOTR, 'Star Wars', 'Alien(s)' and anything relating to time travel (x), (x)
98. He has a gorgeous speaking voice, especially when he’s tired or a little sick. (Bonus points for any time he uses the word ‘correct’. See point 30) (x)
99. He’s still so committed to his b99 fans and fam, even after all this time and is as excited as the rest of us that...

In celebration of Ida and Assata’s birthdays, and because I felt energetic, able, and outraged, I went out to the Rally to Free Grace from Juvenile Detention.
Grace is a 15-year-old Black child who the state incarcerated during the Covid-19 pandemic because her school failed to make accommodations for her as required by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Without proper accommodations, it is difficult for Grace, who has ADHD, to keep up with schoolwork. And even if Grace did not have ADHD, sending a child to prison for not doing schoolwork is violent, cruel, and a violation of multiple civil and human rights.
Grace needs care not criminalization or cages and Judge Mary Ellen Brennan needs to resign immediately. She is a violent racist with no conscience and should not be occupying any position of power. Please read more about Grace’s story here.
Another reason I went out to the rally for Grace is that, although I will continue to fight for justice for Black women who are victims of state and vigilante violence and I will continue to #SayHerName, I want to fight for us while we are still here and do everything within my power to prevent our murder.
We know from Sandra Bland, Layleen Polanco, Irene Bamenga, and Priscilla Slater’s stories that the state sentences Black women and girls to death when the state sends us to jails, prisons, ice detention facilities, and juvenile detention facilities. Especially when we have disabilities. So I’m rallying for Grace because she is at a high risk of being killed by the state and I want to be in solidarity with my community as we attempt to prevent another unnecessary, racist misogynoirist murder.
So please join me and many community members as we fight for Grace (and Black women and girls) while we are alive. Fight for our lives, our healing, our justice, our right to exist without being harmed, our wellness.
Sign petitions (1, 2) demanding the Oakland County Court release Grace.
Call Judge Brennan and demand that she release Grace (1, 2).
Email the Birmingham Public Schools Board of Education (1).
File a complaint against Judge Mary Ellen Brennan (1, 2).
Contact MI Liberation to learn how to support Grace and her family after the state releases her.

Maynard Jackson
Tumblr media
Maynard Holbrook Jackson Jr. (March 23, 1938 – June 23, 2003) was an American politician and attorney from Georgia. A member of the Democratic Party, he was elected in 1973 at the age of 35 as the first black mayor of Atlanta, Georgia and of any major city in the South. He served three terms (1974–1982, 1990–1994), making him the second longest-serving mayor of Atlanta, after six-term mayor (1937–1941, 1942–1962) William B. Hartsfield.
He is notable also for public works projects, primarily the new Maynard H. Jackson International terminal at the Atlanta airport, and for greatly increasing minority business participation in the city. After his death, the William B. Hartsfield Atlanta International Airport was re-named Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport to honor his service to the expansion of the airport, the city and its people.
Family history, background and personal life
Jackson was born into a family that valued education and political activism. His maternal grandfather was civil rights leader John Wesley Dobbs, who worked to successfully overturn the white primary in Georgia. He also gained the hiring of black police officers in Atlanta and lighting of Auburn Street, the main retail street of the black community. Maynard's mother Irene (Dobbs) Jackson was one of his six daughters; all graduated from Spelman College, encouraged by their parents. Irene earned a doctorate in France and became a Professor of French at the college.
His father Maynard Holbrook Jackson was a Baptist minister from New Orleans. He became active in civil rights in Dallas, Texas, where he had grown up after his family moved. His grandfather Alexander Stephens Jackson had been a Baptist minister and educator in Louisiana and Texas. The young Jackson's father died when he was fifteen; his grandfather Dobbs became even more influential in his life.
Jackson attended David T. Howard High School in Atlanta and Morehouse College, a historically black college for men in Atlanta, graduating in 1956 at the age of eighteen. He sang in the Morehouse College Glee Club. After attending the Boston University Law School for a short time, Jackson held several jobs, including selling encyclopedias. He returned to graduate studies, attending the North Carolina Central University Law School. He graduated with a law degree in 1964. He is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity.
Jackson married Burnella "Bunnie" Hayes, in 1965. The couple had three children: Elizabeth, Brooke, and Maynard III. Bunnie Jackson founded First Class, Inc., a public relations and marketing firm in Atlanta, prior to their divorce.
Jackson married Valerie Richardson in 1977, to whom he was married for 25 years until his death. They have two daughters, Valerie and Alexandra. Valerie Jackson hosts Between the Lines each weekend on the WABE-FM radio station, the Atlanta Public Broadcasting station.
Early career
Jackson worked as a lawyer for the National Labor Relations Board and a legal services firm. He joined the Democratic Party.
Political career
In 1968, Jackson at 30, decided to run for the US Senate against incumbent Herman Talmadge. His campaign was underfunded, and he lost, but Jackson won in Atlanta, gaining prominence in the city, which had a substantial black minority. The following year, he built on his strength, gaining election as vice mayor, who was presiding officer of the board of aldermen. At that time, Atlanta modified its city charter, strengthening the position of mayor and renaming the vice mayor as president of the city council (aldermen were now city council members).
In 1970, Jackson became Atlanta's first Black Vice-Mayor, his first elected position which he held for four years.
In 1973, Jackson was elected with 60 percent of the vote, as the first African-American mayor of Atlanta and any major southern city; he was supported by a coalition of white liberals/moderates and African Americans. At the age of 35, he had unseated incumbent Sam Massell.
During his first term, Jackson worked to improve race relations in and around Atlanta after the polarization caused by the election campaign. As mayor, he led the beginnings and much of the progress on several huge public-works projects for the city and region. Affirmative action programs helped minority and women-owned businesses to participate. He helped arrange for the upgrade of the then-William B. Hartsfield Atlanta International Airport's huge terminal (now Domestic Terminal) to modern standards. Jackson strongly opposed the construction of freeways through in-town neighborhoods, knowing that such actions destroyed thriving communities.
Jackson was mayor through the period when the separate Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) obtained a large amount of Federal funding for a rapid-transit rail-line system, when construction began, and when MARTA began its first rail transit service in Atlanta and in DeKalb County in 1979 and during its continual expansion thereafter. As mayor, he celebrated in September 1990 when Atlanta was selected as the host city for the 1996 Summer Olympic Games. As mayor, he accepted the Olympic flag at the 1992 closing ceremonies in Barcelona, Spain. He oversaw the completion of many planned public works projects, such as improvements to freeways and parks, and the completion of Freedom Parkway, which were expedited from 1990 to 1996 in preparation for the Olympic Games that began in August 1996.
During Jackson's second term as mayor, the Atlanta Child Murders were ongoing between 1979 and 1981. He supported the Atlanta Police and other police forces in the area but also worked to calm public tensions aroused by the serial killings of black children. The accused killer, Wayne Williams, was caught in 1981. Williams was convicted to serve two consecutive life sentences for the murder of two adult males, but never charged with or tried for the murder of any of the child victims. He is currently being held in Telfair State Prison.
In 1974, Jackson received the Samuel S. Beard Award for Greatest Public Service by an Individual 35 Years or Under, an award given out annually by Jefferson Awards.
Controversy
Maynard Jackson provoked a major racial crisis in May 1974 when he attempted to fire the incumbent white police chief, John Inman. Jackson believed the change was needed to grapple with Atlanta's growing crime problem and charges by the black community of police racial insensitivity toward African Americans. Whites opposed the firing and racial tensions rose, detracting from Atlanta's proud motto: "too busy to hate."
In August 1974 Mayor Jackson appointed A. Reginald Eaves, a college friend and fellow activist, as Public Safety Commissioner. Eaves was criticized for lacking police experience. He generated controversy by appointing an ex-convict as his personal secretary but was criticized more for what was considered as a system of quota promotions and hiring in the police department, which many decried as "reverse discrimination."
Jackson fired Eaves after revelation of a police exam cheating scandal. Eaves was later convicted by a federal jury of extortion in 1988 after selling his vote on two rezonings.
Atlanta's crime
In addition to the 1979–1981 Atlanta Child Murders mentioned above, residents were concerned about a rising crime rate during Mayor Jackson's tenure, which was consistent with national trends. In 1979, with a soaring murder rate and nationwide publicity about crime there, Georgia Governor George Busbee, acting on a request from Mayor Maynard Jackson, called in Georgia State Patrol troopers to help patrol the downtown. The business community accused Mayor Jackson and Police Chief George Napper of dismissing public concerns about crime. Atlanta had the highest murder rate and the highest overall crime rate of any city, and the numbers were rapidly climbing higher, with a 69% increase in homicides between 1978 and 1979 alone. Much of it was considered driven by drug wars.
Service to the Democratic National Committee
After leaving office as mayor, Jackson continued to be active with the Democratic Party. In 2001 he unsuccessfully sought the post as the Democratic National Committee chairman, losing to the fund-raiser Terry McAuliffe, who had the backing of former president Bill Clinton and Hillary Clinton. Jackson was backed by presidential candidate Bill Bradley, among others.
Jackson was appointed as the National Development Chairman of the Democratic National Committee and was the first Chairman of the DNC Voting Rights Institute. In 2002, he founded the American Voters League, a non-profit and non-partisan effort to increase national voter participation. He appeared briefly in the 2001 documentary Startup.com.
Legacy and honors
In 2008 the Southside Comprehensive High School was renamed the Maynard Holbrook Jackson High School.
In 2003, Hartsfield Atlanta International Airport had Jackson's name added to it, and in 2012 the airport's new international terminal was named for him.
In 2015 a documentary film about his life and work, entitled Maynard, was in preparation, directed by Samuel D. Pollard. It is expected to be released in 2016.
The Maynard Documentary was officially selected by DOC NYC to premiere at their film festival on November 16, 2017.
Death
Jackson died in 2003 at the age of 65, of a cardiac arrest at a hospital in Arlington, Virginia after suffering a heart attack at the Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. His remains are buried at the Oakland Cemetery in Atlanta.

Nori Reed has only been doing stand-up comedy for two years, but onstage at the White Horse in Oakland, she worked the room like a pro. Her ruthless, oft-kilter jokes about Marin moms, being half white (she’s not Japanese, she emphasized) and transgender were landing with the crowd, all of whom were celebrating Oakland Pride.
“I wish I had more trans jokes, but Dave Chappelle did them all,” Reed deadpanned.
This monthly event known as Man Haters, dedicated to putting the spotlight on women and LGBTQ comics, has packed the 86-year-old gay bar since 2015 when co-founders Irene Tu and Ash Fisher began the showcase. In February, Reed and co-producer Dominique Gelin inherited Man Haters, but all that changes now that Reed is leaving the Bay Area, following the route of many local comics as they pursue their careers in Los Angeles. That makes the Man Haters show on Thursday, Oct. 24, Reed’s last as host and a graduation party of sorts.
“I’m grieving. I’m feeling all the feelings,” Reed said. “I’m a Cancer, so moving for me is like worse than death.”
Reed landed in Oakland five years ago for school but found the Bay Area a fitting place to truly be herself. It’s where Reed transitioned into a woman and where she discovered her talent for comedy. What started as an interest in a workshop for queer trans people of color led to Reed opening for Amy Poehler at Clusterfest and performing at Outside Lands, two of San Francisco’s biggest summer festivals.
Now more opportunities are opening up for her. During a recent trip to Los Angeles for a week of shows and meetings, Reed signed with Rise Management (which also represents Anthony Jeselnik) and was convinced to move down.
Before living in Oakland, being a comic didn’t seem possible for Reed. She grew up in a tiny farm town in Christian County, Ky., where she “literally rode horses and picked blackberries that were made into jam.” Her family was active in the local Pentecostal church and thought it was “very wrong to be gay.” But Reed says she knew she was queer from an early age and spent her childhood hiding her real self.
“You have to observe and fit in to survive. You have to distract them from how different you are, so you fill in that gap with comedy,” Reed said. “Humor is how I survived.”

Philadelphia, PA -- There is always something so effortlessly beautiful to (Sandy) Alex G’s music. This week, he released two more tracks, “Southern Sky” & “Near” from his upcoming album House of Sugar. "Southern Sky” is the kind of track that you fall in love with as you move through the song. The track grabs listeners attention in the beginning with a bit of cacophonous piano and moves effortlessly into its lush, dreamy nature. With Emily Yacina also on vocals, “Southern Sky” oozes the warmth that comes with nostalgia. The music video, animated by Elliot Bech, perfectly captures the lovable oddity of (Sandy) Alex G.
House of Sugar is out September 13 via Domino Recording Co.

Claudio Simonetti’s Goblin Announce Live SUSPIRIA Score Tour and Screenings
There’s certainly been a lot of big movie remakes and reboots this last year to be sure.  One of the most talked about in the horror world has without a doubt been Suspiria.  On top of the beautiful 4K restoration of Dario Argento’s 1977 version, Luca Guadagnino will be taking a stab at a remake later this fall.  While Guadagnino’s version will be scored by Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke, the original is famous for its eerie, beautiful, prog-rock drenched sounds courtesy of Italian outfit Goblin.

May Is Mental Health Month- On Youth Suicide | opinions , columnists
The National Alliance on Mental Illness’s `Ending the Silence’ program teaches high school students and staff about early warning signs of mental health conditions.
Show me a psychotic child and I will write you a tragedy.
“Your boy is sick,” the fire chief said. “And very dangerous.” No one had ever laughed when shown photos of burned bodies.
Teachers, however, praised the unkempt loner who rode a skateboard, wore tie-dyed jeans, and excelled in mathematics, philosophy, and foreign languages.
During recess, he danced alone and feasted on cotton candy pulled from the sky. In class, he argued that the first sign of knowledge was a desire to die. On the way home, he uprooted flowers, kicked in fences, and slashed tires.

When questioned by police, the soft-spoken kid who reeked of urine and refused to bathe, pointed to Plato’s cave.
Outside, shadows mocked the stoic science fair finalist who set fires, made bombs, and kept in his locker a rotting goat’s head.
Looking out from a fishbowl, all appeared as they were not, and he wanted off an illusory world that spun truth into vapor.
And nothing, not even time, could heal his broken soul.
Theo Karantsalis, a Miami writer and mental health advocate, reflects on his first suicide attempt at age 12. He has been diagnosed with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Those in crisis should contact the Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255, or visit suicidepreventionlifeline.org. Visit also, namimiami.org/ending-the-silence.

READERS POLL 1953!
January 20, 1953
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A good natured, talented redhead from Butte, Mont.(**), has achieved greatness in the motion picture world, and greater stature in the world of television, walked off high awards in the Third Annual San Mateo Times TV Poll. By this time there should be little doubt as to referring. She is Lucille Ball, "Lucy" of "I Love Lucy," won a resounding victory in the Favorite Female (network) division, and walked off with the top honors you viewers chose her as "Star of the Year." On the tally sheets Lucille had so many votes that it was not even necessary to count the total number to see that she had won.
NETWORK MOST OUTSTANDING SHOW
(1) YOUR SHOW OF SHOWS (NBC-TV) (2) I Love Lucy (CBS-TV) (3) Victory at Sea (NBC-TV) (4) Jackie Gleason Show (CBS-TV)  (5) Your Hit Parade (XBC-TV)
Rest in the order of finish: What's My Line, This Is Your Life, Dragnet, Arthur Godfrey and his Friends, Toast of the Town. All-Star Revue, Omnibus, Super Circus, Harry Owens, Robert Montgomery Presents, Studio One, Kukla Fran and Ollie, Mr. Peepers, Burns and Allen, I Married Joan, Lone Ranger, Milton Berle Show, Ozzie and Harriet and Our Miss Brooks.
FAVORITE FEMALE PERSONALITY
(1) LUCILLE BALL  (2) Imogene Coca (3) Kate Smith (4) Joan Davis (5) Eve Arden
Rest in the order of finish: Gracie Allen, Dorothy Collins, Arlene Francis, Tallulah Bankhead, Jane Froman, Marie Wilson, Peggy Lee, Betty Furness, Martha Raye, Irene Dunne, Rosalind Russell, Bess Myerson, Dorothy Killgallen, Faye Emerson, Laraine Day, Joan Alexander, Peggy Wood, Marian Marlowe, June Vallie, Fran Allison, Gale Storm, Julie Bishop and Margaret Piazza.
FAVORITE MALE PERSONALITY
(1) JACKIE GLEASON  (2) Bishop Fulton J. Sheen (3) Sid Caesar  (4) Arthur Godfrey,  (5) Jack Webb
Rest in the order of finish: Groucho Marx, Wally Cox, Desi Arnaz, Herb Shriner, Ralph Edwards, Jimmy Durante, Jerry Lewis, Donald O'Connor, Art Linkletter, Gary Moore, Julius La Rosa, Bob Hope, John Daly, Victor Borge, Robert Cummings, Tommy Bartlett, Edward R. Murrow and Eddie Cantor.
STAR OF THE YEAR
(1) LUCILLE BALL (2) Jackie Gleason (3) Bishop Fulton J. Sheen (4) Sid Caesar (5) Rusty Draper  (6) Arthur Godfrey (7) Groucho Marx (8) Wally Cox, Lou Hurley, and Larry Storch
There they are: you picked and did a pretty good job at that.
In addition to the above lists names there were a number of votes cast for President Eisenhower, Adlai Stevenson, Mr. Roman! (GOP convention), the Puerto Rican delegate, and the mayor Oakland, Cliff Rashell.
Tomorrow and during the week we'll go into an analysis of the poll and some of your kindly presented comments on shows.
(**) = Interestingly, Lucille Ball is still said to hale from Butte, Montana, instead of Jamestown, New York. Lucy began fibbing about her birthplace early in her career and it took many years to correct the record.
Tumblr media
This announcement was made on Tuesday, January 20, 1953, just one day after Lucille Ball and Lucy Ricardo gave birth to sons, making television history and setting viewing records. Perhaps the timing was coincidental, but unlikely.
Tumblr media
Such reader polls were not uncommon. In fact, during January 1953, the San Francisco Examiner, just 30 miles from San Mateo, also ran a TV / Radio readers poll.
Tumblr media
The results, announced January 29, 1953, were unsurprising. “I Love Lucy” was best-loved - even above “Your Show of Shows” which had placed tops in San Mateo, but here only came in third, behind Groucho Marx.
