Reading the Shahnameh out of curiosity and for AU inspiration purposes and...
(some of these are definitely gonna be out of order since my stuff got jumbled up while transferring phones my bad)
Tumblr media
Souroush?!
Ormuzd is Ahura Mazda, by the way. The creator deity and... sole? main? deity of Zoroastrianism, if I remember correctly. Arslan Senki seems to have made the Parsian faith polytheistic, with a whole pantheon, but Zoroastrianism was a monotheistic religion, wasn't it? But then again there seemed to be deities/semi-deities like Anita? I really need to read more about the entire thing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kaweh has balls of steel! And later in the tale it is mentioned that Kaweh's apron/banner has become part of Feridoun's signatures, or at least that of his army, and Kaweh's son later comes to serve under Feridoun's son and grandson as well. That's really really cool. A much better fate than what Iumaka received, in any case. Iumaka too was a blacksmith— they even crafted the chains that'd bind Zahhak, and the treasured sword Rukhnabad as well. They and Kaykhusraw (the approximate Feridoun equivalent even if Kaykhusraw's actual namesake comes up way later, and I haven't gotten that far) even had a child together, but both Iumaka and Araya the younger met untimely ends, at Kaykhusraw's own hands/command.
Tumblr media
(This takes place before the entire Feridoun thing, by the way. Feridoun is his grandson, according to this translation)
Note to self: do look up where Cathay is. When I was reading ArSen I always wondered whether Jamshid got tossed into the Darband Inland Sea or the actual Sea sea in the south, lol.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Just pinging any mention of Alborz that catches my eye. Very relevant to my interests that both instances here involve a child being fostered by someone who lives there: the hermit and Simurgh. How the mountains are regarded as a safe haven for these two children (Feridoun and the boy who would later be named Zal). (Also Zal was born with silvery white hair and that's why he was abandoned by his father Saum.)
Tumblr media
Feridoun had three sons, Kaykhusraw has two in canon and three in my AU. What a coincidence! Though I guess the difference is that the eldest dies instead of the youngest, a boy who didn't live long enough to even meet his half-brothers.
I feel so bad for Irij! His brothers were out for blood and he just wanted peace :( At least his kid lived and avenged him. Minuchihr, whom I'm guessing was Manuchurh's namesake?
Tumblr media
HUH. So there were Zahhak's descendants still exist, and they were even allowed to rule! I wasn't expecting that (nor for Zahhak to even have descendants— I guess ArSen's Zahhak influenced my impression of the character a lot)

[The Frisland flag. Symbol of our land in cloth. What is its history? What does it mean?
The name that we call it is 'the Blueband'. It shows a field of gold and over it a blue line from top-left to bottom-right. This blue line is a 'blue-band', a symbol of Frislandic leaders. It began as a shepherd's cloak, similar to those still worn today (it is not known why blue is the colour of choice).
If a shepherd is a leader to his flock, so an elected leader is like a shepherd for the people. Because of this, burghers began wearing a band of blue cloth as part of their office. The picture depicts Mark Jameson One-eyed, a mercenary leader from Godmec.
Over the years, the band became smaller, till now it is a strip of cloth. Here is a picture showing the first female president of Frisland, Mary Matthewson Wise.
On the flag, then, the blueband signifies our elections and our freedom from tyranny, and safeguards the riches of our country (the golden field).]

‘Irij Garden’ by Andrei Shishkin.
Irij is a mythical place in Slavic mythology where birds fly for the winter and souls go after death, sometimes identified with paradise.

the differences between old slavic and greek + nordic traditional views of death are so interesting to me tho. in greek / norse, life was where it’s at and in death there is basically nothingness  (barring if you died a warrior / hero, tho even then, in valhalla you were doing basically the same things you did in life - fight and feast). you spend the rest of eternity just chilling in the underworld up until something like ragnarok comes along.  but the slavs had it opposite. life sucked. either their land was trying to kill them or neighbors were trying to kill them, often both. it was harsh, miserable, something you didn’t want defining your existence. so what was the take on death? when you die you go to a land of eternal spring where all you do is herd cattle. it’s like that moominpappa quote, all they want to do is dream and herd cattle. but life was mean so they figured they’d do that in death instead. it just... really says a lot about the view towards life and death even amongst relatively close cultures.

Veles and the Otherworld
However, the figure of Charon (treated, of course, only figuratively, as a certain mythical motif of Indo-European origin), as a carrier of souls, deserves further attention. As mentioned above, the Slavic equivalent of Charon is Weles/Wołos. According to linguistic analyses, in Slavic beliefs, he was a god to whom all human souls went after death. His domain was located in a field (or meadow) far in the West, behind the water that separated the world of the living from the world of the dead (Nawia)
We know very little about the Slavic land of the dead. I have already mentioned that the words nav/nawie, known from textual accounts, referred to dead people or their ghosts and occasionally (in later times) malevolent spirits. The late medieval textual accounts from the Czech area confirm that Navia was the name of the land of the dead among the Western Slavs. ‘To go to Navia’ meant to die and ‘to prepare someone for Nav’, meant to kill
According to Andrzej Szyjewski, the Slavs ‘originally did not distinguish Heaven from Hell, there was only one “otherworld” which surrounded “our world”, known as Wyraj, Raj, Irij. It was located somewhere behind the waters (especially the Milky Way) in the form of an abyss which pulled one inside by means of a vortex’. One theory that seeks to explain the etymology of the word Wyraj/Raj derives it from the Slavic linguistic roots and associates it with the pre-Slavic *rajь (to swim) and *gajь explaining it as a ‘ritualised part of earthly space, separated by water, a place where the souls reside’.
[...]
In the studies on Slavic eschatology, the Otherworld is sometimes located within a mythical pasture, which is also attributed an Indo-European genesis (Łuczyński 2012: 173). ‘Due to the undefined nature of its condition and the inability to distinguish the green colour, the pasture becomes a place of pulsating, invisible life, but at the same time represents a pre-cosmic void and land of the dead, in which the category of time is absent. The pasture, therefore, is a representation of a land that is no longer earthly, completely divine nor infernal. It is an Otherworld, a place between and at the border, through which it is possible to communicate with the sacred’
Imagining the Otherworld as a ‘divine pasture’ may also be reflected in the symbolic (in a structuralist sense) meaning of cattle and its attributes – fur and hair – in European folklore and prehistoric funerary practices it is a derivative of the ‘basic myth’. This leads us once again to considering the notion of funerary gifts and the frequent associations of spindle-whorls with the cultic and ritual role of animal fur and weaving (Kowalski 1988: 124; Kajkowski, Szczepanik 2014). These aspects are also closely related to the chthonic god Weles.

KORPIKLAANI | UNLEASH NEW DIGITAL SINGLE 'BIRRA BIRRA' [FEAT. EMILIO SOUTO | SKILTRON]
Tumblr media
Finnish Folk Metal Superstars KORPIKLAANI have had enough rest and are now energized to begin the next touring cycle. The band will kick off the cycle with two shows in Japan at the end of February, followed by a UK tour in March with the new heavy metal sensations BURNING WITCHES and then four shows in Slovakia with local legendary rock act ARZÉN. Today, KORPIKLAANI are pleased to release another adaption of their hit song 'Beer Beer.' The newly launched lyric video for 'Birra Birra' which features SKILTRON vocalist Emilio Souto can be watched here: https://youtu.be/dqYem8LRa0s
Emilio states: "I was visiting the guys from KORPIKLAANI at Petrax studios during the recording sessions of 'Kulkija' and Jonne told me about the idea of making many versions of 'Beer Beer' in different languages and asked me if I could help with the lyrics for the Spanish version. I suggested a more "Argentinian-slang" version and they loved the idea!. Then a few minutes later after writing them, all of a sudden, I found myself recording the vocals! Maybe there was too much Birra that day for coming up with such a crazy version! Disfruten, escabien y a rockear!"

Hi! Do you know anything about Vyraj/Vyriy/Iriy (slavic heaven)? I can't find much information aside from wikipedia and there's not much there. Thank you!
Hi! There is not so much information about Slavic Heaven. Just references in folklore. I haven’t seen any articles exclusively about it.
The pieces that we know:
1. Slavs did have a paradise. With Christianization the word Irij/Virij/etc came to mean Christian paradise (aka рай/раj/raj/etc).
2. Slavs probably didn’t have hell at all. “Sinners” became spirits (mostly vampires and the walking dead). The category of “sinners” included not just evil people, but also people who died of violent death or severe illness; were too young or virgins unmarried; did commit suicide; or even were too emotional on the moment of death.
3. Irij is a place of endless spring-summer, gods, birds, insects, snakes and souls of the ancestors.
4. Souls of the dead can visit their relatives and friends in the shape of birds. All birds, in a way, ARE the souls of the dead.
5. Irij isn’t exactly on heavens. It’s placed over sea, ocean, a big river, forest, mountains or/and underground.
6. The Underworld of Slavic tales is definitely Irij. There live snakes, birds, magical creatures, Коschei, the souls of the dead and Devil. What else it can be?
