I really wanted to specifically talk about a certain demon character who's a Guard at Nan's village, bc I like his name alot. It's ofc in finnish so. I'll have to do some explaining but I just find it so cool

Here's our guy. Velvety smooth black fur. Mane. Can walk quadruped if he wants. His scars also glow white faintly the same as his eyes and mouth. His name is Syne

Syne is short for Synkän Yön Kulkija, which roughly translates to "Traveler of the grim night" (or dark night). Kulkija is a word that can also be used for when someone is just wandering or roaming but I said "traveler" in the sense that it gives the vibe of someone moving about in the dark of the night. Which is exactly the vibe the name is going for. Someone who knows the dark and nighttime as their home, as their own. It even sounds a bit vague and mysterious, ykno,, "I saw someone wandering in the dead of night", but I wouldn't follow, you'll never know what scares the night will bring.

Anyway I find the name very cool and I really like how it shortens to Syne

Korpiklaani published a new album! It's same old Korpiklaani, fun bangers from start to finish. What sticks out to me personally is that there's no slow or melancholic songs on this album, until the last track of the album, Harhainen höyhen. It's almost jarring since Kulkija from 2018 had the very atmospheric Harmaja, which was a very slow song (but a good one! Harmaja has a very special place in my heart).

However... When I say "it's same old Korpiklaani", it's... really same old. There's nothing new in their sound and it almost feels stagnant. I wish I could have something else to say about this album, but it sounds very similar to their previous music. Although, you could argue that is there anything "new" you could even do with folk metal, which by definition is very traditional. Maybe I just need to listen to this album a few more times.

Either way, I really like Saunaan. Halkoja, perkele!!

Korpiklaani - Kulkija

While folk metal is certainly not one of metal's more prominent subgenres, its far reaches and fascinating character from region to region give it a steadfast presence even if not as widely contributed to these days as death metal and black metal, and the unique forms it takes on and the inventive ways metal is applied to various traditional music styles under the folk metal umbrella is intriguing at the very least, which I why I always like to keep an ear out for some new folk metal to spice up my listening. And I have found myself longing for some vibrant, soulful folk metal in the vein of Korpiklaani this year especially, not because I haven't heard interesting interpolations of folk music elements on other albums this year, but because as much great black metal and death metal and hardcore and alternative metal and thrash and doom as I have heard this year, I've heard a lot of it this year, more than I ever have. I've reviewed somewhere around or above one hundred albums this year and I have just been craving a little change of pace, even if it's momentary, and I got it at the right time with Korpiklaani.

Finnish folksters Korpiklaani have long been one of their country's and one of the subgenre's most prominent and prolific purveyors and on Kulkija they show their comfort with integrating accordion and solo violin into folksy melodies alongside metallic instrumentation. It's a pretty predictable affair for the most part, save maybe for the run-time, but I wasn't diving into this album in search of boundary-pushing aspirations. I was just hoping for some honest folk metal and maybe a basketful of memorable tunes. Well Kulkija definitely provides the first, but as a pretty standard folk metal project by Korpiklaani's standards, it still leaves me wishing for more. The band perform as well as ever and blend their folk and metal influences as effortlessly as I would expect them to, but they bring a somewhat surprising lack of standout melody to an album that would thrive on them.

As folkishly typical as Kulkija is, it does come with a few notable moments of creative inspiration, the boldest of which (and my favorite of which) being the epic "Kallon malja", which features a pair of menacing, storm-brewing groove metal sections and a violin solo that mimics the whammy bar abuse of thrash-style solos in a surprisingly effective manner. The song "Sillanrakentaja" that follows also rides a similarly thrashy palm-muted groove, and the song "Korppikalliota" comes with a bit more metallic muscle than most of the rest of the album. The album's best moments aren't just it's heaviest though, the giddy string melodies on songs like "Henkselipoika" and the instrumental "Pellervoinen" are fine examples of the kind of splendid diversity folk metal adds to metal as a whole, stepping away from the doom and gloom and gore to channel metal into unifying and even cheerful melodies.

As consistently competent with its ingredients as the album is, it does run a bit long and it doesn't come with quite the level of memorable material to justify that length. That being said, it's still a pretty decent folk metal album that does its style justice and even comes with a few surprise deviations from the band's norm.
