Every time I hear Rasputina I am rocketed backward through time.
It is 2003, I am 13 & awkward, my hair is purple & I wear uncool wire glasses, my best friend’s brother just gave me a burned CD of random Rasputina songs.
I have a pretty ambitious TBR given that my husband and I will be on vacation for almost half of the month. And working when we’re not on vacation. But I want to get into the Fall spirit and I’m hoping to do that with a few new releases, a backlist or two, and a couple rereads.
1. Built to Last by Erin Hahn (NetGalley)-- Former child star Shelby and her former co-star are thrown together for a home remodeling show and old feelings rush to the surface. “Sparks and sawdust fly as Shelby and Cameron film the pilot for ‘Homemade’.”
2. The Final Gambit by Jennifer Lynn Barnes (New Release)-- This is the final book in The Inheritance Games trilogy. It’s no secret around these parts that I love Jennifer Lynn Barnes’ books so, of course, this one has been preordered for months. In book one, a regular girl’s life is turned upside-down when she discovers that a Texas billionaire has left her his fortune--disinheriting his own flesh and blood in order to do so. Avery and the Hawthorne grandchildren solve puzzle after puzzle to get to the heart of the mystery.
3. All of Our Demise by Amanda Foody and Christine Lynn Herman (New Release)-- Another finale. This one is the second book in the All of Us Villains duology. The first book was a combination of the Hunger Games, a Fantasy magic system, and Thriller. I don’t know that there’s a great way to talk about this one without giving up the plot for the first book. But this one continues where book 1 left off and our players all have choices to make, each with their own consequences.
4. Goblet of Fire.
5. Truly Devious by Maureen Johnson-- This one is a reread for me. I think I’ll be reading it for the...fourth time? That cannot be right. This book is set at a private boarding school for gifted children and follows Stevie Bell as she attempts to solve an old mystery while mysterious things begin to happen at the school
6. The Secret History by Donna Tartt-- After I read ‘If We Were Villains’ last fall, I’ve gotten a handful of comments telling me to read this one for the dark academia vibes. I’m here for it. According to GoodReads, we follow a group of clever misfits at an elite New England college who--under the influence of their charismatic classics professor--discover new ways of thinking and living. This sounds exactly up my alley and perfect for the Fall.
7. The Woman in the Library by Sulari Gentill (Kindle)--Another newish release (June). This one is set in a library where the tranquility is ruined by a violent scream. Everyone is told by security to stay where they are until the threat has been assessed. While they wait for the all-clear, four strangers at the same table pass the time by having conversations and getting to know each other better. It just happens that one of them is a murderer.
