Not sure if anyone's made a post like this before but Red dwarf really is the show of all time

It's got a genderswap episode, its got a bodyswap episode, it's got multiple clone episodes, plenty of alternate universes and a simply iconic musical number despite the fact that its not a musical show by any means

theres a trans computer, two counts of mpreg, insane levels of homosexual behavior and a robot who goes through a midlife crisis

it's got the most repressed man in existence who also happens to be dead, literally the most optimistic last human alive (seriously, how is he so positive all the time) and a dude with frankly the best wardrobe ever who also happens to be literally a cat

Theres dodgy BBC budget practical effects (which I love), copious moments which are insane in and out of context, sets that are held together with blu tac and a cult following that could probably once destroy anything

It's got that season which not many people like to talk about (cough 8, cough), one of the creators left halfway through and they've all been doing It for over 35 years and are still going somehow

God I love it so much, it really is the show of all time

(prompted by thinking about what makes him such a compelling & interesting character, which is his godawful personality that's 80% neuroses by volume)

it is too late to love him. he has been deprived of love during his most formative, tender years, throughout his entire childhood, and that has left him with deep, irrevocable damage that no amount of post-factum love is going to fully fix. the most faithful friendship and the most gentle romance aren't going to make him stop being insufferable; it's too late.

but also, three million years into deep space, future so removed that not only humanity, but even traces of its existence may be long gone — at this kind of scale, everything is too late. too late to be human, to be alive, to want, to go home. it's too late, and yet lister keeps at it, citing "just for shits and giggles" as his reason, which might be weird liverpudlian slang for "it's pointless to hope, but i continue recklessly hoping anyway, because i'm desperate like that".

I've gotta say, one thing I'd REALLY like in the special next year is another emotional scene between Rimmer and Lister, and maybe turn it on it's head by having Rimmer trying to comfort Lister instead of the usual Lister helping Rimmer dynamic they have in basically all of their 'emotional' interactions

And I guess there's the thing of "Rimmer's not that sort of person, his character isn't really like that", but I'd say that he's definitely developed quite a bit in my opinion, and now would genuinely try to help Lister if he was really not feeling great. Whether that's successful or not is debatable but I think it would be really nice to see him try to be properly kind to Lister, just once.

Basically all I'm saying is Moonlight speech 2.0 in next years special pls and thanks?
