Isabella of France
Isabella of France (c. 1292-1358) was the queen consort of Edward II of England (r. 1307-1327). She died in England in 1358 and is known to history as the "she-wolf of France."

EDWARD II OF ENGLAND
EDWARD II OF ENGLAND
1284-1327
Edward was the son of Edward I and Eleanor of Castile. Edward II was close to Piers Gaveston, best friends or was it a homosexual relationship? Regardless, Edward always kept Gaveston close by his side. His father concerned about his relationship with Gaveston, had Gaveston sent away before his death.
Edward II became king in 1307 at a time of peace and his first act as king was to recall Gaveston. He married Isabella, aged 12, the daughter of Philip IV of France in 1308. Instead of having his wife by his side, the king would only sit with Gaveston.
Gaveston who was described as arrogant had so much power it upset the barons and French royals, it was said England had ‘two kings reigning in one kingdom’. Due to peer pressure and under threat of being ex-communicated, the king was forced to have Gaveston exiled. It wasn’t long until he recalled Gaveston which upset many and the king was forced to exile him again. Once again, the king recalled Gaveston, and the barons had Gaveston beheaded in 1312. Edward was furious and upset and wanted revenge on those involved. After Gaveston death the king started to spend more time with Isabella, and the couple had a son and heir Edward.
In 1314, Edward was defeated by Robert the Bruce and England suffered from poor weather, famine and the king became even more unpopular.
Edward found a new male companion, Hugh Despenser the Younger. Despenser was loathed more than Gaveston, and ruffled many feathers. The king upset Isabella by taking away her children and giving them to Despenser’s wife.
Isabella and their son, Edward went to France to negotiate a peace treaty in 1325. There she turned against her husband and refused to return. Isabella fell in love with exiled Roger Mortimer, who had previously escaped from the Tower of London. Those in England supported Isabella over the king. The couple returned to England in 1326 and took control without a fight. Edward II and the Despensers fled and were captured; the king had no choice but to pass the crown to his son, Edward III, aged 14. Edward was imprisoned and was murdered. Despenser was executed by drawn, disembowelled, castrated and quartered.

Isabella of France (the great-great-granddaughter of Blanche of Castile and through her descended from Eleanor of Aquitaine) led an armed rebellion against her husband Edward Ii in 1326, and ruled England herself as regent for her fourteen year old son, Edward III. She was in her 30s. She made peace with Scotland and was generally successful. When Edward III grew up, though, he seized power from Isabella, and she retired at about forty. #isabellaoffrance #womeninpower #queenofengland #eleanorofaquitaine #blancheofcastile #medievaleurope #medievalengland

EDWARD II'S DEATH
EDWARD II’S DEATH
Edward II of England was disposed by his wife Isabella and their son became King Edward III with the support of the people of London. Edward II agreed to abdicate and his reign came to an end. His son became King Edward III and his coronation took place at Westminster Abbey in 1327.
Edward II’s companion, Hugh Despenser the younger was executed and the king was imprisoned in a fortress at Kenilworth.
Queen Isabella’s boyfriend, Roger Mortimer moved Edward II to Berkeley Castle, Gloucestershire in 1327. Edward II had luxury goods brought to him but was mistreated. Isabella and Mortimer were concerned about plots to place Edward II back on the throne, so they had him moved around to secret locations.
A rescue attempt of Edward prompted his murder. The King died at Berkeley Castle, most likely murdered. It was said he was murdered by being held down and having a red-hot poker inserted into his anus ‘with a hot spit put through the secret place posterial’.
King Edward III was informed that his father had died at Berkeley Castle. Isabella and Mortimer became powerful and greedy, but they didn’t hold onto power for too long. They became unpopular and when Edward III became old enough, he took revenge on them. The young king accused Mortimer of having his father killed; Mortimer was arrested and was hanged in London for treason. Edward III spared his mother Isabella and gave her a generous pension. Edward III defeated the Scottish and initiated the Hundred Years War with France. He wanted the French throne as he believed it belonged to him through his French mother.
