And let me warn you... It is a LOT

As with all ML we get 6 before 5

THEY ARE WITH THE BUBBLES AND HAIR FLIP! Adrien is so in love!

“Why did she leave so quickly?” “She doesn’t do fencing with us.” Kagami I love you dearly

Good gravy the water color is pretty, and Adrien is simping so damn hard for it

Omg, was that a Marinette-ism? Adrien demonstrating PEAK simp behavior and I’m living for it

“You look at her like how I wished you had looked at me” DAMN! Kagami went for the throat with that one. She makes solid points

So cutting away to kitty section, Marinette made stickers cause they got a record label.

Did they mention Bob roth?

Adrien calls her, she flips a bit, but kitty section just look at her like it’s Tuesday

Points to Adrien for actually calling about it. Sure Kagami pushed him for it, but boy f***ing did it

Kitty section heard her mention Adrien mention feelings and they all crowd her. That’s hilarious

Kagami is like “not the Museum!” But he did it

Luka appears to be part of the cheer squad now. Which is what I expected at this point. Makes him more tolerable

But Marinette is not exactly thrilled

Wait! The statue scene!? Remembered positively? Someone summon @gentil-minou

So seems that Luka noticed something was up. Guess I can’t have nice things

So Marinette isn’t denying she loves Adrien but that s*** is complicated and that the statue scene is cringe. Which we relive again!

Well damn, Marinette is very much aware of her issue regarding romance. I swear it’s like something happened that gave her love trauma or something. Aside from chat blanc I mean.

Wait a minute, she is having Luka accompany her… wait a minute, is this Frozer 2.0?

ML really gave Marinette and Adrien emotional support Exes.

Well at least with context I don’t feel annoyance at the scene.

This episode really is if Frozer and puppeteer 2.0 had a baby but it was made with love despite the tension

Marinette and Adrien have VERY different memories of that scene

Adrien! MY GUY! MY DUDE! Fucking dropping that bomb with the softest smile

Even Luka and Kagami are like “wait what!?” Then just walk off while Marinette panics

Luka explains why Adrien and Marinette are having trouble communicating their feelings in a nice way

Adrien clarifying that he does understand it was awkward but he wasn’t embarassed

Ladybug wanted him to stay. Ugh!!! My heart!

Welp, as lovesquare trash, this episode was amazing

10/10

It had good stakes, excellent drama. And it made me enjoy every scene with the blue boy

I loved every minute of it.

I liked the fight, I enjoyed the hilarious antics. It was done right.

My rating (1-10): if it ends the way i think (hope) it will 10/10 no notes perfect historical fantasy shoujo series <3 if it doesn’t i hope we all explode

My favourite character: predictable answer but yona really is THEE protagonist of all time. she’s such a vibrant character even before she begins her journey and seeing her grow throughout the series is just so !!!! she cares so much and is ready to do anything to protect everyone and she’s clever and kind of insane but also silly and i love her so much!! also honorable mention to my special little guy gija <3 i adore his relentless optimism and how No Rational Thoughts Only Emotions And Actions he is 99% of the time. also he’s just so relatable To Me when he’s in poor little guy mode. i adore the entire hhb though, and so so so many of the side characters. they’re all just so well-written, it’s impossible not to love them

My least favourite character: probably chagol, mostly bc i keep seeing theories about how he’s not really dead and blah blah blah (in the famous words of kesha) and i’m sick of it. he’s a good villain and while i believe kusanagi could pull off his resurrection well if she so chose, as a meinyan fan, i LIKE that her abuser died so unceremoniously. let him rot, i say! even if he does get resurrected he’ll always be Just Some Gross Loser Guy to me

The character I think I'd be friends with: gija :) we’d get along so well on account of The Neuroses and The Only Child-isms

The character I think I won't hit off with: keishuk doesn’t seem like someone who’d appreciate my whimsy tbh

My favourite episode/scene: (don’t say gijaeha love potion shenanigans don’t say gijaeha love potion shenanigans) trying to pick One Scene in a 40+ volume series pains me so i’m gonna cheat and pick five (in no particular order) :3 (1) this scene from ch 163. all the hakyona scenes are so fucking good but this one’s just so so so sweet and i think about it all the time + it encapsulates so many elements of their relationship that i love, mainly how deeply they care about each other and help each other grow (where’s the post about austenian romance as a mechanism for self-actualization…), but also how goofy hak acts when he wants to cheer yona up

(2) yona getting the south kai envoys to admit to the shit they’ve been doing in kohka and then going “okie dokie now let’s get this meeting started shall we :)” she’s an icon and a legend <3 (3) gija in ch 252. absolutely devastating chapter and i need my guys back posthaste but OHHHH!!!!!!! i have so many thoughts about gija and monstrousness but i’m just gonna link to this post lest i go on too many tangents again…. (4) the hot springs chapter of course OF COURSE what kind of gijaeha enthusiast would i be if i didn’t bring that chapter up. it’s one of the most crucial chapters for the development of their relationship and it so perfectly captures how different yet similar they are + getting to see so much of jaeha’s thoughts on page really helps contextualize a lot of his actions in general (also i find his tendency to overanalyze and act on his assumptions instead of just. talking to the guy who’s been nothing if not remarkably earnest from day one lest he accidentally makes the situation worse to be both very endearing and very funny). (5) the “he’s stronger than i am” moment in ch 168. actually that whole battle scene Fucks Severely on so many levels but that!!!! line!!!!!! it makes me so crazy like. jaeha’s not just trying to stall for time, he genuinely thinks gija’s stronger than him (“from good morning to good night” bonus chapter) but like. looking at it purely physically they Are equals. but gija doesn’t hold back like jaeha does (ch 75, ch 170) and also it’s clear from the hot springs chapter that jaeha admires gija for not letting himself get shackled by his past (even though he’s Literally Being Haunted). also the moment right before that, when jaeha fucking. obliterates the bow of the soldier who tries to shoot gija (he’s doing SUCH a good job pretending that they’re enemies btw) is soooOOUGHHH like jaeha doesn’t get angry often but he’s FURIOUS in that moment and it’s so delicious (i think it’s the “let’s deliver him as a gift to lord kuelbo” part specifically that gets to him bc like gija can dodge one (1) arrow just fine without help but he risked the whole plan—) (getting vaudeville hooked off the stage) wait i lied :) (6) the blue forest mini arc is soooo good and so dear to me i HAVE to mention it!! it really showcases how caring sinha is + there’s also the lore drops about ghosts and the hakyona/gijaeha parallels, both of which make me wanna explode <3

Whose clothing style I like best: jaeha. the slutty little crop top wins by a landslide <3 i wish we got to see it more often (wistful sigh)

Times I watched it (and if I would again): once all the way through but i’ve reread parts of it many times for fic research and while theorizing. i definitely wanna reread it front to back though, all the parallels and foreshadowing make it so perfect for rereads

Grief, especially the anger stage of grief, just gets Real Bad. Anxiety as well, his anxiety manifests into nervous scratching which, if it goes on for too long mans getting booboos. 🌹 ROSE - do they like valentines day? have they been confessed to before? have they confessed to anyone before?

He doesn't mind it, if his partner is into it he can play along just fine, but honestly he'd prefer to spend the day lowkey at home, rather than try (or have his partner try) for a reservation at a restaurant or whatever.

As for confessing; w his first partner they were the one 2 confess, but w Leon he was the one to confess, but he can be bad at verbalizing stuff so it was rambly as hell lol 📣 MEGAPHONE - how loud are they? what do they speak like? got a voice claim?

He grew up with 4 siblings so he knows how to raise his voice when he needs to but honestly he's? average i guess voice wise, not really a mumbler but you dont need to lean away when he's talking to you lol. Again, bad at verbalizing sometimes, lots of country-boy-isms/slang/whatever, his voice is a bit higher pitch than people expect considering his size. I unforch do not have a voice claim, Caedric 💥 COLLISON - what emotions do they have trouble dealing with?

A lot of his emotions,even happiness, can lead to him 'glitching' when they get too intense since he grew up kind of uh, stunted, he's gotten better as he's gotten older but when he gets super upset Watch Out 🌹 ROSE - do they like valentines day? have they been confessed to before? have they confessed to anyone before?

I think he'd be interested in it, he can be schmoopy when he wants to be, so a day dedicated to it would probably be fun for him. For confessing he was the one who confessed to Dimi. 📣 MEGAPHONE - how loud are they? what do they speak like? got a voice claim?

Doesn't mumble but is pretty quiet, esp at first, but as time passed he got more confident and started speaking up a bit more. He's got a bit of a raspy voice. My friend suggested L's english va for his voice which is honestly pretty damn close i feel. Cada 💥 COLLISON - what emotions do they have trouble dealing with?

Not super into it but enjoys it to a fault (into the romance, not so much the commercialization of it). I don't think there was a confession between them and Arlo i think they just sort of, happened, lol 📣 MEGAPHONE - how loud are they? what do they speak like? got a voice claim?

Theyre one of those people that can start getting loud when they get excited, they try to keep it in check but hey, that's hard to do sometimes. I jokingly declared the more femme voice from the song partners in crime was their voice and honestly im sticking with it.

Engagement!

Tanner and Tabitha are engaged! 

Tanner felt the Lord moving in his heart to propose to Tabitha, so after asking for her parents permission he and his parents made the drive into Willowcreek for dinner with the Hobsons. The group had dinner at a new restaurant, taking the opportunity to fellowship with one another and talk about current events.

Towards the end of their meal, Tanner asked Tabitha if they could ‘talk about something’ by their table. Once they were up and standing by the table, Tanner got down on one knee and asked Tabitha to marry him, and she said yes!

Without another word, Duncan wraps his arms around your shoulders, pulling you into a bone crushing hug. And it is a hug, alright – just not a very good one. Your nose smashes into his shoulder painfully, and it would almost be enough to break you out of your crying spell, had you not been caught off by the sudden movement. 

This is… the first time you’ve ever gotten a hug. Actual human contact. His touch sends a soft ache spreading through your chest - a sweet warmth that your brain recognizes as affection. Security. The need to make you feel safe. 

It’s the hug of someone who has never hugged before – truly, if you were going to be honest, it was probably one of the worst hugs you have ever experienced; Duncan’s form is awkward, arms just a bit too tight and angled weirdly. 

You realize that he’s hugging you out of his own volition - that he wanted to let you know that he cared about you. And it’s the thought of someone comforting you, rubbing your back (which he is doing, albeit the motions feel stilted), that makes the bubble in your throat grow, chokes your own words out of your mouth, makes you cry even harder. 

Your hands clutch the back of his robes, clenching it between your fists as if he would disappear if you ever let go. You want to say something, hug him back, offer support, but you can’t. Your tongue feels like cotton, and your brain blanks out on the words needed to speak. Just the thought of someone hugging you was enough for another round of tears to leak through, and after everything you’ve been through crumbles in a matter of seconds.

“Run away with me.”

The words are flying out of his mouth before he knows it, before he even has a chance to logically think.

Run away? To where? Duncan wasn’t dumb enough to think that whatever calamity crawls out of the darkest parts of the spiral would simply stop because the Wizard wasn’t going to take care of them.

Even so, he doesn’t take back his words. They hang heavy in the crisp, muggy air of Triton Avenue. A storm rumbles above his head, and the thunder almost serves as a warning; a sign from Raven – to take back what he said or he would regret it. Regret trying to take her champion.

He knows you must feel his heart thudding fast and hard in his chest, arms still wrapped securely around your shoulders. Your face is still tucked in between the juncture of his neck and shoulder, and your hands are still clawing into his robes–it doesn’t hurt, by any means, but he’s caught off guard at how surprisingly.. clingy you are.

He wonders if you heard what he said.

“Did y—”

“I heard you.” You cut him off. Your voice is quiet and soft, but has a rough and scratchy quality to its tone that had been heightened from your crying session. 

There’s another agonizingly slow moment of silence, and in it, Duncan feels the gentle rustle of the wind brush over your figures. He never quite believed Suzie or Artur when they told him that Triton Avenue was cold, but the wind brings a chill that he can’t quite blame necromancy for. 

And when you speak, this coldness sinks further into his stomach.

“I can’t.”

“You can’t?” Duncan furrows his brows. "What do you mean you can't?"

When you pull back away from his chest, the descent is slow–like molasses. You don’t see a point in being discreet as you wipe the remaining tears away from your eyes, for he had seen it all, and sucked in a sharp breath. And when you meet his gaze, your eyes are red-rimmed and bright.

For a moment, the breath catches in his throat.

“I can’t.” You emphasize, this time. Your voice is more even than it was before. It sounded like the Wizard he recognized, and not the one that had been bawling into his robes moments ago. “I have responsibilities.” 

“Are you dumb?” Duncan says, and he can’t amend the way it comes out of his mouth–clunky and harsh, like a hammer striking iron. “It’s killing you! Look at you!”

He grabs your shoulders as he says this, and the touch is almost too much to bear with something like this. 

“I’m aware.” Your voice is bitter as you spit out the reply, but there is no denying the exhaustion in your voice. “I… don’t have a choice.” 

Duncan’s lips press into a thin line. 

“I just can’t.” You repeat, and a watery tone edges your words. “I have duties, I’m… I’m a savior now. There’s no room for what I want and my desires. They wouldn’t let me.” 

“‘They’?” Duncan quirks an eyebrow. 

He sees the way your gaze drifts over his shoulder, eyes glazing as if searching for something off in the distance. He thinks you must have found it, the way your pupils dilate, and stare for a long time.

“I used to think it was just Raven and Spider.” Your voice dips into something quieter, whispy. Like this conversation was just for him.  “There’s something else out there. I’ve never seen it, or heard it, or.. smelled it. I can only… feel it.” 

Duncan takes a chance to glance behind him, following your gaze—he expects to see a figure at least, and it only furthers his confusion about the entire thing. 

It must be his eyes playing tricks on him, because he does see it—a vague shape. A human-like figure.

He blinks and it’s gone.

“As fun as running away sounds,” Your voice brings him back to the present, back to your now neutral expression. “I don’t have a choice. Truly.” 

Really, there are more silences now than you care to admit, and it’s only when you make the decision to stand does he know your final answer. It doesn’t stop you from holding out your hand to help him up from the wet, muddy ground, and it doesn’t stop him from taking it. 

And even when all is said and done, you’re still grasping each other’s hands. Your fingers press against the pulse of his wrist, which beats heartily underneath your touch. 

“We could go somewhere new.” Duncan says. He doesn’t want to admit that he sounds desperate. Lonely. “The spiral is big. We could find some place where they don’t need us. Where no one ever gets the chance to take advantage of us.”

You can’t help the smile that breaks across your face, bleeds into your voice. It sounds too good to be true, even for you. “Oh?” 

“We don’t have to stay wizards. We could even swallow our pride and become pirates!” 

“You love necromancy, Duncan.” You say, and he does. He does. With every bit of his mind, body, and soul. “I’ve heard rumors on the shore that they’ve outlawed all magic. It would kill you.” 

His lip curls. 

“Admittedly, it would kill me, too.” Your hand slowly slips from his. “Even throughout all these years… I’ve come to love magic far too much to let it slip out of my fingers.” 

“...Will you come back?”

Duncan’s voice is far too vulnerable for his liking–it had only been today that he expressed his feelings of ostracization, of needing to feel wanted. He had made his first, real friend and it had been you, the one he had been previously sent to get rid of.

He doesn’t want to see you go if it means there’s a chance you won’t return.

Still, a smile spreads across your face at that question.

“Of course.” You say. “Nothing’s killed me yet—I consider that sign enough that I’m on the right path.”

You pause.

“And I want you to come with me.”

He’s not sure if he heard you right. Either that, or this was your idea of a prank. 

Or you’ve finally lost it.

“Do you hear yourself?” Duncan says, because he finds himself reeling. Of course he wants to join you—but also, are you crazy? The blood is roaring loud in his ears. “This is—this isn’t even my journey to go on!” 

“Who cares?” You reply, and he both hates and loves how flippant you’re being about the entire thing. “I didn’t exactly get the wizarding book of rules when I first got here. We’ll be fine, I think.” 

“I couldn’t even beat you!” 

“To be fair,” You say, and the smile on your face is a little bit too cocky for someone like you—someone meant to uphold the pedestal of light wasn’t meant to look so smug. “No one has been able to beat me yet. I can protect you, if that’s what you’re worried about.” 

“I’m not worried about that!” He hisses out, but there is a semblance of an embarrassed flush creeping over his features. “And besides, I can take care of myself!” 

“Then we don’t have any problems.” 

There’s a long moment where he just—stares at you. Like he’s trying to figure out your goal for this, your angle. 

“....Why?” 

He feels conflicted. He feels lost. And most of all, he feels confused. Was one, heartfelt conversation all it took to get on your good side? It’s no wonder why anyone with bad intentions, but a good mask, was able to twist your promises of companionship and turn it into something else.

“...You know me the best.” You say, after a while. The sky rumbles above you once again, the final warning you receive, before a torrent of rain begins to pour down on you both. Your robes are soaked before long, bleeding into darker colors. 

The two of you don’t move. 

“Saving the world gets a bit lonely, too.” You continue on, and he recognizes that look on your face—it had been there at the beginning, when you had shown up unannounced in this field, and sat next to him without another word. 

“You’d say we could start over as friends… but I’m a very busy wizard.” Your smile is sad, this time, when it pulls at your lips. “We’d become strangers before long. A something that was there, but could never happen.” 

“...And you think taking me along a dangerous quest will fix that?” 

He hates how it, once again, comes out of his mouth wrong. He had never been good with dealing on how wonderful it felt to be wanted at someone’s side. 

“I said I’d protect you, didn’t I?” Your face tilts upward, and allows the drizzle to wash over your face. It feels almost holy in nature—your soul feels cleansed. 

“I don’t care what Ambrose thinks. I’m not his student anymore. I don’t care what the Arcanum thinks. They don’t trust me.” 

And when you open your eyes and face him, they open slowly, as if savoring this one singular moment. And the gradual motion of your hand as it reaches up from your side, before holding it out for him to take, is measured. 

You are in no rush. 

“I think I can trust you.” You say, softly. “Don’t you agree?” 

His hand as it slides into yours is cold and wet. But it still makes your heart soar nonetheless. 

“Yeah. You can.”

I am genuinely fearful of how rotten people’s brains are becoming… or I suppose brains have always been rotten it’s just so bizarre to see the way people process/consume information lately lmfao

imo a lot of it stems from people's brains being hammered with information coming from left and right all the time since childhood and the inability to process it in this rapid speed... first time in history when 4 year olds can acquire knowledge way beyond their cognitive abilities simply because they have an iphone to play with. i really am not surprised when i see 14 year olds fighting online whether he him lesbians are valid or w/e because they must feel forced to Know Everything and Say The Right Thing since otherwise your twitter friends are gonna cancel you...

i am not surprised that some girl learns all the -isms and then manages to produce something like a call out post where shakespeare (sexist), burroughs (killed his wife) and celeste ng ("describes asian men as misogynists") are all considered equally bad - and some real fucking assholes like lovecraft dont even make the list. its the unwillingness to engage with "problematic" topics, inability to entertain a thought without accepting it. and they return to the safe haven of dumbass ya romance where people say therapy shit like "i see how upset you are and i consider your feelings valid".

if you don't engage with a wide variety of throughts, ideas and concepts and don't try to think about them critically then it is really hard to develop a brain that processes thoughts, rather then just dumbly accepting and regurgitating them. just my 2 cents.

MindfulWrath’s Books of 2021

For funsies, I decided to keep track of every book I read in 2021 and write a short review of it. I didn’t get through quite as many as I would’ve liked, but I’m hoping to read more in 2022 anyway, so it keeps things achievable :)

...

1. “The Three-Body Problem” by Cixin Liu (translated by Ken Liu): Humanity makes first contact with aliens who are looking to escape their doomed homeworld. Excellently constructed, beautifully written, and not my jam. I wanted to like this book. Recommended if you like hard sci-fi, not so much if you’re in a tough place with regards to ‘faith in humanity.’

2. “Juliet Takes A Breath” by Gabby Rivera: A Puerto Rican lesbian from the Bronx has a summer internship with a white feminist author in Portland. A coming-of-age story that focuses on the power of queer Black and Brown women. The narrator’s voice is strong, clear, and at times poetically beautiful. Recommended.

3. “On Tyrrany: Twenty Lessons from the Twentieth Century” by Timothy Snyder: A disappointingly centrist retrospective at the way previous European dictators/fascists have risen to power, and what lessons might be learned from that history. There are some good recommendations of other works to read, and some useful lessons to be learned, but I had a hard time getting past the recommendation of “H*rry P*tter and the Deathly Hallows” as an antifascist work and the presentation of “governments seek to have a monopoly on violence” as part of a healthy society. Not super recommended.

4. “Better Allies” by Karen Catlin: An okay guide to being a better ally in a corporate environment. About as radical as you’d expect from a book on that particular subject, which is to say, it’s unsalted butter on milquetoast. Written primarily for managers and above. Recommended only if (1) you need help navigating the ‘corporate’ side of being a decent human being, or (2) your manager is well-meaning but absolutely clueless about ‘where to start’ and isn’t ready for any kind of emotionality in the airing of grievances from marginalized people.

5. “The Poisoner’s Handbook” by Deborah Blum: A fascinating look through the history of poisons and the birth of forensic toxicology in Jazz Age New York by an extremely accomplished science journalist. The book is written with crystal-clear class consciousness, and doesn’t shy away from the harm that politics of the era did to everyone who wasn’t rich (many of these harms are grimly familiar to modern audiences). Lacked really any mention of race, however, which is especially glaring considering the setting. Still, if you have even a passing interest in chemistry, murder, or Prohibition, or if you just really don’t vibe with the mayor of New York, you’ll probably enjoy this book. Recommended.

6. “Hunger Pangs (Fluff and Fangs edition)” by Joy Demorra: A nice fluffy romance involving vampires, werewolves, a dash of political intrigue, and a masterful portrayal of disability and accommodations in a fantasy/premodern setting. Enjoyable and not too heavy. Recommended.

7. “Piranesi” by Susanna Clark: I can’t tell you anything about the book—other than that it is about a labyrinth—without giving too much away. Suffice it to say that it’s an INCREDIBLE book. The first book I’ve read in a long, LONG time that made me long desperately to go to the fictional world it depicted, and to allow me to entertain the idea that, if I stood in just the right place and turned my head to just the right angle, I might be able to get there. Highly fucking recommended.

8. “Sorcerer to the Crown” by Zen Cho: a period romance between a Black man and a mixed-race British Indian woman, but with sorcerers and dragons, etc. Not for anybody who’s trying to avoid the -isms and -phobias of the world, but it does handle them masterfully. Definitely for anybody who likes period romance but is sick of reading about the same rich white archetypes over and over. I did enjoy it, although I probably would have enjoyed it more if my head hadn’t still been occupied with ‘Piranesi’. Recommended.

9. “The Mysterious Affair at Styles” by Agatha Christie (reread): Christie’s first mystery, and the first Poirot mystery. It’s a good one, although you can tell Christie hasn’t quite hit her stride yet. Be forewarned that the book contains the kind of racism you’d expect from a middle- to upper-class white author in the early 1920’s. Still enjoyable, not least because Hastings is a bona fide himbo from a hundred years ago. It’s all right, but I don’t exactly recommend it.

10. “A Carribbean Mystery” by Agatha Christie (reread): a Miss Marple mystery set in the Carribbean in the 1960s. Christie has obviously improved a great deal, although the book is more overtly racist than ‘Styles,’ mostly because it has more opportunity to be. It’s a good mystery, but I don’t know that I can recommend it.

11. “The Pale Horse” by Agatha Christie (reread): Hands-down my favorite Christie mystery. It’s an ingenious plot, I really like the narrator(s) and the secondary characters, and the whole story has an aesthetic that I can only describe as ‘noir in the ‘60s with a bit of hedge witchery thrown in.’ Recommended.

12. “Curtain” by Agatha Christie (reread): the final Poirot mystery. I really did not like this story. Eugenics rears its ugly head throughout, I didn’t enjoy being around any of the characters, and the mystery isn’t any fun. If you’re bound and determined to read every single Poirot mystery, by all means, have at it, but otherwise I can’t recommend it.

13. “The Rembrandt Affair” by Daniel Silva (reread): An Israeli spy chases down a stolen Rembrandt. The more I think about this book the less I like it. If you enjoyed ‘Leverage,’ this book will at best disappoint you and at worst infuriate you. Not recommended.

14. “Heaven Official’s Blessing: Vol. 1” by Mo Xiang Tong Xiu: A fun and enjoyable romp in the world of wuxia, starring the Himbo God of Fuckups and a ghost king who is very obviously infatuated with him (obvious, of course, to everyone but the himbo god!) The Himbo God of Fuckups is trying to get his shit together after being kicked out of heaven twice, and gets drawn into quite a bit of political intrigue while just trying to do some simple, easy Make Ghosts Stop Murdering People work (and trying to win back some followers after 800 or so years of being God of Fuckups). I’ve heard tell that the story gets incredibly heavy later on, but this first volume was pretty chill. I’ll probably read vol. 2 at some point, but I won’t be waiting on tenterhooks. Recommended.

15. “Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation: Vol. 1” by Mo Xiang Tong Xiu: The novel upon which the series “The Untamed” was based, and HOO BUDDY DID THEY EVER CENSOR SOME STUFF. A former practicioner of the demonic arts is resurrected into the body of a gay man over a decade after his untimely death, and has to try and (1) figure out why he was resurrected, (2) pretend to be the person whose body he is now inhabiting lest the people who killed him the first time come back and kill him again, and (3) solve the murder of a dismembered ghost whose individual body parts keep murdering people. He also discovers that his so-uptight-only-dogs-can-hear-his-farts former classmate is suddenly surprisingly chill with his whole deal. Maybe it’s just because I’ve watched the entirety of The Untamed, but this was a damn good read and I basically couldn’t put it down. I’ve already preordered vol. 2 and 3. Highly recommended.

ARC Review: Crying Wolfe by Kerrigan Byrne

4/5, releases April 19, 2022.

Rosaline Goode is already something of a scandal, the result of her bigamous father's first marriage. Shy and sheltered, Rosaline would prefer to map out the stars than mingle with high society and look for a husband. But she's left with no choice but to marry after an impulse gets her caught in the bedroom of Elijah Wolfe, the unscrupulous, wealthy American mine owner visiting her brother-in-law.

Eli has no plans on getting married. However, his friend insists that he protect Rosaline's honor, despite the fact that nothing happened between the two of them. Considering himself too old and too mean for someone as seemingly-genteel as Rosaline, he's reluctant to move forward with the match. But despite the less than ideal circumstances, there's something between the two of them...

I love Kerrigan Byrne. Love her. She's one of my top three favorite romance novelists. However, I must admit that her Goode Girls series has been something of an adjustment for me. It's tonally fairly different from her Devil You Know trilogy or the Victorian Rebels series (which Goode Girls spun off with in A Dark and Stormy Knight/Seducing A Stranger, which feels more Victorian Rebels). While there are still the dark Byrne-isms in Goode Girls, I would still say it's considerably lighter than the other two series, with more humor and sweetness in the romances. The books are also much shorter, usually clocking in at a little over 200 pages on my Kindle, with a typical Byrne book being 370-400 pages. This means a faster-paced romance, with the sex (which is still just as hot, don't get me wrong) happening sooner and the relationship progressing more quickly.

I will admit that at first this left me a little confused. Not against the series at all, but just... not sure what to expect. Now I feel like I've settled into the Goode Girls series, and while I wouldn't mind Byrne returning to the darker, more epic fare of her previous works, I enjoy these books a lot and see what she's going for with them. In a way, the Goode Girls books remind me of old school category historicals. They're quick and dirty (very dirty in the case of Crying Wolfe, God) with relatively simple, straightforward, yet still kind of bananas plots that are easy to understand. The connections between the leads are kind of instantaneous, but it doesn't quite feel like instalove. Instalust, for sure.

Crying Wolfe is just... super fun. There are quibbles I could make, for sure--Eli and Rosaline's relationship does move quite fast, and his Americanisms are kind of.... over the top. But like, in the best, campiest, most fun way possible. In a very real way, he's like a fuckable Woody from Toy Story in terms of the way he talks. Except he doesn't just say "there's a snake in my boot" he also talks about how much he wants to fuck her. Which, honestly? An improvement. I was all about. I was a fan. And for me, this was one of the more successful entires in the "American romances English rose" category, which is pretty hit or miss.

Rosaline is a bit less entertaining than her man, but I still personally really liked her. In a lot of ways, she's kind of a classic historical romance heroine. A throwback, if you will. She's sweet and shy and virginal without being an idiot, and she has a "quirk" which gets her in a lot of trouble (and in the marriage). It's a pretty basic opposites attract story. He's pushing 37, damaged, and doesn't want to love; she's 21, doesn't know the ways of the world, and just wants to live a quiet life by herself. If you have an issue with age gaps, this is not the one for you.

If you are one for age gaps..... Uh, it's real hot. She did not let us down with that wedding night. So be advised.

I can't say this is my favorite Kerrigan Byrne, or the most complex thing she's ever written. But for someone who'd been reading a lot of books that have been tough to get through, it was kind of perfect.

If you have the spoons for some commentary: over the past 3 or 4 months, there has been a rather noticeable shift in the authors/series I follow where they're suddenly labeled, and I'm not paraphrasing here, 'paranormal women's fiction'. Any thoughts as to why or to what end?

Oh, yeah, I believe "paranormal women's fiction” is an attempt to create female-led stories for readers, who don’t necessarily want to read romance our YA or who don’t want their stories classed as such. A lot of sci-fi and fantasy written by female authors often get wrongly lumped in with Young Adult or Romance, when that’s not their genre or demographic at all.

I’ve actually seen some fairly harrowing and gruesome content get classified as “teen” cause of the paranormal element so everyone thinks “ooh Twilight” when the intended audience is most certainly adults. But y’know, a woman wrote it so it must either be Young Adult or Romance cause that’s what we’re good at, apparently. Sexism in publishing is wild. (Along with a lot of other -isms)

read this for... research, i guess ? i wanted to see how people write erotic romances without them becoming anticlimactic as soon as the, uh, climax was reached & they fucked. tbh dont think this one really suited for that research bc i did think it a bit anticlimactic, but i'll admit i'm def not the target audience for this. at least it was abt baking/chocolate/that sorta thing which was nice

omg. fucking. book of all time. book series of all time. read the first 2 in quick succession & have been portioning the rest out to myself in little doses bc theres only 8 and the 9th is still a ways away, but fuck yes i would rec these books. the second one sucks shit but peter is such a CHARACTER that i didnt mind pushing thru and since then all the others are great actually !! this is an urban fantasy set in london and ugh. LOVE her. highlighted this one as one of my faves of the year, but mainly as a catch all for all the ones in this series

same series as nr 27, book 3 which very much immediately cleared up any uncertainty i may have had from reading book 2. also, bc this IS relevant to how i enjoy these books: if ur at all interested in audiobooks this one is a MUST listen instead of a must read, the narrator is a king of all time and does so many accents and all of them, except the american ones, so well

48: king rat, china miéville

China miéville is my fave author so its a highly recommended book either way, but king rat esp made me feel very very tender hearted... it's his first novel & a good intro to his writing bc while he has a lot of china-isms in there, it still follows a very traditional plot structure. ive read 3 by him this yr and this one's my fave of the bunch for sure
