This song is a Romanian song. So the story behind this one isn’t that deep: when I go somwhere for some days I always have one or more songs that remind me of that experiences. I used to hate this song until I went to an Italian Olympiad for 5 days and I heard it everyday. Week 8

I enjoyed this week’s reading on Ancient Greece. Although I know I had a unit on Greek mythology in high school, I had no other recollection of having ever studied Ancient Greece. Therefore, I learned a lot from this reading, for there was a lot of content, but I really enjoyed it.

Starting with the podcast, I enjoyed how they started the podcast by asking people “what is beauty?” and having them define it in six words. It caused me to think about the question myself, and set the stage for the rest of the podcast. I found it to be a fascinating point when they stated that if we look at Greek statues today, they seem to still fit our standards of beauty, but we don’t necessarily respond that way to other cultures statues. I agree with this statement, for I think Greek art is extremely beautiful. I then learned that symmetry, proportions, and great attention to detail are what helps make Greek art beautiful to so many people. It was fascinating to pinpoint these aspects of proportion and symmetry as being why our standard of beauty is so similar to the Greeks.

Next, with the readings, there was a lot of information, so I wanted to share the information I found to be both new and fascinating.

First, there were a few quick facts I learned. For example, I knew the Greeks started the Olympics, but I did not know that they reckoned time in Olympiads – four year periods beginning with the first Olympic Games. Additionally, I found it interesting that the Olympic games were so important that all wars on the Greeks were halted so athletes could travel safely to Olympia. Another fact I found fascinating is that the Greek language has persisted relatively unchanged to the present day.

Secondly, I learned that their gods were anthropomorphic and had human personalities and conflicts. I also learned that the Gods were referred to as Olympians because they lived on Mount Olympus after they over threw the so-called Titans. I also learned that the Greeks erected grave markers, which were memorials to the deceased rather than offerings to the gods. The use of grave markers as memorials seemed to be slightly different than the way previous cultures, like the Egyptians, treated the deceased, so it stood out to me.

Third, I learned that the best preserved examples of large scale Greek pictorial style are mosaics from the Hellenistic period. The book gave us a mosaic example of a Roman copy of a Greek fresco from around 300BC that depicts Alexander the Great defeating the Persian king Darius II at the Battle of Issos. I was not only impressed by this artworks detail, but also found a specific part of the art to be fascinating. The part I found fascinating was that the artist included in the mosaic a Persian solider who watches a reflection of himself dying on a shield. I found this to be just fascinating from both an intellectual thought process of portraying the scene and the soldier in such a way, but also from an artistic aspect of creating the detail to portray this scene occurring as a reflection on a shield.

Fourth, the Temple of Athena Nike I found to be another beautiful Greek creation. The small marble temple is stated in the book as being located on the southern edge of Acropolis and in the book it was beautiful to see it pictured overlooking the town behind it. I enjoyed the smaller size and gracefulness of this temple in contrast with heavier proportions of the Doric columns in Parthenon. The fact that the temple celebrates a military victory, but it is not known which one due to the complication of the fact of when it was designed and finished, also adds to this being one of my favorite pieces in this chapter due to the mystery behind it. Lastly, the book stated that the best surviving sculpture form the Nike temple is the relief titled Nike Adjusting Her Sandal. It was so interesting to me that Nike simply adjusting her sandal was seen as significant enough to make a sculpture of.

In conclusion, there are many fascinating and beautiful pieces of art from Ancient Greece. I think my overall take away from this chapter was that regardless of the piece of art, the Greeks naturalistic and organic forms, their understanding of human anatomy, and their attention to detail, symmetry, and proportions is astounding and breathtaking.

8 cientistas brasileiras que estão trabalhando em projetos incríveis

No dia 28 de fevereiro deste ano, o Brasil testemunhou um feito admirável: em apenas 24 horas, um grupo de pesquisa liderado por mulheres sequenciou o genoma do coronavírus. Tempo recorde, já que até então a média dos outros países era de 15 dias. A descoberta, por sua vez, essencial para que se detectem mutações e para o desenvolvimento de vacina ou outras curas.

A verdade é que há muitas cientistas brasileiras trabalhando para melhorar o mundo, e nem todas elas têm seus feitos noticiados. Pensando nisso, selecionamos oito delas; em diversos campos de estudo, estas mulheres procuram e criam soluções com potencial de grandes transformações.

Sabe o que elas têm em comum? Além de estarem tentando salvar o planeta – de uma forma ou de outra -, todas são parte da rede de alto impacto do programa Líderes Estudar, da Fundação Estudar. Além de bolsa de estudos, essencial para que conseguissem o embasamento necessário para tais feitos, a iniciativa dá acesso à rede, mentoria e oferece outras oportunidades de desenvolvimento. Na Bioengenharia…

Nadia Ayad, a jovem que criou um sistema inovador de dessalinização da água

Nadia Ayad é uma carioca formada em Engenharia de Materiais pelo Instituto Militar de Engenharia (IME). Em 2017, estampou manchetes ao vencer um concurso mundial organizado pela companhia sueca Sandvik sobre aplicação de grafeno. À base de carbono, o grafeno é o material mais fino e mais forte já criado, além de ser transparente e um excelente condutor de calor.

Quando estava na faculdade, Nadia pesquisou suas propriedades e avanços recentes relacionados, até ter a ideia de usá-lo em um sistema de filtragem e dessalinização de água para reciclá-la e assim, combater, a escassez em regiões necessitadas, como as semiáridas e áridas. Ou seja, sua descoberta tinha potencial de tornar potável a água desses locais.

Entre trabalhos voluntários, estágios de pesquisa e iniciações científicas no Brasil e no exterior – ela passou um ano na Universidade de Manchester, onde o grafeno foi criado, e estagiou na Imperial College London – Nadia decidiu seguir carreira em Bioengenharia, que trata do desenvolvimento de novas tecnologias do ponto de vista da engenharia para resolver problemas da ciência da vida, tema do doutorado que realizou na Universidade da Califórnia, em Berkeley. “[A bioengenharia] vai desde a criação de próteses e novos equipamentos médicos até o estudo de criação de tecidos e órgãos sintéticos e engenharia genética”, explica.

Sayuri Magnabosco, a jovem que criou embalagem sustentável que substitui isopor

Sayuri Magnabosco nasceu em Dionísio Cerqueira, em Santa Catarina. Ainda no ensino médio, no qual se formou com o 2º melhor desempenho acadêmico dentre 334 formandos, desenvolveu uma embalagem biodegradável de cana-de-açúcar para substituir bandejas de isopor, material que não é reciclável.

Na Febrace, feira de ciências da USP, ganhou medalha de prata em Ciências Biológicas, mérito da Sociedade Brasileira de Microbiologia, e reconhecimento da ASM Materials pela exibição destaque em material sciences. Na Genius Olympiad, NY, foi medalhista de bronze em Design. Com esse projeto, Sayuri também ganhou o concurso Village to Raise a Child de Harvard, o Prêmio Jovens Inventores do programa Caldeirão do Huck, o Prêmio Jovens Fora de Série da Fundação Estudar, e foi nomeada “uma das 14 mulheres incríveis para ficar de olho” pela Editora Abril.

Hoje ela faz graduação em Engenharia com major em Engenharia Biomédica na Dartmouth College, nos Estados Unidos, onde atua também como assistente de pesquisa. Entre os projetos a que tem se dedicado estão a produção de anticorpos monoclonais para criar a primeira vacina contra o citomegalovírus (CMV) e avaliações de um novo dispositivo usado em estudos sobre diagnóstico não invasivo de doenças infecciosas.

Na Ciência da Computação…

Carolina Guimarães, a jovem que criou sua própria plataforma de ensino

Desde os 8 anos, Carolina Guimarães participa de olimpíadas científicas. No ensino médio, representou o Brasil em competições internacionais de astronomia no Uruguai e na Indonésia, trazendo para o país muitas medalhas e menções honrosas.

Na mesma época, criou sua própria plataforma de ensino, chamada Cálculo Zero. Disponível na internet, a iniciativa despertou o interesse de 20 mil estudantes pelo Brasil. Ainda no ensino médio, a jovem também desenvolveu um software didático para uma bicicleta ergométrica geradora de energia. Em outro projeto, fez experimentos em túnel de vento e simulações digitais. Pelo desempenho na equipe, foi convidada a apresentar um artigo seu em uma conferência focada em engenharia mecânica na Argentina.

Carolina estuda Ciência da Computação e Matemática na Universidade Yale, nos Estados Unidos. Quando voltar ao Brasil, quer usar a tecnologia para trabalhar com educação de impacto.

Na Eletrônica…

Isabela Rodrigues, a jovem que quer criar um robô para explorar o espaço

A estudante cearense Isabela Rodrigues interessou-se desde cedo por robótica. Graças à dedicação à área, conquistou oito prêmios e mais três classificações para a RoboCup, competição renomada de robótica, em sua fase internacional. Também coleciona medalhas na Olimpíada Brasileira de Astronomia e na Olimpíada Brasileira de Física.

Durante a graduação em Engenharia Elétrica e Eletrônica na Universidade Stanford, nos Estados Unidos, a que se dedica hoje, pretende aprender mais a fundo sobre os temas e criar um robô que possa ser usado para explorar o espaço. Em meio a isso, também quer servir de exemplo a outras jovens. “Quero elas saibam que podem chegar lá”. Para ficar de olho!

Na Engenharia Biomédica…

Georgia Sampaio, a jovem que descobriu como diagnosticar a endometriose de forma mais barata

Georgia Sampaio nasceu em uma comunidade de Feira de Santana, na Bahia. Vinda de uma família humilde – seus pais não têm curso superior -, sempre buscou estudar nos melhores colégios do estado, por meio de bolsas de estudo conquistadas por conta de seu desempenho acadêmico. Aos 12 anos, começou a aprender inglês sozinha. “Tive minha vida completamente mudada pela educação”, conta.

Quando estava no ensino médio, sua tia foi diagnosticada com endometriose – doença crônica que atinge milhões de mulheres no mundo – e teve que retirar o útero. Georgia testemunhou seu sofrimento e começou a pesquisar formas de tornar o diagnóstico mais rápido e acessível financeiramente. Com o avanço do projeto, conseguiu provar sua importância. Em 2014, teve sua iniciativa premiada pela Harvard Social Innovation Collaborative.

Com o sonho de estudar fora, ela se aplicou à universidades americanas – e foi aceita em nove. Dentre as instituições, Yale, Columbia, Duke, Dartmouth e Stanford. Escolheu a última, onde fez sua graduação.

Na Física…

Bárbara Cruvinel, a jovem que desenvolve instrumentos para o estudo das galáxias

A produção de conhecimento foi o que atraiu Bárbara Cruvinel Santiago desde cedo, quando ela participava de olimpíadas científicas. “Sabia que queria seguir carreira acadêmica e produzir conhecimento em vez de só aplicá-lo.”

Para isso, fez a graduação em física em Yale. Passou dois meses, suas férias de verão do seu primeiro ano, no CERN – o maior laboratório de física de partículas do mundo, localizado em Genebra, na Suíça.

Seu dois últimos anos foram dedicados aos estudos em um laboratório de física atômica em Yale. Logo após se formar, ficou um ano trabalhando no LIGO, laboratório de ondas gravitacionais do MIT, que, em 2017, ganharia o prêmio Nobel da Física. “Meu trabalho por lá ainda envolvia muito do que eu fazia em Yale, trabalhando com lasers, equipamentos eletrônicos e programação, porém o objetivo final seria usar o que a gente desenvolvesse com aplicação em astrofísica.”

Como próximo passo, resolveu fazer PhD em Física na Universidade de Columbia. Atualmente, Bárbara atua como pesquisadora em astrofísica na instituição. “Basicamente, meu trabalho é tentar desenvolver instrumentos que possam ser mais eficientes para estudar a interação entre galáxias com o universo ao redor delas”, explica.

Na Química…

Ligia Melo, a jovem medalhista em olimpíadas internacionais de química

A aptidão para as áreas Exatas vem de berço, no caso de Ligia Melo. Ela é filha de um professor universitário de matemática e de uma analista de sistemas. Ligia já conquistou medalhas na Olimpíada Brasileira de Física, na Olimpíada de Química em São Paulo e primeiro lugar geral na Olimpíada Brasileira de Química. Os resultados atraíram olhares do colégio Ari de Sá, em Fortaleza, que lhe ofereceu uma bolsa integral.

A partir daí, frequentou as aulas da turma ITA/IME, enquanto treinava para as olimpíadas internacionais. Com tanto preparo, recebeu mais premiações: prata na International Chemistry Olympiad e ouro na Olimpíada Iberoamericana de Química.

Ao mesmo tempo em que competia, Ligia dava aulas e gravava vídeo-aulas. “Eu sou apaixonada por ciência e quero ser cientista, mas também quero que mais pessoas tenham acesso a isso”. Hoje, ela se dedica à graduação em Engenharia Química na Universidade Stanford, nos Estados Unidos. Para ficar de olho!

Na Neurociência…

Giovanna Ribeiro, a jovem que criou um projeto de interface cérebro-máquina

Nascida em Itajubá, em Minas Gerais, Giovanna destacou-se não só pelo bom histórico escolar, também por sua paixão pela neurociência. Com sua dedicação à uma rotina de estudos em casa, ela obteve o primeiro lugar na Olimpíada Brasileira de Neurociências.

No ensino médio e em seu gap year, estagiou em laboratórios da área na Universidade de São Paulo e na Universidade Estadual de Campinas. Nessa última, conduziu um projeto próprio de interface cérebro-máquina (ou cérebro-computador), caminho comunicativo direto entre cérebro e um dispositivo externo.

A nível internacional, embarcou para o Instituto Weizmann, em Israel, para trabalhar com eletrofisiologia. Atualmente, conduz sua graduação em Neurociência e Ciência da Computação na Universidade Johns Hopkins. Ela planeja elaborar projetos que coloquem mais jovens em contato com o campo. “É importante desenvolver o pensamento científico e aprender a lidar com a diversidade, o que é a base da ciência”, afirma.
