Engineer Mark x Captain!Reader: childhood best friends, what if the events of ISWM never happened (like, the whole worm hole shit)

You and Mark had been the best of friends ever since you could remember. Holidays? Spent at each other's houses (only because the two of you would beg, and beg, and BEG your parents until they gave in). Birthdays? Spent together. Recess during the school days? Spent mostly together, with an ever-rotating group of friends who joined you two. As the years passed, and your friendship only grew stronger

You two had the greatest idea! You two would both get degrees in engineering and piloting/being a captain! That way, on the off chance you both are on the same spaceship, you two can help each other out! So, that's exactly what you two do. Eventually, after a lot of hard work, the two of you become certified. Once that happens, Mark tells you of his plans to build his very own spaceship and have a very dependable crew (made up of a few of the friends you've known through the years)

It's honestly been quite a few years (probably 5 or so) since you've seen each other. Mark has been busy building the Invincible and Invincible II, and you've been captaining other spaceships. The talking you two do has dwindled down to only chatting occasionally, mostly at night before you go to sleep. Eventually, the bord tells you you're transferring to a new ship. They don't elaborate, nor do they tell you the crew. While you expected it, the secrecy annoys you sometimes

When you finally step abord the Invincible II, you're greeted almost immediately by Mark. He looks about ready to cry he's so happy. You two embrace, having finally been able to do what you set out to do. Once you let go of him, he gives you a tour, he introduces you to the crew, you give a toast - a speech to really remember and inspire all your friends (new and old), and then you enter cryosleep

When you wake up, Mark hands you some coffee, you watch as Gunther prepares to go down to the surface, Celci informs you of the status of the colonists, and Burt tells you a nice poem about how the universe is playing out as it should. You then make your way towards the glass to observe the planet that will be your new home. Man, where you excited for there to be running water so you could get a shower
