Tonight, for once, the Bellhop can see the Auditor. But only through the mirrored ceiling of the lobby and polished glass of the elevator. The Bellhop, after the guest has gone to their room, lingers in the elevator.

The Auditor isn’t sure what the Bellhop sees but the Bellhop raises a hand to her mouth, tugging her glove off with her teeth. She reaches out, ungloved hand finding the Auditor’s own.

“Don’t you get tired of doing this?” the Auditor asks, speaking more to the phantom of herself in the glass than to the Bellhop.

“Never,” the Bellhop insists, looking wounded. “Not when it’s about you.”

The Auditor laces their fingers together and relaxes. “Thanks, Hop.”

The Bellhop holds the Auditor’s hand tighter. Blood drips from the Bellhop’s raw flesh onto the polished floor of the elevator. Together, they stare at the steel doors, with their mirror shine, and watch the way the room plays out. Faces from the walls. And the guest takes their own life with anything they can.

The Bellhop gets giddy about the end, giggling to herself and holding the Auditor’s hand tighter.

As as the guest expires, the Auditor grits her teeth. No. She wants more time. More of this time. More being able to be seen and touched, if not heard.

But her hand slips out of the Bellhops and the Auditor returns to her void.

If there were things to throw, the Auditor would take her anger out on them. But it’s just her. Alone. So the Auditor turns her rage and short, blunt fingernails on herself. She claws her face to bloody shreds, enraged to be given a scrap of attention only for it to be wrenched away.
