Demo- Half A Decade Hangover and The First Step. I genuinely think this man hates being an alcoholic. He loves it when he can be fun and have a good time, but he hates the fact that he depends on it so hard.

Engie- Um, It's Kind Of A Lot. Okay, so this ties back into one of my first headcanons, I think. So I genuinely think the reason Engie is so close with Pyro and the other Mercs is because this man didn't have a family that really cared for him. Like not abusive but just not present. He. Is. Scared. Of. Love. He's scared the people he cares about will be taken from him. He's scared that he cares too much and that he'll never feel that in return.

Heavy- (When I tell you I struggled on this one) Venetian Blind Man. Okay, I'm not going to lie. This one is more of the style and music than the lyrics. I just think it fits, I really can't explain it.

Medic- Your Body, My Temple, and Yes to Err is Human, So Don't Be One. I think Your Body, My Temple fits him well because this man literally loves the human anatomy. He views the body as a temple, but not in the way like gym bros and fitness bloggers do. No, like this man thinks the human body is something to worship (nonsexual). Also, a lot of connections to people, which is shown in the song and i also think the religious aspect just fits some how. Yes to Err is Human, So Don't Be One is definitely a song that for me captures a sense of eerieness and almost inhumanity in a person, not saying that Medic isn't human or doesn't have humanity but I definitely think he has moments where he forgets about that. He always catches himself, tho. EDIT- JevTheJester let me know that BlackBoxWarrior - OKULTRA also fits Medic, and I agree. I think the upbeat tempo is a great fit, and it fits insanely well! ( The longest description goes to my wife, of course 😮‍💨)

Scout- Tomcat Disposables and Love, Me Normally. Oh boy. Tomcat Disposables just fits him so well. Like I think this man loves his family and home so much and just wants to provide that for a future family. I think he's also just really scared of dying (again)? Because I definitely think on the outside, he's all like cocky and chill about it but on the inside he's so fucking scared. Another mix of being confident and cool on the outside while also being really scared on the inside, but this time it's about getting close to people! Abandonment issues and all that wacky stuff. Give this man a hug pls.

Sniper- Becoming Lastnames. Let's be real. This man has family trauma. He loves his mom to death, but I definitely think his dad was distant, and when he was present, he was very strict and cold. He definitely wants a family he can be a good father/husband to, but he also knows that's probably not possible.

Spy- Cicada Days and I/Me/Myself. Commitment issues and genderfluid? He's just like me fr. (Jokes) I think Cicada Days can represent the times he's actually felt love, but he got scared and left. Specifically with Scout and his mom. I/Me/Myself, I don't think this man knows how he feels about his gender identity and hates it. Like def has internalized a lot of shit, being queer being one of the major ones. (all people who can change appearances at will in media are genderfluid come at me).

Soldier- (I struggled with this one too, ngl.). Morning Announcements. I think it just matches him and upbeat vibe with no really idea behind it.

Pyro- 2econd 2ight 2eer and Memento Mori: the most important thing in the world. This dude definitely has high energy, and I can picture them singing 2econd 2ight 2eer and like really getting into it (if they could actually be understood). Okay, a thought. I can vividly imagine Pyro (if they could be understood). Singing this song with Medic. Both of them actually like the concept of death.

Honestly, I 100% understand where you're coming from regarding the triad poly being unequal and unfair to the MC. I got an inkling of that vibe as well, though it was only from reading ask scenarios. I never took it seriously back then. I figured there's only so much a few ask scenarios could show — you'd probably expand on their dynamics within the demo. But now that the author herself has made the decision to remove the triad poly option, I've been thinking more and more about why I got those niggling feelings in the first place.

The asks about the one-on-one interactions between romanced!V and MC are very cute, but something I've noticed about the poly asks is that MC almost always gets pushed to the backburner in terms of V's affections; both MC and V clearly love Zero, and Zero unquestionably loves them. But not much is shown of V being intimate with MC in the poly asks — they give more of a friendly rivals vibe than actual lovers vibe.

The only poly scenario I can remember off the top of my head where V is showing some semblance of romantic affection directly towards MC is during the Cuddle Pile Ask, and even that could just be taken as platonic affection.

So, yeah. I get where you're coming from, and I agree. A triad poly would be unfair to the MC since V is clearly biased towards Zero. It would, frankly, be heartbreaking for an MC to have romantic expectations of V, only to realize that V is incapable of giving them as much romantic intensity as they give Zero. It would have worked with the older versions of V, but it wouldn't work with the version of V we see now.

As you've said in a previous announcement, the world of memento mori is still ever evolving. It's perfectly understandable for certain characters, dynamics, and settings to change as they develop more and more. The current V wouldn't work as an RO, and that's fine — at least we have Delphine now! I think it's wonderful that you've gotten such a firm grasp over who your characters are and that you're staying faithful to their core.

yay new musics!!! i am like a tiger that found a new meat pumpkin to roll around in my enclosure :3 anyway i only listened to a few of their top songs on spotify bc i'm lazy but i liked them more than i thought i would!!

i think this one is my favorite actually! i like the creepy vibe and the way the singer doesn't really stop or change the tempo except for the chorus, gives it like a droning rambling kind of losing it vibe, very nice ^^

god what a fucking mood. yeah i can relate to this one, i like the way it's sung very frantically and rushed in relation with the lyrics. you gotta slow down and appreciate what you got unless you wanna spend your life in search of something you'll never find :/

i understand this is super super dark but have you considered: the vocals are very nice. i'm so obsessed with the singer's VOICE.... it reminds me of like a 50s and more ranged kate bush, very nice :) but not just that!!! the TONAL CONTROL, the TEMPO, the KEY SWITCHES....all genuinely genius. i wish there was more stuff from the band, the last album was in 2012 and i'm not sure if they're just on a long hiatus or broke up entirely but i hope it's the former, i really liked this song :(

i've been getting into will wood lately and i think his voice is so goofy and fun. i like how he distracts you with it and the trumpets but the lyrics are super deep and clever if you think about it. he does that for all his songs and i don't think i could pick a favorite out of his songs honestly. like if i HAD to i would choose memento mori i guess. MAYBE the vampire culture part of suburbia overture but only for the growling, i'm a sucker for when singers growl. especially when women do it but will wood gets a pass too. because i am an egalitarian. you're welcome.

Penny Dreadful #6: The Vampire Bat

Hey there, everyone!

I know, it's been a while since I posted anything new that wasn't just a reblog. It's not been a huge priority, to be honest.

That being said, I've been feeling the Hallows season this year very deeply, and I'm all immersed in my love for Gothic mystery and romance, and so I've decided to share something with y'all!

Now, this spread is a prediction spread that kind of came along unexpectedly. I was sitting around chatting with my daughter, we were talking about witchcraft and Gothic things (and of course playing with tarot cards), and it sort of prompted a Google search for "vampire" spreads.

We looked and looked, but didn't find anything particularly nice-looking. Pretty much standard stuff- spreads that were standard that had been reskinned to say "vampire," or spreads that were basically just clunky piles of vertical cards. Which, honestly, astonished me. People have been taken with the glamour of vampires for a while now, and I'm shocked there aren't more representations of vampire vibes in the tarot spread world, especially considering how many goth-themed tarot decks are out there.

Anyway, I hope this spread is something new, and I haven't just seen it somewhere and filed it in my mind, then regurgitated it elsewhere. Even if the layout has been used by other folks, I hope the end result is something unique.

Now, this reads very similar to my Memento Mori spread, with a few small differences. It's a prediction spread, but in true Penny Dreadful fashion, I designed this spread with the understanding that some futures we just don't want.

The spread is read thus:

The first card is read as the vampire who is coming to your door. This card represents the basic situation coming.

The second and third card are read together as the wind which carries that future to you. You can think of these cards as a description of the surrounding forces around the coming situation.

The fourth and fifth card are also read together, as that which connects the outside forces of cards 2 and 3 to the central card. Sometimes they refer to motives or wishes, sometimes to obligations or concerns, but they represent the central card's link to those forces.

Now, this spread isn't just for predictions. Like the vampire of folklore, the future can be horrible and deadly. Fortunately, there's one feature for this spread that allows us to keep it away, just like one might do with a vampire.

If you wish this fate to turn away from you, you can reassemble the cards into a warding symbol of some kind, something which keeps away evil. For Christians, you might use a cross, while Wiccans might use a pentacle- holy symbols are traditional wards after all. For myself, I prefer laying them in a pattern like the one on the right in the image below.

It's a five-petaled bloom, reminiscent of the wild mountain rose, which like garlic is a traditional herb used to prevent vampires from bothering you. In specific, it's said that the wild mountain rose keeps vampires in their coffins. So, I use that one to prevent the fate from even leaving its birthing place.

If, however, you'd like the fate as predicted to come your way... simply tell the cards that you invite it in. Perhaps leave your window open at night?

omg I'm so glad you asked this question!! I've been watching horror since I was 14 and have seen many good (and bad) films over the years and I am an avid listmaker so I've got some gems for you!

☆ if u wanna avoid specific triggers I would HIGHLY recommend the website: doesthedogdie.com it tells you if a movie contains anything from needles to animal death, whatever you don't wanna see, it will tell you which movies to avoid! ☆

~ Spider Baby (1967) spooky vibes, a gothic black and white horror about two creepy sisters. this one definitely has a nicole vibe, and I don't remember it being too disturbing (also u don't see much bc it's b+w)

~ Flowers in the Attic (1987 and 2014) not particularly horror but a very spooky vibe, and of course Nicole got her stage name from this story! a gothic setting, family secrets and a horrifying conclusion, perfect autumnal watch (but be warned)

~ Carrie (1976) apart from one particularly bloody scene, the gore in this movie is minimal and not from wounds caused on screen, what happens when a bullied young girl with telekinesis is pushed to her limit? it's a classic for a reason and one of my faves, plus her prom look is gorgeous ♡ ~ ♡

~ Whispering Corridors: Memento Mori (1999) this movie is a classic Korean ghost story, and one of the first films in South Korean cinema to feature a kiss between two girls. the relationship between these two girls is complicated, but it has a true message of bullying in school and homophobia

~ House of Voices/Saint Ange (2004) creepy girls boarding school, and the two lead actresses are so pretty and I've posted screencaps of it before. ghost story with gorgeous visuals and Nicole would probs love this movie

~ Black Swan (2010) obsession, perfection, beauty, girl becomes woman (and it's terrifying). I LOVE this movie, there's a few body horror scenes however the psychological is what makes it an amazing film!! Classic, I could rewatch it forever and Nina's outfits are to DIE FOR. balletcore slay

~ Look Away (2018) and My Sweet Audrina (2016) both starring the lovely India Eisley and have a gloomy atmosphere and not very gory at all. both are some of my fave movies, look away is all about beauty and a shy girl becomes popular after discovering her darker side in her reflection. and my sweet audrina is about a girl who can't leave her gothic house after her sister (with the same name as her) died tragically in the woods.

I hope this list was somewhat helpful! I'm sorry if any of these are too much horror wise (I may have forgotten specifics as some of these I watched YEARS ago) but happy viewing!! ♡ I hope you find one that you like

Notes on piece #1:

This one was possibly the hardest to work around, since there is a pretty small chronological window where they would be able to spend some quality time together, so I'm sorry if this isn't exactly "growing up". I knew I had to include Akane though, since she was such an influential figure in K(yle)'s life. I imagine that all three of them would enjoy spending the time in the Biotope Garden. Akane would teach them a lot of things, read aloud or tell stories about her life. She was probably telling them about the meaning of different flowers and of love, and that would inspire Luna to make those flower wreaths for everyone (that one she's making is for Sigma) while Akane would take a nap on K's shoulder - she's just an old woman, after all. Considering the calla lily's symbolism, I'd say it is rather fitting for the place - purity, faithfulness, death. I tried to make it sweet and a bit melancholic. Materials used: watercolors, watercolor pencils, Faber-Castell Pitt pens.

Notes on piece #2:

This one really stuck with me, because I love those two and that timeline still gives me the feels. At first, I'd wanted to make it into just a makeshift wedding. Then - bam! - I remembered the famous painting by Gustav Klimt, "The Kiss". Thus, this one artwork was born. The story is that Sigma wanted to make something to cheer Diana up after they find out that she is expecting, and to prove his love to her, so at least if something happens, they would be together. And so he secretly prepared all those elements and clothes and rings (he's so skilled on tech stuff - and most likely chemistry as well - that it wouldn't be a problem at all to do even with scarce supplies. My headcanon is that he would also be good at sewing and such, with his fine motor skills). The environment is the mix of the Healing Room elements and also that official artwork where Diana is holding a skull and a bouquet of daisies. You can tell that I've got just a little bit carried away, lol. I've specifically left it up to the viewer's interpretation, so it could be both happy and angsty at the same time. Remember: Memento mori if the nineth lion ate the sun. Materials used: gouache, Faber-Castell Pitt pens, Sakura Pen-Touch gold marker.

Notes on piece #3:

This was the first out of the three I'd finished actually. I didn't want to repeat myself, so I've made them don the traditional Japanese kimonos and make Carlos go and visit Kurashiki family in Japan instead. Uchikoshi did say that Akane is an ideal Japanese woman, after all, and she certainly lives up to the title here, hehe. Guess who got drunk and is about to get an earful from his sis because of  photobombing: "It wasn't THAT finger!". Carlos is very excited to be celebrating the holidays with the crew (Maria is the one taking the photo), and Junpei is just very proud of his wife and children (Rei is holding a temari ball and Quark a kagami mochi. Nova is just there being cute) . I aimed for a very light-hearted vibe here. Materials used: alcohol markers, pigment liner, Uni Posca pen, Sakura Pen-Touch gold marker and several types of washi tape (which were a major headache to work with, and I had to use tracing paper to stick them on and then cut them out. I hope it was worth it).

I wish you would write another darker fic because 'Memento Mori' shattered my heart into tiny pieces in the best way possible 💖 Wouldn't even necessarily need to be as dark as that, but I adored how you handled the whump elements alongside Miles's extreme worry and it convinced me that I could read a hundred hurt-comfort fics from you and never get bored.

Or on a lighter note, another adorable sick-fic along the lines of 'Aren't You My Baby?' would be wonderful because a) you can never have too many sickfics and b) yours was beautiful. And also because that would technically cover our shared love of hurt-comfort as well 😉🥰

i want to write more dark fics too, and i have so many ideas it's kind of concerning, but alas my fluffy smutty heart always wins and i somehow always end up choosing either tooth-rotting fluff or hardcore smut or a mix of the two as my wips. i found i have to be in the right headspace to write different genres, and dark fics definitely require a Certain Vibe TM to them. i hold 'memento mori' very dear to my heart and ever since posting it i've been considering writing a sequel, but as of now i've been focusing on another project and i haven't really been able to put it on paper. but yeah, i definitely plan on writing more dark fics in the future!

and of course more sickfics are to come <3 i love hurt-comfort too much, in every way and to every degree, for me not to write more fluffy sickfics - or darker fics where they suffer through unspeakable trauma, to go back to 'memento mori' </3

#41: cr2.wad (Crumpets 2) (2024)

I guess Ribbiks retired? I wasn't in the Doom community again until the middle of last year and had gone ghost for a couple years before that, so I guess this is news to me. Regardless, they have shadowdropped this excellent little morsel of challenging goodness in the form of cr2.wad.

Episode 1 (maps02-04) are light on the challenge and have a very Kuchitsu-esque influence to them. Angluar geometry, not that hard, focuses on exploration. In one of the maps (I'm blanking on which one) there is a nice flower garden where a key spawns! I should mention before I go any deeper that according to Ribbiks these are speedmaps, and by god do they not feel like them.

You sort of have to appreciate Ribbiks as a Doom legend, being able to understand this game SO well to string together various concepts and ideas of a fight in so little time. Geometry, thing placement, and monster placement are all beautifully intertwined and there are countless works of theirs I could list that fulfill this standard ever since day one, and this is no exception.

Another thing I like about this is that monster placement (mas o menos) stays the same across difficulties; the major adjustments lie in ammo and health. For E1, this doesn't matter much as its motifs call for an easier time, but things get into proper Ribbiks form in E2 (maps05-07). I'm getting a sort of... Memento Mori, D2ISO/Scythe X Jungle motif metal and verdant green with nature vibe out of the aesthetic? That's another thing about these maps, they are GORGEOUS while not straying too far from vanilla idealisms.

In this second episode, players will face moving combat puzzles, usually involving a cyber turret from afar that will be your arch-nemesis for most of the map until you can afford to telefrag him, with the green low-HP Cyb being used for more incidental encounters.

Everything climaxes at the final map, a slaughter map through and through if the final fight doesn't convince you. I feel proud of myself for beating this one, even if it was on HNTR and with saves on the last two maps.

Seriously, check this one out. You see the simple title, you see there's only practically 6 maps, you're thinking "Why do I play this?".

My answer to that would be... Why wouldn't you? We got friggin' RIBBIKS maps in 2024. Do yourself a favor and don't miss this one.

10,000 gecs by 100 gecs (i hate some songs on this but the ones i love are awesome)

el comienzo by grupo frontera (texmex music and it slaps)

the evil genius by mr eazi (apparently he pioneered something called banku music but all i know is that i love it)

unreal earth by hozier (i don't even need to rec this but it was on the list so have it lmao)

like..? by ice spice (less than 30 minutes but full of vibes and bops)
