Sims 3 Error 12 "fixes"

Been looking at the infamous error 12 today while playing bald gate and have made a lil bit of progress that I think I should put somewhere, mostly so I don't forget. (AKA just use dxvk for smoother gameplay AND less crashes!)

While none of this is really a complete fix, I think it's a step in the right direction and someone smarter than me might be able to skip a couple steps on their path as a result.

The issue: Sims 3 is a 32 bit game and has a hard limit of 4gb RAM. I have no idea what happens if it hits that limit because I don't have a save bloated enough (yet), but I'm guessing it'd crash. The base game on an extremely bloated save (for me) sits around 2600mb-3100. For whatever reason, saving the game causes a spike in RAM usage ranging from 50 - 400mb+, which if you're lucky will error 12 you, and if you're unlucky will crash you, throwing your last hour+ of gameplay into the bin.

In general, if you're around 3200mb usage, you should've saved 10 minutes ago.

A couple "fixes": Part of the issue is that the game seems to load certain objects/textures into RAM, with VRAM being capped at around 840~mb on a good day, and (maybe?) contributing to the overall limit. Easy way to fix this seems to be using DXVK, which, for me at least, removed the RAM bump when objects are loaded. 0 lots detail loaded? 2700mb, 13? 2700mb. I might write a proper installation guide for it, but for now there's a bit in my general performance tweaks post, along with my config. Another fix is, of course, the tried and true, quit your game every hour, clean your save, pray to god thing, but at certain family/save sizes it does seem like you're just kind of circling the drain. I would recommend if you are playing a 300 person household who own the entire town, dropping ObjectSizeCullFactor down in your graphics.sgr file (also in my tweaks). It's personal preference but 20~ should be mostly unnoticeable while greaaattly helping the initial bloating. I've noticed around a 250mb~ drop from the default settings, but that could just be luck. The rest of my settings don't(and shouldn't) have any impact as far as I can tell, but I'll look more later. Another thing that might help if you're already getting the error and desperately need to save, is unloading lots. There's probably a cooler way of doing this, and there's potential for a mod, but try flying your camera into a far corner, entering the map mode, pressing tab and looking up into the sky/towards nothingness before saving. This gets me around 150-200mb

Setting max detail lots to 0 also helps, but isn't exactly doable for most people (lowest is 1 in game). TS3W.exe+86C647 writes to the value if you're feeling zesty. There's other addresses that could potentially help but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. Ideally this would be automatically set when saving, or even more ideally, we could just call a purge/reinitialize every so often. I'm pretty sure the game can reclaim memory, I've seen it happen, I just have no idea what triggered it.

Other basic render-based settings seem to have no impact on RAM/VRAM, which is in line with my sgr stutter findings about clipping distance and fog. Still need to test more tho.

Anywhoo that's all for now. I'll probably keep at it tomorrow, I'd like to see what exactly is causing the bloating and if it's vram based or ram, I feel like it's something really silly that should be easy to fix, but we'll find out

All this effort and it doesn't even work. I'm not mad, just disappointed. Current theory is that I didn't include an important part of it in the while loop. The bot scans new posts, and I'm not gonna re-post this for the second time. It's only been actually tested two or three times including this try, and I'm keeping this as a sort of devlog. Update 2:

I restarted the OAuth apps that I made earlier today (an OAuth callback server to catch the keys, and another OAuth thing to generate the Authorization verifier). I worked almost all day to get these two to work together. The API ended up sending this error, and I don't know what it means, but it doesn't throw any errors client-side. Here's the error it throws. {'meta': {'status': 429, 'msg': 'Limit Exceeded'}, 'response': [], 'errors': [{'title': 'Limit Exceeded', 'code': 0, 'detail': 'Minor hiccup. Try again.'}]} Like, okay, great. Now I gotta actually look at the documentation and find out what this magic gibberish means, because this could relate to all those times I tried to authenticate, OR I hit the daily limit on posts seen by my bot, which I highly doubt. Update 2.5 after some research, I've learned absolutely nothing. That error code is a giant ball of nothing that basically says I exceeded a rate limit, but doesn't give any explanation as to which rate I exceeded. Thanks, Tumblr. At least Reddit threw client side errors that you didn't have to go to a broken API console to see. Fuck all of you, and I'll see you tomorrow.

Side note: I am surviving off one breakfast pizza from Casey's, one Pipeline Punch, one grape flavored 3D, 4mg Estradiol, 50mg Spironolactone, and I currently have 100mg Progesterone dissolving in my stomach, which at this point, might actually kill me. It's only 9:36 at the time of writing this, but it feels like I've been working on this for days. Just woke up and re-ran all the assorted programs just to get a fresh start. I'm still getting that error code, but more importantly, my access token and secret changed? I'm not expert when it comes to stuff like this, but I though tokens and secrets are constant and specific to apps. I can't actually test this thing until the API lets me through. Update 3.5

Found the error code. It wasn't way too hard, but it means my bot probably did something way too much yesterday and I have no idea what. It works on the server's clock and goes by callendar day. This means that if a bot hits the error code at 11:59 PM, it can hit it again at 12:00 AM. For an error 429 to happen, any one of the following has to trigger it.

300 API calls per minute, per IP address.

18,000 API calls per hour, per IP address.

432,000 API calls per day, per IP address.

1,000 API calls per hour, per consumer key.

5,000 API calls per day, per consumer key.

250 new published posts (including reblogs) per day, per user.

It still doesn't work, but I am one step closer. Because of Tumblr's broken-ass console, I've had to find an alternate way to get an OAuth key. It turns out I was using a temporary access key, which is why it changed when I re-ran everything. I had to do this by using two other scripts. One of them is Tumblr's interactive console on Github , and the other one was a Yaml parser because boy do they like to encrypt. This has been my morning so far. Day two and 5 scripts later, just to finally have something that I should've had at the start.

sorry but i don't even think that's the problem. even w no customs the economy would be major fucked. you gotta remember half these custom owners were already rich by trading from fr or other shit in the first place. before customs even released there was inequality bc rich players could come in from other games and instantly be stupid rich on dv. wealth transfers over. then of course it snowballs and woo hoo they can buy customs w that. plus the folks who fart out like 300 rlc a month to buy monthly chests then resell for potatoes. and they were always gonna do that, customs or not.

i agree there are problems w how customs were handled, it does compound the existing bullshittery, but y'all are way to narrow about it sometimes. they are not the sole cause of every economic issue. on any game w a market rich ppl are gonna exist and push boundaries and get greedy. as long as offsite trading and rlc items exist then ppl are gonna take advantage of that. 

i know they can't get rid of rlc options bc it funds the game dev. so leave that, whatever. but in my unpopular opinion i for real think offsite trading should've been banned from the start. the very first thing that set off inequality is letting folks transfer wealth from other places that had nothing to do w dv. you get an instant upper class like a few weeks into dv launch when everyone should've started on equal footing. but that's irrelevant now lmao.

also kinda funny to bring up neopets when they've steady got some of the same exact criticism. neopets is literally the original "petsite capitalism simulator" lol. yea yea they've been trying to stabilize more recently but still. there's just as much problem w rich fucks there as there is on dv. the difference is just it's less noticeable since neopets has so many other features to focus on, and a 20+ yr backlog of thousands of items at all levels of rarity/cost. while dv's inequality is at the forefrtont bc the place is so fucking barren that all ppl can really do on there rn is buy and sell shit. and then the shit you buy and sell is either completely worthless common trash items, or impossibly unattainably expensive w zero in between. there is no economic mobility on dv.

but neopets literally works in the same way. dv just *feels* worse bc it's not developed enough to have shiny bits that hide the flaws.

Honestly been really enjoying the Q2. For 250 it's a decent experience tracking wise, but gun play can be iffy at times when tracking cuts off as you bring your dominant hand up against your shoulder. Never happened enough to be an issue on the Rift S, in spite of its poor build quality. If I'm being honest, the LCDs still left a lot of color detail to be desired and I think they should have gone OLED like on the CV1 even if it meant a slightly lower resolution and a little more SDE. My eyes are above 20/20 so I get it either way. Big fan of better guardian system. My IPD is something really close to 63 so I don't get too motion sick too often, but it's honestly still unacceptable that I get it at all seeing as they easily could have just gone with digital IPD like on the Rift S or kept the physical slider like on the CV1 or Q2. 3 stage IPD leaves a lot to be desired for some people. If it were something like 5 stage or even 7 stage I think it would've made everyone happy. It still should've come with similar over ear audio to the CV1. The Rift S is still very much the most comfortable headset I've used. The default Q2 headstrap is just unacceptable. I know just get a seperate one but like. Vive could make controllers and they'd be a Quest killer no contest. A used Vive and some comfortable controllers that don't cost like 300 dollars? Like honestly.
