Any fav Soundtracks in sea of stars? The ambience Soundtracks are really ngl
I actually answered this in my side blog where I live-blogged Sea of Stars:
I fully recommend checking out the SoS tag there if you wanna read up approx. 65 bazillion posts where I analyze and gush over the game, though be mindful my side blog is an Adult Blog For Grown-Ups, so please curate and filter as needed (most of the SoS content there is sfw, but there's at least, maybe like two, risque fanart I posted up there.)
That said, I'll copy and paste what I wrote there here (with some editing):
youtube
"In the Womb of the Stars" is my defacto, most favorite song in the entire soundtrack. It is unsurprising that I picked a Yasunori Mitsuda vehicle (not that Eric W. Brown is a slouch!), it is incredibly ambient as you described. It's also ethereal, peaceful, hopeful, and conjures images of starry night skies so perfectly. I feel simultaneously content yet surrounded by mysteries I've yet to discover.
Other fave tracks...
The Great Archives: This actually wasn't in my original list. I liked the song a lot, but didn't know if it was one of those things I'd be listening to quite as much as the others on the list, but it grew on me more and more. Few could really make a theme song that genuinely sounds like "Old Wizard Lives and Smells Like a Library", but "The Great Archives" managed it very well.
Mooncradle: Particularly its night theme. The part where it sounds like it twinkles is a good first impression of the kind of whimsy this game excels at. Bardcore version of this was also good.
Dance of 1,000 Suns: Such a good title for Garl’s theme. It’s so bouncy and joyous, a perfect fit for the perfect boy.
Teaks, the Traveling Historian: The beginning kind of sounds like an ol’ West theme, though further listening, it’s pretty clearly meant to portray her mile-a-minute observational skills.
The Mole Masons: Especially its day theme. It’s just so upbeat and perky.
Serenade of Respite: This was my fave for the longest time until "In the Womb of the Stars." It's just so soothing. Legit feels like this was a leftover from Mitsuda's "Chrono Cross." That's how good it is.
The Storm Calls for You! Cheesy concertina aside (and maybe because of it), this boss theme is a BANGER.
Settlers Island: It sounds both like Christmas and Stardew Valley: very cozy.
The Town of Mirth: Cozy x10. Love how relaxing it is. Both day and night are great.
Monuments to the Ancients: Kinda feels like it’d make a good credits score, honestly. It has that same vibe I feel whenever I listen/see the credits to Super Mario Bros 2, actually.
Shoppe: I like the overall shop theme in SoS, but the Docarri one is the best. It’s the prettiest sounding one.
The Frozen Peak: Holy shit, this one is an EARWORM.
The Bamboo Forest: Incredibly serene. Just slap a screencap of that locale on YT for ten hours with that music, and add in some trickling water sound effects and BAM! You got an ASMR.
Volcano Pursuit: Also a banger. I don’t really gel with a lot of, like, lava-themed songs (y'all can’t ever top DKC 2’s “Red Hot Bop”), but this one is really, really fun.
Elegy of the Hero: Hi, I’m gonna get on my hands and knees and cry again, thanks.
Stars Align on the Assembly Line: Love it. Would rave to it.
Ascension: Godspeed, Solen and Luana…

Baby Shower Bliss: Enchanting Farmhouse Venues in Gurgaon
Excitement is in the air as the stork approaches! A baby shower is the ideal way to commemorate this significant milestone as you get ready to welcome the newest member of your family. There are several alternatives available in the energetic city of Gurgaon for holding this unique occasion. However, if you've always wanted a small-scale, enchanted party, think about the charm of farmhouse locations. Envision an idyllic scene with lots of vegetation, clean air, and peaceful bird sounds. This is the atmosphere Gurgaon's farmhouses provide, providing a welcome diversion from the hustle and bustle of the city. These retreats are perfect for baby showers since they offer a calm setting for family and friends to get together and make treasured memories.
Tumblr media
Why Choose a Farmhouse Venue for your Baby Shower?
• Distinctive and Calm Ambience: Veer away from the conventional banquet spaces. Farmhouses provide a distinct environment that is peaceful and lovely. A touch of nature, colorful plants, and fresh air all contribute to a serene and welcoming setting for your baby shower.
• Spaciousness and Flexibility: Farmhouses frequently include expansive terraces and lawns, which are ideal for setting up a cozy and adaptable area. Farmhouse settings are perfect for any kind of event, from large celebrations to more intimate get-togethers.
• Privacy and closeness: Farmhouses provide a feeling of privacy and closeness that is not found in busy restaurants or public areas. With decorations, you may make the area uniquely your own and provide your guests and yourself a really memorable experience.
• Optional Outdoor Activities: Although some farmhouses are geared toward parties, others may have extra features like playgrounds, swimming pools, or even little gardens where visitors can unwind or engage in mild outdoor activities.
• Catering Options: A lot of farmhouses work with caterers who specialize in creating cuisines for baby showers. This gives you the option to select from a wide range of cuisines, personalized desserts, and even themed food displays that go well with the overall theme of your baby shower.
Important Things to Think About When Selecting a Farmhouse Location:
• Guest List: It's important to think about how many people you plan to invite. While some farmhouses are more suitable for smaller, more private baby showers, others cater to larger groups.
• Budget: The cost of a farmhouse varies based on its size, amenities provided, and catering choices. Make a budget and select a location that works with your available funds.
• Accessibility: Take into account where the farmhouse is located and how easy it is for your visitors to get to. Select a location that has plenty of parking and is easily accessible.
• Amenities: List all the facilities you would want. For visitors coming from a distance, some farmhouses provide on-site lodging in addition to play spaces and swimming pools.
• Catering: Select a farmhouse that works with caterers that meet your requirements. Talk about your dietary needs, favorite cuisines, and any special catering requests you may have.
Planning Your Perfect Baby Shower at a Farmhouse:
• Dress it Up: Farmhouses provide an open canvas for themes for baby showers. Think about flowery beauty, charming woodland creatures, rustic appeal, or simply a certain color scheme.
• Adorn with Care: Cover the grass or patio with vibrant banners and fairy lights. To create a happy mood, add colorful signage, fresh flowers, and centerpieces with a baby theme.
• Comfort is Key: Make sure there are cozy seating options, outside areas are shaded, and gifts have a special place. To encourage interaction and fun between guests, think about putting up a little gaming area.
• Food & Drinks: Choose from a delicious assortment of light nibbles, finger appetizers, and refreshing beverages. To add a joyful touch, think of serving themed desserts or creating a customized cake for the baby shower.
• Entertainment and Activities: Arrange entertaining events such as games at the baby shower, prop-filled picture booths, or a DIY station where guests may make mementos. The atmosphere can be further improved by gentle background music.

okay i’ve played 9 hours of rain world so far i have no idea how far i am into the game bc it seems endless but here are my thoughts O_O
this game is awesome i got it for the graphics and atmosphere and boy they did not disappoint. the environments are SO COOL and i love all the ambience and the creatures are so freaking awesome and scary and cool. everything feels so organic like i can’t describe it any other way. those tall rabbit deer things are literally best design ever i’m obsessed with them btw
i usually stay away from notoriously hard platformers because that’s not my thing, i get frustrated real easily (i gave up on celeste after two levels LOL) but something about this game is so interesting and entrancing that i keep going even when i die over and over. it does get frustrating sometimes but my desire to see more of the world outweighs my frustration lol. i like how it has a real learning aspect to it, like with every new area you learn more about how the game works just through trial and error and gradually build an understanding of the mechanics and i think that’s really cool
tbh though the things i don’t like so far are that it can sometimes be unintuitive. like usually you eventually figure out what you have to do but sometimes it’s like…. how was i supposed to know that. like i could not figure out how to get past the evil grass in farm arrays, i figured i had to ride the deer/rabbit things but i could never get on them. eventually i had to look it up and there’s no way i would have ever thought to use the random sacks in the cave three rooms ago to feed them and then jump on their antlers. like how were you supposed to know that😭😭 but i think it’s really cool that you can ride them like the moment i realized that’s what you had to do i was like no freaking way. because one thing about me js i love riding cool creatures. anyway the other thing i don’t like is that some of the really hard parts are wayyyyy too far away from shelters. it is annoying when there’s a really hard area and you die over and over and every single time you die you have to travel so fucking far just to get there again. they’ve gotta either add more shelters or make the hardest areas closer to the existing ones LOL but that’s just because i get bored of going through the same areas over and over. but it’s not that bad bc like i said i persevere anyway because i want to see more of this incredible world
overall it’s an awesome game so far and i cannot wait to see more of it. i have no clue if there’s like an end goal or something like if i have to go somewhere or hit a certain number of cycles to end the game but i guess i’ll find out <3

Recently Completed: SIGNALIS (PC)
This is a retro-style survival horror game that reminded me at different points of Silent Hill, Alien, Neon Genesis Evangelion and HP Lovecraft (though thankfully not because of racism).
You play as Elster, a biomechanical robot lady on a mission to find someone important to you. To do so, Elster must descend into a mining facility overrun by some sort of fleshy plague, one that has turned the other biomechanicals into walking nightmares.
The sound, ambience, and atmosphere of the game are incredibly well done. The developers leaned into a PS1-style low-polygon aesthetic, and there are even options to enable screen curvature and a bit of visual noise to replicate playing on an old TV. Everything in the facility has a chunky, retro-tech feel, and there are a ton of little touches in the visuals and sound that add to the overall vibe.
(One of my personal standouts: in one area there's a set of doors connected to a huge vertical shaft, and the echoing boom that accompanies the door shutting behind you was a great detail and a treat on headphones)
The story is a bit opaque -- probably a little easier to parse if you're somebody good at connecting dots of lore scattered throughout a whole playthrough. ("Ah," this person might say to themselves, "This note pays off the storyline of a person mentioned in a crumpled page I found three hours ago! Wonderful!") That's...not really my strong suit, but I feel like I got the gist of it, and I came away with an interpretation of events that satisfied me.
Skimming comments on Steam, a big point of contention seems to be the extremely limited inventory. You're can carry up to six items at any given time, though certain items, like ammunition, stack within an inventory slot. (There's even in-universe propaganda posters promoting the Rule of Six). I won't say it wasn't frustrating at times, but I respect the choice for the way it increases tension. You learn quickly to prioritize when and when not to fight, what your essential items are when moving from area to area, and that you cannot hoover up every single healing item and ammo box you come across. In my (limited) experience, this is key to the Survival Horror experience -- you should never feel completely safe!
Thankfully, there is also a stash-box for storing and retrieving nonessential things from any save area. They do not attempt to explain this in-universe, and I'm fine with it.
Anyway! I took a long time from start to finish on this game, but I enjoyed it and would easily recommend checking it out this Spooktober -- and beyond!!

Concerned About Your Child's Education? 5 Essential Things While Choosing The Best Schools In Gurugram
Good education is a fundamental right for children. Don’t you agree? As parents, it is hard to pick out a suitable school for your young and growing toddler. Can you rush the process? Definitely no! A school is like a building block, nurturing the skills and talents in children and preparing scholars for bright and promising careers. In other words, a school is an ideal second home, grooming and encouraging scholars to serve as talented change-makers. Enrolling your ward in just any school might weaken the fundamentals of primary learning. Hence, parents must take some time before choosing the right school for little ones. Of course, good schools in Gurgaon are countless in number. However, not every school offers a holistic international-standard pedagogy and a progressive learning environment to mentor young scholars.
Tumblr media
Wondering how to choose the right school for your toddler? To begin with, it is always worth considering a few crucial factors before settling upon your pick for the top school in Gurgaon.
Factors to consider before selecting the best school in Gurgaon
To begin with, it is critical to understand that your idea of the best school in Gurgaon is certainly different from another. Do your homework well and weigh all crucial factors before finalising the right school for your ward.
Check if a school is conducive to learning
A school is where a kid devotes 6–7 hours of his day. Don’t you wish to be sure that the space work wonders in fostering growth and skills in your little one? A school that offers a positive learning environment and is home to the most supportive teachers is undeniably the best for young scholars. The mentors ingrain deep value in students and boost knowledge and a love for learning in young brains.
2. Distance matters
Would you really want your child to travel a long distance every day? Too much travelling makes young kids cranky and exhausted. Hours of going to and fro could set back your child’s eagerness and enthusiasm for studies. Besides, it will wear out the little ones, keeping kids away from fun and play.
3. The credibility of the faculty in schools
A proficient and able faculty is at the core of a good school. It is the staff and teachers that inspire, empower, and improve academic performance and personality development in children. Hence, when shortlisting the top school in Haryana, always enquire and find out about the qualifications and experience of the faculty first. Entrusting the development and academic career of kids to inexperienced hands could throw off a child’s upbringing and foundation by leaps and bounds. Therefore, it is wise to keep tabs on the experience and know-how of a school management body before enrolling young kids in schools.
4. Extra-curricular activities
It is no surprise that the ambience and experience a child receives in school stays with them for the rest of their life. So, it is only obvious that the importance of selecting the top school in Gurgaon matters big on the pedagogy and curriculum practised. A strong academic curriculum is certainly good. However, extra-curricular activities play a great role in shaping the overall abilities of young scholars. Do you know that activities double the learning capacity in children? So, always check if the school allows games, sports, drama, art and craft, hobbies, meditation, and other activities in addition to a strong academic module.
Speaking of the importance of combining strong academics with fun extracurricular activities, one of the popular and good schools in Gurgaon is Alpine Convent School. The international school leaves no stone unturned to add an extra edge to a scholar’s intellectual and creative abilities.
5. Keeps tabs on the measures of hygiene and cleanliness maintained
The list of factors when choosing the best school in Gurgaon is certainly incomplete without the mention of cleanliness and hygiene. Do you realise that hygiene is a top priority? Always ask if the outdoor play areas, toys, and classrooms are thoroughly wiped clean and sanitised. Also, post the pandemic, maintaining a high benchmark of cleanliness has become more important than ever. Enquire if the medical equipment in the infirmary for kids is sanitised and spic and span.
These factors are unquestionably quintessential when selecting the best school in Gurgaon. End your search for the best international school in Gurgaon with Alpine Convent School. Enquire today!

#IN SOUND MIND STORY PROFESSIONAL#
Performance-wise, the game rarely skipped a beat, running smoothly with extremely rare frame drops and one instance of freezing due to the player (me) being an absolute dingus by setting off as many explosions on screen at once just to see what would happen. In Sound Mind is not always visually impressive. The atmospheric music is done fairly well but is so frequently shifting on a dime with the bosses and enemies interrupting that it never lasts long enough to trick your brain into believing there’s something behind you. Having battle music start every time Inkblot enemies roll on up shatters any built-up atmosphere. The music and ambience are a real hit or miss situation though. It all adds to the mind-bending abstraction that is powerfully ramped up in some sections, putting you on an uneasy footing in memories that can only be described as…a bit cooked. There’s some really evocative imagery on display too, like cameras and eyes following you in the supermarket or the ear-crunching distortion of the poisoned lighthouse’s light bathing the dour cliffs in a malevolent red. What’s on the tape here feels, looks and sounds somewhat inspired by Fractional Games’ work on Penumbra: Overture blended lightly with Psychonauts. Being locked into peeping behind you to illuminate hidden objects and wires creates this wonderful sense of uneasiness every time you’re forced to use it. The mirror shard is definitely the stand out mechanic. There’s this giddy thrill of excitement at the prospect of taking tools like the flare gun or the lure pill back to the hub and using them to unlock new areas. Every map, and the hub world, is filled with a fun variety of puzzles that differ and evolve on top of each other with each proceeding tape, tucking rewards into obscure locations for you to find. Like an addict at a nightclub, tracking down pills to boost your stats and new weapons are the carrots on the stick. Metroidvania would be the best way to describe the overall gameplay, and We Create Stuff effectively demonstrates a competent understanding of the relationship between ability unlocks used for puzzles, backtracking and the subsequent rewards that comes from combining the two ideas. Surprisingly, what it isn’t lacking is a great sense of exploration and puzzle integration. The sense of danger however, is elevated by the combat being a little janky, so as not to make you feel like a super-soldier, with dodging enemies and aiming feeling off but not so busted it’s frustrating The emerging patterns in the scares, an inconsistent atmosphere as well as a robust safety net of guns (a pistol, shotgun and flare gun to name some of them) defanged any sense of fear or clear and present danger. Anyway, travelling into the third and fourth stories I felt the horror effect slowly fall off. Let’s just say mannequins in dark rooms should be considered a war crime and I’ll be seeing you in The Hague, We Create Stuff. Were there times where I was unsettled? Certainly, particularly within the first two tapes. In my twelve-hour journey I was never once filled with the absolute dread that typically stun locks me into quitting. It’s easy to assert In Sound Mind as a psychological horror game, though in all honesty, its application of the genre is mild at best. It’s affecting, particularly when all the pieces fall into place, both for the individual stories and the larger one at play. Small notes along with the persistent taunting of Agent Rainbow help you piece together your patients’ complete stories, in a way that has you understand that their anguish (and all mental health issues, for that matter) should be treated with empathy and compassion. Collectively though, these disparate narratives build In Sound Mind as a window into our ever-frail human psyches. It creates this soft bed for the character stories that deal with loneliness, anxiety, anger management, and PTSD. The way these subplots come together is a decent mystery and hook for the overall story.
#IN SOUND MIND STORY PROFESSIONAL#
This somewhat familiar premise for a game is accompanied by a veiled plot regarding your patients’ conditions, their relationship to this mysterious chemical and the identity of the enigmatic (and professional jump-scarer) Agent Rainbow. When a curious chemical makes its way into the small town, four of your patients succumb to their mental health crises and you must delve into their memories channelled through tape recordings to help them move on. As the resident psychologist of Milton Haven, you, Desmond Wales, have dedicated your days tending to the troubles of four individuals.

#SCORCH TORCH WEBSITE PLUS#
It’s important to note that some of the tracks (like Grassland Groove) loop a certain way until you reach a latter part of the stage, where the music will shift into new, fresh ideas. Īnother great new track is “Scorch n’ Torch,” which is very much Phil Collins. It’s separated by an initial ground level where it plays an awesomely synthy track that’s sort of like a Stickerbrush Symphony 2, while “Alpine Incline – Mountain” (the track that closed out the show) is the track that plays when you get on a hot-air balloon in that same level. You guys actually played the second half of the Alpine Incline level’s music. I would also like to add “Alpine Incline – Ground” as one of the best tracks in the game. Like Brett said, it just really puts you in a good mood. It has a great, joyfully bluegrassy feel to it with an exceptional use of the harmonica. I have a friend who was also reviewing the game like I was and both of us kept talking about how great this tune is. I’d throw many bananas at that.Īnd you guys even picked most of my favorite tunes, like Alpine Incline – Mountain, Grassland Groove, Big Top Bop and Windmill Hills. Seriously needs an official CD release like WHOA. Tropical Freeze is my favorite VGM OST of this year as well, followed closely by Shovel Knight. Haha YES!! I now totally get why you didn’t mention Tropical Freeze on the 2014 roundup ep. Thanks for listening, and hopefully you enjoy this extra special episode!
#SCORCH TORCH WEBSITE PLUS#
It’s a great way to catch up in case you haven’t listened to any of the OSTs ever / in a while, plus it’s just a great episode – we’re all on fire and have some great jabs at each other :3 An amazing piece of work and one I can’t recommend enough.Īnd FWIW we covered the SNES games back in episode 47. PLUS plenty of classic DKC jams get spiffy remixes, such as Aquatic Ambience, Stickerbrush Symphony and Fear Factory. Harmonizing chants? Somehow, yes! It’s all present and done exceedingly well. To me it represents the best of modern game music (great samples, great live instruments, ambient when appropriate), classic VGM values (super melodic and listenable, stuck-in-your-headiness) and works as a great example of how talented game composers need to be to fill out a massive soundtrack. But at the end of the year, it was DKCTF that remained. Destiny has immense financial backing and a great pedigree working on the tunes. Smash Bros was a formidable soundtrack destined to please just about all who hear it. Discuss!Īs you may have heard in the Year in Review episode, there was some stiff competition in 2014. Its varied set list, consistent quality and overall VGM-ness makes it the best video game soundtrack of the year. Our first ever Album of the Year award goes to David Wise’s stunning Tropical Freeze OST.

One thing I noticed about stray is how, as you climb the four key levels with robots living there, each new level has better and better overall conditions/quality of life, but less and less heart and soul, I guess?
Major spoilers below! (Like seriously don’t read if you haven’t played and finished the game)
(I’ll be using they/them pronouns for all robot characters unless I can specifically recall the game using otherwise, such as with Seamus and Clementine.)
You first meet the companion robots in the Slums, and it’s sad and dark and literally trash in many places. Everything is scraped together with the refuse from above that was tossed into their home; the place is literally the dumpster for Midtown, but the robots are full of life despite everything!
There’s a soul to them!
A lone guitar player makes music just to add ambience, one robot takes it upon themself to tend the plants that grow in a few sparse places, two other robots toss buckets of paint over the rooftop just for fun, a trader barters for things you can just find! A grandma knits ponchos for the cold robots. A son follows his father’s footsteps to find him after probably years thinking he was dead!
A Guardian protects their people and stands alone against a potential threat, one that initially they believe to be one that could destroy them!!! Like they fully thought that we (the cat) were a Zurk! And they still closed the elevator door and stood against us, ready to die to defend the people of the Slums.
And, may I remind you, these are robots! Robots who, based on the graffiti and dialogue and items, think fondly of humans and miss them and aspire to match their life. These robots want the humanity they already embody in the game, and  their human predecessors; they call humans the Soft ones, and remember us with love.
Here, in this darkest, saddest place, the furthest from the lights of the roof and surrounded by enemies, the Outsiders were born. They dreamed of what many called impossible; seeing the sun.
So you follow their steps, eventually reaching Antvillage, and here the robots have a sort of peace. They don’t have the constant fear the robots in the Slums did, these robots don’t fall over themselves in terror like them, but rather greet you with a bow and invite you in. Light shines down in a way reminiscent of the sun, and plants grow around the tower that you climb to meet the Outsider there.
I don’t know if the Antvillage has less soul than the Slums, but rather it’s the neutral transition point. The peace it has lets the robots enjoy a calm before the storm; they are taught by the outsider Clementine in a school-like environment, there seem to be children robots here! Seamus, a robot in the slums, gave the impression of a young adult, but the Antvillage feels like it has robots of all ages. They play mahjong, paint the walls of their tower home, grow plants and adore the different colors of them, and meditate to “ascend”.
Antvillage showed a peaceful coexistence of robots with personality and life, and furthermore showed that this peace would continue even with improved conditions. It wasn’t just the darkness of the Slums that led to the robots’ souls, but the bots themselves! This chapter was really a “people have always been people” moment for me.
This chapter is also very short. You meet the Outsider there, do a few side quests if you want, and then climb up and leave. You could argue that the Sewer is why the Antvillage chapter was so short, but I have other ideas. Still, I was confused at how quickly I made it through the Antvillage, even being a completionist, but I’ll come back to this.
Above, you arrive at Midtown.
Midtown is an urban nightlife styled area crawling with oppressive guards, and its residents are largely selfish or alone. Companionship is found in a few rare, quiet places, and it feels like a thing that the robots have to hide.
In this chapter, you are largely tricking the robots to get what you need, or hiding from cameras, or running from guards, and when you do finally find an ally, she swings a lamp at you at first! Because she thought you were one of the guards!
This environment fuels fear, pain, and loneliness, and you see it in so many of the robots there. It’s the kind of place that needs bars and night clubs, not to mimic humans with fondness, but as genuine escapes from the reality they live in. You have to wake up one drunk robot in a bar to force him to go do his job.
Robots bar you from places left and right, not with accidental garbage or closed doors you can circumvent with open windows, but with nightclub bouncers and harsh words and anger. They don’t want you in their places, because you are not greeted as a friend, but rather seen as another stranger that hopefully won’t be a problem to you.
An early robot you meet in Midtown is being searched by a guard, and when you speak with the stopped robot, they ask you to leave them alone. These robots don’t want your help, and they don’t really care that you’re there. All they want to do is mind their own business, and make sure you mind yours.
I would say Midtown is a reflection of the more unfortunate reality of late-world humans, rather than the fond imagination the Slums have of them. It’s steeped in capitalism’s effects, and the corruption and suffering that comes with it. The Sentinels that roam the place are described as “designed to keep peace, but grew to per
However, as with life today, there are rays of hope in places. A band of musicians refuses to bow to the guards that would stop them from enjoying their music; the dancers in the club enjoy life, despite the fear they live in. The bar in the area has a back room with a small plant in the center of the table, and the walls around it are covered in pictures of sunny beaches and outdoors from a better time. One cowboy robot enjoys a cat sitting on their lap while they both take a catnap. im sorry
Its fitting that the Outsider in this section is a fugitive; Clementine is relentlessly brave, determined, and resilient, and the Sentinels do not like that. She hides alone, until you come along and reignite her fight for the Outside. If you show Clementine’s picture to robots around Midtown, many of them feign they don’t know her, but “she probably lives in residence”. Even though they won’t openly pledge support to her and her cause, the game implies that they’re rooting for her and aren’t going to sell her out to the Sentinels.
Which makes Blazer’s betrayal a slap in the face.
Blazer is the ultimate show of greed behind a pleasant face, of the person who caves into the worst of choices in an environment like this where there aren’t many good choices. His betrayal leaves you, Clementine, and B-12 locked up, powerless, and back in a dark environment reminiscent of the earlier parts of the game.
This part of the game hurt me more than the Slums and scared me more than the Zurk chases.
Robots in the jail are locked up, alone, in cells, with no people around; the guards are all the drone bots, not even the more cold-hearted and soulless Sentinels bots. The first one you see after breaking free from your cage is tied down in a chair, their head broken from its shell, and they’re sparking off as if being electrocuted.
The jail is a nightmare of loneliness, pain, and hopelessness. It spits in the face of the humanity the Companion Bots had built in the game up until now, saying the cruelty of the world will still exist, despite your kind acts and the love you’ve seen in the robots before now. It holds the darker parts of humanity; the consequences of selfishness, the callousness of those who harden themselves to survive a cruel world. It’s the part of the game that most asks you to give up.
But, you don’t, because this is a video game, and if you’re like me, you’ve joined the hopeful fight for the sun that the Outsiders pledge themselves too, and you’ll be damned if you don’t let these people see the sun.
Clementine has other ideas, though. When you reach the gate to the subway, she closes the door behind you. Clementine tells you that the Outside pledge doesn’t require everyone gets to the Outside;
“Its not that everyone has to get to the Outside. But one of us has to.”
She gives herself up to give you a chance to see the sun again, and promises to keep you in her memory. As tragic as this was, it was the reminder I needed to continue in the game, to keep fighting for all the robots that helped me get this far. The darkness of Midtown didn’t matter anymore in that moment; what mattered was one robot had enough soul and heart in them to keep fighting through it all.
The Control Room was where this entire post’s idea first came to me as I ran around the too-clean halls and spoke to every robot there.
These bots have no names, no clothes, and repeat overlapping phrases. They do not have the life of the robots you’ve seen up until now; even the Sentinels seemed more like people than these automatons. The orange Helper Bots ask what they can do for you, and paint the walls, and clean the windows, and wipe the floors, and keep the entire place spotless and perfect and empty.
The only real sign of humanity in this area are the newspapers on some of the tables and the occasional coffee mug. Otherwise, the Control Room feels like a freshly built home, decorated with placeholder furniture to tempt a buyer. It has the technical ingredients for a home, but it’s empty and lifeless in a way that’s frightening compared to what you saw up until now.
Helper Bots never grew a soul like those below. I don’t know why I assumed all robots would have; a sign in the Slums says “it’s been X days since robots gained souls,” so I guess I assumed all robots got their souls at once, together, in a collective enlightenment. These robots prove that to be incorrect; the soul the Companion robots have was not a random chance or miracle.
Exposed to human art and books and music, and human trash and man-made monstrous bacteria and darkness, the robots below grew their souls. It was something they cultivated and then reveled in. To live and love and suffer and exist was a gift to them.
The Helper Bots, alone and in an immaculately clean environment devoid of human works, never got there. They never grew. In the Slums, a mural describes the sun and how it helped humans grow, and it was warm and bright. The Slum robots have never seen it, so they can only assume this to be true from art, but many doubt its existence. They live for hundreds upon hundreds of years in darkness and garbage, and they love each other.
In the Control Room, Helper Bots live in sterile, plush conditions just meters below the surface and the sun, and they never learned to live or love.
If you ask me, I think the Slum Bots were the lucky ones.

Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee
Tumblr media
I absolutely adored this game as a child. I mean, I was bordeline obsessed with it. I drew fanart, wrote fanfiction once I learned that was a thing, tried making my own jewelry, made my own original characters, hung out on the forums, the whole nine yards. One of the reasons why I learned English so quickly was because I struggled through trying to read and write fanfiction in English. My first attempt was probably barely even coherent, but I tried. There was just something about the vibe of this game that really captured me and it never really let go.
I think something that adds to this vibe of the game is the fact that the worldbuilding of Oddworld is never really explained. They don't try to go into details of what Sligs are, or how Mudokons came to be enslaved, or draw any maps. There are no huge codexes to read or pieces of lore to gather. It just goes like "hey, here's a guy with a big face, his name is Big Face and he's here to do big face stuff, ok bye". I honestly think that's a great way to present a new world to the player.
One of my favourite areas of the game is the stockyard. I think it's just the darkness and violence in the foreground contrasted against the sometimes absolutely breathtaking night sky in the background, coupled with the soft ambience that just gives it a kind of otherworldly vibe. Like it's meant to be a temple, or a place of relaxation, but it's just full of mines and armed guards now. I could spend a lot of time just hanging around in the safer areas to really take in the sight of it.
This was the first time I tried using gouache, and it does not act the way I thought it would. I thought it would be a lot more like water colours, and it is definitely not. That's why I kind of messed up my sketch and lost some of the feel of where I was going with this. And why the scrab's legs are a bit messed up. But I'm fairly pleased with it overall, I think the sky could have been a bit darker, but otherwise I think it turned out fine for a first attempt.

Shadow of the Colossus is an action-adventure game that plays more like a puzzle boss fighter. This story is about Wander and his horse Agro on their journey to save a girl named Mono. In his attempt to revive her, Wander makes a deal with the entity named Dormin to slay all sixteen colossi in the forbidden land. By defeating each Colossi, Wander gets one step closer to completing the ritual which will allow for the resurrection of Mono. With almost no more information than this, Wander is thrust out into the forbidden land on his hunt for the first Colossus armed only with his horse, bow, and sword.
I played Shadow of the Colossus months ago for the first time but wanted to revisit it as for the month of March it is free to download with a PS Plus membership. I never played the original on PS2, so I did not have any nostalgia to influence my playthrough. Before I get into more detail, I want to say that this is an amazing game that you should try out while it is free, but it will not for everyone.
Shadow of the Colossus blew me away with how beautiful the landscape is despite its loneliness. Unlike most action-adventures, there are no towns, dungeons, or really anything to explore. Despite this, I was enthralled just riding Agro around seeing the different environments and the imposing Colossi from a distance. Although I would have liked more story and a more filled world, the reality is that the emptiness of it all adds to the mystery and loneliness of Wander’s seemingly insurmountable task. The colossi he faces range from humanoid to animalistic features from air, land, and sea. One common thing they share is that they are all massive compared to Wander. I view this as more of a puzzle game as the main gameplay loop is to figure out how to climb on to these Colossi made of stone and rock. After climbing to certain locations, Wander can attack critical points that are made of organic matter until eventually landing the final blow on the head of each colossi. Simple enough concept, but each Colossus offers a different challenge of attack patterns, and puzzle of how to climb to their weak points. These fights are magnificent in scale and further show the beauty of the artistic design of the game. Shadow of the Colossus also offers a photo mode which easily allows for some great wallpaper for any images you take of the environments and colossi. To further add to the ambience of the game, the fully orchestrated soundtrack pairs perfectly with the tone of each environment and colossus fight. I have been listening to the soundtrack again while writing this, and highly recommend you go and take a listen even if you don’t play the game.
This title is definitely worthy of its praise as one of the best PlayStation games ever created, but it does have its flaws. The camera angles can get a bit hard to manage during some boss fights and the controls are not the best compared to modern titles. The lack of a filled world adds to the overall mood of the game, but I really disliked having such a minimalistic story. With this remaster it would have been a great addition to add short cutscenes or unlockable lore for each colossi to understand them more. Finally, although I enjoyed the main gameplay loop the reality is this game will not be fun for many people. Once the method of climbing onto a colossus is discovered, the game is really just a climbing simulator while avoiding being shaken off. There is a thrill in discovering the pattern while avoiding attacks from a colossus, but then it just becomes monotonous climbing. Because of this, I highly recommend this title to those that love their games to be an artistic experience like Journey and say to those who aren’t to just give it a try. Not much to lose out on this title can be gotten for free this month. Shadow of the Colossus may not hit my top ten of all time as it will for others, but I give this amazing display of art an 85/100.

Boulder Bash postmortem
Quite a bit has been added since my last post. The game is now fully complete and includes a score counter for each time you destroy a ‘boulder’ as well as the boulders movement and procedural generation working. Moreover, I included more aesthetic textures to each of my objects to make the game seem more colourful and thus more appealing to the player.
Chapters 13 and 11 were the core concepts that I used to ultimately drive this project. Chapter 13 focuses on the development process in the games industry, and although I’m not working in a team with a budget and marketing, the core principles still applies.
Tumblr media
I used this structure of a production pipeline to accurately and efficiently plan out and create the game. The concept phase was vital and helped me come up with the core movement idea (although heavily inspired by the workshops).
If I had to redevelop the game I would probably change the core movement. Although, quite unique, (in which the ship is floating through space while spinning and the user clicks with the mouse when they want to activate the boost). It lacks enjoyment and rethinking this idea would benefit the pace and overall gameplay.
If I had to redesign this game, there would definitely need to be sound effects and a music track. Within popular space shooters, music and especially sound effects are what set the tone of the game and can really make or break the game. Stars in the background would also be introduced to add more ambience to the space theme. Lastly particles would be added to the rocket ship each time the player decides to boost, this provides feel for the power of the boost and makes the player feel in control.
Final game look:

The world got very excited about convolution reverbs for a couple of years, but it seems that more traditional algorithmic designs are making a comeback. After all, convolution processors are still pretty CPU-hungry, so in situations where you want three or four reverbs in a mix, they can be impractical. Moreover, they don't tend to offer as much flexibility as their older brethren, and although they provide unsurpassed realism, it turns out that real doesn't always mean better, at least in your average pop mix.

The latest entry in the retro reverb stakes comes from Nomad Factory, whose Blueverb DRV2080 is allegedly 'intended to recreate the warm qualities of vintage-style digital reverbs from the '80s'. And this is pretty much exactly what it does. It's not the sort of plug-in that offers endless potential for tinkering; instead, it provides just a few basic controls, enabling you to get a sound fast, without crippling your PC in the process. Control over the reverb itself is limited to seven familiar parameters, all of which do pretty much what you'd expect, and the output can be shaped by a simple two-band EQ.
It's the sound that counts, and to my ears, DRV2080 does a decent job. Although there appears to be only one reverb algorithm, it's flexible enough to deliver smooth long halls and some fairly recognisable plates, as well as more subtle ambiences. None of them is exactly convincing as an emulation of a real acoustic space, but they can work very well on vocals and other sources within a mix. I particularly liked the plate presets, though I found that their usefulness on vocals was limited by a strong tendency to exaggerate sibilants, which the basic two-band EQ didn't really help with. Overall, however, this is a surprisingly versatile plug-in with a likeable, rich sound that's a lot more dense than that of many algorithmic reverbs. CPU load is minimal, and if you're looking for something that will provide an affordable step up from the reverbs bundled with DAWs like Cubase or Pro Tools, this is well worth considering. Kjaerhus Audio MPL1 Pro
Formats: PC VST
There are quite a lot of high-quality mastering limiters around these days, and it seems that if you want to stand out from the crowd, you have to offer something a bit out of the ordinary. Thus, Sony's Oxford Limiter has its unique Enhance function, while Waves have developed the clever multi-band technology used in their L3.
At first glance, Kjaerhus Audio's MPL1 seems to lack a comparable USP, but closer inspection reveals some very interesting and innovative design features. It's a wide-band, stereo plug-in, and offers all the luxuries you'd expect from a high-end limiter. It uses a look-ahead algorithm and oversamples the incoming audio, enabling it to detect and limit inter-sample peaks. There's excellent level metering, which displays both peak and RMS output levels, and the Pro version includes some helpful additions, such as an input gain control (I know we should all be paying more attention to gain structure in our DAW mixes, but sometimes it's just easier to attenuate the gain on the master channel than to bring every track in your mix down by 3dB!). In terms of the features on offer, the only thing that might be a negative point for some is the relative lack of output dithering options. It's TPDF noise shaping or nothing; I confess I'm unlikely to lose any sleep over that, but the golden-eared might.
So what makes MPL1 special? Two things, as far as I can see. The first is its unusually flexible and musically sympathetic way of setting the limiter release times. There's a manual Release control, but you can also introduce a programme dependent release algorithm. If you do so, the Release control then sets a maximum release time for the programme dependent algorithm, so you can combine the benefits of programme dependent release with the control of a manual system. This isn't so unusual in its own right, but the Pro version goes further. An additional PDR Amount control allows you to introduce a variable amount of programme dependence into the release, while a PDR Time parameter modifies 'the time factor used to identify peaks in the music', and you can also adjust Compression Smoothing, which controls the shape of the transition between hard limiting and the release phase.
The second out of the ordinary feature is, as far as I know, unique to the Pro edition of MPL1, and Kjaerhus say they've applied for a patent to protect it. We're used to being told that stereo linking is essential when using any dynamics process across a stereo mix, in order to prevent the image from wandering, but MPL1 's design challenges this dogma. The idea seems to be that when limiting is triggered by transient peaks in one channel, the audible side-effects of reducing gain in both channels can be noticeable, but that within a short enough time-frame, the disturbance to the stereo image is not. So, what MPL1 Pro allows you to do is, in effect, to set an attack time for stereo linking. This can be varied from 0 to 100 milliseconds. At the former extreme, MPL1 Pro behaves like any other limiter. At the latter, the level in the left channel would need to exceed the threshold for a tenth of a second before limiting in the right channel is triggered.
You’ll be able to race everything from front wheel drive subcompacts to roaring ’60s era muscle cars by the time you’re done, with a few supercar exotics thrown in for good measure. As you impress the locals, you’ll build your own racing gang or team; each additional character actually races along side you and can help you out in a pinch. Wins also net you cash, which you can turn over into seemingly endless varieties of car customization or new vehicles that you’ll be able to unlock as your influence and your list of winning races increases. And of course, there’s straight-up slaloms through busy city streets with a pack of opponents on your tail (or in front of you, depending on how good you are). Each race you win will earn prestige, not only for you but for your little racing club and its control of territory. https://blogvan883.tumblr.com/post/652771639720886272/download-need-for-speed-carbon-for-mac.
As you'd expect, higher attack times for stereo linking can tend to make the stereo image unstable, but used with moderation, I think the results bear out the designers' reasoning: momentary limiting in one channel only didn't disrupt overall imaging, even on headphones. That said, on my test material the benefits were pretty subtle — rather more so, for instance, than those of the Enhance function in Sony's Oxford Limiter. Likewise, the effect of the Smooth control is often hard to notice, though in most respects, the flexible release settings provide clear benefits. In general, MPL1 performs flawlessly, and it's one of the most flexible wide-band mastering limiters I've used. At barely $100 for the basic version and under $150 for the Pro version, it's also excellent value for money. Sam Inglis

Voxengo Marquis
Format: PC VST
Tumblr media
The basic EQs, compressors and effects included in your average DAW program can do a yeoman job, but they often lack flavour while they are doing it. So if you yearn for more upscale effects, but the cash (or credit) is lacking, you could do worse than checking out Voxengo's range. Their Marquis compressor is a step up from the native compressors I've dealt with, even the higher-end versions such as Sonar 's Sonitus Compressor. Voxengo call it a universal compressor since it can be used on individual tracks during mixing, on a buss or, in a pinch, pressed into service as a mastering plug-in. Preset management follows the VST standard, while the right-hand side of the compressor looks and acts like most others, with knobs for Threshold, Ratio, Knee, Attack and Release.
Things get interesting, or at least complex, with the more unusual controls. These include Force, which mixes in a compressed signal with zero release time, and Dry, which allows you to mix the uncompressed signal with the compressed signal to achieve 'parallel' compression. There are also a number of ways to modify the detection and compression algorithms. For instance, the former can be switched between Classic and Round modes, while the plug-in can emulate both a conventional 'feed-forward' design and an optical compressor circuit. You can choose from three different attack and release behaviours, while optional Soft and Sharp modes introduce different varieties of harmonic coloration. You can also engage a phase-linear mode for mastering and other sensitive applications. Switching any single button won't always have a dramatic effect on the sound, but in combination, they are sure to.
Another nice feature is side-chain filtering, with a spectrum analyser to view the results and the ability to listen to the filtered side-chain signal. You can click and drag four breakpoints on a graphical EQ curve, with the Shift, Ctrl and Alt keys providing variable control over the dragging.
Finally, not only does Marquis offer a programme dependent release option, but it allows you to edit the programme dependent 'release contour' in detail. In programme dependent mode, the release time you set manually is treated as a minimum, and the 'release contour' provides three knobs for altering the amount by which the programme-dependence can extend that release time. Raising the values produces a steeper slope, meaning less variation in the release time, while lowering the number straightens the green line to the horizontal, permitting more variation (and hence, on average, a longer release time).
The detailed editing available means that tweakheads can burn up lots of time trying to emulate the sound of their favourite hardware compressors, but for those who want to adjust and move on, there are enough presets and big-picture sculpting tools to get on to the next project quickly. Although Marquis can sound transparent, it can do 'vintage', too, without breaking into a sweat. The drum buss collection provides good starting points, and any preset with 'movement' in the name does just that. They can turn your mild-mannered loop into a seething, pumping thing. Of course, you don't have to mangle sound, and it is easy to add a little glue, sparkle or bass to individual tracks or entire mixes. It is easier to hear it working (in a good way!) than most native DAW compressors, since it doesn't sound like it is straining to affect the sound. Despite its complexity, Marquis manages to stay CPU-friendly, too. This is a plug-in that covers a lot of sonic ground, yet is fairly inexpensive for the quality it provides. Alan Tubbs

Chandler EMI TG12413
Formats: Mac & PC TDM & RTAS
Tumblr media
The best-known studios of the '60s and '70s all had their own, identifiable sound, and none more so than Abbey Road. Lots of factors contributed to the unique sonic fingerprint of EMI's in-house studio, from its engineering practices to the shape of the recording rooms and their lush reverb chambers. Among those factors were the numerous pieces of equipment that were custom-built or extensively modified by EMI staff, and of those, the TG-series desks introduced in the late '60s hold pride of place.
Chandler already make hardware compressors, limiters, preamps and channel strips based on the TG-series design, but TG12413 is their first plug-in. Available for Pro Tools LE and TDM on Mac and PC, it emulates the compressor/limiter built into every channel on the TG-series mixers. It's authorised to an iLok key, and installed by the slightly clunky but effective method of copying two DPM-format files into your Pro Tools plug-ins folder.
One glance at the interface tells you that controllability isn't the prime reason for this plug-in's existence. There are only four controls, all of which are stepped and can be moved either by clicking and dragging, or simply by clicking the appropriate number on the scale. The most basic control is a switch that sets whether the plug-in should act as a compressor or a limiter. These modes have fixed attack times of 44 and eight milliseconds respectively, while release time is adjustable using a six-position Recovery switch. In limiter mode, the fastest release available is 50ms and the slowest two seconds, and switching to compressor mode scales these up by about five times.
As is the case in many vintage dynamics processors, there's no Threshold setting. To get more compression, you simply up the input gain to drive the unit harder. On the original unit, the input gain control was rather unconventional and not especially intuitive, and sensibly, Chandler have provided two versions of the plug-in. One is faithful to the original, while the other has a conventional gain control. And, apart from an output gain control, that's it. A retro-style VU meter displays gain reduction: it's not the most helpful visual feedback, but this isn't the sort of processor you'd use in situations where you need absolute precision. Its raison d'être is to add character to your tracks, and boy, does it do that.
I can't ever recall testing a plug-in compressor that can match TG12413 for sheer punchiness. In compressor mode, it can pump like a nodding donkey in an oil field, but I found I used it more in limiter mode, where the snappier time constants seemed to work for almost everything. The attack is just slow enough to let transients through, so it can add substance to a drum track without losing the initial 'crack' of the snare. Alternatively, it can nail a vocal to the front of the mix without sucking the life from it. Buying TG12413 alone won't turn your mixes into Dark Side Of The Moon, but you may well experience moments when it really does seem to bring a little slice of Abbey Road into your life. Sam Inglis

Film Genre - ‘Saving Throws’ Self-Reflection
Tumblr media
‘Saving Throws’ was a screenplay idea I had had for a while. Dungeons & Dragons is something which means a lot to me as I used to play a lot with my mum and my friends, so I really wanted to make a film about it at some point. It just so happened that my idea was chosen for this film!
The writing process began by actually playing a small D&D game by myself, trying to figure out an idea as to what would happen within the film. My script originally had more action, at one-point Nara would attempt to cast a spell and fail. However, I realised that within the confines of the brief and pandemic, the simpler the on-screen action is, the easier it would be to film and edit; so, I cut this out. Another thing in my first few drafts was two separate locations. The second scene was meant to take place within a nerdy bedroom. I was also meant to have multiple fantasy characters, seen from a distance through the trees, being killed. However, both of these things also went against the brief, so were cut from the final script. Part of my process was to draw some character art, starting off with some doodles, then making a more detailed sketch. This let me envision the look of the character and costume.
Tumblr media
As producer and writer, I worked closely with Laura (the director) and Euan (the DoP) to ensure we would be able to pull-off this ambitious fantasy film. Both of them were super invested, constantly messaging me to ask questions about D&D to make sure they were creating a plan that would be true to the game. The three of us also went on a couple location recces, practicing blocking and shot composition. They also let me give input on the shots I had envisioned whilst writing (which was very kind of them). I also made several logistical documents to ensure that everyone knew the plan for the shoot days.
Tumblr media
The shoot overall was a bit rushed, especially on the first day. We really wanted to get all of the first scene done as it is more complicated, and it requires prosthetic make-up and more costume.  This scene was to be shot during an overcast afternoon, then made darker in the colour grade to portray dusk. Consequently, this meant that we needed to shoot fast, and we lost light very fast. However, we managed to get all the Nara shots done, apart from 3. Fortunately, we did not need anything above the shoulder for these shots as they were all close-ups of feet, hands and running shots. The second day was harder in terms of set-up as we needed to carry a desk, chair, and lighting into the woods. We also had a lot more time for shooting as the second scene was to be shot at dusk so that there is little light. But we managed! Despite the November frost which blew in at 7pm, I survived!!
Tumblr media
When it came to the edit, Euan (the absolute champ) did all the hard work. However, I made sure that the rest of us contributed as much as possible to aid him in his work. Similarly to the sound project, I made a list of all the required sounds we needed to source, and assigned members of the group. Robyn and I sourced a lot of Orc-related sounds, like gorillas and dog barks that could be pitched in edit. I found various battle noises as well as sourced all the fantasy forest ambience. I also arranged for Peter, myself, Laura, and Euan to have a Zoom call to record his lines. Euan realised whilst editing that we were missing a crucial shot, where Nara runs back to the tree after stepping on a twig. He decided to let us know this at 11pm, which was not the kind of pre-sleeping message I needed because I did then end up staying awake all night in panic. However, Euan, the legend he is, managed to cobble together a bit more of an artistic, relational style editing. He interspliced shots of the woods with close-ups of Nara running. I think it works! I think that our mistake on set actually allowed us to be a lot more creative with the editing approach we took. Euan set up a Discord server where he could stream his screen, this allowed us to drop-in when we could to give feedback and watch the film develop throughout post-production. Unfortunately, Euan left the sound edit quite late, this meant we couldn’t have our usual group feedback. I think that if we had had more time, we could’ve developed the soundtrack more.
Tumblr media
Overall, I’m happy with how the film came out. I think that there are a couple of edits that are a bit clunky and jarring. This is the result of missing crucial shots whilst shooting, which could have been avoided if I wasn’t the actor. I do feel annoyed at myself over the acting, as I felt I could’ve given a better performance. However, it was Laura’s first time directing so I was also trying to produce and keep track of what we were filming to support her. I think, if Covid restrictions were less tight, we could’ve gotten an actor, that way I could have been more hands-on as a producer. Despite this, I do really like the more choppy, creative style of editing Euan went with. It helps with the runtime and creates a sense of disorientation that we all wanted. I think the sound design could definitely be improved. A key part of the narrative is the Orc, and I think there needs to be more growls and snarls added throughout the film to establish the beast that’s chasing Nara. I also think that the distant battle sounds needed to be louder to help the audience understand what Nara is hearing, as right now, it is pretty ambiguous. However, I really enjoyed what Euan managed to create, especially all by himself. Do not worry, I did reward him with a nice bottle of wine for all his hard work!
Tumblr media
I was so surprised by how the final crit went. I think it’s my awful brain telling me everyone will hate it that caused me so much anxiety before the crit. Everyone was so kind and constructive in their criticism, but the overall consensus was that ‘Saving Throws’ was pretty good. First off, the peer feedback. I want to especially note Peter’s comment about my commitment to the role by “dying the mullet”, thankyou peter for enabling my hair dye addiction. Many people got strong Twilight vibes from the colour grade and quick panning shots of Nara running. The other strong reference was Stranger Things from the red lighting and nerdy-coming-of-age narrative. These were both references we talked about as a group, so I’m glad they came through in the final film. A criticism which I want to work on, is that people felt there should be more sound design around the laptop, more voices of Lainey’s friends coming through throughout the conversation. I think this would make it more realistic and would make the reactions of the friends flow better in the scene. Quite hilariously, a debate happened between a few people in the class about costume. Some wanted more fantastical costume, like that of Lord of the Rings. Others liked the simplistic costume I cobbled together as they felt it made the transition from fantasy to real-world easier for the viewers. Personally, if I had had more time, I would’ve liked to make something a bit more fantastical (as seen in my more detailed sketch). I kind of got landed with all the production design last minute, so I threw together something which would work. However, if I ever revisit this idea, I would like to add more mythical costume elements.
Tumblr media
The feedback from Zoe and David was, as always, supportive and constructive. Zoe used the words “very enchanting”, which made me so relieved that we hit the mark on the fantasy genre. She had some great notes of sound design. She also felt that the distant battle sounds could’ve been pushed more, had more levels and different noises. She also suggested that we add bass notes to the soundtrack, in particular, during the battle scene, we should build this bass note, then cut it as the twig snaps. If we revisit the film, I definitely want to add more musical elements to help drive the narrative. David was super impressed with the many genres we managed to encompass in the film (he mentioned drama, comedy, fantasy and coming of age). He too wanted more sound effects, both the Orc sounds, the environment sounds, and battle sounds; but also the second scene, where he felt there should be more sound effects from the laptop call. He noted the jarring cut at 0:47ish, explaining that it is jarring due to the fact everything else is edited together so well, that it jumps out as wrong.
Tumblr media
From producing this film I have learned to manage my time better. I did manage my own time, but I realised that, as producer, I should be managing everyone else’s time on set better (I know I was acting on set so it was very difficult). I also think I should try not to take on as much work as I did this module, as even on this last film I producer, wrote, acted, location scouted, sound sourced and did all production design for this film, and I found I was extremely overwhelmed. Yet I still felt I wasn’t doing enough to help out Euan, so overall I was just a bit of a mess, and I feel this affected my group a lot in post-production. I also learnt a lot this term for working within the pandemic, which is a great experience to have (not a great experience in terms of a viral pandemic, but in terms of knowing how to work on and off set within the confines of this situation). I surprisingly enjoyed the strict constraints we had to work within, both the 3-page script and 3 minutes maximum, as it gave me the experience of being critical of my work to know what to cut. But it also allowed me to be more creative, as I wanted to tell a full story within these confines, and my group managed to do just that!
Tumblr media
I loved this module, as I was able to explore genre a lot more than I have been able to in the past. I like having genre as something to refer to whilst making a film, both in conventions but also breaking those conventions. I’ve found myself now writing some scripts in my spare time which came about through my exploration of genre this term.

I will also be posting a blog post with an updated edit that Euan intends to do.

Mutoid Man’s Pedals & Creative Process // Delicious Audio
Tumblr media Tumblr media
PC: Jammi York
Sludgy, frenetic, and surprisingly melodic, Mutoid Man serves up nasty, heavy jams with a side of skilled riffage. Their latest release, War Moans, is 12-tracks worth of head spinning metal aptitude, so of course, we here at the Deli were very curious as to what kind of gear went into making their signature gut-busting sound. – by Olivia Sisinni
What feelings, events, people, records, inspired your latest album War Moans?
Feelings of joy, persistence, happiness, and gleeful rage are all present on War Moans. We found lots of musical inspiration from our peers on the road last year, sharing the stage with Baroness, Gwar, Converge, etc… and of course, when Chelsea Wolfe and Marty Friedman are down to collab on your album, it’s hard not to be stoked.
youtube
Can you talk a bit about the themes that encompass this release?
The perversion of sex occupies our day-to-day in some shape or form, from product advertising to the the fact that any type of porn is accessible within seconds on our handheld devices. War Moansacknowledges this perversion and celebrates it having a home in the world of rock ‘n’ roll, continuing the tradition of this being a perfectly acceptable place for all forms of sexual expression.
Was there a person outside the band that had an important role in shaping your sound?
Kurt Ballou who recorded War Moans and also our previous album Bleeder is a good suck filter – we welcome his oftentimes blunt manner of guiding the production and occasional song writing, which usually leads to us doing better work.
Did you guys work on a new or improved guitar sound for this record, and, if so, what made everything click?
I played an Aria Pro II XX-MS 1985 Flying V with stock pick ups that I bought last year. It’s built for speed and really helps me wrangle the faster tempo stuff. We used the same amp on War Moans as we did with Bleeder – a Gibson Titan from the 60’s. This time we added more soundproofing foam in the live room to give the drum tracks greater isolation, and I think you can hear noticeable improvement in the overall mix.
How much of your distortion is amp and how much of it is pedals?
I like to dial in amp gain to the point of it sounding like speakers breaking up naturally, then I’ll add the external overdrive. If need be, I’ll push the amp gain harder when the floor needs extra shaking.
Tell us about your first time with… a guitar pedal. How old were you and what did you stomp on?
I started playing an acoustic guitar at age 12 and quickly became impatient to crank things up a notch with an electric. I remember driving with my folks to buy a used Rickenbacker practice amp… this thing was tiny and very basic but it didn’t matter – I was so excited to play through it, thinking “finally I’ll sound just like of all my favorite rock n roll and metal albums!” Of course when I plugged in, the sound was way cleaner than I’d hoped and the only way to get any gain was to pin every knob to 10 and strum the guitar as hard as possible – even then it provided soft gain at best. Several broken strings later, I’d managed to savesome paper route money and bought my first distortion pedal – the DOD American Metal, which I still own to this day. Game changer for sure! Recently I listened back to some cassette boombox recordings I’d made around that time and thought “This tone would be right at home on those early Hellhammer and Darkthrone albums”, both of which were way off my radar in 1993!
I still get nostalgic for the old Yamaha stereo Flanger pedal sound from the 80’s. It was the first “effect” pedal I owned and that was my way of exploring the feeling of how Nirvana used stereo chorus on “Nevermind”. Later on, I’d say discovering the Boss PS-3 was a major revelation, as it contains a particular setting which mirrors a distinct shimmery sound that’s existed deep in my musical imagination for several years. My band Cave In obviously exploited this sound to the degree in which Kurt Ballou now calls that pedal the “Caveinator” haha.
Tumblr media
What do you have on your pedalboard these days?
Pictured above is my basic set up for Mutoid Man. Yellow tape arrows indicate the [Boss PS-5] Super Shifter quick octave up for piercing eardrums and a slowdiving octave down for brown note central. There’s a reverse delay for mild trippy ambience, flanger, octave down laser-like sonic intensity mimicking some intergalactic bass playing alien phenom , a sampler pedal for when I get lonely as the lone guitar player in a band and want some loopy company, octave up for more sharp frequency violence upon unsuspecting eardrums, and a (sexual) organ simulator for me to launch into “take me out to the ballgame” at any given moment.
What’s your favorite pedal on your board right now?
The [Electro-Harmonix] B-9 is pretty great as it tracks one’s playing super well – it’s also a happy medium for all the years I’ve said how badly I wanna take piano lessons.
youtube
Are there any stompboxes you are itching to buy?
I’m looking to pick up an Eterna [a reverb from Mr. Black]. Also we used the Boss Vocoder all over War Moans to the point where it might actually be busted haha – I dig it so much that I’ll prolly buy a new one if that’s the case. Strymon is making some cool stuff. Also been getting back into messing around with envelope filter – I’m sure technology has come leaps and bounds since the DOD version from the early 90’s.
Are there any up-and-coming New York bands that you’re really excited about?
I think Sarahbeth from the band Tower has one of the most killer voices in the entire city.
