we got our teacher appreciation swag from the front office today and although I did not need more cups in my life, I do very much enjoy the "snacks" bag, the beach towel, and the very cute pen that I received. (I have already consumed several of the snacks to keep me going as I completed my schoolwork tonight, which took me way longer than it should have) we also got an ice cream bar at work today, which was just them rolling a cart to each room and offering the teachers an ice cream sandwich with choice of toppings, and yes, I got almost every single topping, including gummy worms, sprinkles, and caramel. it was delicious.

I called mom on the way home to update her about life, including Matt's job offer, Peggy's newest spot, and the tentative plan for visiting FL before I start my new job, and she told me about her dilemmas with the still-broken office AC, the desire to go get a drink before going to church league bowling but not wanting to go by herself (dad was taking Daisy for one of her laser treatments this afternoon so he may or may not have been able to join her), and the slight disappointment that the church league discourages drinking at bowling (although I did remind her that she can get around that by simply ordering a jack and coke in a regular glass, which it sounded like she was at least considering)

Peyton's kilt outfit came in today and although it took him a long time to get into, it looks damn good on him. the thing weighs at least 10lbs altogether though, so he will be sweating his ass off at the outdoor wedding at the end of May. Paige is sick (although not feverish, she checked her temp a few times) so we FFY'd for dinner tonight, meaning that I ate cheerios and snacks. oops. we finished Parks and Rec, which is part of the reason it took me forever to do the simple assignments I had, I simply had something better to pay attention to on the other screen. the order of the paper piecing hexagons and the catnip/silvervine blend came in so I plan to start working on Peggy's d12 toy tomorrow, although I need to get a non-toxic fabric marker to write the numbers on with. Peyton opened the cat drugs and all three of the cats were meowing at him after they realized what was going on, so he sprinkled some in the dining room and they had a good time with that.

Peyton and Paige went to bed an hour ago now, and after a good 30 minutes of dicking around I finally put in the last 10 minutes of effort it took to complete my work before rewarding myself with some ritz bits and beginning to type today's entry. I intended to read yesterday's Dracula Daily while the kids napped, did not do that thing, then intended to listen to it on the way home, also did not do that thing, but maybe I can start mixing it in with my listening of Night Vale on my way to work - my consumption of night vale has significantly slowed down in the last week or so, partially because I'm so close to catching up that I don't want to listen to two month's worth of episodes in a day anymore.

today I yearned for the mines, although it is not a good time to start another minecraft phase. May is too busy of a month for us to get sucked into staying awake until 1am on a work night exploring a cave system. maybe in June we can don our mining hats...

tomorrow I need to mow the lawn if it's dry enough when I get home, but I'm kind of hoping it isn't so I have an excuse to not do that thing. I really should get ahead on my coursework before the last two weeks of May hit since they are currently a train rapidly approaching on the horizon, and I will certainly endeavor to do that over my lunch breaks from now on, because today is a perfect example of what happens when my motivation is gone and my meds have worn off by 7pm

I still have almost 200 pages to read of Unseen Academicals before next week if I don't want to have to renew it, and I haven't been able to read to Peyton in a while, and I'm not sure where Sav is in the Hunger Games books rn so I'm sure I'm behind on that reread with her (but I have been enjoying the sotr stuff my dash has presented me with today, and I really want to ask Paige where she is in her read of it but she's already said she doesn't want to talk about it until she finishes it so I don't want to push).

Matt's wedding will have exactly 69 attendees (including himself and his bride) and even though we are all adults in our late 20s, that just seems like an ideal number of people to have at a wedding. at this point I'm just typing the random thoughts I've had throughout the day and while writing this because I'm looking for any excuse to put off going to bed, partially bc it involves getting up and cleaning up the desk and all the other fun "closing shift" duties that I escaped last night by going to bed first. why oh why is today only tuesday?

got my bff's cats some fancy catnip/silvervine mix and winnie LOVED it. instantly rolled all over the place and played very intensely with one of her toys for a while. wyatt was unaffected lol

So I got my cats some catnip with silvervine and the results are MIXED.

Kovu and Raphael LOVE IT. Kovu is rolling around in it on the floor like a wild hoyden. Raphael practically latched onto my hand and ate out of it like a wild and desperate animal.

Patience and Whitney seem to like it when I can get them to try it but they don't seem enthused. And Patience took a long time to try it. Whitney rolled for like one minute and doesn't want to try it again.

Batthew refuses to try it at all. He does not want to try it. His body is a temple that will not be polluted by Drugs. Aslan didn't want to try it the first time and when I offered it again he took One Nibble and instantly instinctively swatted at the offending substance in my hand. So that's a solid No from him, LOL

I make a mix of silvervine and catnip to get them extra stoned, and Andy has decided it is her favorite thing in existence. We had to put the jar up on the very top shelf of a cupboard with a hard to open door, because she's a menace about it.

i adopted a cat today and im unable to take her outside on a harness (as i live in an apartment building). do you have any other enrichment ideas? i want her to be happy. (if it matters, shes two years old)

Here’s some different kinds of enrichment, broken down into different categories. I like to try to hit at least one activity in each of these categories a day with my high-energy cat. It may be different for a lower energy one!

Touch

Because apartments are often a smaller space, it’s important to take advantage of vertical space to keep your kitty entertained. If you have some money to spare, cat trees or cat shelving is a great way to give your cat some more room to play. If you can’t drop money on those things, clearing off some taller people furniture for your cat to sit on works just as well, or you can build your own cat furniture. 

Interactive play is an important part of a daily routine with your cat, and can help you bond with her. Feather wands are almost always a hit with cats. Experiment with different types to see what she loves most! If you’re lucky she may also be able to learn how to play fetch. Laser pointers are fun too, but make sure that you give your cat a treat afterwards so she doesn’t get frustrated. Or you could just be like me and Dave- pile up a ton of plushies beside you and throw them for your cat to chase. 

Another interactive activity to do with your cat is clicker training! You can train her to do some productive tasks (like “come here”, “go to carrier”, etc) or you can just teach her some fun ones like “high five” or “roll over”. 

Taste

Food enrichment is also a great way to mix up your kitty’s life! A fun way to help her get used to her new home is to hide treats. As she explores she can stumble on the treats (or she can actively “hunt” them down)!

Alternatively, puzzle feeders are usually a hit for lots of cats. You can buy them store-bought or make up your own. Dave loves his! 

Cat grass can be purchased from most pet stores (or you can grow some seed on your own) for your cat to munch on. Most cats also like catnip, honeysuckle, and silvervine.

Smell

As long as your cat has her shots, try bringing in some branches and things from outside for her to smell! Since fall is coming up, try bringing her a box full of leaves for her to dig around in. Depending on your area, it may be a good idea to research what trees are around and ensure that they are not toxic to cats.

Put your cat’s toys into a bucket of catnip to sit for a while and then let her play with them. Toys that were old news will suddenly seem brand new again!

Sight

When you’re away from home, it’s still important for her to be entertained. If you have a window, perhaps set up a bird feeder to attract birds. Or if you’re like me and don’t have that luxury, throw on some “cat TV” for her to watch in your living room. It’s more or less the same thing!

If you have a balcony, you may also be able to set up a catio. This can allow her to safely enjoy the outdoors without being exposed to the dangers. If you don’t have the time/money/resources for a catio, maybe just take her out in her carrier to chill for a little bit.

I have to say, I've been pretty pleased with all the cat toys I've bought at Aldi. The cardboard scratch houses, the tunnel tent, the automatic laser toys, and now the crinkle cat bags have all been well received.

The cats are currently high as balls off the catnip/silvervine mix that came with the bag. And I only used about half of what came with it!
