Kancolle actually has a ton of lore, it's just almost exclusively WWII pacific theater/Japanese navy facts and it's spread across 300 or so girls. So instead of things like 'here's what abyssals are and why we're fighting them' you get 'hirato has complex feelings about letting a ship she was escorting be sunk by mines and the fact that she currently exists as a minesweeper in the JMSDF' and 'shigure has extreme survivor's guilt after all her fleetmates were sunk in the battle of surigao strait and she's haunted by it even though they're all alive with her as shipgirls'

while I expected lots of cute moments with bb-8 and pew-pew adventures in Poe Dameron: Flight Log (which, don’t get me wrong, I definitely did get and was very happy about!!) along with lots of cool ship specs and tech details—

what I wasn’t expecting (a surprise, to be sure, but a welcome one) was several instances of incredibly heartfelt, evocative, and sweet introspections from Poe on his family, upbringing, philosophy / ethics, the resistance, and love 🥺 so many sweet characterization tidbits in this book, I really enjoyed reading it ♡

if you’re interested in reading it as well, I borrowed it (for free!) on internet archive which I highly highly recommend, it was such a fun read and it’s very easy & user-friendly to borrow books from them!

the thing about this post is that, in my experience, people don't complain about so-called smith college problems (which was always itself an awfully snide coinage) because they don't understand that they're localized problems; they complain about smith college problems because said problems are cropping up like caltrops in a subcultural space to which they belong, and rendering it hostile to them.

and obviously one can come up with examples of this dynamic it's very easy to portray as ridiculous and entitled, like the first two in this reblog: 'support women who shave their legs and wear makeup every day' and 'let's hear it for masculine men.' absurd! but the thing is, it's also very easy to imagine the sort of subcultural toxicity that would produce complaints like that: criticism of compulsory femininity, while hella justified, can very easily tip over into an anti-femininity that's liable to leave a lot of femmes feeling as though they're being sneered at, because, well, they are! similarly, a lot of this website is sufficiently misandrist¹ that it leaves very little room for eg trans men looking to lean into a masculinity that broader society tried to deny them. and then there's this reblog of the smith college problems post, that rolls its eyes at bisexuals who object to other-gender attraction being framed as necessarily straight, and the first reply to the more recent post, that says snidely 'normalize not transitioning,' as if there weren't plenty of queer spaces in which sneering at 'bihets' and 'theyfabs' is a nastily common pastime.

i don't, personally, think it's an accident that all these examples affect groups who exist in a liminal space between hegemonic acceptance and outgroup acceptance, and in practice end up feeling alienated by both types of space. and personally, i think we can and should do better; i think we have to disarm broader societal inequality by working towards actual equality, for everyone, and firmly refusing to indulge this persistent, pernicious urge to revenge that wants, so very badly, to just tilt the social seesaw in the opposite direction…

⸻ ¹ no, misandry does not per se count as oppression. it does, however, combine with other axes of oppression like Blackness, transness, queerness, &c, in complex ways. it's also just tar pit behavior, imo, when indulged in with any serious frequency.

Not a longtime follower, I saw in one of your posts you imply to dislike Otohan as a character. Can you elaborate (or direct me to a post where you did elaborate and I missed)?

Oh there's not much to elaborate on. She's boring. Her mechanics are great and she serves as a formidable threat to Bells Hells but in the same way that a giant razor-sharp swinging axe does: lethal and frightening, but not a particularly good compelling conversationalist. We know virtually nothing about the Apex War so "Legend of the Peaks" carries very little weight. She never actually had any real conversation with Imogen, just a weird appearance in a few of her dreams and a bunch of confusing threats in an attempt to perhaps exalt her (?) when in retrospect I actually think Imogen probably exalted in Gelvaan and that's what led to her nearly killing a couple of people. I don't know why she specifically joined the Ruby Vanguard or began recruiting others, how she got involved with the Paragon's Call, her past relationship with the Raven Queen, why her tactics on Ruidus specifically changed from "preserve Imogen" to "kill 'em all" or like, literally anything about her. Like...I've been guilty of this in my home games but sometimes you come up with a sick-ass NPC build and forget to figure out like, the rest of their deal, and even if that's not true and Matt had a rich backstory for her that simply didn't come up, she felt like that.
