Stop telling me to buy crap
Billboard installation Gorizia, Italy - 2024
youtube
The final act of the billboard installation, carried out by a team of public workers, becomes a crucial part of the exhibition. This âperformanceâ is a deliberate nod to the invisible labour involved in installing advertising, serving as a metaphor for how we overlook waste in daily life. By turning this mundane task into a spectacle, the exhibition asks viewers to reconsider the value and visibility of both waste and advertising. This act will be documented and will form a critical part of the exhibitionâs narrative.

let's all hold hands and think of michiru not having any real significant place in anyone's life not even maple of iteration4 fame
she's a stand in for gashu and emiri and maple's favored people. and it eats her up inside because just why can she not be recognized for being a person in her own right unless she's angry or deluded & no longer fits into the role they've presumed she must fill in their lives. it's only because she provides them an effigy of what they're seeking that they'll provide her a step forward. & if she doesn't look too closely then she can retain her sanity in believing it is real.
she's the epitome of grief and yet she must move forward because she was put on this earth to do things that no one else is capable of and which only she holds the motivation for because death trails in her every step. no one wishes for humanity's peace more than her, and there's something a tad selfish in that too. because maybe. maybe. others will see that there is no one else like her, and neither was there anyone like the person they'd lost. it's a disservice to both to assume as much...
& of course she's afraid of losing their favorability, however shallow it was, but it's far preferable to die alone and truly, achingly unknown than be remembered in the shadow of a corpse

Things to work on:
Perhaps in order of scale/importance(?)
Stats
The whole thing needs to be relooked! even need to research this first.Â
Moods
Relook at quantifying moods. Is using a scale the best way to do so?
Onboarding/Tutorial
This will need to be researched too. Whatâs best for people that like to do things (probably a tutorial) and whatâs the best way to go about this?
MemoriesÂ
Someone suggested I look at misuse cases, and one of the examples they provided were bad memories. What if the graphs only showed the user being sad? What then?Â
I also need to research the way to quantify something like moods and emotions.
Redesign the page.
Day/night button
Moving this to somewhere more accessible
Export as PDF
I think having this option in the same area as where users can go get their digital diaries printed.

MS2 - Prototype 3 - Engagement UI/UX
COMMUNICATION FROM DEVICE TO DEVICE WITH WEB SOCKETS
For the engagement prototype, I decided first to focus on to be able to create a functional, device to device communication. Iâve chosen collaborative drawing as a single engagement and tried to implement it with socket.io and p5.js
Local host 1
The first engagement prototype was between two desktop local browser and wasnât working between mobile and desktop.Â
Local Host 2
Second Iteration with Paper.js and Socket.io
Since paper.js has more control over SVG images I wanted to improve drawing experience with paper.js.Â
The rest of the week, I improved my concept by deciding main functionality. As the result of my ongoing researches on language learning, I noticed associations are the important part of learning and I wanted to create a playful scenario around word associations as the case study.
Ajit Narayan's word game to communication in every language is very inspirational for me while making research about language learning. He basically creates a schema based on the association between people, objects, verbs and directions and based on this scheme he offers a new language learning model. His ideas become the structure of my idea to create an association based playful experience to learn vocabulary.

Sketches

Based on the idea I created the first visuals to be able to make a user test.

FINAL PAPER OUTLINE
I also improve my research by focusing more on museum digital experiences and engagement by using mobile devices. If you want to see more you can look at my final paper outline and researches here:

Results to the hypotheses:
Stats â have a more clear layout
Hypothesis: Having a clear layout will allow users to easily enter another variable, add a mood, and learn more about themselves.
Result: The layout isnât clear enough. Especially where users need to add the mood for another day (that isnât today). It wasnât intuitive enough. Participants took a long time trying to figure this out. Also the tasks that were set up did not allow the participants to understand the other features to this aspect of the app.
Add entry â changing the checklist icon automation, adding a colour task
Hypothesis: People would understand what the colour icon at the end means
Result:Â Participants understood, especially with the animation of the colour sliding in and out of the main palette.
Hypothesis: Less cumbersome because of the checklist automation, and having it change state once tapped on.
Result:Â This was a more usable to go about to do this, participants were receptive to do this.
Collage â adding more interactivity
Hypothesis: Give more interactivity would allow users to understand how to use this feature
Result: The animation and interactivity allowed participants to visually see what was happening and therefore understood what was going on. Because of this, they were able to complete the task without any problems.
Structure â multiple ways of doing things
Hypotheses: having multiple ways to do things would go with usersâ mental models on how to do things.
Result: All participants had the same mental models, especially with the way they went about doing things (changing the date/editing a note)
Concerns
The prototype not being real enough â lacking in animations
The animations really helped with participants understanding what was going on with the app.
Difficulty of Tasks:
Most tasks (on average) skewed more towards the âeasyâ part of the scale. Out of all of the tasks, participants had the most trouble with the stats task. So this will one of the largest areas of focus for the next round of iteration.
Usability Scale:
This is a lot like the previous iteration. The positive statements âI can learn to use this app,â âI was confident using this app,â etc, were towards the Agree end, which was good to see. The only thing that was a bit controversial (lack for a better word) was the âI need instructions to use this app.â A lot mentioned that after using the app, they would understand, but they would need an explanation.Â
Because this is a user-centred app, Iâd like to hope that they wouldnât need any explanation to use the app. So this is something that I think I need to work on. having the balance of on screen assistance, but not going overboard. Having intuitive icons and features without having to overly explain the functions is going to be difficult.Â
Interesting notes:
Participants had given me some ideas or thoughts that I want to take forward
Changing the mood buttonâs location - perhaps this is needed
Moving the day/night icon to somewhere more accessible
Having an option to export as PDF

Audio
Using the second set of 'drum beats' that I created with the 'musical chairs' I decided to see if it could be used in conjunction with guitars and a bass (taken from garageband samples) to create a small snippet of an actual song.Â
As the final outcome, I am quite happy that all the editing has ended out with an alright piece of music that has been derived from seeing the original experiment from a different way of seeing the concept (in literal terms).Â

Testing #4
Define the goals of the test:
Questions/hypothesis
Stats â have a more clear layout
Hypothesis: Having a clear layout will allow users to easily enter another variable, add a mood, and learn more about themselves.
Add entry â changing the checklist icon automation, adding a colour task
Hypothesis: People would understand what the icon at the end means
Hypothesis: Less cumbersome because of the checklist automation, and having it change state once tapped on.
Collage â adding more interactivity
Hypothesis: Give more interactivity would allow users to understand how to use this feature
Structure â multiple ways of doing things
Hypotheses: having multiple ways to do things would go with usersâ mental models on how to do things.
Concerns
The animations would be too much in the prototype
Users being confused about where they are in the app
Areas of Interest
The stats tab
The collage feature
Structure
Animations
Purpose
Getting thoughts on the âimprovedâ features
Testing the animations of the app, to increase usability
Determine format and setting of study:
Face-to-face and in-house at university â in a lab setting. It will also be moderated by me, as it will provide me with richer design interests. I would also be able to interject and ask questions and prompt comments from participants. Because this is an in-person test, the interaction feels more personable, and I am able to detect cues such as body language and facial expressions.
Number of users:
Nielsen recommends 2-5, and I will aim to get 5 people.
Recruit the right participants:
My target audience involves:
People that primarily use print journals and planners
People that are tech savvy
People that are aged between 18-25 years old
Tasks:
Specific tasks â although there is a specific task and flow, I am able to also learn how people discover and explore information by watching them in-person and hearing their comments.
I am also going to get them to physically walk around and time them to test against user specifications.

Collecting metrics:
To collect data to analyse, other than writing notes on the participantsâ actions, I also plan to have a post-evaluation survey which will ask users about their thoughts and how likely they would use the app over their current diary. I also encouraged the participants to make comments or suggestions whenever they felt appropriate.

Iteration 4
Ways of Seeing â Sight and Sound Â
Does blindess change our way of seeing and perception?
In iterations 3 I developed on the idea of perception and reality, where I experimented if percepetion affected our way of perceving reality. During this process it lead to me questioning âwhat if people canât see, how would sound help them perceive reality and the world we live in?â.
Through research I found out how blind people can identify an object by the sound or echo it makes while moving through the world around him or her. Babies or children born blind use extra hand movements as they crawl, slapping the floor to create a kind of auditory and sensory feedback. While adults create imagery of the world through hearing and touching objects as well as descriptions from people.Â
During iteration 4, I asked by brother to take an auditory recording of Strathfield roads while I was at COFA. Hearing the recoding of Strathfield roads for the first time and not knowing what was going on blinded me for this experiment. I first picture and imagine what sound I might encounter then wrote them down on cups, categorizing each sound with a colour. So when hearing the recording I would pour a colour representing the sound I just heard on to a blank canvas. Thus the end result of the experiment represents my blind perspective of Stratified roads.
By incorporating blindness in iteration 4, it led to me think what if the world had no light and people lived through darkness. Hence this is an idea in which I would like to incorporate into iteration 5

ITERATION 4)
Erasure of Knowledge - Absence of Understanding - of the original function of clothing
I have chosen to broaden my understanding of Erasure of knowledge, which was my WK5 experiment.Â
I have developed this concept to one of Absence of Understanding. What would happen if you didnât know what the original/traditional function of an object was? How would you approach or use an object if you hadnât previously interacted with it or seen how society interacts with it?
To choose the objects that I would experiment with I did a small Chance experiment. I closed my eyes and when I opened them wrote down the first things my eye was drawn to: glass of water, t-shirt, amongst other things.
Documented through photography, this is an example of how, with an Absence of Understanding of what the original/traditional function of clothing is, what the perceived function of that object may be.Â
The original function of clothing would be to cover a persons body etc. However, in this iteration I have utilised the clothing to form a shelter- protecting someone from the elements
I have secured the clothing to a tree in a way that it could shield someone underneath. Through editing in Photoshop I have manipulated the image to look darker and more menacing - but still clearly showing the fabric so that it is clearer what I am trying to do.
