I took another drag of my cigarette, closing my eyes as the smoke made its burning trek down into my lungs before letting it waft out of my mouth, folding over itself as it drifted up towards the ceiling. It pooled around the base of the ceiling fan, which spun so slow and lazily that it was basically useless, and then disappeared altogether; I took another puff, and soon the ceiling was decorated with grey smoke once again.

I rolled my head over, raking my eyes across the motel room. It seemed I was one of, if not the only, guest here, and probably the best business the poor owners would get outside of teenagers on Friday nights; this dwindling town was barely big enough to warrant having a motel in the first place. The room—and the rest of the motel with it—was in near shambles. The one window, overlooking the cracked and pot-hole ridden parking lot, was yellowed to the point it could’ve been used for the stained glass of Jesus’s glowing crown. The curtains were threadbare and did next to nothing to stop any Toms from watching you sleep, the carpet felt like walking on crumbs, and the mattress had a visible valley in the center from the past twenty years of patrons. I kept the “Do Not Disturb” sign on the knob at all times so no maids would waste their time changing the towels I wasn’t going to use or wash the sheets I was barely going to sleep in, and God forbid try to tidy up and rummage through my things. I’d rather the poor girls just scroll on their phone in the maintenance closet. Besides, I wouldn’t be here long.

I stubbed the end of my cigarette out against the edge of the nightstand, watching the burn mark slowly fade outwards as the cherry began to die out. I had forgotten to grab an ashtray when I was out earlier and, unlike most motels I’d stayed at, this one didn’t provide one. I would have felt bad if it weren’t for the dozens of other, older matching circular burns adorning the rest of the chipped wood finish across the nightstand and the headboard. I swung my feet over the edge of the bed, shoes already on (what’s the point in taking them off when the carpet is destroyed?), and grabbed my shoulder bag off the floor with one grand sweep. I stepped out the door, swinging the room key around my finger as I trotted down the sidewalk into town.

It was quiet and cold; no one was out this late on a Tuesday evening in late October. Figures. Like all the other towns I’d passed through, nothing particularly interesting happens—just another little suburb, populated by kids who never left fathering kids who will probably never leave, either.

What I mean is, it’s a shithole. An average east coast town, the local park littered with fast food wrappers and beer bottles, all shoved up into the bushes to hide it away—currently covered by the orange and yellow leaves blown up over everything. The only population seems to be old people, high schoolers, and their parents, and the only things that happen worth noting is whatever happens at the local high school. All I’m doing is giving the news something fun for once in its sorry life. They should thank me, honestly, when all is said and done; people will actually know the name Summit, New Jersey. Nothing like the high school football team getting the headline for the fourth week in a row to break your journalistic spirit.

Not that it mattered. The place was a shithole, and it would stay that way; murder certainly wasn’t going to make it better. Shitholes were my favorite, though—my specialty, if you would. That’s why they’ll never catch me, too many little nowhere towns to look in. Twenty bucks and a Greyhound ticket will take you anywhere.

Well, it was probably more likely it was just because the cops don’t know who I am. I like to think it’s my smarts that throw them off, though, and not their own incompetence.

As I strolled down the center of town, I glanced down the dark, dirty alleyways that adorned the sides of the mom-and-pops that have long since closed, and teenage employees long since returned home. The warm yellow of the streetlights lit up the dirt caked on the concrete floor, spurts of wild grass and little flowers popping their heads up through the cracks. So many crime dramas and PSAs posit violent crime as something existing only within dark, dirty alleyways. Do people actually think NCIS is going to show you the reality, the cold hard facts? It’s laughable.

Everyone has a pattern, though. Some people get up and drink coffee on their way to an office job, some people help their kids off to the bus before dressing themselves. I pick up odd jobs here and there, shoveling dirt for landscaping or painting houses, but I prefer to make my money out of pawnshops than flipping burgers. Social interaction has never exactly been my strong suit; everyone has their fears, and my worst is being recognized for what I am. Hopping towns helps keep my profile low—I’ve been all over the east coast at this point, and through the most convoluted routes. Personal relationships are nonexistent—I don’t know my victims, and I like to keep it that way. Even when stalking out a target beforehand, my top priority is anonymity, not information.

I don’t do all this for fun, though. At my core, I’m a thief; I take cash and whatever else I could pawn easily, without a trace. I don’t do roommates, partners, or dogs, or some kind of security system I had yet to figure out; robotics class taught me enough to cut the right wires for simple alarms, but not much more. Anything else isn’t worth my time—it was pointless to risk getting myself in danger for a robbery when it takes fifteen minutes to fill out an application for Speedway.

I rob because it’s easy. I kill for my own protection—like insurance. That’s it.

The wind tossed my hair every which way, sending a chill through my thin windbreaker, and I hunched my shoulders in closer. I kept my eyes glued to the sidewalk beneath my feet, rife with more weeds sticking up between the rocks and concrete. It was dusk; my shadow stretched out further and further in front of me, slowly melting into the darkness of the disappearing sun. Soon, I was out of town entirely, surrounded by trees instead of restaurants, and the houses grew fewer and farther in between. The intermittent streetlights flickered, sending an eerie yellow glow across the empty country road, illuminating the faded lines and decades of patched asphalt. Just as it became a struggle to even see rocks below my feet, I came face to an elegant mailbox.

I looked up to a long, winding driveway heading up a hill dotted with huge, weeping oak trees. The lawn was well manicured—the grass didn’t have a spot of brown in sight, save for some sprigs of wildflowers spotted throughout the incline. The trek up the drive was long and dark, accompanied by multiple near misses with a face full of dirt from nearly tripping over decorative boulders, but, after a few minutes, I came face to face with a large green and white Victorian. A flag for the local football team was hung off the porch, swaying in the light autumn wind. Through the large bay windows adorning the front I could see straight into a well decorated living room, complete with the glow of the television and a young woman watching from the couch. I noticed her at the grocery store a few days ago, while picking up cigarettes and Coke; she looked like she was on her way to a date, with matching set of jade jewelry and an expensive Vuitton purse.

Off the side of the house, past some luscious hedges, was a stone path leading around to the rear of the house, leading up to a back door and a concrete patio, complete with—bingo!—a circuit box. I dropped my bag to the ground and rummaged through it, settling a flashlight between my teeth and juggling wire cutters in my hand. The circuit box popped open easily; the wire cutters helped to pry my way through the tangle of cords and breakers, careful to disable only the burglar alarm. I picked and plucked until I felt satisfied, before pulling my bag back over my head and sliding over to the door. It was a simple metal storm door with a simple screen in the middle, framing an equally cheap looking door on the inside. Trading wire cutters for a box knife made easy work of the screen, and then, to my joy, I found the inner door wasn’t even locked. The seclusion of country living is quite comforting, I suppose.

Crawling through the hole where the screen used to be wasn’t easy, but luckily I travel light. The door led to a dim kitchen, lit only by what light bled into it from the living room. The television was playing a movie I didn’t recognize, the soundtrack accompanied by the crunching of popcorn. Beside me was a landline phone on the counter, which I promptly unplugged and shoved in my bag. My investigation was cut short as the couch began to creak; a shadow appeared in the doorway and I quickly tucked myself into a corner leading back to the front door. A scream rang out—likely from the ripped up storm door. Jane Doe turned her back to me as she began searching the counter for the landline, and I left my hiding spot to wrap one hand across her mouth and used other to scoop her wrists up, pinned behind a hip. As she struggled under me, I pulled her closer and kicked one of her legs out from under her, leaving her weight to rest between one socked foot and my hands.

“Just do as I say and you won’t be hurt,” I whispered, putting on the softest voice I had, “or I can do this by force. It’s your choice.”

Slowly, she stopped struggling.

Swiftly and intentionally, I moved my hand from her mouth to the back of her head and slammed it down onto the granite counter, using the momentum to toss my bag onto it as well, muffling the sound of bone cracking against stone and the cry of pain that followed it. Shifting my arm to hold her down, my freed hand rummaged through my bag—the loud ruffling of metal and plastic against canvas mostly drowned out the groans, and I was inclined to ignore what seeped through. I finally pull out bundles of zip ties, closing one around her wrist with my teeth. I straightened up, looping fingers through the zip tie and the others around her throat, and slowly pulled her upright with me. She sniffled as she lifted her head up, dripping blood onto the counter and rolling down the valley between her eyes and nose.

“This is where you’re gonna follow instructions. Walk upstairs.”

Slowly she shuffled out of the kitchen and through the hallway I was just in moments earlier. I reached out and flicked the light switch on as we passed, illuminating walls covered in family pictures and fine art. Around the corner was a tall staircase, framed by an elegantly carved banister, and leading up to an expansive second floor.

She paused at the top of the stairs, sniffling again. “I don’t have much,” she quavered. “If it’s money you want, then just take it. I won’t fight you I promise—”

I sighed; if I was interested in sob stories, I wouldn’t be holding a woman hostage in her own home, and it wouldn’t be a familiar act. I took a step towards the closest ajar door and kicked it wide, shoving her down into a nearby chair to shut up her whining. “Is there a safe I somehow missed?” I sneered, pulling out more zip ties to strap her down to the arms and legs. “I didn’t exactly see any stacks of cash laying around. But if you could point me to whatever room you keep the gold bars in, I’d greatly appreciate it.”

When I turned back around, she was silently crying, tears mixed with the congealed blood on her cheeks. “Oh, my dear,” I whispered, kneeling at her feet. “Calm down. You’ll be fine.”

She sniffed. “Really?”

A smile graced my lips and I let a chuckle out as I turned to pull a sharp, gleaming knife out of my bag. “No, probably not.”

in your earlier ask you said that yves is pretty much anti child so is he also anti pet? or maybe anti puppy/kitten/baby animal? when you described yves pretty much conditioning reader to dislike kids it reminded me when i got my kitten when she was three weeks old. it was during the lockdown so although i was there 24/7 i was lacking sleep because she refused to sleep on her own and i had to feed her every two hours and when she got older she got hyper and i needed to play with her so she could chill out a little more. i remember as i put her to sleep in my lap for the third time i thought to myself “is this what babies are like? but worse, dirtier and for a longer time?” as much as i love my little fur baby i don’t think i could go through that again so i wonder yves’ thoughts on pets. he gives off those vibes that he hates fur everywhere and can’t stand barking lol. but then again if reader wants a pet im assuming he’ll accommodate somehow.

Pets that need his constant attention like most mammals and noisy animals like the majority of birds are a big no for him.

However, he doesn't mind having reptilians as pets. As long as they're big enough to not lose them. He is indifferent to fishes, but he sees them more as home decor than actual living beings. Something akin to owning lava lamps.

He especially likes snakes. It fits with the aesthetic of his house and they're one of the lowest maintenance pets there is. He would meet all of its physical needs, but other than that, he wouldn't care to spend more time with it than necessary. The snake will be locked up in its enclosure at all times, unless you want to interact with it and he knows that your personality wouldn't lead to trouble. He knows everything there is to know about the snake, yet he sees it as a mere display piece for his living room.

Yves despises insects, he uses the presence of them as a sign that the environment isn't clean, and he does not appreciate having to think his house is filthy. No matter how much research he does on them and how many results show that insects do not necessarily equal dirty, Yves just could not accept them.

He is not squeamish, though. Yves despises them but he is not afraid of them, he knows how to handle a tarantula gently and keep calm when it decides to crawl under his turtleneck. If you threw a bucket of cockroaches on him he would not scream or flail, he would dodge it gracefully before dusting himself off. If any got onto him, he will just pick them off his clothes as if they're paper stickers. Yves will not beat around the bush and try to find a roll of newspaper or a bug spray, he is squashing that colony of spiders with his bare hands.

The way he could simply grab a handful of mealworms without hesitation makes the world think he loves bugs. He doesn't, not one bit.

You could simply shove him in a vat full of writhing maggots and he would come out as if he took a leisure swim in the pool, combing his hair with his fingers to get rid of any leftovers.

Yves would be annoyed more than horrified, lecturing you that pushing him into ponds of worms is rude while he jerks his head to expel the ones that are stuck in his ears.

Not to say he is inept at taking care of them. Yves can be an excellent caretaker for any and every animal. His research skills are unbelievably godly and he loathes the idea of him being perceived as incompetent in anything.

Yves also has a strangely high tolerance for all things disgusting and vile, he could clean up the most brutal bloody murder scene complete with mutilated bodies, decomposition, faeces, urine, vomit and other bodily fluids without wearing gloves or a gas mask; and still have an appetite to eat lunch immediately after. Vacuuming fur and sifting through the litter box is nothing to him. He just does not find much fulfillment in owning a pet. Hence, a pet becomes a parasite in his life, and he detests all things vermin.

If you wanted a furry companion so badly, he will hit the books and review the patterns in your life again.

Do you really want a pet or are you actually just bored? If it's the latter, he could effectively fill your time and make you forget about your desire for an animal companion. He could also negotiate his way out of this too.

Are you someone who hyper fixate on something or someone, then lose all interest after a few months? Then, he could wait it out. Taking care of your newest breathing toy as he counts down until you finally decide to abandon it and move on to greener pastures.

Are you someone who easily gives up at the first encounter of a problem? Maybe all it takes for you to drop the interest entirely is a meow that's too loud or a nip that's a bit too painful. He's going to train the animal to misbehave around you.

Are you someone who is susceptible to peer pressure? He is going to train your pet to misbehave around your loved ones. Manipulate your friends and family into thinking that you're an abusive or neglectful pet owner. He doesn't have to say a word to you, everyone is doing the pressuring for him.

Maybe you would fold under his dour glare and stern words, he can be quite scary at times. That generally reduces anyone into a shivering, crying mess that will not bring up the things that displeases him. This is usually the second-last resort to anything.

Perhaps you're a fierce animal lover and have a strong portfolio of being a cat or dog owner. You wouldn't give your beloved four legged friends up for the world, you will fight for them till your very last breath. Someone with unbreakable maternal/paternal instincts towards your precious fur babies. Giving them up is not in the equation.

Well, he is not above traumatizing you for life.

When push comes to shove, you might find your trusted non-human companions betraying you by lacerating your extremities to the point of no repair. Puncturing your throat with its sharp canines and claws, leaving you to breathe on a ventilator while Yves takes care of you in the hospital.

Or he could direct the attack to someone else, make you liable for lasting damages and having to put your seemingly rabid pets down. You would also have to live with the guilt of knowing you're mainly responsible for disfiguring that poor child's face, changing his life for the worse, just because you "didn't" train them well.

He warned you not to test him. Yves has been lenient and his patience has reached its limits. He may love you and want the best for you, but he is also very, very selfish.

Day two.

I showed up hoping that maybe today would be different. That maybe, with the first shift out of the way, I’d be given something—anything—that felt less degrading.

That hope lasted about five minutes.

The Tour (Again)

The moment I clocked in, I was introduced to Smitty by Samantha, the crew trainer. She was chipper in a way that made me nervous—like she was getting a kick out of what was about to happen.

Smitty is the night manager, which I quickly learned was a polite way of saying maintenance guy who gets stuck with every job nobody else wants to do. He was a lanky 20year old , eyes that looked half-asleep, and a cigarette tucked behind his ear. At first, he seemed okay—friendly, even.

“Alright, kid,” Smitty said. “Lemme show you around properly.”

What followed was another tour, except this time, instead of the basics, Smitty walked me through the hidden horrors of the store.

The fryer grease traps that had to be emptied nightly. The freezer, where everything smelled like frostbitten oil. The back alley, where trash bags leaked unholy liquids onto the pavement.

By the time we finished we got back to Samantha, Samantha asked Smitty on the back and grinned.

‘How was the tour? :) good?

“He’s yours till the end of the day.”

Smitty’s smile widened.

“Perfect! Let’s get you started.”

I should’ve known where this was going. I really should have. Smitty quickly brought be back to the bathroom and handed me gloves and pointed at the bathroom door.

“Lets Start in there.”

“Nobody cleaned the Bathroom last night so its a bit stinky”

I walked in and the smell hit me bad!

I really dont want to do this. I really wish i was back in College.

I needed the job. I needed the paycheck. So I went in.

Same routine. Gloves on. Mop ready. Deep breath.

It smelled worse today. Like someone had eaten a deep-fried mistake and then regretted it all over the floor. I gritted my teeth and started scrubbing.

Twenty minutes in, Smitty popped his head in. “You done?”

I looked at the tile, still streaked with unidentifiable stains. “Not yet.”

“Good,” he said. “When you’re done, meet me at the dish station.”

The Mountain of Dishes

I had never washed so many dishes in my life.

The sink was already piled high when I got there—greasy pans, sticky trays, plastic baskets coated in dried ketchup.

Smitty tossed me a scrubber. “Better get goin’.”

I rolled up my sleeves and got to work. Hot water and soap mixed into a filmy gray sludge at the bottom of the sink. Every time I dunked a pan, it splashed back onto me. By the time I was halfway through, I was drenched—shirt clinging to my arms, water pooling in my shoes.

I was scrubbing a particularly stubborn tray when I heard Smitty’s voice behind me.

“Hey, newbie?”

I turned, pushing wet hair out of my face. “Yeah?”

He folded his arms. “Why is there a turd in the urinal?”

I blinked. “What?”

“There’s a turd,” Smitty said, slower this time. “In the urinal. And I don’t recall puttin’ it there.”

I opened my mouth, closed it, then opened it again.

“That’s…not supposed to be there.”

Smitty nodded like I had just cracked some ancient mystery. “Exactly. Now go take care of it.”

I stared at him, half-expecting this to be some kind of hazing ritual. But no. He was serious.

I had thought maybe it was some tiny accident, something that could be flushed or wiped away. But no. This was deliberate. A full, intact, human-sized log. Resting there, in defiance of plumbing and basic decency.

I took a deep breath. “Any chance we can just…flush it?”

Smitty shook his head. “Urinals don’t flush solids.”

I looked at him, praying for some alternative. He handed me a a brown bag and some gloves.

I reached in, trying not to think about the warmth, the weight, the way it shouldn’t feel. I moved fast—grabbing it, tossing it into the toilet, flushing it away like it had never been there.

And then it happened.

The glove slipped.

I recoiled so fast I nearly tripped. Behind me, one of the crew members actually gagged.

I didn’t even wait for permission—I ran to the sink, turned the water on full blast, and scrubbed until my skin felt raw. But no matter how hard I scrubbed, I still felt dirty.

The Aftermath

Smitty patted my back as I walked out, my sleeves still dripping. “Not bad, newbie. You’ll get used to it.”

I nodded, but I knew the truth.

You don’t get used to this. You just learn to live with it.

The rest of that night i did dishes untill 10pm and then they had me go home.

okay this is only based off of what i know from what ive played, i havent read any wikis or anything and i dont have every file, so this just what i remember

So basically you're a criminal who was given a chance by a company called Urbanshade to earn freedom, money, and have your criminal record pardoned. All you gotta do is go take a submarine to Hadal Blacksite that's on lockdown to retrieve a crystal. The blacksite is located in a trench HELLA DEEP underwater in a weird pocket where the water pressure is that of a swimming pool. But since the pressure outside of that pocket is SUPER high, no living thing can get in or out of the blacksite unless you use their advanced submarines. You are now an expendable, and you aren't expected to return. Urbanshade does a lot of unethical experiments and tests at the hadal blacksite, some of which try to kill you. Many that you encounter are fish related, but other entities and creatures are located there as well, some are harmless too. (think scp)

One of the experiments was on sebastian solace who was convicted of murdering 9 people and was sentenced to death til urbanshade showed up. They gave him a bunch of different fish DNA and the whole point of it was to figure out how to give their employees gills, and it worked. But sebastian went from a regular human to a mutated fish creature. They didnt have any use for him after that so they made him do underwater maintenence. Then urbanshade found out he was wrongly accused and was innocent but it was too late bc hes a mutant fish now, so they just gave him better living conditions. Then when he was being transported somewhere he faked anesthesia and killed a guard, got his keycard, and started releasing other experiments and creatures from their cells. So its sebastian's fault the Hadal Blacksite is on lockdown. Then after all that he sets up a shop where you can buy gear and stuff thatll help you, and you give him the data you collect. Also urbanshade says if Z-13 (sebastian) is encountered, shoot on sight.

Theres also this ai called p.AI.nter who was originally a painting ai who was taken and made to mine crypto. It gets connected to the blacksite and uses turrets on you, tricks you into going through wrong doors to get killed/hurt by a creature, and locks you in rooms for a short time with a creature that will hurt you when you look at it (you're forced to look at it). Plus some other stuff that i dont remember. p.AI.nter has said that it prevents the player from reaching the crystal because if we do, sebastian and it cant escape. It has a kind of multi faceted personality, mocking the player at one point and apologizing at another. This is because it tried to kill itself by overclocking it's systems, so its all messed up.

idk why the crystal is so important, idk how getting it will prevent sebastian and pAInter from escaping. all i know is,

I know I am not qualified to speak on the difference between city and rural atrocities. But, for me personally, there is always something more horrifying about rural horror than urban horror. There is something about being outside of the city, the nearest grocery store is maybe 30 minutes to 3 hours out. As is any police department, your neighbor is about 2 to 5 miles out. And its just you and a the woodlands next to your house.

I dunno what it is, but monsters in the sewers, the dark alleys, on the roof tops of the apartment, in your mirrors, the neighbor next door, the park isn't nearly as scary as. There is something freaking out the farm animals and its coming from the woods.

...that being said. I do have this one idea for horror that makes what I have described here as mundane that still gives that vibe. At least to me.

Anyone here ever watched Lady in the Water? I know its like a really bad film where M. Night casts himself as an all knowing prophet who should be respected and a movie critic gets killed in it. In response to, critics lambasting SIGNs after he succeeded with Sixth Senese.

Anyway, not the point. Imagine an apartment complex like that. High rise. But compact. A singular, massive, set of buildings close together. Parking lot on the outside, apartments on the inside and at the middle of it all a pool area. Kind of like a hotel where the apartments raise up to ten floors. But its enclosed, isolated enough, escape is on the outside rather than the inside. If you get isolated in the pool area or the hallways its harder to get out than to run in.

I've digressed. Imagine this entire complex of apartments. Quiet. Like dead quiet. Like its 3 in the afternoon and there is nothing but silence. Only the distance free way traffic making any noise and its so quiet that despite the on ramp being twenty blocks down. It carries the noise anyway. No trains. No passersby. This apartment complex is empty and silent. No manager, no land lord or lady, janitor is gone, the residence left their cars parked. But there is no record of anyone even living there. The city itself forgot it existed and only discovered it recently because there was a black out and there was a business nearby that needed its power returned. Who knows how long its been forgotten. It seems obvious that someone should of heard or seen it. It doesn't appear on Google Maps, its not in any phone book or city record. No taxes or deeds attached to it. Just an empty apartment complex in the middle of the city. And its dead quiet.

Maintenance men go in with city officials to scout the place. Lock smith opens the door to each apartment. People were clearly living there. There's clothing in the bed rooms, towels in the bathroom, stocked up on toilet paper and hand soap. Tooth brushes in cups, dishes in soaking.

Stranger still, there is no precise time as to which any of these people just "stopped". Some apartments have dinner maranading in the fridge, others have bacon on the counter, others have everything put away and the dishwasher full. Another has laundry out hanging and another there is no sign of struggle, in fact, based on the placement of the clothing. These people were fast asleep. TV dinners on folding tables in front of the Television. Lottery tickets on the nightstand.

These people were all living their daily lives...until they just stopped in the middle of whatever they were doing.

What caused them all to stop? What made the city forget?

Who knows. But thats pretty much the gist of my horror idea to make the urban horror go from what I consider to be mundane to suspenseful. Make a place that is usually busy, populated, and noisy and make it feel as isolated and alone as living on a farm near a woodland.
