Literary brain tells me it wants more drama/character growth between Megumi and Toji. But my useless overly big heart wants to punch Toji and protect Megumi at all costs bc he just showed up on the screen like the kool aid man and burst right into my heart and I shan't forgive Megumi for that but now I will die for him so ¯\_( ツ)_/¯

Bro I can't help but feel had for Gojo. That shit must have hurted. Like he looked so calm and collected when it all happened but was he really? His best friend potential lover went feral and murdered an entire village AND his family then he tried to kill his first years once and now AGAIN what is happening. Did you see the look on Gojo's face when Yaga told him he went rogue? That was a face of hurt and betrayal he couldn't even begin to understand at the young age of... What was it, 17? 18? He was practically a little itty bitty baby compared to now. I haven't read the prequel yet don't laugh at me but I've heard it hurts so much worse having to face Getou back then AND now. Stupid brain worms, stop fucking around.

I wanted to hate Todo too hut before he even turned good I couldn't. I have a thing for big buff boys who have zero brains and too much brawns I'm looking at you Metal Bat, Captain Ōbi I just wanna adopt/marry them because in all reality they're trying their best. I'm really glad Todo exists and has his big brother delusion because honestly I think that's something Yuji needs, especially in the current arc. Yuji needs as much support as he can get.

Low key unrelated but I have a theory that Gojo can see everything from his little cube prison and knows what's going on. Its probably because of the six eyes, or because he's just fucking Gojo, or even because Geto seems kinda sadistic and would do something like that. But I can imagine him watching Megs and Toji fight and it absolutely destroying him. For starters, Gojo killed him .... Right? Wtf is he doing back? What? Second don't commit suicide in front of your kid oh my god Toji what (I'm probably just salty because of a past experience, but also, calm down Toji oh my god) and third I can see it hurting Gojo because in a way it feels like he's been trying to protect Megumi. Its obvious Gojo has this attachment to Megumi, and maybe it's because they've known each other so long, but I don't think Gojo is prepared to deal with the aftermath. Does he have to tell him, if Megs doesn't put the pieces together? Will he have to knock some sense into him to actually tell him? Because he DID try to tell Megs once before and he avoided it like the plague. Its also gotta hurt when you feel like someone's dad and you witness them have a bad interaction with their other dad.

Throw in his daughter being on the brink of death, his other son being emotionally demolished, his second year kids lost in the void and not even his void, his best friend locked him in a box, his other best friend exploded, etc. I think Gojo I pretty distraught even if he doesn't show it

Bro okay my brain is riddled with ideas like this and 90% of them are always angst. Idk where tf they come from half the time but they exist and I hate it. They're always self inserts too.

So I actually read this ask last night, but due to personal reasons I didn't reply to it now, and I actually started experimenting writing out this scenario. I had to stop when I wrote the line "Approximately one year after the first finger was consumed, Itadori Yūji was formally executed. At three minutes to midnight, Sukuna Ryomen was expelled from his body, destroying the vessel along with it. The executioner was none other than the teenager's teacher and mentor Gojo Satoru. When Y/N awoke to this news, they attacked on sight."

Oh god I made myself so sad with that line

And i do really want to post some of my fics, like I did with Nobara Meeting Sukuna For The First Time. However, I only posted that because it was short and simple lmao it was basically just a meme I didn't even run it though grammarly like I do with the headcanons.

I like sticking to the headcanons as of right now because I feel like grammar didn't exist when I make those. I can spell things wrong and leave off punctuation and word then like I'm a third grader just learning English and no one will laugh lmao. Fanfics kinda stress me out because i want them to be perfect. I also have a hard time with fight scenes and transitioning and it's s mess.

I REALLY want to write out my Guardian Angel! Junpei AU because I think it's so cute. Just the idea that this boy is assigned to fight against fate and the higher ups and keep Yuji alive despite him being an idiot and a target is cute to me. Like I just canon him being the plantonic equivalent of in love with this boy and he feels like he rlly owes it to Yuji for trying to save him it's the LEAST he can do. Plus I need the mental imagine if Junpei annoying reader-chan into finding Yuji because "they play a pivotal role in Yuji's future" just for the "pivotal role" to literally be playing therapist and just being there for him and being a medium between Junpei and Yuji because guardian angels aren't allowed to reveal themselves to the person they're guarding but also/// he might risk his wings being stripped just to talk to Yuji one more time////

Okay I'm going to stop now

But yea, maybe if I have time and create little mini works like Nobara Meeting Sukuna For the First Time I'll def post them! I'll work on casually making them longer and soon I'll be confident to posts longer ones. But until then I hope just the headcanons at alright ;-;

(Episode 8 !!

Good lord, this is a lot. Knew we’d get into a lot of shizz with it being titled “XV”. It really felt like the episode that would proceed episode 13 (like previous seasons when the episode is named after the season). There ended up being a pretty hype battle near the end, even playing “FINAL COMMANDER” again to top it all off.

But I’m getting ahead of myself.

First off, there’s Carol. It’s SOOOOOO nice to see her back and now we get to see her fight AND sing. And as expected, she has no issues with fighting them.

One thing that I loved about this fight was that Carol was basically posing like she was a conductor as they fought.

Like the way her arms move is just...very pleasing. Lol. Plus she is still powerful. I really thought she wouldn’t come back remembering who she was because when she transferred Elfnein to her body, Carol was in an amnesiac state. She barely remembered anything so I assumed it would be the same. But nope, Carol sure knows who she is, what happened all the way back in GX and everything. (they explain later in the episode that she somehow managed to make a copy of her core personality, explaining why it was still her).

But in truth, I’m actually really happy that Carol and Elfnein can share the same body without consequences. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but maybe not them willingly sharing the same body or something.

One thing in this scene that was super sweet was Carol asking for Elfnein to make sure all the autoscorers get a proper burial. Elfnein described Carol as being someone who’s actually kind, and I think this managed to show how she can be. It was a really sweet moment, one that made me want to cry a little bit honestly.

Once Carol drives Nobel Red away, she contacts everyone at HQ to figure out a plan to help save Miku and destroy that representation of the Divine Power in the sky.

SideNote: Keywords from episode 7 have been translated in english now and helps describe what that giant/baby thing is, as well as Millaarc’s “stained glance” in detail.

Divine Power

The divine power hidden within the Vambrace of Shem-Ha overflowed due to its immense volume exceeding initial simulations. This resulted in a temporary purge of the energy outside of the Château, where it gathered. Plans were amended to allow the divine power time to materialize and fill the girl serving as its vessel.

The giant mass of energy "located" at the highest point of Château de Tiffauges does not move with any clear will of its own. Instead, it merely defends itself from approaching helicopters and Adaptors while attempting to invade its chosen "vessel" like a hermit crab searching for a shell. Its "reactions" seem limited to mere instincts and impulses.

Stained Glance

An attempt at recreating an ancient power once thought to be held by vampires, just as the name suggests, it allows the user to forcibly interfere with others minds via a cursed gaze.

It's difficult to use on someone of disciplined will and requires taking advantage of the target's weaknesses or emotions, and so can't be considered a very effective weapon.

Unless, of course, it can be mastered. In that case, it becomes a fearsome evil eye.

It can corrode the heart, impacting not only judgment but also self-esteem. This in turn can increase the target's dependence on others, causing them to exhibit a number of effects similar to suggestion or hypnosis, such as forcing them to carry out a command.

Swallowed by the rage from having witnessed such a tragedy, Tsubasa allowed herself to fall victim to her opponent's gaze, causing a seal to be carved deep into her heart.

Said seal is exploitable not only by the one who placed it, but also third parties. Using a trigger phrase, it is easy to seize control of her consciousness.

And now, the one using that trigger is the heretic Kazanari Fudou himself.

This seemed clear enough, at least the control aspect of it, but it’s still nice to know officially in more detail.

So basically, Carol teams up with everyone to destroy the Divine Power. Hibiki is still hurt so she can’t exactly help them do it.

It cuts to Noble Red getting replenishment of blood from Fudo and of course he’s still...Fudo. Lol. But as it says in the keywords about Miku (Miku literally gets her own keyword), Fudo is the one that ordered them to bring her back along with Elfnein.

It’s stated that the information about her being a potential vessel was found out during the breach, so he made a last minute choice to use her as the vessel instead.

He still believes the power will be his though, but have no idea how he’ll actually get it. But his second sentence is referring to Hibiki, as she is considered the god-slayer. I assume he said that in terms of...using Miku as a vessel, because Hibiki wouldn’t want to fight her of course so she can’t destroy the divine power.

But who knows, it could be about something else outside of that. Can’t say for certain.

So, all the Gear users choose to head out to try and activate the Chateau by singing their Zesshou’s to gather Phonic Gain. It originally didn’t work, and the Chateau just wasn’t reacting to their Phonic Gain. In the meantime, Carol ends up getting attacked by Noble Red again.

They try to win against her by summoning their Daedalus End/Labyrinth against her, trapping her there. However, it literally takes no time for Carol to break free from the trap, breaking the labyrinth and reducing it as useless.

She sang to get free, which as she has claimed back in GX, is literally:

more powerful than seven billion climax songs. Lol. So thanks to that, Carol single-handedly produced enough Phonic Gain for Tsubasa and the others to gain enough to use their X-Drives.

And with that, they began their assault on the manifestation of the divine power, actually managing to get a good amount of damage onto it. But of course, just like before, it can heal itself on every dimension, so the damage doesn’t last long.

What’s a small little random tidbit I liked was that everyone’s pendants are big/wide now, like how Hibiki’s has been in each season when in her X-Drive form.

There are better closeups than this one but it’s with all them together so yeah. ^^

Also, come to find out that Fudo tainted Noble Red’s blood supply. This seems to be the moment he chooses to betray and cast them aside. Frankly, I think Noble Red knew they couldn’t exactly trust Fudo, but he was actually giving them blood for who knows how long since “saving them”. I didn’t mention the earlier scene they were talking to him, but they were asking about him giving them time to get back to being human but he immediately ends the call in the middle of Vanessa’s plea.

Clearly no one is safe from being betrayed by him. His entire role in this is still up in the air though, and I’m not even sure how he’s going to use the “Stained Glance” on Tsubasa to his advantage. Guess we can only wait and see.

After this, this is where things start getting crazy. They begin playing FINAL COMMANDER again, and they all begin fighting. They couldn’t activate the Chateau, but use their X-Drives to fight instead.

Once again, the damage they manage to do is reduced due to the divine power regenerating, and so, they end up sending Hibiki back into the battle.

This is due to her being stubborn and not wanting to rest basically. Hibiki’s been dreaming about Miku ever since she’s been knocked out and the last one she had was showing Miku being pulled away from her, Hibiki reaching out in fear that Miku was leaving her. And so;

I love her haha.

Moving on, this next part is literally too much to write about. I feel like it’s a scene that needs to be seen and heard because good lord was it amazing. I don’t know how to describe how it made me feel.

With FINAL COMMANDER playing in the background, you literally have everyone trying their best to protect Hibiki; taking hits for her, doing attacks to protect her from incoming projectiles, help guiding her closer and closer to the divine power. It was just great teamwork and something that just shows how far they’ve all come (at least that’s the feeling I got). This is the sort of scene that takes place, once again, in episode 12, fitting of the episode normally titled after the season.

Pictures cannot capture that scene well enough and I’m tempted to just post it myself honestly so people can see what I mean, haha. BUT for now, this really poor recap will do.

I WILL say that I loved this shot of one piece of Hibiki’s headset being shot off.

Eventually, Hibiki gets close enough, but by this point, Elfnein reveals something (since she’s still in the Chateau with Miku):

This is literally seconds before Hibiki busts through to come face to face with Miku (?) herself.

And then they have...Miku going through a beautiful transformation. I didn’t talk about the other ones in depth but in terms of this one, I feel like I have to at least mention it because of the contrast and it actually being Shem-Ha.

Because what’s different here is that while she does have the vambrace on her wrist, there’s Shenshoujing as well.

The mirror behind her the entire time, showing its light against her as she’s transforming, is actually Shenshoujing. And at the end of it, the Aufwachen Waveform for SSJ shows.

One thing I didn’t mention, simply because I didn’t realize until this past Saturday, was back in episode 6 of XV, they actually showed Shenshoujing on screen. Vanessa was using it, I believe, as a means to keep the vambrace of Shem-Ha in check with its large quantity of power. She was also placing these “stones” around the vambrace as well. It very well could be that those stones were actual pieces of Shenshoujing but we can’t say yet.

All I know for sure is that she had SSJ pulled up on her ipad/tablet thing while she was setting everything up for once Elfnein and Miku got there.

But really, all this proves is that everyone was too late. Hibiki reaches out to Miku of course, calling out her name, only for her to respond with this:

And it just ends like that. Lol. BUT WHAT THEY CHOOSE TO DO IN THE CREDITS INSTEAD OF JUST A BLACK SCREEN IS JUST...SPAM EVERYONE WITH HIBIKI/MIKU MOMENTS LOL.

And from each season! I admit, I am a bum and got upset about this because...they’re just hammering it in. Everything was pretty much building to this moment. Ever since they hinted to Miku being a possible vessel at the end of AXZ, it was really only a matter of time that she’d be forced to have it as well and be used to fight against Hibiki, who’s the god-killer/slayer.

Of course...Hibiki wouldn’t want to use that ability against Miku, she’d want to save her. But what can they all do in order to free Miku from all this? There’s no telling. I feel like this is the moment where things really start getting more intense.

And that’s crazy to say since this whole season has been pretty crazy so far. But with this episode being titled “XV” and all this shizz happened already, I can’t even imagine what they have planned for the last 5.

I really don’t even know how to process this episode in words, since I didn’t know how to after watching the episode.

There’s just....yeah FFFFF.

One sad thing I will say is that they all fought SO HARD to help save Miku. Hibiki even pushed herself out of bed, saying “damn” to all her injuries, and goes out there. But in the end, they were just too late....and that makes me hurt a bit haha. As to why, like before, Hibiki’s expression when she sees Miku is just that more heartbreaking. I can’t imagine everyone else’s reaction too, which I’m sure we’ll see next episode.

Okay I think I’m done. I don’t think this one was as long, or in-depth, as the others because it was either information we already knew or just some good action scenes that are much better to be seen outside of pictures.

Next week cannot come any faster.)

Episode Reviews - Star Trek: The Next Generation Season 3 (1 of 6)

Capitalising on my last day of a break from my novel-writing efforts, I’m getting a start on episode reviews for the third season for Star Trek: The Next Generation now, so as to tide you all over until next weekend.

Episode 1: Evolution

Plot (as adapted from Wikipedia):

The Enterprise approaches the Kavis Alpha binary star system to perform an astrophysics experiment led by Dr Paul Stubbs, analysing the decay of neutronium as a result of a stellar explosion that occurs every 196 years and is due to occur in the next few hours. Stubbs plans to launch a probe, dubbed the Egg, to gather the data, a result of a lifetime's development. Meanwhile, Chief Medical Officer Dr Crusher has returned to her duties on the Enterprise after a tour of duty at Starfleet Medical.

As the expected time of the stellar explosion nears, the ship beings to malfunction, and the issue is traced to the computer core. Acting Ensign Wesley Crusher, who had been working on a project involving microscopic nanites, realizes that he may have inadvertently let two nanites from his experiments loose. The nanites were programmed to find ways to work together and may have evolved as a result. A scan of the computer core reveals that the nanites have replicated themselves and have taken up residence in the computer core. With the computer controls unreliable, the crew and Dr Stubbs attempt to see if they can remove the nanites from the core. However, Dr Stubbs shoots the core with a burst of gamma radiation, destroying a large number of the nanites. They retaliate by flooding the bridge with nitrogen dioxide, which the crew overrides.

Dr Stubbs is confined to quarters, but the nanites attempt further revenge by shocking him with electricity. Captain Picard prepares to flood the computer core with gamma radiation to remove the nanites completely, but the android Second Officer Lt. Commander Data establishes communication with the nanites and allows them to use his body to speak with Picard. Picard realizes that the nanites are self-aware and conscious and took Dr Stubbs' actions as hostile, but they want peace. Picard negotiates a deal to send the nanites to Kavis Alpha IV, designating it as their homeworld with Dr Stubbs’ assistance. The nanites agree and repair the damage to the computer core before they leave it. Dr Stubbs launches his probe on time and collects numerous volumes of data.

Review:

There are a few notable changes in the show’s line-up; Worf has gone up from a lower grade of lieutenant to a higher one while Geordi is now a Lieutenant Commander, putting him up to the same rank as Data. Gates McFadden is now back as Dr Beverley Crusher, and as a result the supposedly McCoy-esque Dr Poklaski character is gone, along with head writer Maurice Hurley, who is believed to have been behind Gates’ departure back at the end of season 1. Finally, the uniforms have undergone a change in design and material that was apparently requested by Patrick Stewart.

This episode is better than either of the previous two season openers TNG has offered up, though it’s not as good as it could be. Apparently when Michael Pillar took over as head writer early in this season, he insisted every episode focus primarily on one character and be about something. By that criteria, we get a focus of sorts in Wesley, and we get to see that not only is he struggling to measure up to all the demands placed on him as student and acting officer, but we also see something of what over-dedication could do to Wesley through the analogue of guest character Dr Stubbs. However, the nano-technology thread detracts from effective exploration of either issue.

To make this episode truly brilliant, I think they should have either built up to Wesley letting the nanites out in error more and focused on his struggling to juggle his responsibilities and his mother’s concerns about that, or they should have focused on creating more parallels between Wesley and Stubbs to be explored. In essence, this episode is evidence that Pillar’s approach was very much in its infancy at that point and was not well developed yet. However, it does improve down the line, and the closing scene in Ten-Forward between Beverley and Guinan is superb. Overall, I’d give this episode 8 out of 10.

Episode 2: The Ensigns of Commands

Plot (as adapted from Wikipedia):

The Enterprise receives an automated message from the enigmatic Sheliak: Remove the humans on planet Tau Cygni V in four days. The Sheliak are a non-humanoid species with little regard for human life and would exterminate any humans found in their path. Their message is only due to their obligation under a treaty with the Federation to notify their intention to colonize before taking further action.

There is no record of a Federation colony ship being sent there as it contains levels of hyperonic radiation lethal to humans, which doesn't explain why the Sheliak indicate otherwise. The Enterprise arrives in the system to find what looks to be a small colony on the surface. The android Second Officer, Lt. Commander Data takes a shuttlecraft to the planet to coordinate the evacuation as he is the only crewmember unaffected by the radiation. Once he arrives, he finds that the sensor readings were incorrect. He is informed by locals Haritath and Kentor that it is a colony of 15,253 people, the descendants of the wayward colony ship Artemis launched 92 years prior. The colonists' ancestors found a means to survive within the radiation but initially suffered heavy loss of life before an effective defence was found.

Although it would normally be a simple matter of beaming the colonists off the planet, hyperonic radiation renders the transporters useless. Because of this, a complete evacuation of the planet would take an estimated three weeks as no dedicated transport ships are available until then, and the Sheliak are not willing to give the Federation any extra time beyond the three days required by the treaty.

After explaining the situation and being rebuffed by the colony's leader, Gosheven, Data is befriended by a sympathetic colonist named Ard'rian. She expresses interest in Data as an android and invites Data to her home, where they discuss ways to persuade the colonists to evacuate. To his puzzlement Ard'rian kisses Data. Data explains to the colonists that they should evacuate their world before its imminent destruction, pointing out by reverse psychology that the only result of their heroic hopeless last stand will be their total annihilation. Gosheven, however, refuses to leave and insists they will protect themselves by fighting, which many of the colonists agree with.

With time running out, Captain Picard and the Enterprise crew begin poring through the 500,000-word treaty in the hopes of finding something they can use to their advantage.

At a meeting at Ard'rian’s home, Data talks to several of the colonists who are thinking of leaving the doomed colony; Gosheven comes in and electrocutes Data. Data recovers and reasons that if persuasion cannot work, then intimidation through a show of force should be his next option. Modifying his phaser to work in the hyperonic atmosphere, he raids the colonists' aqueduct to prove they are helpless to defend their livelihood. When Data easily stuns the colonists guarding the aqueduct, he points out that if they can't defend against a single person with a phaser, then they aren't capable of fighting the hundreds of Sheliak, who would likely destroy them via orbital bombardment. Data then sends a phaser charge up the aqueduct system to vaporise the water that is vital to the colony's survival, convincing the colonists to evacuate the world. Gosheven reluctantly relents.

Back on the Enterprise, Picard exploits a loophole in the treaty. He invokes a section calling for third-party arbitration to resolve the dispute and names as arbitrators the Grizzelas, a species that is in its hibernation cycle for another six months. Picard offers the Sheliak a choice: wait six months for the Grizzelas to come out of hibernation, or give the Federation three weeks to evacuate the colony. Ultimately, the Sheliak give the Federation the three weeks.

Just as Data is about to leave the colony in his shuttle, Ard'rian comes to say goodbye. She asks Data if he has any feeling over what has just happened, and Data explains that he cannot experience feelings. To her surprise, He then kisses Ard'rian. She remarks that he "realized" she needed a kiss; Data leaves Ard'rian and returns to the Enterprise.

Aboard the Enterprise, Picard comments on Data's performance at a classical concert before his mission with the human colonists. Picard tells Data he performed with feeling, and Data reminds Picard that he has no feeling. Picard says that this is hard to believe, noting his fusion of two very different music styles in his performance suggests real creativity. At that, and in obvious reflection of his recent solution of the colony problem, Data concedes that he has become more creative when necessary.

Review:

It’s taken me reading through Memory Alpha’s notes on this episode to get any idea of what this episode’s title means. Apparently, it’s taken from a poem by John Quincey Adams and talks about ensigns as in flags or symbols rather than the officer rank used in TNG. However, this episode is focusing more on Data struggling with how to take command when his lack of emotion hinders him. That has nothing to do with flags or symbols, so for me the episode feels completely mis-labelled. I think the writers should have worked longer and harder to find a more literal title and not picked a random line from a bloody poem (I, for one, find poetry to be largely intolerable; just a bunch of bad song lyrics no one could be arsed to put to music in the vast majority of cases where I’m concerned).

That aside, this is a decent episode that does well to show Data having to cope in a situation a bit outside his comfort zone, while Picard and company do well to support the main story in their contributions to the episode. It’s also a good episode about not only the merits of playing on people’s emotions and actions often having more impact than words, not to mention the importance of putting lives above places and possessions in crisis situations. I also don’t much mind that Goshoven’s prejudice against Data isn’t better explored, since that would have just repeated ‘Measure of a Man’ from last season, and that wouldn’t add anything to the show as a whole, nor to this episode in particular. Overall, I give it 9 out of 10.

Episode 3: The Survivors

Plot (as adapted from Wikipedia):

The Enterprise responds to a distress call from a Federation colony on Delta Rana IV and discovers the planet to be devastated and devoid of life, save for a patch of land containing a house and vegetation. Transporting to the surface, the away team meets the human occupants of the house, Kevin and Rishon Uxbridge, who claim to have witnessed the attack that destroyed the colony, but are unaware that they are the only survivors. The team, finding nothing of interest save for a small music box, insists that the Uxbridges return to the Enterprise for safety, but they refuse. Aboard the Enterprise, Counsellor Troi begins to hear the music from the music box in her mind constantly, each repetition slightly louder than the last, which eventually reduces her to screaming hysterics. Dr Crusher is forced to place her in an induced coma.

An unknown spacecraft appears and attacks the Enterprise, then flees. The Enterprise gives chase but is unable to overtake the spaceship; eventually Captain Picard orders the Enterprise to return to the planet. Picard transports to the surface personally; Kevin suggests they were spared because they are pacifists. Upon the away team's return, the spaceship appears in orbit again, this time delivering a far more powerful attack. Picard orders the Enterprise to leave the system first, but then begins to suspect that the crew is being toyed with.

Returning to the planet again, Picard transports to the surface to plead with the Uxbridges to leave with him. After being refused again, Picard tells them the Enterprise will remain to protect them as long as they live, and returns to the ship. The alien spaceship appears again and destroys the Uxbridges' home. Picard orders an attack on the craft, and unlike the previous encounters, easily destroys it. Playing on a suspicion, Picard has the Enterprise move to a higher orbit; after a short time, the Uxbridges' home reappears.

Picard orders the Uxbridges beamed up to the Enterprise and confronts Kevin with his suspicions: Kevin and Rishon's house was destroyed in the attack and Rishon was killed, but Kevin, who is not human, has recreated them both, and created the alien warship to dissuade the Enterprise from investigating. Kevin admits the truth, and the illusory Rishon disappears. He removes the torturous music that he had placed in Troi's mind to prevent her from telepathically identifying him.

Kevin reveals that he is a Douwd, an immortal energy being with vast powers, who fell in love with Rishon and settled with her on Rana IV. When the planet was attacked by an aggressive, destructive species called the Husnock, he refused to join the fight in accordance with his species' pacifism. Rishon, however, died defending the colony. Stricken with grief, Kevin lashed out with his vast powers and wiped out the entire Husnock species; over 50 billion. Horrified by his crime, he chose self-exile to the planet, creating the replicas of Rishon and their house to spend the rest of eternity. Picard states that they are not qualified to be his judges, having no laws to fit the magnitude of his crime. The Enterprise leaves Kevin and his illusion in peace, and Picard confirms he will issue a warning not to visit the planet. Picard later opines in his log that a being as powerful and conscientious as Kevin is best left alone.

Review:

This is an interesting mystery episode that seems to focus primarily on Picard, since he works out the mystery fairly quickly but then keeps the solution, or at least his part of it, unrevealed until much later. However, once again the idiocy of Roddenberry rears its head, as according to an episode commentary I watched on a later episode in this round, 24th century humans supposedly weren’t meant to get angry at anything in Roddenberry’s mind. This is a stupid idea that is totally unbelievable, and as a result no one objects to Picard’s apparent sacrifice of the Uxbridges. No one but Picard has apparently deduced they’re dealing with illusions of a kind, so surely someone should have questioned the captain’s actions.

This is a clear-cut example of why Roddenberry becoming less involved during this season and eventually leaving Trek was a fundamental necessity for the franchise’s long-term survival. To believe that humans, that any species, could ever lose such an integral and necessary emotion as anger, or that losing our anger is somehow a desirable evolutionary path, is simply idiotic. The fact that suppressing human emotion was the subject of a dystopian film like Equilibrium is also proof of this, as the dystopian emotion-suppressing regime is total collapse by that film’s end and rightly so.

However, there’s not much issue exploration in this episode. The mystery, when revealed, turns out to be Trek doing its own version of what Chris Claremont did in X-Men comics with the Dark Phoenix saga, but since the cosmically powered being going too far in moments of overwhelming need or emotion is just a guest character, it lacks the same sort of resonance. The bottom line is this episode shows that despite the quality of the season’s first two episodes, TNG had yet to fully abandon its errors of the first two seasons. I also absolutely loathed Troi’s hysteria performance and had to fast-forward it. On balance, I’d give this episode 5 out of 10.

Episode 4: Who Watches The Watchers

Plot (as adapted from Wikipedia):

The Enterprise travels to the planet Mintaka III to resupply and repair a Federation outpost being used to monitor the Mintakan people, a proto-Vulcan race near a Bronze Age level of cultural development.

As the Enterprise nears the outpost, an accident causes the holographic rockface to disappear, exposing the outpost to Liko, a Mintakan. Liko attempts to approach and is hit with an electrical shock, which causes him to fall off the cliff and sustain critical injuries. When Chief Medical Officer Dr Crusher rushes to provide aid, she realizes the injuries are too severe to treat there and has him transported to the Enterprise for treatment despite the action violating the Prime Directive. Liko becomes conscious and witnesses everything occurring in Sick Bay, and focuses on Captain Picard giving instructions. Dr Crusher is able to heal Liko and attempts to wipe his memory of the incident before returning him to the planet. Commander Riker suggests that he and Counsellor Troi disguise themselves as Mintakans in order to search for Palmer, a missing member of the anthropological team, and to monitor Liko, to make sure the memory wipe worked. They discover to their horror that the mind wipe did not take, as Liko recalls an image of "the Picard", and has convinced other Mintakans that the Picard must be their god.

Troi and Riker subtly try to dispel the myth of the Picard, which gains traction until a hunting party arrives with a delirious Palmer in tow. While Troi provides a diversion, telling the clan that another "like Palmer" is heading for the caves, Riker ties up an elderly man who was left behind to keep an eye on Palmer, and Riker and Palmer run away, and narrowly escape back to the Enterprise. Unfortunately, Troi is captured and held captive for her hand in the escape, leaving Picard to take steps to rectify the situation without further violation of the Prime Directive.

Picard transports Nuria, the leader of the village where Troi is being held, to the Enterprise and attempts to show her that he and the rest of the crew are mortal, including having her witness the death of a member of the anthropological team in Sickbay. Picard returns with Nuria to the surface in the middle of a thunderstorm, which Liko has taken as a sign of the Picard's anger. Nuria attempts to rationalize with Liko, but Liko demands his own proof of Picard's mortality and aims an arrow at Picard. Picard insists that if that is the only proof that Liko will accept, then Liko should shoot. Liko does, but his daughter pushes him so that he only wounds Picard. Nuria shows Liko Picard's blood from the wound, and Liko and the others come to accept that Picard is not a god. Picard and Troi return to the Enterprise, and after he is treated, Picard returns to the surface one last time, and explains to the Mintakans that they will be removing the outpost and allowing them to develop on their own. Before Picard leaves, Nuria gives him a Mintakan tapestry as a gift.

Review:

This is our second Picard-centric episode on the run, and it’s much better in terms of both performance and issue exploration, not to mention emotional expression. Moreover, it’s another chance to explore and debate that classic Trek chestnut known as the Prime Directive, which this time is broken by accident when it would obviously have been better to avoid that situation, and thereafter the issue becomes how best to resolve it. As someone who thinks all religions are best treated as theories until proven or disproven by science (which in real life science cannot yet achieve), I enjoyed this because it honestly tries to look at the issue from both sides, albeit not for long.

The episode explores the idea of an advanced race appearing god-like to a less advanced civilisation, which in more recent times has been utilised to work Thor and the Asgardian race into Marvel’s film in a sci-fi way rather than as beings of mystic fantasy, and also points out the inherent flaw in all religions. Basically, once our guest aliens start believing in Picard as a god, they’re almost constantly trying to work out what do, and as Troi points out, “that’s the problem with believing in a supernatural being; trying to work out what he wants.” This is where all religions fall down, because by and large that supernatural being never appears, never communicates directly, so you have no reliable, impartial means by which to determine if what ‘God’, ‘Allah’, ‘Zeus’, ‘Odin’ or whoever wants you to do has or hasn’t been done.

The guest character of Dr Barron even suggests that to minimise the damage caused by the Prime Directive being violated, Picard actually step into that supernatural being role and impose commandments so that the potential religion goes in a positive direction, but Picard shoots the idea down. He sees the abandoning of religion as an achievement, and to a degree I see his point of view. A lot of our history’s worst moments have been born out of misinterpreting or misusing religion as an excuse for wars, bigotry, inquisitions, etc. and that’s even when there are commandments built into a religion. The reality is that while religion can have its positive elements, it is ultimately through secular morality that isn’t based on abstract that a society is more likely to progress and thrive.

For me, this is a great episode and another example of Trek at its finest. I give it top marks because it really doesn’t put a foot wrong; 10 out of 10.

Episode 5: The Bonding

Plot (as adapted from Wikipedia):

While investigating a planet once occupied by Koinonians, Lt. Worf and members of the Enterprise away team trigger an ancient mine. They are transported to Sickbay, but Lieutenant Marla Aster is dead. As Captain Picard delivers the news of Marla's death to her son Jeremy, Wesley Crusher talks with Commander Riker about how Picard had delivered the news of his father's death to his mother and himself. Worf expresses his desire to make R'uustai, a Klingon bonding ritual with Jeremy, as they are both orphans and he believes he can help the boy recover emotionally, but Counsellor Troi warns that Jeremy may react badly if Worf makes such an offer too soon.

The crew investigates the planet, discovering mines that were recently unearthed and exposed. They observe a beam of charged particles emanating from the surface headed towards the Enterprise, while Troi senses a new presence from the planet. In Jeremy's quarters, a physical manifestation of Marla appears, explaining that the crew mistakenly considered her dead and that she wants Jeremy to live on the planet. Worf and security officers follow the two, preventing "Marla" from using the transporter to return to the planet, and Troi and Picard also intervene. Troi and Jeremy return to the Aster family quarters, which has the appearance of the Asters' home on Earth. Chief Engineer La Forge tunes the shields to stop the particle beam, causing "Marla" to disappear and the room returns to normal.

A filament rises from the planet, striking the Enterprise and disrupting the shields; "Marla" appears and takes Jeremy, intent on going to the transporter room. Picard contains "Marla" with force fields and talks to her. "Marla" explains that she is one of two races that once lived on the planet; her species, made from energy, watched the other physical species wipe themselves out from wars and her people want to prevent more suffering caused by the remnants of the war, thus providing Jeremy with the illusion of his mother still being alive. Picard and Troi point out that dealing with death is part of the human condition. Wesley explains to Jeremy how he dealt with his father's death, explaining he was initially angry with Picard for living while his father died. Jeremy expresses his own anger at Worf, but Troi points out they are both orphans, while Worf notes that he was aided by humans after he lost his parents. Jeremy decides to go with Worf. Realizing that Jeremy will be all right, the illusion of Marla disappears and the alien presence is no more.

Sometime later, Worf and Jeremy undertake the R'uustai ritual.

Review:

This is the episode I was talking about earlier where I checked out the commentary and discovered yet more example of how idiotic some of Roddenberry’s idealism got. The episode is very much centred around the necessity of grieving for those we lose to death and how we go through that, and Roddenberry apparently didn’t want the affected child in this episode getting angry, part of which was down to this idea that 24th century humans just don’t get angry. The other part was that he thought the humans of this time period would be taught to accept death from an early age, and as such there would be no inter-personal conflict as a result of someone losing anyone close to them.

Frankly, that’s about the most inhuman concept I could imagine, because having experienced the loss of all my grandparents to various causes, most of which allowed for some preparation time, I can attest to this being the worst idea imaginable. Nothing is ever going to prepare you to lose someone close to you, and no amount of time or human advancement will ever make accepting death any easier. Luckily, the re-writes on the show’s original script nicely bypass Roddenberry’s filters and keep the natural emotions of grieving in there; they just lay beneath the surface of most of the affected characters because everyone’s basically repressing them, and there’s a kind of gentle catharsis for everyone in the final act.

It’s also an episode where I feel the intended and actual focus of the story are different. This was apparently meant to be a Worf story, but so much focus is put on the guest characters, not to mention Troi, Picard and Wesley, that it doesn’t really seem like Worf ends up really being the true focal point at all. However, it’s interesting to see how all these characters make worthwhile contributions to the subject at hand. Wesley and Worf have both been through the same kind of thing Jeremy has experienced, Troi is brilliant acting as counsellor and helping everyone out (this is how she should be in more of her own episodes), and then you’ve got Picard not only struggling with this terrible duty, but also with the question of ‘why do we let families on this ship?’

The last point is one that I think many people will find puzzling about TNG’s Enterprise; it’s a Federation ship, the Starfleet flagship at that, and we’ve seen by now how much danger it can encounter. As such, Picard has the right idea in noting how dubious a decision it is to have families, to have children and non-Starfleet adults, aboard a ship of exploration when it’s constantly risking the unknown and the potential perils that lurk therein. It’s notable that later shows, and even all TNG films after Generations, removed the family ship concept. We also get Data making some quite relevant queries and observations in a scene with Riker, so almost all the crew get their moment to comment, with only Geordi missing out from the main cast in terms of the focal issue.

However, overall, it’s a brilliant episode, and a great testament to the wisdom of Michael Piller. Another thing he did as head writer was to open the door to spec scripts, which were scripts submitted by the general public. This enabled Trek fans and unestablished writers to make contributions and, in some cases, to get on the Trek shows. Melissa Snodgrass’ script for ‘Measure of a Man’ was an early example of a spec script being used, and this one came courtesy of Ronald D. Moore, who ended up becoming a staff writer on the Trek shows for a decade after a few spec script successes. If you can get this quality of Trek by taking on unsolicited fan scripts rather than using established TV writers who have little understanding of the franchise, then I think a lot of other franchises need to tap their fan-base in the same way. All in all, I give this episode 10 out of 10.

She hadn’t had the courage to say anything at the time, but it had haunted her thoughts ever since. Making it worse, when she’d attempted to find her mother to ask her for her advice, she hadn’t been able to find her anywhere, so she’d wound up simply spending the previous night with Marie.

It wasn’t right. The fighting was over and peace had been won, but even when he should have been relaxing with his friends, Alto was still wearing the same guarded, strained expression. It was the same heart-breaking look she’d seen from her friend all throughout their battles, at all the times she’d stood at his die, watching him make the most difficult decisions of his life.

Because, she knew Alto. And she knew, for him, that it had never been about the battles. He didn’t fear fighting, he would recklessly throw himself into danger without even a second’s thought if it meant he could help someone. As she’d told him so many times, his overwhelming compassion was both his best and worst trait. He was courageous to the point of stupidity, all he cared about was protecting the people important to him, keeping the people he loved safe and happy, as best he could. That was all the fighting had ever meant to him. And that was why she’d always known it couldn’t possibly be that easy for him.

Perhaps that was the worst part of all. The more she thought about it, the more she was starting to realise just what an impossible situation their feelings and expectations had put Alto into. She knew better than anyone just how much he cared for each of them, she’d healed the scars on his body time and again that showed just how far he’d go to protect any of them… And yet, without ever really thinking how, they were all still asking him to then choose between them, to decide which of his Witches he loved the most.

And, she couldn’t help him at all, could barely even support him in what must be an incredibly painful choice for him. All she could do was leave it to him, and trust that when he did choose, that he felt the same way about her as she did about him and they would finally be together. As for the rest… She didn’t know… The thought of him choosing one of the others over her was almost too painful, to terrifying to consider, but the knowledge that her friends would have to go through that was no less terrible…

Kardashian Dreaming

Had the coolest/most bizarre dream ever.

I was seated at this meeting with Mama Kris Jenner, Rob was there and prolly the other family members, I can’t remember. And she was gonna hire me or wanted to hire me, and it was an interview or something am not so sure. But basically my role was to hang around the whole Kardashian-Jenner clan, be on the prowl on the stuff they do, find research backing up evidence that what they do is effective by science (but way better than David Avocado Wolfe levels, more classier and actually backed up by a medical doctor (hello, me!), and yes, blog about it.

Or ghost write articles whatever floats my boat. Basically tag along with them, maybe occasionally take their pics for Instagram/Snapchat as to back up the article I wrote or blogged, but not in a PA kind of way. I’m more like just like a third party observer, I am to be treated cordially and kindly, not like staff, whom I don’t like as some are bossy, snobby divas (must be competition syndrome who knows?).

I don’t get to be on the show either (Thank God, I wasn’t the type who wanted that sort of attention to begin with), but as a fan of the series, it’s a treat that I get a full-depth view of what goes on in the family for real and ahead from what’s aired on E!, way before everyone else gets to see it (of course I have a disclosure clause tho I can write anything, as long as Mama Jenner approves of the topic of course, like I report directly to her anyway and she does keep direct tabs with me on the stuff that I write).

Well, anyway, going back to the story: Then Kris goes for the jugular and looks me in the eye and says “we pay higher than 500 per hour”, kinda making me know she’s done her homework about me and that whatever I’m currently being paid for at my current job, she’s willing to pay me higher (lol. 600 maybe?) and before y’all start thinking, I knew deep down Mama Kris meant she was gonna pay me at least 600 US Dollars per hour just to “keep up with them”, and I had a fixed schedule of reporting 3-4x a week at least four hours to a maximum of 8 hours a day, as for specifics on time well, if there are evening events and if I’m free, I can go and would be paid double for night differential. All of which was pretty ok by me.

I learned in my 90 minute snooze that the Kardashian clan are actually pretty generous employers. Like you got free range around the house (of course you can’t enter the private rooms unless you’re invited by the owner to go in and there are CCTVs so they do know when PAs steal their stuff), you can eat whatever food is in the pantry (except stuff that’s labeled with the names of the girls if they’re saving it for later, like Kim writes her name on it labeled as “Kim” or “Kiki”, Kourtney uses a green tape label so you know it’s hers, shit this dream is so detailed, it was beyond!!!

Anyway, so I get the job yo’. I’m hanging out with Kanye West. He’s not even scary. He’s actually very nice and polite, not like the angry dude you always see on the telly.

So he’s going about talking being drawn to different kinds of wall graffitis (I swear I had no idea there were even types to begin with! Shit there it is on google, people I am just typing this website and googling it down now because I thought that dream was just crack but fuuuucccck nnnhhooo!!!) and showed me this wall written with words like yeezy (yes written in bold with no caps on the first “y”) and a quote, I can’t remember but I know it was a cool quote about believing in yourself and pretty profound one at that. It took me a while to realize while talking to this man that he was in the process of making his own font!! People, Kanye West was designing his own fucking Times New Roman y’all!!! Prolly use the letterings to put it on his shirts, on his album, have it sold on Microsoft Office or whatnot, this shit is superb I simply cannot!!!. It wasn’t a useless font, it’s like a relatable font that could be used for making a slogan, a poster, or heck even as a document paper if you don’t mind wasting some ink on the printer.

It was super genius, I tell you. I remember giving him feedback about it (because he asked me, that’s how cool the ‘Ye is, he gets feedback from the masses coz he wants to understand the common people!) that I liked the design on the wall except if I stood at a certain distance, I couldn’t read the first word written on top (I can’t believe I had the nerve to talk up to the ‘Ye) but he was super cool about it and admitted he hadn’t thought about that but was “going with the creative flow” when he was in the moment and having an artistic flair myself, I understood where he was coming from.

Next I’m in the gym. Now I’m pretty certain this is recent, I cannot confirm if Khloe is pregnant but she sure wasn’t working out either.

Out of the Kardashian sisters, she’s the one I genuinely get along with the best. She even calls me by my first name Kristina, opting not to address me by my middle name which Kris and Kim do as I didn’t want to confuse myself into sharing a nickname similar to my new boss (aka Mama KJ). I dunno but I clicked best with Khloe and could honestly imagine that IRL we could be really good pals. She does have one interesting habit: she always has to turn off the lights when not in use.

It’s weird because you think one: these people are ridiculously rich but are stingy with electricity? Two, shouldn’t the Kardashian/Jenner fam invest in motion sensor lights? And Three: according to Khloe, she started getting back into this habit to reduce energy in lieu of Climate Change (of course), and it used to be the one reminder her dad, the late Robert Kardashian Sr always made her do because, like me, she had a habit of leaving the lights on too.

So basically included on my job description was yep, turn off the lights each time I went out of a room or check if there are unused lights.

So one time I’m in the family gym, and Kim was there. Now out of all the Kardashian/Jenners (don’t tell Khloe ok, ORZ) Kim is my favourite. IRL she’s not tall, prolly around my height, but has a doll-face and is really curvy but small in the areas that matter. TBH Kim leaves me star-struck, very Kween- like: regal, formal, never losing her shit (unlike me the whole freaking dream sequence) but still approachable and likeable.

Out of all the Kardashian/Jenners, Kim is the most like Kris. Like literally Mama’s carbon copy, even in some mannerisms, except Kim is more reserved, polite, but still approachable without being intimidating, which that part is mostly like her Mom. Though Kim can be intimidating in a different way. Let’s just say both women have that Alpha air about them.

Kris Jenner is all business and is the the Queen Mom, kinda like my boss so it’s ironic I leave a job only to be hired by someone who resembles a lot of qualities similar to the former boss. But who can deny BIGGER and BETTER PAY?

As for Kim, I really can’t compare her to anyone I’ve ever met, but she’s definitely got an aura of being something extraordinary. Like Celebrity vibes. That feeling one gets when you’re in the presence of someone who is gonna either change the world or bring it to its knees and end the rest of humanity, XD.

Anyway, I’m in the gym and I dunno why but there are icicles on the machines (the elliptical, the treadmill, the bikes) I don’t feel cold or anything but it I chose to ignore it prolly coz I was astonished that there were icicles on the machines and yet no one bothers to turn off the AC and plus hello, I’m watching Kimye work out a sweat or rather, breathing cold air like some friggin’ Elsa with her long platinum hair which makes me miss own on bleached Khaleesi mane too. Kim’s working on the treadmill, she gives me a polite smile and nod, and says hello, addressing me by my middle name (it’s shocking because I’ve barely been in this house or at this job for long, and already Kim knows me by name and face. It’s like an amazing talent she and Kris have, they remember faces and names of people they’ve just met, whether you’re a Royalty or a servant, they’ll remember. They’re like natural politicians!).

Khloe asks me if I could turn off the lights, which was the gym, I dim it a bit, with Kim’s permission, of course. She doesn��t mind, she’s in her own zone. Breathing out cold air probably from those iced exercise machines I dunno (I believe I found new material for my writing blogs that I was hired for too).

I move on to another side of the gym, which is a lounge area. I see in the corner of my eye Kourtney having a informal business meeting with a blonde long-haired Japanese business dude who gives me Steve Aoki vibes, a translator (who is my friend Aira), and a bunch of other peeps lounging on sofas. I yell over to Khloe and tell her that someone’s in the lounge room and she goes over to me and says “Oh yeah, leave the lights on.” Laughs off and walks away.

I’m not close with Kourt tho. I don’t think we have bad vibes or anything, actually we’re the same age, it’s just Kourt and I never had a chance to bond because her top priority are her kids and we just never had time to chitchat, but I think she’s just as nice as the rest of the family, probably even more casual than Kim, but less chummy as Khloe. She did mention once that I’m a natural with kids even though I never baby sat any of the Kardashian kids, but they’re really sweet and they seem to like me well enough.

I’ve interacted with Mason, Reign, and Penny; they’re the sweetest kids, Reign and Penny always greet me with hugs, they’re super friendly. Mason’s already a big boy, so hugs are not in order and he’s usually somewhere off doing his own thing or hanging out with Scott aka The Lord (who doesn’t seem like the douchebag he’s normally portrayed as in the show). I’ve met North and Saint briefly as Kim was in a hurry, North’s a bit shy, she’s got the cutest smile tho. I just don’t think North warms up to people as easily as compared to Kourtney’s kids do tho. Saint is adorable, as expected, but it’s too early to tell how he’s gonna be when he’s older, but he’s so darn cute. Saint reminds me of this kid of a friend of mine who was just about the cutest darnest little kid whom I preferred to babysit over his naughty older brother, Andrei, hahaha!

And as for the Kardashian-Jenner girls. Well, all I can say is Kendall is by far the tallest and prettiest sister and has got the most amazing legs, but she’s moody as f tho. Like let’s say she’d walk in a room I was in, she’d ignore me (unless I’d be the first one to greet her, then she’d respond with a bored hi or mumble something close to it) then Ken would do her own thing like sit on a corner of a table or lounge on a couch and interact with her sisters but mostly looks bored as if she’d rather be somewhere else more interesting than at home, which is kinda disappointing since I’m a huge fan of hers, but I get her deal. She grew up into the whole limelight and unlike her older sisters, she never wanted any of it and if you asked her, she’d probably wish she was living a rather normal life. Plus the bad bitterness she has as a model and having to prove to everyone she’s a supermodel because people hate on her for the nepotism even though she really does work hard. Basically Kendall is the Kuudere of the Kardashian/Jenner girls. So I get her deal. But compared to Kun-Kuun Kenny, Kylie is more like the typical teen/Generation Z/late Millenial: Always on her phone, not really in tune with anything going on about in the house. I like Jordyn Woods tho, she’s really friendly and warm that you don’t get an air vibe out of her, like she’s genuinely a nice girl that you’re glad she’s there for Kylie. Maybe that’s the reason why Kylie’s got a lot more mellow than her older sister Kendall, since Kendall doesn’t have that sort of friendship from what I’ve seen based on that whole dynamic I’ve gathered in that 90 minute dream.

mother! (17, B-)

Who here can say they knew what they were getting into when they went to see mother!? Maybe you went to see it after it premiered, and after you saw that polarizing responses to it, the mystification and adoration and all of the outright vitriol. The sheer variety of opinions about it is fascinating, and drew a few friends to it, but I went with Tommy the Thursday before its wide release debut, drawn as we were by the savvy marketing. Horror aficionados that we are, we had no idea what the plot could even be but were drawn by the sheer spectacle that the trailers were promising us. Don’t the trailers make it look like a home invasion thriller, where Ed Harris and Michelle Pfeiffer invade the home of this couple living in the middle of nowhere to use them for some satanic ritual? Doesn’t it also look like Javier Bardem may be in on the joke, and that everything seems to be putting Jennifer Lawrence in peril? The Rosemary’s Baby illusions in the marketing certainly give that impression, and I know more than a few people who expected to see Cult Leader Michelle Pfeiffer, going full Ruth Gordon on this nonsense. What we ended up getting is much messier, much weirder, much more abrasive. I’m going to write this out as though you, too, have seen mother!, and are eager for yet another hot take on what this whole thing is an allegory for. Yes, it’s about religion, but how exclusively is it that? How much does Darren Aronofsky and Jennifer Lawrence’s preaching about what their film is about actually matter? It’s amazing that an object this blunt can be so prismatic at the same time. To paraphrase Bardem’s poet, “They all understand it, but each one is interpreting it in their own way”, and that may be the most fascinating thing mother! has going for it. mother! isn’t kind to its characters or its audience, but it’s spontaneous and committed to its own mad rhythm, firmly placing us in the headspace of its central character as she battles against all forms of bullying intruders. mother! is probably the film of 2017 that’s most aggressive to audience sensibilities while also offering a very vicious portrait of that same audience, as well as the figures who make these art objects we’re so ravenous for, and the people who are both idolized and nullified by their support of those figures.

The first thing we see in mother! is a young woman englufed in flames, shedding a single tear, followed by Javier Bardem putting a glass object on a pedestal, and he gleefully watches his house reform as a different young woman solidifies into being with the rest of the house. This scene carries an incredibly different context by the end of the film, but what I admire is how fully we’re experiencing the events of the film at the same pace Lawrence is from the moment she arrives onscreen. Cinematography limits itself completely to the Lawrence character’s POV while editing makes the scenes feel like they’re happening in real time, making cuts to moments even a few seconds away from where we left these characters feel somewhat jarring. You could probably count the number of shots devoid from Lawrence’s perspective on one hand, and they’re all at the beginning and ending of the film. In no time flat we’re firmly in her head, and in even quicker strokes we’re shown a straining marriage that feels as formed from thin air as this house and this woman seem to be.

If the film seems structured to put Lawrence’s character through an increasingly vicious series of confrontations and abuses, I think it’s important to establish that she isn’t exactly some blank, pliant naif. Yes, she’s initally too polite to kick out Harris and Pfeiffer once her hubby invited them to stay without her permission, but Lawrence is frankly too steely not to give this woman some kind of spine. She’s as aware as we are to the fault lines in her marriage, and it’s her silent but unmissable look that eggs Bardem into seeing who this first uninvited guest is. At every moment of this waking nightmare of a plot, Lawrence desperately fights tooth and nail to get a soul on her side, most of all the husband she palpably loves with all her being. We’re not watching ailing Mia Farrow putting up with and excusing her unbearable circumstances until pushed to her absolute limit, until the truth is staring her in the face. We’re watching a woman with much more ballast stuck with equally little agency in a world equally intent on using and abusing her. I didn’t quite believe she built her house, but I sure as shit believed these intruders better get out when she tells them too. She loves her man deeply, but you believe her ultimatums and attempts to flee once everything almost literally goes to hell. The issue here isn’t her own will but the callousness of others, and if we’re going to reduce this character to one thing, let it be her completely refusal to stand idly by while everything is snatched away by intruders when it isn’t willingly given away by her own husband.

Roughly the first two thirds of the film play as a more mundanely unsettling version of what the trailers have been promising. I doubt Ed Harris arrives more than ten minutes into the film’s run time before he starts chumming it up with Bardem. His excuse for stumbling upon them is measly, and we’re as surprised as Lawrence is by her husband’s unusual generosity towards this man. More than that, we’re wounded by his excitement in seeing a real fan and inspiration in this man when Lawrence’s only obvious goal is to help better this schlub. Harris’s character is left immensely thin by design, and I appreciate Harris himself not try to try and grab more of the film than his character necessarily deserves. By design he’s so unknowable to Lawrence and to us, but the real point of him is his relationship with Bardem. The way Bardem sparks to him, acting as though this stranger is the fount of inspiration he’s been looking for in the face of his adoring wife, winds up being an insult in itself. What else has she done beyond fix their house and tend to him however she can?

Michelle Pfeiffer’s arrival is even more bullying, in part because she seems to be the only person to interact with and interrogate Lawrence so directly, and in part because her character is the most enigmatic of the bunch. Tossing out so many questions at Lawrence while changing moods on a dime and very openly inebriated, Pfeiffer’s is in some ways the most personal of the many invasive forces that enter Lawrence’s home. Hers isn’t just the strongest personality but the one that most registers as a person, someone who could exist beyond the clockwork madness of this little yet infinite home. There’s something mournful in her goading of Lawrence into motherhood, and you wonder in that last, enigmatically unsettling close up what Pfeiffer saw in her. Hell, the character suggested such a forceful personality and shrewd awareness of her surroundings I almost wondered if she was somehow outside of the ouroboros narrative engulfing the film and it’s lead characters, her farewell stare packed with the knowledge that, for one reason or another, they’d never see each other again. If she’s meant to be Eve, as so many reviews suggest she is, then it’s a deeply more complicated characterization than I could’ve expected for someone taking on that moniker in such a bluntly Biblical film.

Aronofsky is able to keep throwing his leading lady and the audience for a curve with the sheer scale of the disrespect these home invaders can throw at her. A messy, unclean kitchen and a filled-up ashtray are enough to set us off, never mind the truly unreal spectacle of a mysterious wound on the Harris character’s back and a fleshy, pink, tendriled-and-spiked thing that nearly pops out of a toilet before flying down the pipes, never to be seen again. Still, the waking dream atmosphere the film cultivates so succinctly is even better evoked by the arrival of the couple’s warring sons, and the makeshift wake for one of them only hours later that seems to have an ever-growing string of mourners to set upon and ruin her home. The inevitable fate of an unraised sink generates as much surreal anger and disbelief as the continuous and inexplicable disrespect that occurs whenever Lawrence tries to assert herself in her own home. A couple making out in her bedroom assert they won’t take long and eventually scoff when she says it’s hers; apropos of nothing, that same couple paints part of her house; another man repeatedly tries to get her number and hurls gendered insults when she tells him to go away for about the fifth time; another couple asks which way they should go to get down the stairs after being told to stay on the ground floor. Over and over, until that sink is destroyed, Lawrence is practically an unwanted and ignored presence in her own home. It’s not as though this act of destruction gives her any authority - the whole party flees because of the broken pipes, not because of her - and we’re left with just her and her useless husband to hash things out. Her attempts to stand up for herself are met with the “Life isn’t fair” card, which she hurls back in his face. The next morning, she’s pregnant, and he’s writing his magnum opus.

All of this sets the table for yet in no way prepares us for the absolute onslaught that begins once he publishes his poem nine months later. Looking as though she could give birth at any moment, Lawrence celebrates with a lavish dinner she prepared herself, insisting even now that she take care of him on this special night. Offers to help her are denied and then tentatively accepted, giving him a nothing task he immediately fails to complete as the house is set upon by paparazzi. She pleads for him to come back inside as he cannot help but feed this begging crowd with his presence as people start popping up in their house despite the locked doors and windows meant to stave off the world from entering. She tries to leave, but is barred from exiting as fans literally rip apart every piece of her house that isn’t being converted into an altar for The Poet. “Share, as The Poet says.” cries a woman as she interrupts Lawrence’s call to the police, only to huff at how rude people can be when a young man rips the phone off the wall. The outside world feels infinite as people come to steal whatever they can from the house, wanting a piece of their beloved Poet’s home as proof they met him, with his full permission, and ignoring the wails of his wife that they are not welcome.

From here, things only get worse. A line to receive psalms becomes part of a rave becomes part of a fight as police burst through the windows, shoving Lawrence heaving belly-first into a wall; a once-welcoming figure executes six people and commanding the death of Lawrence before they too are blown up; a policeman is set on fire while segments of the house seem to be taken over by Russian gangsters. The communal murder and cannibalism done to a crucial character leads to the most cathartic stabbings in film history, followed by one of its most ugly beatings, and a plea for forgiveness so pathetic and impossible the entire audience rebelled against it both times I watched it. Absolute destruction by fire is met with an act of complete (re)creation that seems vile and abusive in itself. mother! ends by repeating its first shots with one key change that implies not just impeding repetition, but a kind of actual hell that its protagonists live in and only one actually knows about. The film’s last half hour is somehow even blunter in its religious symbolism than it had previously been, doubling down in its ideological and narrative commitments.

So what does it say about this film that its tactics for evoking these ideas, and all its abuse to both its central character and the audience, have been treated with such a polarized response? I haven’t seen with anyone who was happy they saw it, and my own initial response was sheer anger on behalf of how Lawrence had been treated. I haven’t seen a contemporaneous film be that brutal to a central character or a female character in the ways that mother! is, and even pictures like Elle grant its heroine so much agency, intelligence, and perversity that we at least believe she knows what she’s doing by throwing herself into such murky waters. The whole point of the piece is Lawrence’s lack of agency or authority, the way she’s forced into the role of a spectator as her own life is torn apart. mother! is structured as an escalating torrent of abuse against its lead, not so much until the point where she flees as the point where she starts fighting back with her own scorched earth campaign to match the injustices done to her. Because we’re so crucially in her headspace the whole time, everything she suffers feels like it’s happening to us too. I wonder if audiences would be more or less outraged if the film was outside of her headspace at any point during the film, giving us a chance to breathe even while she keeps trying to endure this shitstorm. Surely mother! would be a less powerful experience if this was allowed, and certainly one that asked less of its audience by not putting them through the ringer. For all the criticism of its brutality, what would it be without this escalation, carried out by these specific techniques? It needs this dreamlike, vicious intimacy between Lawrence and the camera, and putting distance between us and her only seems more abusive if these acts against her are something to be studied rather than something to experience with her.

But what’s it all for? That’s the question everyone is asking and debating and taking for granted. Of course it’s a Biblical allegory, but there’s a strong narrative about the used and abused wives of creative geniuses intertwined with some environmentalist overtones. Take, for instance, that Mother Earth is not actually a personified character in the Bible. Lawrence herself has no actual Biblical equivalent despite the pressure from Aronofsky and Jennifer Lawrence herself that this is an environmentalist allegory embalmed in Old Testament bru-ha-ha. Pardon me for finding the urging by the creators that no, our story is only about this to be wanting, and a little dull. Maybe the narrative I’m choosing to latch on to is simply the one I’m most personally fascinated by, even more so on a metatextual sense, but if mother! gives us anything it’s a pretty scabrous story about the ways women are revered as art objects by their husbands while simultaneous denied the rights to do or be anything that cannot serve him. Bardem values her love, but only seems to care about her in moments where she threatens their established status quo and exert more of her will than he can take care of. “You never loved me. You just loved how much I loved you.” spits Lawrence through tears and oil and fire at Bardem, giving as succinct and powerful a summary of the film’s message as a later speech about the roles of Life and Hope, if not more so. The problem in their marriage isn’t that she wasn’t enough, it’s that she was more than this windbag could handle or take care of.

“God is a gaslighting husband” reads the headline of one review of mother!, and that’s about the best way to sum up Bardem’s talented poet and worthless husband. Of all the characters, few though there may be, Bardem’s is the most blatantly allegorical in construction and execution. All this man has is the love of a wife he neglects, without whom the audience would have no reason to believe him a great artist. Still, even in writing this review Bardem has been the least compelling part of the film for me to try and get a grip on. The swarms of all-consuming fans, in some ways completely following his words while utterly polluting them in others, feel like a more captivating subject than he himself does. It’s not as though Lawrence’s efforts to keep him don’t feel worthwhile, but her devotion to him is simply the best thing going for him, from an audience point of view. Bardem is God, is a shitstain of a husband, is a paragon of our worst, most ravenous instincts towards celebrity, and yet these are perhaps the least arguable aspects of the film to discuss. By design he is thinly sketched, vaguely defined and impossibly finite in his narrative and symbolic value compared to everyone else, an odd combination that makes me surprised I found this much to say about him.

What does it say about Aronofsky that he wrote a film about an artist neglecting his wife for ravenous idolaters, starring an actor his exact age and an actress he began dating during filming? What does Rachel Weisz, Aronofsky’s ex-wife, think of a film that ends with this defiant wife being literally replaced by someone who appears to be even younger? What are we supposed to think about this, given that the film’s intro sequence contextualizes everything we’ve seen as not being the first time this has all happened? Who do we think suffers worse in this Purgatory, the man who fruitlessly forces himself through this cycle again and again, or the partner who never remembers it, and experiences each fresh hell as though it’s the first time? There’s no reading of mother! that isn’t deeply cynical towards its creators and the audience consuming it, that doesn’t amplify the idea that hell is other people and their worst, least considerate intentions. It can coexist as what its creators hope for as well as every interpretation of itself on the internet. I’ve heard nothing but vitriol directed at it from friends and a surprising about of split opinions online, all of which feel like proper responses to all the provocation they’ve witnessed. One friend trashed the film as utterly empty in its escalating violence and didn’t think any of it was plausible; a classmate seemed to take the religious allegory as proof in and of itself the film had something meaningful to say; a few friends were just traumatized by the imagery; Tommy immediately bought a 4Loco and cigarettes, raging against the film all night. I joined in, but stood up for the sound design and technically proficient aspects of the film, for Michelle Pfeiffer’s performance, and the wronged wife scenario. If anything, talking about it out loud has made me more sympathetic to it, so much so that I saw it again with our squad while Tommy got plastered, bragging to our disappointed crew that he made the better choice. Tommy conceded my points and positive aspects but still found the whole thing too vile to root for in any capacity, and would be very happy if the film got no Oscar nominations the morning of. I sincerely doubt that happening, even as I plan on throwing a bouquet at whichever genius was in charge of sound editing at the very least. On all levels mother! is a polarizing and divisive beast, very intentionally so. Nothing has fascinated me more than individual reactions to it, and even if reviews suggest a film you don’t have the stomach for I urge you to go. Yes, this is an unpleasant, difficult film to sit through. People left in both my audiences. Plenty of people hate it with a passion, and plenty consider it Aronofsky’s masterpiece. But no film begs you to take something, anything of value from it like this one. Examine it yourself, test your mettle. See what you’re willing to look up with, and what you can find in the tale of an ignorant man and a neglected woman. Maybe it’s about God, or Earth, or Women and Men, or all of the above. Go for yourself. mother! gives and it gives and it gives and it gives, with something standing defiantly the more viscerally it shoves its beating heart at the audience. It’s an ordeal, but even if it’s one you get nothing out of, it’s still a commanding, singular presence in a way “better” movies can’t compete with.

History in 1984

Over break I reread 1984 to fulfill our third quarter reading requirement. It was way darker than I remembered, which is saying something. Seriously it might be one of the most hopelessly depressing novels I have ever read. But it is good, so good! So utterly fascinating.

What interested me most about it was how Orwell played with the concept of the past and what history actually is. I am very passionate about history and will probably end up studying it in college so those sections with Winston working in his job and ruminating about the nature of the past I found to be extremely interesting.

Orwell’s clearest ruminations on totalitarian societies and the past comes in the context of Winston’s job as a man who rewrites the past. Because the government wants to appear flawless and above question they need to make sure the historical records reflect nothing but truth. To that end,

“This process of continuous alteration was applied not only to newspapers, but ...to every kind of literature or documentation which might conceivably hold any political or ideological significance. Day by day and almost minute by minute the past was brought up to date. In this way every prediction made by the Party could be shown by documentary evidence to have been correct, nor was any item of news, or any expression of opinion, which conflicted with the needs of the moment, ever allowed to remain on record. All history was a palimpsest, scraped clean and reinscribed exactly as often as was necessary. In no case would it have been possible, once the deed was done, to prove that any falsification had taken place....A number of ‘The Times’ which might, because of changes in political alignment, or mistaken prophecies uttered by Big Brother, have been rewritten a dozen times still stood on the files bearing its original date, and no other copy existed to contradict it. Books, also, were recalled and rewritten again and again, and were invariably reissued without any admission that any alteration had been made. Even the written instructions which Winston received, and which he invariably got rid of as soon as he had dealt with them, never stated or implied that an act of forgery was to be committed: always the reference was to slips, errors, misprints, or misquotations which it was necessary to put right in the interests of accuracy” (41)

What’s happening at the Ministry of Truth is both horrifying and yet seems like it could be possible. It’s ingenious in a way, to control a citizenry by controlling the reality in which they live. Big Brother is taking history, which is supposed to be a way of looking at the past based on analysis of objective facts and is instead turning it into something overtly political. They are taking control of the past, not just twisting the analysis of facts, but twisting the facts themselves. They are making it impossible to question the veracity or accuracy of the government. History becomes a tool of legitimacy and oppression instead of something that can be used to inform the present. But of course the obvious flaw in this plan is that people themselves have memories and judgement and seem to have to ability to understand the nature of historical truth. Winston certainly understands the discrepancy between what is record and what is real

“He meditated resentfully on the physical texture of life. Had it always been like this? Had food always tasted like this? ... Always in your stomach and in your skin there was a sort of protest, a feeling that you had been cheated of something that you had a right to. It was true that he had no memories of anything greatly different. In any time that he could accurately remember, there had never been quite enough ... And though, of course, it grew worse as one’s body aged, was it not a sign that this was NOT the natural order of things, if one’s heart sickened at the discomfort and dirt and scarcity, the interminable winters, the stickiness of one’s socks, the lifts that never worked, the cold water, the gritty soap, the cigarettes that came to pieces, the food with its strange evil tastes? Why should one feel it to be intolerable unless one had some kind of ancestral memory that things had once been different?”(59)

Here Winston sense the wrongness of the world he lives in even if he has no actual evidence to prove that it is wrong. He is not old enough to have any concrete memories of a time before the Party ruled and he doesn’t have any paper evidence that denies what the party tells him yet he is convinced that his current style of life is a step backwards. There is something innate that gives him knowledge of a better past, a glimpse at what is actually the historical truth. But for Winston a gut feeling isn’t enough.

“Day and night the telescreens bruised your ears with statistics proving that people today had more ... than the people of fifty years ago. Not a word of it could ever be proved or disproved...It was like a single equation with two unknowns. It might very well be that literally every word in the history books, even the things that one accepted without question, was pure fantasy.... Everything faded into mist. The past was erased, the erasure was forgotten, the lie became truth. Just once in his life he had possessed—AFTER the event: that was what counted—concrete, unmistakable evidence of an act of falsification. He had held it between his fingers for as long as thirty seconds” (75)

Here Winston thinks about the same themes of the other passages, the Party is constantly rewriting the past, the abolishing the truth of history, but the only source to corroborate this remains inside of one’s mind. However Winston cannot actually say for sure what is being lied about and what is the truth. Maybe the Party is only changing a few details, maybe they are making up every single thing. If nobody knows what the actual truth is, then the lie is your only source. Its tenuous connection to knowledge is the only thing you have to rely on. That is why Winston places so much weight on the scrap of a newspaper that proves three criminals could not have committed a crime. It provides clear literal evidence that the government is lying, it validates of all of Winston’s perceptions that he knows, but can’t ever prove. It shows him categorically that he is not insane and the world he lives in is actually flawed. But that assurance fades after the actual piece of paper is gone.

“He wondered, as he had many times wondered before, whether he himself was a lunatic. Perhaps a lunatic was simply a minority of one. At one time it had been a sign of madness to believe that the earth goes round the sun; today, to believe that the past is inalterable. He might be ALONE in holding that belief, and if alone, then a lunatic. But the thought of being a lunatic did not greatly trouble him: the horror was that he might also be wrong....The heresy of heresies was common sense. And what was terrifying was not that they would kill you for thinking otherwise, but that they might be right. For, after all, how do we know that two and two make four? Or that the force of gravity works? Or that the past is unchangeable?If both the past and the external world exist only in the mind, and if the mind itself is controllable what then?”(80)

This passage is such a huge paradox. On the surface level it seems to make no sense, after all we all know that the past can’t be altered and two plus two makes four and that the basic realities of our universe are true. But on a deeper level it makes a sort of sense. After all truth in a lot of ways can be relative. On the one hand it is based on facts, but it also based on belief. If enough people believe a certain thing even if it goes against fact then that becomes the collective truth of society, For the believers in the minority the only thing they have to go off is facts, and in this case the only facts are the one in their own minds. And if everybody believes one thing and you believe something else and have no evidence the logical explanation is that you are the same. So Big Brother isn’t just changing records, and rewriting histories, they are actively changing the nature of reality. They are preventing people from ever fully knowing if they understand the truth or are just insane. It is an absolutely insane strategy but an absolutely brilliant one. Nevertheless his own lack of evidence doesn’t stop Winston from trying to find out the real truth. He tracks down an old man who would have been alive before the time of the Party but after asking him a few questions he realizes his quest is fruitless.

“Within twenty years at the most, he reflected, the huge and simple question, ‘Was life better before the Revolution than it is now?’ would have ceased once and for all to be answerable. But in effect it was unanswerable even now, since the few scattered survivors from the ancient world were incapable of comparing one age with another. They remembered a million useless things.... but all the relevant facts were outside the range of their vision. They were like the ant, which can see small objects but not large ones. And when memory failed and written records were falsified—when that happened, the claim of the Party to have improved the conditions of human life had got to be accepted, because there did not exist, and never again could exist, any standard against which it could be tested” (118)

I think this is one of Orwell’s more important passages about history. It’s another paradox, that a true history can be false. But what is the truth if nobody knows it. In a few short years any memory of a time before the Party will be gone, even to those in charge. All the historical evidence has been changed and the original copies completely obliterated. There won’t be a single person alive who knows what has actually happened. The only source that one has will be the Party and whatever they say will be true because that is all that can be realized. History is a fragile thing, it is only what we have based on what we are told. We trust blindly in the truth of the sources we write and the garbled facts that come out of the minds of people still living but we honestly don’t have any true conception of the past. The only things we know for sure is what we ourselves have seen. As and Orwell reveals in 1984′s chilling third act even that might not be enough.

The scene is that Winston has been imprisoned by the Party and O’Brien shows him the long ago photograph of the three spies and then destroys it. Winston is anguished over the loss of clear evidence of his correctness and even more anguished that O’Brien has willed himself into forgetting. He declares that the past can exist in his own memory which O’Brien cannot control. The Party leader’s response?

"You are here because you have failed in humility, in self-discipline. You would not make the act of submission which is the price of sanity. You preferred to be a lunatic, a minority of one. Only the disciplined mind can see reality, Winston. You believe that reality is something objective, external, existing in its own right. You also believe that the nature of reality is self evident. When you delude yourself into thinking that you see something, you assume that everyone else sees the same thing as you. But I tell you, Winston, that reality is not external. Reality exists in the human mind, and nowhere else. Not in the individual mind, which can make mistakes, and in any case soon perishes: only in the mind of the Party, which is collective and immortal. Whatever the Party holds to be the truth, is truth. It is impossible to see reality except by looking through the eyes of the Party” (249).

These thoughts coincide with what Winston had been thinking earlier in the book. The only source for his views of the past is himself, his view of the truth disagrees with that of general societies and that would suggest a mental failure on his part. Here O’Brien is suggesting that what has happened in the past is immaterial and objective reality really does not exist. The only source of truth is what is agreed upon by societal powers, in this case, the party. Thus, it is the job of Winston to see things from the mindset of the group, rather than the group’s to cater to his reality. O’Brien believes that history really is relative, that it doesn’t need to have a basis in fact, it need only to follow group dogma. It is a frighteningly different concept than what most of us believe today. And indeed Winston himself comes to master the idea of doublethink and is able to change his own views on what is the past and what is the truth.
