so first of all thanks for 3,000 followers. holy shit. thats 3000 more than i expected so thanks
i really didnt think this blog would get to this point when i made it. and im never gonna get over how kind and encouraging you guys have been for me. unending respect & gratitude guys.
we're closin in on the end of 2023 now and im resolving to keep doing right by you guys and having fun running this blog with yall 🙂 thanks forever
i wanted to do somethin special for it and i thought id share one of my biggest inspirations for interpretin davekat. which is music i think they'd like. when you routinely blast davekat doodles onto mspaint canvases at 2am you need a backing track and these are common choices for me
3 songs for each dude for 3k fwlrs. man thats crazy...
tracklist + lil commentary under readmore
dave zone
1... 21st century pop song -- hymie's basement
this whole album i associate with dave a lot even tho its very depresse mode. i have way too many plays on this song. that beat is so real.
2... vice principal -- why?
that record scratch bit got me bouncing&trouncing manm. ive been listening to this song since i was a lil shitty kid. this voice is my headcanon voice for dave
3... re-do -- modern baseball
get a load of them lyrics son. passage of time, dinosaurs, trouble sleeping, watching movies, fear of death, love of life. recent fave, big fave.
KARKAT ZONE
4... i see failure -- antarctigo vespucci
another new beat 4 me but damn its an anthem. love dudes who shout. self fulfilling prophecies of relationship failure are peak karkat 2 me
5... the minors -- kawai sprite
i have never played friday night funky. i found this album by pure fuckin chance and its great, if you like this song give it a shot. sounds adult swim-y. i associate a lot of songs from this album with kk its a very distinct sound that i just connect with him fsr. the bittersweet sad anger of it
6... exactly where i'm at -- ween
this is a certified karkat classic 4 me. "look at yourself your lips are like 2 flabs of fat, they go front and back and flappity flappity flap". one of my fave things about ween is they have really vivid lyrics and rlly consistently hit this cool spacey, semi-aquatic vibe. i think this is because of drugs that they are awesome, so lets all do more druggs today

drop the hurdy gurdy recs NOW!!
Tumblr media
WITH PLEASURE!!!! these are the best in my opinion to just get used to the sound of the gurdy !
youtube
one of my favorite compositions on it EVER (#1 tbh...) and probably the best example of the overdrive feature used melodically! nigel's stuff in general is phenomenal! his sound is in my mind the closest to what medieval hurdy gurdy players probably were like <:) but thats just me dreaming…
youtube
AGAIN EXCELLENT OVERDRIVE!!! just for fun :)
youtube
youtube
YOU NEED. GUILHEM DESQ. IN. YOUR. LIFE. music that makes you want to shed clothes and break your neck rolling off a hill. i have no idea how they havent produced a full soundtrack to a cult classic movie yet. they have two albums out, Visions and STORM, my faves from each are the titular and break your cranck (sic) from the former and machinist waltz from the latter (it's unfortunately less gurdy focused but still good especially if you need like bg dnd music. tho i still prefer visions ahhdjssj)
youtube
another older one from nigel! amazing melody and buildup
youtube
this particular gurdy has a very idiosyncratic soulful sound. perfect for an indie movie and staring into stars
youtube
the audio quality is ass and spares only one of your ears but its so funky??? idk the most random rec on here probably
i find andrey vinogradov's stuff to be quite repetitive even if he is quite talented in the space of that repetition and he is like. the king you know so i dont link him here but if you want to know my favorite pieces it's reverse dance, bayraktar and romantic prelude.
and that's it for the introduction to the gurdy, one of my top 5 instruments in history! thank you if you took the time to listen even if only one of these :] and happy new year! (also for my deltarune heads, my hc is that seam played one in their entertainer years alongside jevil's concertina/accordion <3)

Hehehoho Take Me Back To Eden for the album thing ;p
Hehehe, of course!! I'm delighted to talk about this one, even though making me choose is cruel and unusual because this whole album is so fucking GOOD.
Favourite lyric: HARD CHOICE, THERE'S SO MANY. So, not in order:
Oh I am done dancing to alarm bells / No wonder my ears are still ringing / And I am done fighting off change / No wonder my arms are still swinging (Aqua Regia) Will we remain stuck in the throat of gods? / Will the pain stop if we go deeper? / So let's get swallowed whole (Vore) For so long, I have waited / So long that I almost became / Just a stoic statue, fit for nobody / And I don't wanna get in your way / But I finally think I can say / That the vicious cycle was over / The moment you smiled at me (Rain) And I don't know what's got its teeth in me / But I'm about to bite back in anger / No amount of self-sought fury / Will bring back the glory of innocence (Take Me Back To Eden)
Favourite song: Rain. Partially bc of the kas!Eddie fic (which is still rattling around in my brain I promise), but it's definitely the one that's lasted as my top fave in all the re-listens I've done. I love the lyrics, I love the music, the themes of yearning and desire and cleansing, I just- UHG. SO GOOD.
Song that makes me cry: Are You Really Okay? The subject matter hurts. Close second is DYWTYLM because ough, the yearning.
Song that's a fucken bop: The Summoning. The way it starts immediately draws me in and gets me headbanging. It's also just a sexy song. The funky bit in the back end of the song?? Damn.
Song I dislike/love the least: I genuinely don't dislike any of these songs, they're all amazing. But I think the one that just doesn't stick with me is Euclid, possibly because I'm not as tuned in to the Sleep Token lore so I don't catch the references!
Anyway, if you (any non-Gerry readers) made it this far and haven't heard this album, check it out!!

do you have a green day song you hate for no reason?
oh this is a gOOOD QUESTION. lemme think.
i dont think theres any i hate? although there are definitely some skips and some dislikes. and i also dont know the whole discography as well as id like to yet! so that is definitely partt of it. like, i probably dont even know some of my fave/least fave songs yet cause i dont listen to them enough.
however, warning! is a pretty mid album, for one. no real standouts, except for minority obviously, which bangs. then theres tre, which i really dont listen to much cause its just. a boring album really.
then theres father of all motherfuckers. ohhh, this album man. its club music. and i dont like it. imma be so real, its not even bad music?? its just. boring. and its SO not green day. its just out of character for them. its too like..... nothing. it says nothing.
i guess id say the song i dislike the most, and this is tough to say, is meet me on the roof from father of all motherfuckers. and im gonna be honest, i actually REALLY like this song. its funky, and its fun to listen to. however, i have higher standards for green day.
Tumblr media
like, this is the chorus!! seriously, billie?? i expected bigger things from you man. i despise it when songs do that thing where they end lines with "girl", or "tonight", to give the lines a sense of completeness. idk how to explain it over text but, you get it. and it does both 😭😭 i listen to this song a lot because its very funky and its got good vibes. however its lyrics are just unbecoming of a green day song and that pisses me off

you're tuning into the jj radio show.. here are some sort-of monthly roundups!!! (but kind of last months too its only been september for like 2 weeks). idk if any of them will be ur thing but i hope u like at least one out of the 10 i picked >_^
3005, childish gambino. god. this is just the song ever for me i cant explain why i love it so much i just DO. sol.. to be honest.. i'll right by ur side til 3005. ITS JSUT SOOOO.
追われてる, soul scream. INCREDIBLE!!! THIS IS REAL MUSIC!!! THIS IS CRAZYYYY. OWARETERU ❗ OWARETERU 💢 OWARETERUU 💥 like some people wouldnt even get it for real.
make luv, brent faiyaz. CRUSHING something in my hands right now. IDK HOW HE DOES ITTTT when he makes sth good he makes sth GOOD do u get me. i might explode.
100,000 - unfinished, jai paul. shoving this song into the hands of anyone who'll listen. every time i listen to this song i think the “And when you think you know what I know / A hundred thousand light years to go” near the end wont hit as hard because i've sort of built up a resistance to it and then it SHOOTS ME IN THE HEADDD. too good.
trick me, kelis. the tasty (2003) album gets me INSANE there is not a singular miss on there for me. and this song... oh its so bad rn. im obsessed with it. like im going crazy. Hepl!
1 thing, amerie. i hear this song and suddenly i can sing i can dance and i can walk in 6-inch heels! and also this isnt that relevant to the song but her hair on the touch album cover.. IT EATS IDEK
two moons, exo-k. you might've heard this before but if not IT NEEDS TO BE HEARDDDD this is literally one of my fave exo songs.
the 7th sense, nct u. you might've heard this too sorry 😓😓 BUT HOW CAN I NOT SUGGEST THIS LIKE ? changed my life forever. when mark lee said “uh, and that's a long-ass ride” i think some part of me just passed away. that IS a long ass ride. 1 thing mark lee's never gonna do is lie!!
taking what's not yours, tv girl. THIS SONG IS SO FUNNYYY. and also very good. BUT ITS SO PETTY LIKE STOP I GIGGLE EVERY TIME I LISTEN 😭 “Ooh, I still have your lighter / Ooh, I still have your book” LIKE HE SOUNDS SO ANNOYING LMFAOO
iii. telegraph ave, childish gambino. had to start and end w him!!! again HOW IS HE SO CRAZY LIKE THISSS. got me moving and floating and ascending and dying. its serious. i love it.
and thats it! like i said i hope u like at least 1 ☹️ THIS WAS FUN I RLY ENJOYED TYPING OUT MY SILLY LITTLE THOUGHTS.. but i will shut up now LOL. time for you to switch to a different station, because the jj radio show is over!! (LMAOO OK ROLEPLAY)
3005: not bad not bad! rap isn't my favourite genre but the lyricism is great and it's honestly really nice to listen to while staring out a window :DD
追われてる: the intro was funky in a good way! love the rhythm and it's catchy in a way that has me bobbing along to it.
make luv: not really my vibe but the chorus is enjoyable. smth id put on my fic writing playlist ngl 👍
100,000 - unfinished: THE SWITCH UP AT THE BEGINNING AYOOO??! from the heavy rap to sudden vocals then merging the two is so 😩😩 i love the vibes of it. “a hundred thousand light years to go” ‼️‼️‼️‼️ i love how the words are staggered; it’s jerky the speech but it works so well
trick me: again, the song itself isn't for me specifically but the lyricism is to die for. "freedom to us has always been a trick // freedom to you has always been who ever landed on your dick" LIKE HELLO??? YES I LOVE THIS audibly went "ooooh" when i heard it. the rap is amazing too
1 thing: ok the intro ok it's nice its nice. OOH THE VOCALS I LIKE THIS TBH it's so fun??! if i weren't hacking my lungs out id totally get up and dance very badly to this (pretend like im an edit or like part of a clip compilation or smth yes yes)
two moons: the beginning is very cool, i like the beat and the rapping! ok when it picks up around 0:59 and they start saying two moons and stuff 💥💥💥 honestly did not expect to like this as much as i actually do :00 added it to my main playlist too 😼😼
the 7th sense: "OPEN YOUR EYES" OMG I LOVE THE CHORUS like my eyes are open and im sat. I GET WHAT YOU MEAN WITH THE MARK LINE!!!! nah ok this is going on the main playlist bc yes.
taking what’s not yours: THIS??? SLAPS??? i don't listen to enough tv girl shit i should be- the beat is such a good walking song i will climb a mountain listening to this. “ooh, i still have your lighter // ooh, i still have your book // ooh i still have everything you bought, but you never took” this right here. makes me want to- *explodes*
iii. telegraph ave: OMG THE DROP thought this was going to be a slower song but. the shift. the switch up 😫
omg this was fun!! pls music recs are amazing i love getting them

ALBUM REVIEW TIME 👹
Today we are reviewing one of my fave kpop group’s new album MAXIDENT by Stray Kids with the title track Case 143
Tumblr media
I just wanna say how I’m so proud of these dudes, they write and produce their own music and their skills get stronger with every release 🫶🏻 anyway on to the review
Case 143 - 7/10 - it’s definitely interesting. I was worried i wasn’t gonna like it all that much based on the snippet on tik tok but it’s much better within the context of the whole song. This song does what they set up in the previous release Maniac and improves upon it. Although the first section of the chorus is jarring, its a huge ear worm and im addicted to it. If Stray Kids were going to do a love song this is exactly how i expected them to do it 😭 (also give the music video a watch you won’t regret it, it’s quite funny, felix gets slapped by a cooked chicken 😀)
Chill - 8/10 - a song written and composed by our Hannie!! His songs are always so nice!! This is a cool jazzy style r&b song. It takes some similarities from lofi music too and some classic hip hop beats and overall its so good. Han’s solo written and composed songs have only improved since debut and i love it so much!!
Give me your TMI - 9/10 - This one is for all my living tombstone fans and fnaf fans!! The crunchy instrumental is everything and the drop into the chorus is so interesting. Also when Changbin starts the song with a strong rap that seems like complete nonsense, you know the songs gonna hit!! But yeah keeping up with hip hop sounds, the incorporate crunchy edm and alternative rock style sounds too and it just makes this song so funky I love it!!
SUPER BOARD - 6/10 - where do i start with this song… the intro itches my brain so hard. The “nada da shooom super board” gets stuck in your head so badly 😭 the song leans into a more rock style but instead of an electric guitar riff, you get these synth sounds and it adds that retro flare to the song. Although the repetition of nada da shoom super board can get a bit annoying and lessens the replay-ability of the song for me
3RACHA (Bangchan, Changbin, Han) - 5/10 - this is well and truly a Drill song. Like this is something straight out of the streets of south london. The raps of our producing unit are satisfying to my ears however this style of music just isn’t my personal taste and i don’t think i would listen to it often. Not a bad song tho ✨also ik chan is australian but im claiming changbin and han as honorary brits for this song
TASTE (Hyunjin, Felix, Lee Know) - 8.5/10 - when Hyunjin described this song as a cold version of red lights he wasn’t wrong. They need to keep this man in the studio his brain is amazing. 4th member of 3racha?? Perhaps. Whenever you put Danceracha (this unit) in the studio expect a hoe anthem honestly. I’m very proud of how Hyunjin and Felix’s vocals have improved. Lee Know really gets to use his more powerful vocals and that makes me so happy!! Also the drop in this song is insane. Listening to it isn’t enough i need it shot into my veins 😭
Can’t Stop (Seungmin, I.N) - 7/10 - my vocalracha 🫶🏻 this is a pop rock style song. They worked with one of day6’s producers for this track which you can tell!! But it suits them so much!! Seungmin and innie’s voices are so lovely the drums and guitars are so strong. You will absolutely catch me dancing about to this song 😭 however i will say that the mixing between the vocals and the instrumental feels a bit off. Idk how to explain it. Also they cut off Seungmin’s high note, gonna sob.
Circus (Korean version) - 8/10 - This was the title track for their lastest Japanese mini album so i’ve heard if before. Its a bop. But I will say i think the korean version flows a lot better between the english lines and the korean ones. Where as the Japanese version felt a little too sharp?? But yeah Circus would slay is every language if we’re honest
Anyways, Maxident Album of the year. Also is you ever wanna talk to me about Stray Kids pls send me an ask, I love these dudes so much 😭🫶🏻

Yoooo fucking Jeon Jungkook (the irl one) is… ooff fuck him honestly 😂😭. I was finally like getting out of obsessing over him and kpop boys for a bit, and then he releases Standing Next to You and DUDE! I will be highly obsessed with this song for a looonnggg time. ITS GOT ALL MY FAVE MUSIC SHIT!!!! Funky fun? CHECK. Bitch ass busting base CHECK. Shit ton of high energy brass CHECK. Like a combo of pop, funk, and disco CHECK!! It’s groovy as shit, and I will not get over it. And his hair is short again, and the tattoos have been out and I love tattoos and THIS IS NOT GOING WELL FOR ME. I mean it is I guess because I get to listen to this song on repeat BUT IM TOO BUSY TO BE JUNGKOOK BIASED 😭😭😭😭😭 I can’t express how much I like the music he’s been putting out tho. Genuinely. It’s not cuz I like him, cuz I’ve had biased that I ended up not biasing anymore once they went solo cuz I just didn’t vibe with their music.
DUDEEE! I KNOW! If Im being honest i haven't been a stan of bts for a while now, but they always had a special because they were one of the groups i discovered while getting into kpop, and tbh I haven't really liked any of bts recent songs except dynamite and I haven't liked a lot of their solos either only jimins so far but jungkook. . .JUNGKOOK. . .GETS THE VIBES! THE ALBUM WAS SO GOOD! My two favs are "Too Sad To Dance" and "Shot Glass Of Tears" they both hit HARD! "Standing Next To You" is so GROOVY I love his vibe and can't wait for more. I know armies will come for this but I feel like they are doing so good on their own, if they or when they come back together I think they'll being doing a lot better but I personally think they last few songs beside "My Universe" were ehh.

the beautiful blue danube / johan strauss ii: its the music from the docking sequence in 2001 a space odyssey, which i recently rewatched and which mesmerizes me every time. superbly beautiful seeing those ships DANCE man!!!! another fucking masterpiece

Grey Suit First Impression
It’s worth mentioning that when I first watched the mv I was barely conscious, so my opinion on it could change later, but like I said, it’s a lovely song, I just wish he had used his lower register more often on it. I also *love* the lyrics, they’re so creative and expressive, but also sad. Well done bunny leader.
Ooh Morning Star starts like some epic 80’s band. Now I’m getting a leeeeettle bit of Coldplay; some Bittersweet Symphony. I really like this instrumental! His voice feels awfully soft for this kind of song, but it does give it some kind of melancholy. Ooh, really nice end!
Oooooh Hurdle has a FUN start! It’s so funky! Oh hell yeah, this is gonna be a great mv! This is even more 80’s than the first one, very synthy with a splash of Blooming Day? I *love* him experimenting on a song style like this! Omg yes, he’s killing this song! Oooh what is happening with this??? I *think* I hear a sample, but I can’t tell?? That song was SUCH a fun listen, and you wouldn’t necessarily expect this sound from him, which is FANTASTIC! Fave so far.
Hmm…curious start on Decanting. It feels like a slow coffee shop jam. I love that he’s going a little lower. Very slow, cool piano. Ooh! Interesting sound effects on the chorus?? If this is the ‘sensual’ one I’m very curious about the lyrics… It has a prominent ‘longing’ kind of feeling. OOH! Electric guitar! English! Show off sweetie! Daaamn I *love* the band sound throughout this album. Hang on, must read the lyrics. [Intermission.] OH MY GOD!!! Suho going mature and sexy, hell yes! This is his Drown and I love it! Good for you sweetie!
Okie doke, Bear Hug. Ohhh it’s softer than I was expecting. I love the husky tone at the beginning here. Striiiings…Ohhhh yes!!! Beautiful belt! He is SINGING here, wow! Oh this is beautiful. I love that he’s not staying higher here, it’s deep and warm. He’s not even going higher on the chorus yet, he’s just doing these soaring, stable notes. This is probably the most *suiting* to his voice YET! I hear a voice like his or Jinki’s and I think “classical” vocalist; and this song is just right for that. Wonderful.
Moment. What curious plucking at the beginning…I don’t mean to be a cliche, but this song SOUNDS underwater, without having a muffled instrumental…does that make sense? I’m enjoying it a lot though. This and Grey Suit are definitely the most ‘Suho’ tracks. GOD more strings, beautiful! The melody is so smooth yet…dark? This song has a lot of his versatility on it; after that lift into the high note he goes low again. It’s a little better than Grey Suit and Morning Star though, because even though he’s up high he’s not being drowned out by the music this time.
Overall this was a WONDERFUL sophomore effort! Suho choosing to do a band sound for this album was a pleasant chance to appreciate music on its own again; guitars, piano, strings. Beautiful. I wanted Morning Star and/or Bear Hug to be my favorites, and while I *love* Bear Hug, I suspect my favorites will be either Decanting, or Hurdle. Decanting had an awesome slow vibe already, and I’m also a sucker for when adult idols are allowed to express adult lyrics. And Hurdle is such an outlier, both on the album and for his voice, that I love the uniqueness. Plus the sound is so 80’s radio synth, and that’s my jam.
Overall, great job Junmyeon! We’re so glad you’re back. ❤️

Opinions on George's discography?
BEAUTIFUL AMAZING PERFECT PRISTINE
okay, a bit more depth :
(and thank you <3)
all things must pass and living in the material world are currently my favourites not just of his but of all . the mix of influences, the third beatle songwriter letting it all out, the development of his writing, singing, guitar-playing, producing skills... he goes from cool band guy with new and exciting ideas to musical legend in two albums .
dark horse and brainwashed are my second favourites--despair and hope, i guess . but both are so well crafted, like everything he did . i kind of love the '74 raspy voice even if the causes were terrible . and, of course, it's so lovely to know exactly where his music was going in the new century . he sounds as great as ever and the guitar work is something of a rare beauty .
33 1/3 is the funniest cheekiest cheeriest of all his albums and i love it to bits . lots of olivia love in there and also for his musical faves .
then, extra texture, george harrison and somewhere in england--amazing songs, great funky beats, happy new daddy/new husband songs, cheeky political songs, god but in a cool way, good times, chill times . here comes the moon and love comes to everyone are just👌
gone troppo and cloud 9 should really get a lot more love, i mean... his hawaiian shirt dad phase has to be the best . upbeat, party george, 80s bangers, beatle nostalgia, george in the sun under a palm tree, george among the cool new wave kids, the time bandits theme song, THE DHANI SONG... ❤️❤️❤️
i even quite like wonderwall ?? it's not the kind of music that i would play regularly (except maybe cowboy music lol) but it's still soso beautiful and really does tell a story on its own . i just... adore him . god .
electronic sound gets last place, but i look forward to listening to it while thoroughly high one day .

@obsessedwiththemadness okay i am hyperfixating myself on some music to cope tonight and i blasted through the ones i didn’t recognize and i’ll go by the names right below:
Caustic Disco - this was so 80s and so Manson-esque at the same time it was very interesting to listen to! I also really love songs that have movie quotes weaved into lyrics it’s so fun!
Blood - again had a very Manson vibe to it with a very catchy beat and haunting vocals! Very fun to listen to! I can see why your partner likes it!
Pumped Up Kicks - the retro beats in this man were so amazing! I venture to guess you really like techno/gothic music and I love it!
You Spin Me Round - also very techno and i love the cover it came up with on Spotify (Daniel Radcliffe holding up two guns lmao made me giggle)
Get Your Body Beat - I feel like I could do an entire HIIT workout to this song it’s so funky and retro! I fuckin’ love the vibes!
Damaged - OMG THE FEELS IN THIS SONG GOT ME SO BAD, his lyrics hit so deep and the beat is so smooth too it’s so great
30K FT - THE VIOLIN IN THIS SONG IS GORGEOUS I COULDN’T EVEN COPE. i loved the eerie beats and the robotics coupled with his haunting words omg it was great!
**I couldn’t find Let Me Be Your Armor on his Spotify so maybe I was typing the wrong song name??? I’m not sure!**
On Type O Negative.... I HAVE BEEN LISTENING TO THEM SINCE I WAS IN MIDDLE SCHOOL AND I LOVE THEM SO MUCH I HAVE THEM ON MY LIKES AND IN EVERY PLAYLIST I HAVE MADE I CAN’T SPEAK ANY HIGHER OF THEM THAN I AM NOW! Christian Woman SLAPS and so does Wolf Moon omg like lbr all of their shit is a banger!
On Trivium... THAT ALBUM IS LIFE CHANGING LIKE FR! IF YOU LIKED THAT ONE... BE PREPARED TO HAVE YOUR MIND BLOWN... THEY RELEASED What The Dead Men Say in 2020... AND ITS EVEN BETTER BABE... fave tracks on there so far are Catastrophist, What The Dead Men Say, The Defiant, and Sickness Unto You... take a fuckin’ listen you’ll be so happy!
OKAY NOW IM GONNA RECOMMEND 5 NEW SONGS BACK TO YOU AND THIS WILL BE A RECYCLING OF MADNESS!

Listed: Dr. Pete Larson
Tumblr media
Dr. Pete Larson runs Dagoretti Records now, he’s gotten there by an unusually long and winding road. Earlier in his career, Larson fronted 25 Suaves and Couch and ran BULB records. He also trained as an epidemiologist and spent time in Kenya studying the transmission of malaria. While in Kenya, he developed an interest in a lute-like eight-stringed instrument called a nyatiti and studied it with the master player Oduor Nyagweno. All these interests collide in a striking first album from Dr. Pete Larson and His Cytotoxic Nyatiti Band, where the nyatiti “cuts through a haze of electric rock distortion, pinging rhythmically and restlessly against floating euphorias of ululating vocals,” per Jennifer Kelly’s review. Here he lists some favorites from several continents.
I have been asked to create one of these lists for Dusted and here’s what I came up with. Making these lists is kind of difficult. I have a hard time remembering what I’ve been listening to at any moment, but here is a collection of old and new that get frequent airplay in my home. I play a Kenyan lyre, so this heavily leans toward lyre and harps and East African music in general, with some other choice cuts thrown in.
Musicians Of The National Dance Company Of Cambodia — Homrong (Real World Records)
youtube
I think I got this record (CD) back in the early 90s when I was selling music to Caroline Records. A friend sent me a box of CD promos, most of which wasn’t very interesting, but fortunately, this one was included. I don’t really know anything about Cambodian music, but for some reason, this collection of mid-tempo Cambodian court jamz plays every couple of months. Lots of weird sort of lurching rhythms and chorus singing with an erhu like instrument over it. A great listen.
Maleem Mahmoud Ghania w/ Pharoah Sanders — Trance of the Seven Colors
The Trance Of Seven Colors by Maleem Mahmoud Ghania w/ Pharoah Sanders
Trance inducing this is. Maleem Mahmoud Ghania is (was) one of the 20th century masters of Moroccan Gnawa music, a sort of spiritual, bass-heavy, rolling kind of music of Morocco. Any recording by Maleem Mahmoud is going to impress, but this mash of up of Gnawa with the great Pharoah Sanders is another level. If you are familiar with Gnawa music, it is a little disorienting to hear Sanders howl over the slow burn trance jamz but you are quickly drawn into what a perfect matchup this ended up being. Released on CD in the 90s, it fortunately has finally gotten a proper vinyl release.
Momoyama Harue — “Lullaby for the mother demon’s baby” (桃山晴衣* ‎– 鬼の女の子守唄)
youtube
I was playing the shamisen for a while (a three stringed lute from Japan) and found Momoyama Harue as part of my research. Shamisen is kind of a folky instrument for drinking parlors and entertainment of old Japan. The instrument and the music was nearly dead but saw a revival in the 1960s, similar to folk revivals in the US that brought the banjo back. Momoyama, however, was kind of an outlier, more arty than folky, and more poetry than song. Rather than box the music in an imagined past or try to hopelessly smash it into amplified rock music, she pushed it forward, blending it with ambient synth along with Indian and Middle Eastern musics. One of her best collaborations was with the great Egyptian oud player Hamza el Din that was nearly dead until the 1960s. All of the songs on this record are haunting (as the title suggests), but these tracks with el Din are truly singular. I have been searching for a vinyl copy of this record for years; one day I’ll get lucky.
Lucas Odote — “J. Oreng”
Nyatiti Singles Volume 1 by Lucas Odote
I spent several years in Kenya learning to play the nyatiti, an eight stringed lyre historically played by a group of people in an area around Lake Victoria. I also spent time collecting records, searching for hours in dusty boxes for Kenyan traditional music records. One of my best finds was at Jimmy’s Records in Kenyatta Markets, this record by the great Nairobi based nyatiti player Lucas Odote. Most nyatiti records are just a guy playing solo and more ethno than funky. But this one seems to be Lucas teaming up with what I think to be Nairobi funksters, the Loki Toki Tok band. At least that’s what I can guess. My copy is beat to hell. It took some doing to get some sound out of it, but this is one of my faves in my collection.
Siti Muharam — Siti of Unguja (Romance Revolution On Zanzibar)
Siti of Unguja (Romance Revolution On Zanzibar) by Siti Muharam
I swear I saw Siti Muharam sing on the deck of a hotel bar while vacation in Zanzibar several years ago. I can’t be certain, but I am pretty sure it was her singing for the band I saw. The traditional form of Taarab music is something to be experienced. Taarab music comes from the Arab coast of East Africa, and is this fantastic mix of local feel and Arab sounds, overlapped with heart wrenching songs of lost love and longing. I think there are some foreigners involved in this production, but this is an excellent document of Taarab music at its best.
Grandmaster Masese — “Orogena rwa Baba”
Grandmaster Masese: New African Soundz Singles No.1 by Grandmaster Masese
It might be gauche to put records from your own label on a list like this, but I am first a music fan and second a musician and third a music seller… so this one stays. G-master is a friend of mine from Kenya and one of the best humans I know. One of just a handful of people who play the Obokano, a giant 8 stringed lyre that emits an unforgettable sub-bass buzzing sound and this was his first release in the US and one of my favorite records ever. We recorded this in his kitchen in Nairobi with just a couple of mics over dinner. G is a cool guy. You should listen to his music.
Yagi Michiyo — Seventeen
youtube
Yagi is another Japanese musician who specializes in what one would think is a “traditional” instrument, but who brings much more to the table than one would expect. Yagi is a koto player by training. You have probably heard koto in the background music for scenes of Japan in American movies. The version you hear there is mostly lifeless and flat, kind of like a plastic chair in the corner. Yagi, however, plays the 17 string bass koto, invented in the 1920s or so, to try and give new life to the instrument. Yagi creates weird percussive, dissonant music that I can’t really get enough of.
Asnakech Worku (featuring Hailu Mergia) — Asnakech
Asnakech by Asnakech Worku
Asnakech Worku was a lot of things; pioneer, actress, but most notably a female Krar player. Certainly there might have been other female Krar players in Ethiopia at the time, but Krar players are mostly men. The Krar is a lyre from Ethiopia, mostly played with one hand, though there are several playing styles out there. Worku plays haunting sounds on her Krar on this record, backed up by famous Ethiopian keyboardist Hailu Mergia, who really needs no intro.
Ogola Opot — “Domtila Ogola”
youtube
This will probably be the only 78 on this list. Ogola Opot is considered the grandfather of the Kenyan nyatiti, coming to prominence in the 1960s and 70s, and creating the genre we know as Siaya style “traditional nyatiti.” If someone asks me what nyatiti music sounds like, this is probably where I would have people start. I include this first because it is a great record and second because it was my holy grail for a while (though I always have new holy grails) and managed to find a pristine copy for sale from a place in France recently. I am not going to say how much I paid for it.
Sosena Gebre Eyesus — S/T (Little Axe Records)
Sosena Gebre Eyesus by Sosena Gebre Eyesus
I bought this record off the net because I am a huge fan of Begena music, this haunting, trance inducing music from Ethiopia that appears to be the go-to for Ethiopian Christians… but this record explained nothing of that. Just a picture of a lady with a begena and no other info…. It took me a while to put together what the record was and where it came from, but the sounds contained within are impeccable. Just 40 minutes of weird undersea tones on a giant bass lyre.

#Noctislistening - Koushiro Edition (5 of 12)
#noctislistening digidestined series for more!
Brought to you by @earlgreymon‘s Digidestined FM and @tangledupblue‘s Digidestined-inspired playlists. Go listen right now!!
I’ve been trying to make a tiny adjustment lately and limiting time staring at screens and working off of notebooks and journals. Contrary to today’s featured Chosen who is constantly looking at screens to stay connected. (side note, have we ever seen him wearing glasses within canon?)
Last time, we drifted along the seaside with Jou (#4). Next up, we will chill out some more with Iori! (#6)
Tumblr media
That's music he's absorbing into his soul.
Digidestined FM (Koushiro version) @earlgreymon
I would be surprised if anyone within (around?) my generation doesn’t know “Get Lucky,” much less Daft Punk.
youtube
Other notable songs of constant radioplay include “Around the World” and “One More Time”. Both catchy and fun for head nods while working or in the car. :D
I must say I can be a lot like Koushiro with my music tastes and habits - I’ve fallen into the habit of playing a song on Youtube and just letting Autoplay work its magic. Plus, lofi streams are amazing for productivity. This kind of music actually first caught my ear when I met up with a friend and it played while we caught up and ate gelato. (This was a few years ago. I miss those times!!)
Anyway, my go-to lo-fi channel is ChilledCow: Just let that play while you’re writing and you’re golden.
Now, Pentatonix is one of my favorite music groups as of recent times! An eclectic group of voices fitting for a guy with an eclectic taste in music. :P I love their sounds together and separately (Mitch and Scott - hoomg they can sing). I try to keep up with their covers and their albums, and I absolutely cannot wait until after Thanksgiving when I can play their Christmas albums on loop!! My favorite medley from them is “The Wizard of Aaah’s” collaboration with Todrick Hall.
youtube
~*~*~*~*~*~
Coldplay was featured in Taichi’s playlist from @tangledupblue but I haven’t mentioned my favorite song from them! They’ve got a handful of great tunes but I would have to choose “Yellow” as my fave. :)
Owl City was also featured on that same playlist :D I haven’t listened to him much and have only known two songs (and recently, the third from that playlist). “Good Time” with Carly Rae Jepson is good!
I never thought about space sounds being part of the ‘relaxing sounds’ realm but I am not surprised that Koushiro would be into that kind of thing. I can imagine (Seal of Approval’s) Jou have a conversation with him about these sounds and I’m sure it’ll be an interesting conversation. xD
As far as kpop, I will get more into that when we get to Hikari’s playlist! As for Lana del Rey... I haven’t listened to her much other than what’s on the radio. If anyone’s got a song to recommend from her, feel free!
~*~*~*~*~*~ Kouzzy @tangledupblue
This playlist also has some diversity of sounds. In general, these songs have good, funky beats for our computer nerd to listen to. I must be showing my age when I throw out “electronica” and “techno” lol. Also I have a headcanon that some of these songs on both playlists that the other Chosen added their songs without Koushiro realizing because either they sound like his type of music or he’s just too busy paying attention to something else to care. Cases in point: “Stole My Heart” by One Direction (Hikari) and “I Like Me Better” by Lauv (Takeru) (And it’s definitely Takari that mess with his songs).
My Top 6!
Jamiroquai - Virtual Insanity // A good song from my youth! Also I remember being so fascinated by the conveyor belt effect in his video lol
youtube
~*~*~*~*~*~
Clean Bandit ft. Craig David and Kirsten Joy - We Were Just Kids  // I love this song, it’s so nostalgic
The Killers - Human // One of my favs from this band.
Black Eyed Peas - Meet Me Halfway // I miss this formation of this group with Fergie’s vocals alongside the rest. I chose this one over “I’ve Gotta Feeling” because it’s the one that wasn’t over-over-overplayed. (that was one song that my friends and I had to hear three times a day during our weeklong stay in Las Vegas years ago).
Alan Walker - Faded // My first time hearing this artist. I like it!
MIKA - Elle me dit // I talked about him more in Jou’s playlist, but I have to say how cute this song is and I love that this song is in this playlist! I’ve had to look up the lyrics - and I can totally imagine one of the others telling Koushiro to get out of his bubble and don’t be holed up in his room for too long. (I can see Mimi doing this! Maybe Taichi, too.)

Raise your glowsticks or BTS Army bombs (I’ve got one to borrow :P). Which songs (or sounds!) do you like from Koushiro’s playlists?

Hell yeah thanks!!! this is a long one
16. If you had to get a tattoo right now, what would you get and where
'Concentrate on the moment' in my dad's handwriting. He wrote it down in a little notebook of mine many years ago, and it's the only piece of his hand-writing I own. As for where... Somewhere I can easily see it, perhaps my inner wrist or arm.
17. Google the top song from the year you were born
Something About The Way You Look Tonight - Elton John
18. Rant about your favourite musician:
Currently alive for Michael Kiwanauka. He's making beautiful, soulful, enchanting, invigorating, funky music today! There are bops and feel goods like 'You Ain't The Problem', the soaring heights and heady strings of 'Father's Child', the hard groove and haunt of 'Hero', his wistful 'Light'. Just to mention a few. His latest album Kiwanuka is up for a Grammy 🤩 He's largely influenced by 60s/70s soul and jazz, but also loves folk music (Neil Young is one of his faves), you can hear calls to Jimi Hendrix and Minnie Riperton, among others, throughout his tunes. And I love how laidback he is and how he doesn't care at all for being the centre of attention. He never thought he'd be a singer, he was a zealous guitar player first, and wanted to do session playing, but he wasn't satisfied by the stuff he was playing for, so he began to write his own songs. He didn't even think of singing them himself until the producer he took them to listened to the demos and basically said...Yeah no, you should be singing these... To me his voice is of the earth, its rich, vast, resolute but forgiving, if his timbre was a landform it'd be a glorious canyon. Strong as the rock, soft as the rivers running through. Yeah he's fucking good, do go on.
