The College Degree is A Lie

Land of the lies, home of the slaves?

I was part of a generation that was fed my whole life about the necessity of college. Do you realize how easy it is to get the youth to believe wholeheartedly about something?  They don’t have years of experience and decision-making to influence them, they go by what many adults or peers tell them. They rely on the information to help guide them through the world and...it’s damn near an entire lie.

I was always told that college would make me successful. So...I’ve graduated with a BS in a STEM field, aaand I’m almost homeless. I want to say that I’m an anomaly, but it seems like there are tons of degree holders out there that are also struggling, or they had to settle for jobs that may not even require a degree. (They may have even had to leave out the fact they are degree-holders in order to get a job).

It doesn’t help that college is so expensive and yet it’s drilled into our brains that we need to go to college to get anywhere in life. Yet in the end there is not a big enough job market to employ the college graduates.

Well.. that sounds like god-damn money-making scheme. I don’t get mad very often, but this is one thing that pisses me off to no end. Here is an entire system built to churn out memorization slaves for the workforce that doesn’t have openings. But... I don’t know what is sicker, is it that fact that many colleges just take your money and tell you to fuck off? Or is it the companies that complain how underprepared american graduates are (and how much more they would have to pay them), which points to college as not even preparing them for the workforce. What really outlines this difference is when you compare the STEM program here to similar programs from different countries. I have seen other countries include a shit ton more of practical experience and specialized bachelor’s programs. Here? You get thrown into a program that “kinda-sorta” works for what you are trying to go for and you may only be required to take 3 lab classes (it could be the only 3 lab classes the school even offers). You know how you get practical experience? Internships, which may or may not be paid. But with the way American college is, it’s really hard to be a full-time student, have a full-time job, and then also throw an internship in there (if they even exist). and so, we end up with a lot of college graduates that don’t have enough practical experience to even get “entry” level jobs, we have many companies that are too lazy to train, and too few internships to begin with. This is only the tip of the education situation in America. And I’m sick of it.
