At last, summer had come. To celebrate the end of term, you and your friends took a trip to the beach for a week to unwind. The morning after arrival, y'all woke up bright and early to get smoothies and set up on the shore. As you walked across the sand, hand-in-hand with your girlfriend, Chaeryeong, you offered each other a sip of your drinks.

Once Minjeong and Yuna had picked a spot fitting their taste, umbrellas were buried and towels were laid. Ryujin roped you and Aeri into setting up a volleyball net, determined to have a tournament between the 10 of you. Tying your hair up into a high ponytail, you head back to the umbrella to put on sunscreen.

Hours have passed into mid- afternoon, full of swimming, eating, tanning, reading, and burying Lia. The girl sat up from her sandy grave, laughter bubbling from her lips followed by the suggestion, "Who wants to 2v2 me in volleyball?"

Immediately Chaeryeong volunteered, turning to ask you to be her teammate. "Why not?" you replied, unable to say no to the gleam in her eyes. Picking Yeji as her partner, she and Lia waited on the other side of the net as you and Chaeryeong jogged over. Excitedly, Yuna cried out, "I call reffing!" eliciting a giggle from the rest of the girls.

Yeji served the ball first, shooting it over the net just for you to best it back. The game went on for almost 20 minutes until Lia snagged a win for her and Yeji as she spiked the ball to your side, winning 6-4. Laughing as Lia cheered, you gave her a quick "good game" before heading back to your towel. Taking your hair down, you let out a groan, realizing just hoe tense your scalp was from keeping it up all day. Grabbing your brush from your bag, you began to detangle your hair, simultaneously massaging your head.

Walking over, Chaeryeong noticed the tenseness in your shoulders and face. Sitting down on the towel next to you, she asked, "What's wrong?"

"My head just hurts. I had my hair up too tight for too long and now I feel like my scalp will forever be scrunched."

Stifling a giggle at your phrasing, she opted to give you a sympathetic smile before leaning back. "Come here," she beckoned, patting her chest. A bit confused, you complied, laying down across her. She moved her hands to your hair, beginning to work her fingers through it as she massaged your head. "My sweetheart, you're so pretty, but you gotta give yourself breaks," she chided, laughing at your responding whine.

You sighed as her fingers worked their magic on your head, all the tension melting away under her touch. After the long day, warm sun, and tiring game all you can think about is Chaer. Your girlfriend noticed you dozing off and turned down the speaker Yizhou had brought, gesturing towards your figure when she and Jimin looked over in confusion.

"Sleep well, sweetheart. I'll wake you up for sunset." She kissed your forehead before letting you rest.

TWICE - "ONE SPARK"

Kayla Beardslee: It’s a convenient microcosm of Twice’s recent career arc that their three English-language singles have been better than the Korean title tracks of their respective albums. “One Spark” is nice, but its English companion song “I Got You” bursts open with an “OOOOooooOOoooh” hook that’s simple and sweet in its immediacy, whereas “One Spark” delays its best melody to the back end of the chorus. Just on the strength of the hooks, I prefer “I Got You,” but this is still more engaging than Twice's last Korean title track, which was an overly serious take on ’70s retro that arrived years too late to the trend. There’s been a sea change with JYP girl groups recently: after a few years of muddled artistic direction, Twice, Itzy, and NMIXX are all barreling ahead with some of their most assured releases ever. “One Spark” isn’t even close to the best track on Twice’s most recent EP, but for once, it fits right in and lifts the whole project up. [7]

Wayne Weizhen Zhang: The instrumental sounds like a yassified version of royalty-free music. Elsewhere the spark catches but develops into more of a clumsy ember than a roaring flame.  [5]

Alfred Soto: More like two sparks. This track never stops poppin'. [0]

Leah Isobel: Late-period Twice is so poised and professional, their songs gorgeous and modern; in their hands, the explosive breakbeats on this chorus come off like a tasteful accent pillow, the ascending synth counterpoint like a classy credenza. But what is that dry-ass Disney-ass guitar supposed to be? A cheap Ikea rug? [5]

Katherine St. Asaph: Boyfriend: Is this Pale Waves? Me: Is this ska? [5]

Jacob Sujin Kuppermann: Sadly not the ska revival track the opening guitar strums imply — but this is almost as good, a pop song like a perpetual motion machine. Every hook has another, slightly catchier hook it wears as a hat, every slowdown is accompanied by a speed-up, everything is calibrated just so.  [8]

Michael Hong: Maturing in the West often means shedding some of the things you grew up with, whereas the opposite rings true in K-pop, where codependency in a group is its own form of currency. Songwriters Sim Eunjee and Melanie Fontana do an admirable job of balancing these incongruities, but there are traces of awkwardness in the ambiguity with which an “endless flame” can be an object of passionate and a lifelong friend. Despite some of the more awkward shoe-horned line readings, Twice inflect a sense of rush into the drum 'n' bass. It’s a way of turning the trends set by their younger cohort into an act of maturity, of transforming “One Spark” into a passionate dance, even if their lyrics aren’t forthright about it. [6]

Nortey Dowuona: Pauline Cerrada, a songwriter on this absolute bop, has only one solo song, while Twice, assembled by the TV show Sixteen, have seven albums — three in Korean and four in Japanese, and this is a part of their thirteenth EP called With You-th. That’s the power of the K-pop industry: scooping up talent and cranking out fizzy pop bangers that the assembled musicians have to connect with, that the group members have to connect to. When it works, it produces this simpatico concept for each singer/rapper to link together, from intro verse to hook to trap breakdown to lily-white pre-chorus to nu-disco crank to drum 'n' bass and back again. It’s an electrifying mix. [10]

Ian Mathers: We have covered Twice over a dozen times, and I have either missed every single one of them, or I simply haven't retained a memory of any of those songs. Based on the perfectly fine "One Spark," it could easily be the latter. [5]

Joshua Minsoo Kim: An instructive K-pop single: the Atlanta bass and freestyle influence that informed Twice’s early work arrives alongside modish drum 'n' bass & stuttering club beats (their millionth trap breakdown is here too, but at least it’s subtle). The result is a song that’s effortlessly stylish to a fault, in constant search of a hook that can match the seamless genre blending. When they sing the chorus, it sounds like they’re losing their breath, chasing a high instead of delivering one. They finally get there when they bring in the handclaps. It’s only here that “my heart is burning” is delivered with the right balance of confidence and resignation. The production isn’t dizzying enough to conjure something epic, and so Twice are much more convincing when the passion is contained, like desire is swirling internally. [6]

My beloved one, ITZY.

Let me tell you something interesting about ITZY.

ITZY (있지) is a five-member girl group under JYP Entertainment. They debuted on February 12, 2019 with the digital single album “IT’z Different.” Prior to their debut, the members had previous experience in the industry. Chaeryeong was a contestant on the SBS competition show K-pop Star 3 in 2013. She then went to compete in JYP survival show SIXTEEN in 2015, however, she failed to become a member of the winning girl group, TWICE. Ryujin was a contestant on JTBC’s survival show MIXNINE from 2017 to 2018 and she placed first for girls but lost in the final competition to the boys team. Yeji was a contestant on SBS’ The Fan but was eliminated in episode 5. All of the members, with the exception of Lia, appeared in Mnet’s reality show Stray Kids as a project group against the boy group Stray Kids in 2017.

4/23/2023 - 4/29/2023: Cheshire by ITZY

After a year of hate for their releases, ITZY finally found relief from the backlash with "Cheshire". 2022 was a hard year for the girls of ITZY. Thankfully, this comeback gave them the adoration they deserved.

ITZY is a 5-member girl group under JYP Entertainment. They debuted February 11, 2019 with "Dalla Dalla", a song all about breaking the rules and being yourself. This became ITZY's signature: breaking the rules of what society wanted them to be. They immediately became one of the biggest groups of the 4 gen.

Music is subjective. People are always going to have something to say. But, when that number jumps to the vast majority, it is hard not to take it personally. In summer of 2022, ITZY's promotional team dropped hints at their next comeback, calling it "Checkmate". The visuals featured ITZY members dressed as dark royalty, decorated with chess pieces and jewelry. Fans were bursting to find out what was coming next. Then, very suddenly, the posts were flooded with neon colors and spray paint, followed by ITZY in brightly colored layers. The art read "Sneakers", and fans were confused. Teasers of the comeback came out and fans were immediately displeased. When the video for "Sneakers" finally dropped, the reviews were scathing. Some were happy with the brighter sound and fun nature, but many were still disappointed that they didn't get something to match with "Checkmate". The comeback was pronounced a failure, leaving ITZY and JYPE to work on the next comeback.

Not long after, ITZY dropped their English debut "Boys Like You" to a temperamental audience. Fans were extremely confused at this release, claiming it sounded like a song from Disney Channel or "an old Taylor Swift song", nothing like the ITZY they always knew. After all of the hate, several interviews came out with ITZY being noticeably unsure of themselves, scared for what would come next. Multiple members broke down crying in videos when the subject of hate or confidence was brought up. Things were not looking good.

"Cheshire" was released on November 30, 2022. The video features ITZY's iconic sharp vocals, strong dance details, and some of the cleanest transitions and editing in any music video ever made. On top of that, it serves as the pinpoint in which ITZY received mercy from the public bashing of their releases. It was everything the fans knew and loved about the girls! Hopefully, it is also the start of more good things to come from them.

In Kpop, it is very dangerous when a group is met by hate and a loss of sales. Depending on the artist, it can mean an instant disbandment or drop from the label, or it can mean harsher treatment behind the scenes. ITZY has not had a comeback since "Cheshire" and fans are anxious about when, or if, something is coming.

ITZY is also full of powerhouse members. Ryujin competed on MIXNINE, a competition show featuring trainees from various agencies, each competing to see who could make the strongest team. The show was also a battle of the sexes. Ryujin landed in 1st place for the girls and was offered a place at YG Entertainment. She stayed at JYP and was a very highly anticipated trainee. Chaeryoung competed on SIXTEEN, the show that formed iconic girl group TWICE, alongside her sister, Chaeyeon (IZ*ONE and soloist). Yeji was called JYP's "secret weapon" on the show that formed Stray Kids.

Nowadays, ITZY is known best for their strong dance skills, group unity, stage presence, and endurance. I hope to see more from them soon!

Twice's 10th member feels under the weather ft ITZY

A/N: Heyyy, I'm coming up with a lot of stuff for you guys lol! Sry for taking so long to post but the end of the semester is a whole event for me :D I hope that my friend Thira490 that gave me this idea on Wattpad likes it! :)

The request: Hi I was wondering if you could do where y/n is still like a child and a minor and sick so she's a little clingy the members have a schedule outside Seoul for a day and have to stay there so they ask itzy and they were happy to take care of y/n especially yeji who has a soft spot for her and always babying y/n while taking care of her. The soft morning light poured through the curtains, casting a gentle glow over the dormitory of TWICE. Among the laughter and chatter, a petite figure lay nestled beneath the sheets. Y/N, the 10th member of the group, was still fast asleep, her cheeks flushed with fever. At just sixteen years old, she was the maknae and most delicate member of TWICE, endearing herself to her older sisters with her sweet personality and bright smile. As the other girls prepared for their busy schedule outside Seoul, they couldn't help but feel worried about leaving their kid alone in her condition. She had been feeling under the weather for a couple of days, and her condition showed no signs of decreasing. Jeongyeon, as one of the moms, took on the responsibility of waking the young girl gently as she cooed, brushing a few strands of hair away from her forehead.

Jeongyeon - Y/N, dear, it's time to wake up.  

The girl stirred, her eyes fluttering open as she mumbled with her voice raspy from the lingering sickness.

Y/N - Unnie...

With her heart filled with concern, Jeongyeon tried to find a solution for the youngest.

Jeongyeon - We have to head out for our schedule, but we can't leave you alone. Do you want us to cancel everything?

Y/N - No, unnie. You all have worked so hard for this, and I don't want to be a burden. (Your "I don't wanna be a burden" issue is showing hon)

The unnies exchanged worried glances. They couldn't bear to see their dongsang suffering like this, and they also knew they couldn't cancel their commitments. That's when Chaeryeong from ITZY stepped forward, having come to check on her friends before they left. As she sensed the tension in the room, she attempted to discover the problem.

Chaeryeong - Hey, unnies. What's going on? 

Mina explained the situation, and without hesitation, Chaeryeong offered a solution. 

Chaeryeong - I have an idea! Why don't we take care of Y/N today? ITZY has no schedule, and we'd be more than happy to look after her.

The TWICE members were relieved, and grateful for Chaeryeong's kind gesture. They knew their sunshine would be in good hands with ITZY, especially considering Yeji's fondness for the youngest TWICE member. The sun was high in the sky when TWICE and ITZY arrived at the serene countryside location for their schedule. While the TWICE members put on their professional personas and prepared for their work, Yeji and the other ITZY members focused their attention on TWICE's angel. Yeji couldn't help but melt at the sight of Y/N, wrapped in a soft blanket, looking frail but still managing to flash a weak smile. She approached the young girl with gentle steps, her nurturing instincts kicking in as she crouched down beside her.

Yeji - Hey, baby. How are you feeling? 

Y/N - I'm okay, Yeji unnie. Thank you for taking care of me. *smiles*

Yeji brushed her fingers lightly through the maknae's hair as she talked.

Yeji - You don't have to thank me, silly. We're family, and family takes care of each other.

Throughout the day, Yeji was by Y/N's side, making sure she had everything she needed. She prepared a warm bowl of chicken soup for her, adjusted the blanket whenever the girl shivered, and even fetched her a glass of water when she was thirsty. The other ITZY members joined in, playing games and sharing stories to keep Y/N entertained. The day passed in a blur, and as evening approached, Y/N's condition seemed to improve slightly. Her fever had subsided, and though she was still weak, her spirits were higher thanks to the love and care she received from ITZY.

As the sun set, TWICE returned from their schedule, and they were greeted by a heartwarming scene. Their girl was sitting on the couch, surrounded by ITZY members, with Yeji holding her hand as they watched a lighthearted TV show together. Yeji was the first to notice them so she called out with a smile, gently helping Y/N to stand.

Yeji - Look who's back! 

The TWICE members rushed forward, concern etched on their faces. 

Jihyo - How are you feeling, sweetheart?

Y/N - I'm feeling much better, omma! ITZY unnies took such good care of me.

Nayeon - We're grateful to you all. Thank you for looking after our little Y/N.

Chaeryeong  - We were happy to do it. Y/N is adorable and easy to care for.

Y/N added, leaning into Yeji's side.

Y/N - And I had so much fun! Yeji unnie was the best! She's so kind and sweet.

Yeji blushed, feeling a mixture of pride and affection. 

Yeji - You're the sweetest, lovebug. I'm glad you had fun.

As the night continued, TWICE and ITZY spent quality time together, bonding over their shared love for music and laughter. TWICE's cutie remained close to Yeji, her newfound connection with the ITZY leader blossoming into a special friendship. In the weeks that followed, Y/N's health gradually improved, and the bond between TWICE and ITZY grew stronger. They supported each other through the ups and downs of their busy idol lives, leaning on one another like a big extended family.

From that day on, Y/N's affection for Yeji remained unwavering, and the feeling was mutual. Yeji couldn't resist being Y/N's older sister, her soft spot for the girl only growing with each passing day as she knew the girl was the little sister she never had. As this happened, Y/N could only have one thought:

I am proud of my chosen family.

I would not recommend this show to my friends, but will recommend to all my ONCE's. I would rewatch this show.

Dahyun and JIhyo being my top in Twice rn, I can see that it's still my feeling within this show. They're so themselves, so talented, so hardworking, and so amazing. They're also just younger versions of who they are now, so I like how the same they are. I love seeing different versions of Twice members that I don't really see now like Tzuyu's Sway, Sana's Heartburn, and all of Jeongyeon. I love that SanE felt Jihyo's leader energy. She really talks with more natural ease, and her humor shines as well. Love her. I love how Sana is forever articulate and deep.

I love the intro with Beyonce's 7/11 and all the ladies' intros. Wooyoung, Jun. K, and Fei's advice are helpful, so I like it. Getting any amount of product from Reebok, I want in even though I've never bought from there in my life. I thought all the group live performances were amazing and fun. I liked the variety show episode. I wish I could have a day like that. I love all the celeb guests, espeically Taecyeon. It's funny though because now I see my-aged people (the Sixteen members) standing next to Taecyeon and the age difference is v obvious lol. And I wanted to date him at that age. I loved during the guerilla concert PR, when they were able to speak in different languages to bring in foreign fans. I love that you can actually see progression and improvement over the episodes during their practices. It's nice to watch this now because you can see where everyone ended up years later. And I think it's like more fitting. e.g. Chaeryeong really fits ITZY more. But, it also makes me think how whatever you're going through right now, you really will end up where you need to be. Omg loved the last stage when they did I'm Gonna be a Star and the 7/11 dance because that was just relevant. And the eliminated returning!

God, I hate this take off the necklace thing and also having to announce who is eliminated or who you are switching with. The suspense and editing in this show are killing me. Too good. Keeps me on the edge.

Omg, I almost teared when after the first round, JY Park was like no one is eliminated. God, I'm feely teary at how much everyone supports each other and feels for each other. It's actually really heartbreaking for me to see them cry because it's like working so hard and putting your all out there only to be judged or to fail. I actually teared during Momo's elimination. Why was this so sad?

This is a hazing that I don't like because everyone really is so young, so you can really fuck them up. Especially, because it's hard to know how not serious life or failure is sometimes. And like the mentality of we are being harsh to you now because you'll experience worse later, I just don't vibe with, especially to young girls. But I also know that so many Korean adults have yelled at me thinking it's constructive.

The support that some of them get from their families or from each other, it's kinda amazing to me. To even have people to go to like that is beautiful.

The part where they have to vote for each other based on JYP's ideal characteristics made me think a lot about what are the characteristics that I think are worthy and what do I want to be.

It's kinda hard to see that one of the main criticisms for Jihyo is her weight. The Western view could bring up body positivity, but I feel like that neglects Korean culture. I do like JIhyo's mindset of how she just has to change something and she'll be gucci, but it is hard to see that it's something about appearance.

Ranking my favorite groups

Criteria is ranked thusly: 1) music, 2) members perceived groupness, 3) perceived company competency.

TWICE! With 30 songs and 1 cover appearing on all 4 of my kpop playlists they take the music category despite very few title tracks included in that list. Their b-sides never let me down. Between 1&2 is not only my favorite 2022 release but my favorite kpop release ever, with 6/7 songs on my playlist. Member groupness checks out. They aren't missing anything, yes including vocals. I have questions for their division, especially about Sixteen, but they rise to the top because of mental health breaks and all 9 members renewing.

(G)I-DLE. 10 songs in 3 playlists but they get so many bonus points for lyrical and production direction. Group is overall lacking in dancing, honestly even before they lost their best dancer, but very strong vocally, and impressed by the groupness considering everything. As for the company...listen Cube I just want to talk...

ITZY. 10 songs in one playlist and then you have Mafia heh. Not lacking in musical direction, but def missing marketing skills and not a single lyric credit. As for the group they're lacking in vocal skills (a perfectly good main vocal and look, you gave her anxiety!) but my favorite performance group.

EVERGLOW. 12 songs in all 4 playlists but lost a lot of points for the company. They also lose points for lack of perceived groupness, what with the company pushing Mia and Friends and sometimes Sihyeon, switching leaders, then sending the Chinese member off into the sunset and quietly giving her a solo while the others are performing until they literally drop. In terms of skills it feels as though they're simultaneously not lacking anything yet missing a little everywhere.

MAMAMOO. 9 songs in two playlists but 6 more in the same two playlists including solos. Music only they'd be higher, but group-wise they're all but disbanded now, with their saving grace being that I like quite a few of the solo releases and love the branching out of styles. An incredible vocal and performance group. Of the company I've heard mixed things.

BLACKPINK. 9 songs in two playlists plus a cover in another. With members they did not miss though they could've used another dance member to round out formations and lineups. Would love to see solo careers. Their company ranks quite possibly dead last.

Honorable Mentions: Ateez (not bad anywhere but strangely enough I've heard positive things about KQ), Weki Meki (has not missed with music), Stray Kids (members + production), Nmixx (have not ever been so impressed by members but also I liked O.O fuck you), IU (soloist but OMG), Tri.be (still rookies but no music misses), Sunmi (soloist but music is Good), and TXT (5 songs in 3 playlists).

Song Minyoung is back!

For those who don’t know, Song Minyoung or Charlene Song was a contestant in Sixteen, the survival show that created TWICE and before that she was supposed to debut in a group called 6mix with Jihyo, Jeongyeon, and Nayeon but their debut was cancelled. She was eliminated in the final round, and disappeared from the public eye afterwards. But, she’s just returned after six years and is going to do music again on her YouTube channel, so please give her some love and support!
