“ruby, i don't like him.”

you muttered under your breath almost immediately after stepping out of your carriage, greeted by your sister and her imposing husband.

it had not been a minute, but you were absolutely certain that you did not like duke iske van omerta.

ruby's eyes widened, a mix of embarrassment and amusement flashing across her face as she glanced at iske, who stood baffled by your blunt words, but his expression remained unreadable (much to your annoyance).

ruby let out a nervous laugh, pulling you to her to give a quick hug. “you little—! you just got here,” she whispered sharply, her wobbly, embarrassed smile betraying her amusement. “you haven't even talked to him, and you already decided that he's the bad guy.”

“he looks mean.” you glanced up at the towering man with an icy glare of your own as you furrowed your brows, “and kind of ugly.” you could hear the screech of disbelief from ruby when those words left your mouth.

you yelped as ruby pulled you to her, as she covered your mouth with her hand. ruby gave a nervous and apologetic grin to iske, “she doesn't mean it! she's just tired from the journey—”

you struggled, attempting to protest against ruby's words, “no i'm not he's— mmph!” ruby's grip on your mouth tightened, keeping her stilling grin.

“she doesn't mean it!”

iske's eyes narrowed slightly, his bewilderment shifting to something more unreadable. iske did not know whether to be offended or stunned by the audacity of ruby's sister. 

he could not exactly be angry since, well, you are ruby's sister.

iske was quite confident about himself as a duke and commander, who often instilled fear and rumors— however, being called mean and ugly by his wife's teenage sister was certainly a humbling experience.

though he did not show it, he was genuinely bothered by it.

iske raised a brow, folding his arms across his chest. “does she always introduce herself like this?” ruby let out another nervous laugh, still holding your mouth shut, “oh, she's usually much, much worse.”

“am not!” you managed to squeak out as you wriggled free from her grasps. as you stumbled on your steps, you quickly jabbed a finger to iske, “i'm being honest! you look scary! why does ruby always sing praises about yo— ow! ruby!”

despite iske's stoic demeanour while watching the exchange between ruby and her sister, something about your words seemed to pierce through iske's unshakeable confidence. his stature had stiffened since you called him ugly, and so did his sharp gaze.

when hearing that you were visiting ruby, iske actually put in a whole lot of effort to look neat, tidy, and sophisticated to have your approval after ruby said that you were a cranky teen that did not really like people.

ruby managed to calm you down from your crankiness of disliking iske, she turned her head back to iske—

only to find him leaning against a pillar of the manor, as if sulking. well, ruby assumed he was sulking, judging by his faltered shoulders and contemplating expression. 

if anything, he looked troubled. 

ruby could barely hear the mumbles coming from him

ruby paled to see iske having an existential crisis. she shot you a warning glare before walking to iske, trying to comfort him, “iske, don't let my sister's words get into your head! you're fine the way you are!”  

iske is a duke, a commander, a man accustomed to respect and feared by many.

yet here he was, troubled by the blunt opinion of a teenager.

his wife's little sister.

it made him extra bothered when you really liked iske's sister, but not him.

during the duration of your stay, iske tried to appeal to you. somehow, that was. he always struck up conversations with you whenever you were around, which you found completely awkward and weird of him, unfortunately.

then he tried to appeal to your taste palette. he made sure that every meal from breakfast to dinner had meals that you were fond of, which ruby thankfully told him what you did like. that still did not make you like him at all.

iske had also attempted to give you tiny gifts. this was a strategy that ruby herself had told iske to try since you were quite fond of gifts. 

he had started to look like a kicked puppy due to not having ruby's little sister's approval.

“this isn't actually bad.” you admitted to ruby as you raised the toy plush of an animal you were fond of, gazing at it with satisfaction. “see, he's not that bad, right?” ruby mused with a strange sympathy for her husband, who's been in turmoil for two days due to you.

you gave her a look before sighing, “i'm surprised he's doing all of this. the attempts to talk to me, the food, and now the gifts. he's a real weirdo.” you huffed out.

you returned your eyes back to the plush. after a long while of thinking, you pouted, “ugh, fine... he's not that bad. i guess he's better than the rest of the other choices father had for you.” you grumbled out, embarrassed to admit that iske is actually a good man for your sister.

as you prepared to leave, you decided to apologise to iske about your behaviour. despite your irritation and resistance (and probably protectiveness over your sister), you could not ignore that iske had genuinely tried. 

you also had seen the way he looked at ruby. genuine love and care.

he was unlike those disgusting men.

you only gave a curt apology to iske. there was no need for grand gestures or for it to be lengthy before hopping into your carriage.

when you glanced out at the window, you noticed that iske's eyes brightened, like a dog. he looked at ruby with disbelief and pride. iske finally got your approval after three days of trying.

you could not help but feel a quiet sense of happiness, knowing that your sister will be fine with that weirdo.

You had encountered the husband and wife during a ball and you have to say, you fell in love at the first glance. Though the fantasy of being a close friend or more with them seemed impossible you couldn't help but dream and hope.

Little did you know what the future holds for you was unlike anything you could've possibly imagined.

The duchess, whom you found out to be called Ruby, had come to you one day with the intention of befriending you. The talk between you two was something you cherished because well... You do like her.

The frequency of your talks started getting more and more when Ruby started inviting you to join her in the many events her friends hold for her. Though you soon realize that these so-called friends were a bunch of fake, toxic men and women that just wanted to humiliate the duchess. Specifically, Lady Freya who you learned to despise.

But what you didn't expect was Rudbeckia begging Izek to let you in to their relationship as well.

Izek wasn't so happy at that. Because Ruby's was his. But he could not say no to his wife.

At first you and Izek could not get along like how you and Ruby do. But before long he starts getting attached to you like how Ruby does.

Now came to the point that they refused to let you go anywhere or do anything without them with you like supervisors so to speak.

Tired of their nonsense, you run away in the middle of the night. Trying to ignore the frantic beating of your heart that beats so loudly in your ears as you prop yourself to slide from the window.

There's an overhang but you bounce smoothly onto the soft patch of grass. You rush along through the trees, listening closely for the many guards that roamed these gardens.

You just about made it to the gates when a shout is heard behind you. The sound of Ruby's voice calling for Izek and his men.

It doesn't take long before running feet and rustling of leaves take to the night air.

You rush out, running as fast as you possibly could. But you knew it was a risky choice.

A hand grabbed your wrist firmly as the person pulled you to him. Your heart is pounding in your ears as you see the crimson gaze of the duke.

He takes you onto the horse with him, turning the animal around as you two head back to the castle where Ruby stands, worried for you. As soon as she sees you, a certain beam of light comes on her face as she tugs you off the horse.

Izek gets off too and you three head for the bedroom. You knew what would happen next.

"My darling, why did you try and run away from us?" Ruby hugs you, her cheek against your own as she pulls you close.

"It is for your own good, Name." Izek speaks suddenly as he steps closer. His hand moving to unbutton his shirt.

"Perhaps we can give you a reason to stay, don't we Ruby?" "Yes, of course!" A happy banter between the two is displayed and you could feel your stomach churning with nervousness of what they could possibly have planned.

"Prepare yourself, beloved." Izek whispers as he moves behind you, causing you to shudder at the feeling of his hot breath. "Because by the time we are done with you, you won't be able to walk for weeks on end."

Ruby's only solace, a person whose soul possessed the body of Freya Van Furiana, the novel female lead, just as she possessed the body of Rudbeckia De Borgia, the novel villainess.

You both found out about it rather accidentally. By accident I mean you heard Ruby singing a Taylor Swift song 'Wildest Dreams'. After that, you had to take your shot and risk it all, but in the end it was all worth it, as you made your gorgeous bestest friend.

From that day forth one could wonder, how did you both got so close? After all, to those who didn't know the whole story, it all seemed as if you two just magically decided to be the closest of the close, like you know each other all your life, which kinda displeased Ellen. Which was partially true, after all you won't find a better person to talk to than the one who's in the same situation as you.

Ruby had a really hard time adapting to the ways of the north, so different from her 'home' ways. Yet there you were, guiding her through every step of the way.

Also don't forget making seducing Izek easier, by setting them the right scenery and without the original Freyas stunts.

Yet even when this feared Duke of the North, Izek Van Omerta finally fell in love with Ruby, which brought you both a peace of mind, the Duchess always felt bad when he showed her love and affection, as she had fallen for you.

When she found out, that your new family was abusive, she boiled with anger- No, shefumed with fury. That was the first time, when you felt completely terrified by your innocent friend.

Not to mention that the first words she said after your revelation was an order to get rid of your family's heads, with the exception of your dear brother Lorenzo.

After a few heads rolling and your distance to her, she tried to guilt trip you. She did so much for you, why are you so.. ungreateful! She murdered people for you, the ones who wronged you, and yet you're still avoiding her!

All she ever did was to make your life easier, like you did to hers! She just returned the favor and yet you're making it seem like she did something bad.

Ruby's lovesick lover instantly saw that change in his wife, her desperation. He waited, waited for her to open up to him, yet when she never did he decided to finally confront her in their shared bedroom, much to her's dissatisfaction, as she'd rather share a bed with you.

And that's when she bursts out in tears, screaming her frustrations out into Izek's arm, crying about how you're avoiding her, giving her cold stares, which you don't, and keeping a huge distance, while pretending you don't know her.

Next thing you know, you're forbidden from leaving your room and contacting anyone other than Ruby. She was the only one to communicate with, eat your meal with and the one to spend time with.

And you couldn't do anything about it, after all you lived in the Van Omerta's Household, where Ruby was the Duchess, and her husband, Izek Van Omerta the Duke.

You really should've expected that, after all there is not a single thing this man won't do for his wife. The consequences of your actions are gonna follow you for a long time, in your room with the reason for your 'arrest' always smiling happily by your side.

How To Get My Husband On My Side

I usually love strong female characters and I love reading them. Not a big fan of weak or damsel in distress characters. But RUBY. Idk how to explain my thoughts and feelings about her. Ik it doesn't make any sense but I feel like this is what I'd feel about my own daughter if I had one (I just turned 20 last month lolol). Ruby is by far my most favourite manhwa fmc and the most beautiful girl in my eyes I'm not even exaggerating. Yall won't believe how many times I scroll back to see the panels Ruby is in. I don't think I've even replayed shirtless Izek that many times lmao. I just stare at her in awe. I can't help but smile. I just re read this manhwa for the 4th time today, I just keep coming back here. This manhwa is so beautiful, cute, sad, painful and heartbreaking all at the same time. I cry, smile, laugh, giggle, get angry, so many emotions all at once.

I feel so sad whenever I look at Ruby's eyes. I just wanna give her a hug. Ruby is by far one of the strongest characters I've ever read. Being strong doesn't necessarily mean being physically strong yk. Everything she's gone through, those are unimaginable. The fact that she's still sane is probably the biggest proof of how strong she is. Cause imagine being abused like she was for that many years (even in her previous life, or should I say lives), she's only suffering. I can't imagine how deep the trauma runs.

Every kind of Abuse destroy people. She has gone thorough so many kind of abuses. But man SA has got to be the most horrendous things to ever happen to someone, that too by her own brother, at her own house, for so many years, where the so called brother even spread rumour about their questionable relationship outside just so her marriages could be broken off. I can't imagine going through all of that everyday and still having to smile sweetly 24/7, not having anyone to share these with, no one to rely on and pretending to be completely fine. I'd never be able to last so long, I'd be long gone.

As much as I love Izek now, it's an undeniable fact that he was a jerk to her when she first came here. Okay he had his reasons cause her family couldn't be trusted yada yada but RUBY didn't deserve any of it. Good thing she escaped from the hell, her own house but then came here to be treated like a nuisance by her own husband. Okay he's changed now and he loves her and everything is good so I'll kinda forgive him too cause at least he's giving Ruby the love, warmth, support, reassurance, comfort now. She needed them so bad. She really needed someone to confide in.

Whenever I see her holding things in and not being able to talk about her past traumas and abuse with anyone and silently putting up everything that fu*king Cesare bitch a**hole ugly looking piece of sh*t son of a wh*re does in fear that things will get worse, I just want to go get myself off by a truck and isekai into the story and stab that filthy guy until my hands fall of. I don't think I ever hated or will hate anything as much as I hate Cesare. This manhwa keeps breaking me but I still keep coming back for Ruby and maybe a little bit for Izek too, love to see them together.

I'm so mad she had to endure all of that. Idc what Ruby does or ever did. I'd support her even if she were to take initiative to end the world. I'd gladly let her destroy everything, kill everyone including me if that's what she wanted, I'd give her everything she could've ever asked for and even more cause RUBY my love deserves everything. Okay but why do I sound like a mom tho lolol. I guess Izek has a stronger competition now cause at least I'd never treat that angel like precious munchkin the way he did in the past hmph.

So in conclusion what I wanted to say is, I LOVE RUBY. My loveliest most adorable bestest sweetheart. My heart swells with love everytime she smiles. She shines so bright I fear. Ruby is the most amazing, Ruby is the most beautiful, Ruby is the strongest, i wanna bawl my eyes out everytime I look at her eyes. And if anyone tries to hurt my Ruby and talk shit about her, I'm personally coming for you, you better sleep at night with an eye open. Cause Ruby might be the sweetest but I'm certainly NOT.

I really need to stop rereading How to Get my Husband on my Side because I inevitably become so frustrated but I can’t help going back to it because the initial premise and beginning are so fucking compelling. The kicker? The romance is done in the worst way possible in my opinion which is not helped by the fact that it’s primarily a romance novel. Izek falls way too fucking fast and is willing to do way too much for Ruby far too soon. The moment after the poisoning incident? Where Izek all but says he’s willing to bury the truth if it turns out it’s true that Ruby poisoned Freya *makes no fucking sense.* He has barely known this woman for *maybe* a month, he is only just beginning to discern what is a lie and what is a truth when it comes to how Ruby presents herself to him. At this point he knows that she was certainly not well loved like the rumors say, and there is definitely something abusive going on but he hardly has a judge of her character well enough to be making that sort of devoted judgement call. It doesn’t make any sense considering how he has only just now started coming around to Ruby.

The thing that kills me is that the author didn’t even have to change the plot to make Izek’s arc make more sense? Literally they just needed to draw out the falling in love portion more. You can still have Izek run himself ragged trying to find the truth because he is convinced that Ruby didn’t do it without seemingly planning to cover up for her should she be guilty- that much would make sense. Also why does he become so devoted to her so quickly after she runs away?? Like listen I would understand him finally starting to trust her and make an active effort to be more open with her, and maybe this is my aroace ass talking because I find fast romances difficult to believe under any circumstances, but it’s so offputting how his personality does a complete 180. At least gently work your way into these things??? 

Also what’s so baffling about how badly paced Izek’s arc is the fact that Ruby’s arc is perfectly paced??? Her character is so expertly well done not only in terms of her trauma and how that trauma colors her perspective but in how she feels about Izek in particular that it’s hard to believe both storylines come from the same author. 

I really just wish Izek was done better because then this manhwa/novel would easily be one of my favorites but alas i shall stick to rereading and then being sad :/
